Smith Named PRC Alumnus of the Year 30 Martin T. Smith, a Poplarville lawyer and Mississippi state senator, was named Pearl River Junior College ' s 1983 Alumnus of the Year here Saturday during PRC ' s Homecoming activities. Smith, a native of Poplarville and a 1954 honor ' s graduate and student council president of Pearl River College, has served as state senator representing District 47 since 1968. He was recently reelected for his fifth term. He has always supported legislation for Mississippi Junior Colleges, said Dr. Marvin R. White, president of PRC. He has worked long and hard with me in getting documents approved by the State Building Commission, and other state agencies, so we could secure funds to construct buildings on this campus and at our other centers. Smith, who is also the attorney for the PRC Board, has visited with President White and the county board of supervisors of the six counties supporting PRC, seeking their additional support of the college. Martin has always made time for Pearl River College, said Dr. White. He has been a valuable asset to this college for many years as an attorney, as a legislator and as a friend of the college. Smith, who has served as president of the PRC Alumni Asso- ciation, is very active in the Poplarville Methodist Church, in civic organizations of the community and the public affairs of the town. He graduated from the University of Mississippi, where he earned his bachelor ' s degree and juris doctorate. In 1958 he opened his law practice in Poplarville and is now a partner in the law firm of Smith, Smith, Tate, Stuart, and Cruthird with offices in Poplarville and Picayune. He is presently serving as chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee and has served on numerous legislative committees such as finance, appropriations, and PEER. He has had member- ship in Pi Kapp Alpha, Phi Alpha Delta, and has served as a State Bar Commissioner of the Mississippi State Bar Associ- ation, and as a member of State Building Commission. He is presently a member of the Pearl River County and American Bar Associations, the Mississippi State Bar, the Mis- sissippi Trial Lawyers Association and the Association of Trial Lawyers of America. As a member of the business community. Smith has been a member of the Jaycees and is a past member of the Board of Directors of the Poplarville Chamber of Commerce. He was a member and president of the PoplarvillePearl River County Airport Board and was instrumental in securing the local air- port. Smith served as chairman of the Board of Directors of First State Savings and Loan Assocation of Poplarville and is present- ly serving as chairman of the Board of Directors of Gnifirst — Poplarville and Picayune branches. He is also serving as chair- man of the state-wide (Jnifirst Advisory Council. Smith is married to the former Delores Thomas of Poplarville and they are the parents of a son, Martin Barney. Senator Smith is the son of the late Martin L. Smith and Mrs. Louise Smith of Poplarville.
