Wheat, a 1961 graduate of Pearl River College, was named Alumnus of the Year at the annual banquet of the Pearl River College Alumni Association. Elwyn exemplifies the person that should receive this award, said Dr. James Sones, dean of vocational-technical education, as he introduced Wheat to the packed audience at the PRC Alumni Banquet. His contributions as a professional and a friend to Pearl River Jr. College and to the state of Mississippi are in-numberable. Elwyn has said on many occasions that many of his accomplishments can directly be attributed to the opportunity and start received at PRC. Wheat, a native of Pearl River county, graduated from Poplarville High School before entering PRC before graduating from Mississippi State University. Wheat later recieved a master ' s of science degree and a specialist ' s degree in vocational education and school administration from the University of Southern Mississippi. He began his teaching career in the Biloxi public school system as a trade instructor. After three years he began teaching as a voca- tional instructor at Jones Junior College in Ellisville. Wheat later moved to the Mississippi Department of Education, Vocational Division, and served in the following capacities. ' Assistant state supervisor of trade and industrial programs at the secondary level. State supervisor of trade and industrial programs at the post secondary level. Assistant director of all post secondary programs. Assistant director of program operations. And from 1978 to the present time, he has served as associate state superintendent of education, in charge of vo tech education. His present job includes the supervision of 1 22 persons and the managing of a $60 million dollar budget. He is also responsible for an inventory state equipment valued at another $60 million dollars. Wheat began his military career as a Pvt. E l and has held all the enlisted ranks. He is still active in the Army National Guard and to- day serves as a Chief Warrant Officer. Wheat is a member of many professional and honorary organizations on the local, state, and national levels. He is also a member of the Mississippi State Fair Commission, State Job Training Coordinating Council, Board member of the National Association State Director Vocational Education and STEP Coordinating. Wheat is married to the former Anita Roe and they have two children, Phillip age 16 and Pamela age 13. J. Larry Ladner president of the Pearl River Alumni Association, presided over the banquet. Also on the program were Dr. Marvin R. White, president of Pearl River College and Stanley Purvis, president of the PRC Student Council. Former state senator Wade Smith received the autographed PRC football for being the earliest PRC graduate in attendance and Toxie Hall Smith of Las Vegas Nevada was recognized for traveling the farthest to be at the banquet. Dr. James Sones served as homecoming parade chairman and Dean Enoch Seal served as overal l homecoming chairman. Elwyn Wheat 48 HANCOCK. We would like to show you what made Pearl River Jr. College the way it is today. The buildings, teachers, students, and all the other people help make Pearl River College the best. It is the Spirit that bring people here to find their future. We hope this section, Reflections , shows you that the River Spirit has been here since the beginning of Pearl River College and we are all part of that living tradition, THE RIVER MAGIC. 52 THE RIVER S HISTORY Pearl River College is boasting its 75th anniversary, but many people do not know how the school first began. It was discussed on July 6, 1 908 that an agricultural high school be built for Pearl River County. It was here that the first two members of the Board of Trustees, Theodore Bilbo, who later became governor of Mississippi, and E.B Ferris, were elected Later a committee on behalf of the people of Poplarville was formed to per suade the School Board to locate the school in Po plarville. They offered to contribute $2,245 and 90 acres of land. On July 30, 1908 the Poplarville location was approved but M.G Blackwell and M.D. Tate tried to have the decision rescinded so that the people of McNeill would have a chance at bidding. This failed and the previous action was upheld Pearl River Agricultural High School would be erected in Poplarville. On July 7, 1909, almost 3000 people were reported to have witnessed the cornerstone laying for the new AHS building That hot day, numerous ceremonies and speeches were made on the AHS campus and on the Poplarville High School campus where a barbecue was held and a baseball game was played. On August 17, 1909, T.M. Kelly, principal, set forth that the school would be a three-year course, and the school would not be a college although many people called it the college. The chief function of the AHS was to cover the grades between sev en and freshman class in college. At this early beginning only one building was erected to serve all purposes so arrangements for classrooms, dining rooms, and other facilities were only temporary. On September 1, 1909, the school session began. Opening exercises were attended by about 800 persons That day the school enrolled 42 people and by Christmas there were 83 students enrolled. The school grew and by 1921 five buildings had been erected and the principalship had changed hands three times On September 28, 1920, the Board of Trustees authorized that the school would start professing freshman college work, beginning with the 1921-22 session. The school then became the first in the state to offer junior college credit On May 6, 1926, the school joined the Junior College Athletic Association and on May 13, the AHS was recognized by the state as a junior college whose academic credit was to be accepted by all senior colleges in the state On September 7, 1926, Pearl River Junior College had its formal opening ceremony The combined school took the unofficial name of Pearl River Agricultural High School and Junior College. The 1930 s saw the great depression and when things started to get better, WW II started. In 1933 the major buildings were named as follows: Moody Hall, Batson Hall (stood where Marion is now). Huff Hall. White Hall. Jacobs Hall, and Crosby Hall In the years that followed, three new buildings would be erected, including the first air conditioned office buildings on campus. Finally, in the spring of 1960, the college severed all direct relationship with the high school and was known, as it is today. Pearl River Junior College. 53 High School Aca- demic Building That ' s it folks, the old high school aca demic building. One of the first on the PRC campus built for high school academic courses. Now look at the student center — see the change from a few years ago. That ' s part of the River Magic changes . The River is changing to keep up with new technical advances to bring better opportunities to you. The rules and the courses change to challenge you to do your best. As you look at these pictures, think of the challenges these people faced. Yet, they met these challenges with the same spirit that has become the tradition today. That is the purpose of PRC, to provide challenges for you to conquer. 54 Girls, the word Lady ought to suggest at once, ideally, a pure girl (or a pure woman), who keeps herself physically and morally fit, her thinking on a very high plane, and her manner gentle, kind, and winsome. Boys, the word Gentlemen, ought to mean to you, ideal- ly a fine stalwart, athletic, manly fellow, who is an all- round good sport in the best sense, and who has manners that cannot prevent others from seeing the fine qualities that he has. 58 REGULATIONS FOR BOARDING PUPILS 1. Carnival participation was at the start slow, according to Harvey Seligman, PRC ' s student activities director and SPARC advisor, but by the time Halloween II was shown at 9 p.m., the activities center was full. It was a good turnout, Seligman said. We didn ' t have as many booths as last year but the movie made up for that. Eight booths including a BSCI-sponsored Horror Fun House and nursing department- sponsored cake walk highlighted the carnival. The PRC Afro-American Club sponsored apple dunking, penny pitching, grab-bag, and also sold drinks. VICA painted faces and sponsored a sponge throw. An electric bull and mechanical calf-roping booth was set up but taken down before the carnival began when the equipment failed to operate. Many students participated in the annual costume contest. Prizes were awarded for first, second and third places. Christmas Celebration - 1984 Huff and Marion take first Huff Hall was the winner in the dormitory Christmas caroling held in Moody Hall Auditorium and Marion Hall took the top spot in decoration competition, which was also judged earlier in the evening. According to one of the contest judges, about 300 students showed up to compete or watch their respec- tive dorm mates sing some of those favorite Christmas tunes. Huff Hall took first place in the singing competition, while Marion Hall won the decoration contest and cap- tured second place in caroling. White Hall came in second behind Marion in decorations and Crosby took third place position. White also came in third in the singing event. Harvey Seligman, activities director here at Pearl River, said he was very pleased with the overall pro- gram and is already anticipating next year ' s caroling contest because of this year ' s success. This is the second consecutive year that Huff has won first in the singing competition. White Hall was the winner in decorations last year. Bryan Cooper of Chalmette, LA was the night ' s Em- cee. Tony Poole of Poplarville and Jeneanne Styphens of Sumrall provided special music. The Christmas caroling and decoration competition is sponsored by SPARC, Harvey Se ligman, advisor. Huff Hall f Pearl River Hall 98 Marion Hall f If your classes are smaller and it ' s easier to find a parking place this semester, the reason is simple. Pearl River College ' s spring enrollment is down. According to figures released this week by Dr. Willis Lott, director of admis sions, there are 1 15 less students on the PRC campus than at this time last year and nearly 300 less than last fall. Dr. Lott placed much of the blame on tougher academic and financial aid standards. There is also a statewide trend in declin- ing college enrollments. Last spring semester 1473 students were enrolled here at the main campus. By the time late registration was completed then, the ' 85 total was 1358. Students that scored below a 15 on ACT must have college algebra before transferring to a senior college or univeristy, said Enoch Seal, dean of academic affairs. These new standards were set by the Institutions of Higher Learning and are taking its toll. There are 299 students enrolled in developmental classes this semester, more in introductory algebra than any of the other developmental courses. This especially affects the older stu- dents who may not have had algebra when they last attended school, said Dean Seal. Persons receiving financial aid must maintain a 1 .5 or above grade average to continue their benefits, said Dr. Lott. Fall semester 1984 there were 136 official withdrawals: 41 that enrolled and cut out of developmental courses, and 44 cut out all together in the first six weeks, said Dr. Lott f I Blood Drive Declared a Success Pearl River College students and faculty member rolled up their sleeves and donated more than 100 pints of blood here January 30, 1985. In fact, by the time the Mississippi Blood Services bloodmobile left Marion Hall, 1 19 pints had been donated and another 16 had been turned away. The goal was 100 + pints and MBS representative Jim Landum and Charlotte Odom, director of PRC ' s nursing department, who sponsored the event on campus, were all smiles. The generosity shown here on the PRC campus is really impressive, ' ' Odom said. The donations will mean so much to the sick and injured. 108 Mr. Miss Pearl River Junior College Miss Pearl River Jr. College N e c a • 1 s e G i d g e t V Sophomore Stephanie Stephanie ■• II. 7 IK r Cindy Keith Sam Greg Freshmen Ranae Christy Sherrie Todd Scott Mike President R.
