Alexander, president of Pearl River Junior College, was born on April 25, 1936, on a small dairy farm in the small community of Clarksburg, between Morton and Pelahatchie, to James and Lessye Alex- ander His father worked as a mechanic on his grandfather ' s dairy farm following the Great Depression. His fa- ther landed a job with Missouri Pacific Trailways and the family moved to Algiers, LA. However, in time they re- turned to Morton and then to Jackson where Alexander finished high school. He entered Millsaps College, majoring in English with emphasis in American Literature In 1 958, he received his B.A. degree in this field In 1959, he recieved a second certification in the Biological Sciences, then went on to attend Mississippi College where he pursued a dual Master ' s program in School Administration and Guidance During this time he received a National Science Foundation Fellowship and did advanced graduate work in the Biological Sciences at Louisiana Polytechnic Institute in Ruston, LA. In 1973, he completed his studies at the University of Southern Mississipi with a Doctorate in Educational Administration Alexander, past Superintendent of Schools of McComb Municipal Separate School District of McComb, considered becoming the president of PRC a high point in his career. The Alexanders have become a part of the Poplarville community as well as the college scene. Mrs. Alexander teaches business administration at Poplarville High School where son, Bryan, is a junior. Brent, the older son, is a senior at his father ' s alma mater, Millsaps. We welcome the Alexanders to PRC! 50 oliseum Coliseum Named For Dr. M. R. Each of the 100 clearly has achieve- ments worthy of the attention of fellow administrators and school board mem- bers throughout North America, said Gregg Downey, editor and assistant pub- lisher of the American School Board Journal and The Executive Educator Alexander was chosen for the honor by an independent panel of nationally rec- ognized experts on school administra- tion During three days of screening, the panel of preeminent educators, as- sessed nominations according to the 1 1 criteria of excellence established for Ex- ecutive Educator. Carroll F Johnson, pro- fessor emeritus of education, Columbia University, New York City, served as chairman of the panel In a field of 300,000 school exe cu- tives these are 100 of the best, said Downey. Their accomplishments both reflect and represent all outstanding school executives. Alexander, former McComb School Su- perintendent, became president of Pearl River Junior College on July 1, 1986 During his tenure at McComb, Alex- ander invited consultants and Mississip- pi colleagues to help him establish a staff development program that later served as a model for other school systems The program required Alexander to lengthen the school day and school year so in- structional time wouldn ' t be lost when classes were dismissed early on Wednesday afternoons for staff develop- ment sessions. It was a pretty radical departure for staff development programs in Mississip- pi, he says. Alexander also led the McComb schools in becoming a found- ing member of the Program for Research and Evaluation in Public Schools, a school consortium established by Missis- sippi superintendents to evaluate and im- prove instructional programs. The female dorms were filled to 77% with 170 students being housed. REGISTRATION This high enrollment was evident at registration when lines extended from the library to the end of the academic building. It was also evident when a majority of the classes filled up causing students to choose other less desir- able times for classes. The high enrollment was compensated for when five new classes were offered. They include New Testament Survey, First Aid, Social Problems, Traditional Grammar, and Occupational Writing. 1987 PRC ' S The blood drive held in Marion Hall on January 28 by the MS Blood Services drew 138 interested donors Because of medical reasons. 11 of these were turned away There were 127 pints of blood given, resulting in an over 100% success rate The goal was to get 100 pints of blood This blood drive was even more of a success than last year ' s blood drive Then, PRC students gave 95 pints of blood It was a 100 pint goal with 95% success rate Despite one person fainting and some blood splattering, donors, with determination, went toward their noble goal They gave blood and later received complimentary refreshments and a T-shirt from MBS For five hours, interested donors arrived at the rate of about 26 an hour Nursing students from the co-sponsor of the blood drive, MASN. helped register students and gave out refreshments provided by Morrison ' s. Each person went through a registration process to make sure he or she had no medical condition that prevented the right to give blood They were turned away if they had conditions such as being under- weight, hepatitis, allergies, blood diseases, drugs in system, heart diseases, asthma, diabetes, Mono, ulcers, pregnancy, or AIDS The conditions aren ' t allowable if occurring within the last six months Then, the person had to have his or her temperature taken, a:; BLOOD DRIVE well as have his or her blood typed and checked for an iron deficiency. If the person had lacked sufficient iron then, he or she was asked to take vitamins or eat more foods with iron and donate another time. After the student was declared eligible to donate, he or she was sent to get a blood donor bag and told to stand in line. Then the donor was laid out on a flat hospital bed to finally give blood — the whole purpose. The process of giving blood usually takes 10 to 20 minutes, from the time of needle insertion and drawing of blood, to the final needle withdrawal. After giving their blood for the purpose of saving lives, donors were given cookies and punch to restore some energy sapped from losing a pint of blood. In a few weeks, the donor ' s lost blood will be completely reproduced with no ill effects to the person The donors were also given free T-shirts which said, Blood is like a parachute, if it ' s not there when you need it, you ' ll probably never need it again There are several benefits of giving blood. Besides getting a blood donor card, the donor gets his or her blood typed and checked for medical records. He or she also gets a free credit for the amount of blood given. If the donor needs blood in the future, then he or she won ' t have to pay for the amount credited. Blood helps keep everyone healthy and living. If a person donates, he or she gets the opportunity to help someone else stay that way. 114 115 At Pearl River College, you ' re not just another number on a computer read out sheet You are an individual. Roche Mr. Rawls, Director 177 The Pearl River College Marching Band. The Spirit of the River, completed a very successful marching season m the fall 1986. According to Archie Rawls, PRC band director, this year ' s edition of the Spirit was the best in the school ' s history. With new uniforms, a larger color guard, and the incorpo- ration of the String of Pearls into the entire show, the band electrified the audiences at Pearl River half-time perfor- mances. The marching show in- cluded Durango, a fiery Spanish opener, All Night Long, Lionel Richie ' s most popular song; Paradox, fea- turing the percussion section, Boogie Down, a hip version of Al Jarreau ' s hit that featured the String of Pearls and the barefoot trombone section; and a powerful arrangement of the beautiful Greatest Love of All. Rawls attributes the awe- some sound of the band to the depth of excellent talent in the brass section. I don ' t think there is another junior college band in the state with as many outstanding players as we have this year ' ' The success of the band was rewarded by invitations to appear in exhibition at both the Picayune and Tylertown marching festivals. Com- bined, these two appear- ances allowed the band the opportunity to perform for nearly 5000 high school band students from Mississippi and Louisiana. The band was led on the field this year by Stephanie Cummmgs, a freshman from Oak Grove. The color guard was taught by Rudy Rowell, a PRC graduate who is now band director at Hancock North Central. Rawls said he was already looking forward to 1987 to continue the tradition of ex- cellence that has been estab- lished in the band program at the River 178 THE SPIRIT OF THE RIVER PRC STUDENT COUNCIL The members of the Student Council are, seated from left: Kim Bolton, Ron Holmes, Sustm Anderson, Julie Knip- pers Standing from left are: Wendy Willoughby, Becky Nail, Anna Purvis, Keith Dale, Tracey Carver, Joey Tatum, Joy White, Kim Miller and Heather Gordon.
