Pearl River College found itself in a minority as registration figures set new attendance re cords. The enrollment at the Poplarville campus peaked at 1651. 1983 marked the 5th year that an enrollment increase has taken place at Mississippi ' s pioneer junior college. There are 650 academic. 714 vocational and techni cal. 138 nursing, and 149 pre nursing students on the main campus in Poplarville. These figures do not include the Forrest County campus, the Hancock County campus, the Lamar County campus, and the Columbia and Picayune centers. Mrs. Kathryn Bass Moody of Poplarville, a 1936 special honors graduate, became the first Pearl River Col- lege Alumna of the Year here Saturday night at the annual Alumni Banquet. Mrs. Moody, the first woman to serve on the Board of Trustees of Pearl River College, has been a supporter of PRC since she became a student. Her willingness to accept worthy new ideas has sparked a continued interest in the progress of the church, school, young people and the community, said Enoch Seal Jr., PRC ' s academic dean and secretary of the Alumni Association. Mrs. Moody gives scholarships to PRC students studying in the fields of both nursing and business. As a direct effect of her financial aid to nursing students, we have registered nurses in this geographical area that we would not have had otherwise, Seal said. She has recently served on the PRC Building Committee and has donated her time and talents in selecting furniture and choosing the decor of the recently completed million dollar building project on campus. The Columbia, Mississippi native graduated from Meridian High School and moved to Poplarville to attend PRC. She mar- ried the late J.S. Moody in 1937 and since that time she has had a variety of activities in the community. Not only has her interest been in the community as a whole, but in reaching out and helping individuals in times of need, said Seal. She is to be congratulated on her interest and sup- port of her church, community and school, and in making her home available to young people of all faiths. Mrs. Moody has two children who attended Pearl River Col- lege. Her son, Buddy Moody, is married to the former Robin Smith of Picayune and they live in Poplarville. Her daughter, Miriam, is married to Ted Perry and they live in Middlebury, Vermont. Mrs. Moody has six grandchildren. This association is most proud of Mrs. Moody ' s dedication, loyalty and support of Pearl River College, Seal said. Mrs. Moody said, after receiving a plaque from Shelton Ball, the PRC alumni president, I believe in the River Magic. I always will. Shelton recognized five members of the 1930 graduating class as the earliest graduates in attendance at the annual ban- quet. Each will receive an autographed football. Mr. and Mrs. Bill Chisolm of Buffalo, New York were recog- nized as the graduates who traveled the fartherest to come to the banquet. An award was also presented to Miss Anne Dan- dridge for her efforts as president of the Alumni Association from 1979-81. Rene Jeanfreau, PRC ' s student council president, welcomed the Alumni members and recognized Homecoming Queen Tina Davis of Columbia and her seven-member court. Dr. Marvin R. White, president of Pearl River College, recog- nized many state and local dignitaries. He encouraged the alum- ni ' s continued support of the River. Shelton Ball will serve as president for one more year and Larry Ladner is the president elect. Seal will be serving his 28th year as secretary of the organization. Special music was provided by the Pearl River College Choir, which is directed by Dr. Larry Newell. Contributors to the 1982 Alumni Scholarship Fund are: Fox- worth Bank, Columbia; Columbia Bank, Columbia; Citizens Bank, Columbia; First Mississippi National Bank, Hattiesburg; Hancock Bank, Poplarville; First Guaranty Savings Loan As- sociation, Hattiesburg; South Mississippi Bank, Prentiss; Han- cock Bank (Bank of Picayune), Picayune; Commonwealth Bank, Poplarville; and Mr. Frank Fortenberry, personal contribu- tion. Pearl River Hall, Movie Star win Firsts at Parade It was a super parade, said Dr. James Sones, chairman of the parade and dean of PRC ' s vocation- al-technical education. We didn ' t have as many bands participating but, I think we had better floats than last year. Pearl River Hall beat out Huff Hall for first place in the college division of the float competition. The Phi Theta Kappa organization placed third behind the two men dormitories. Movie Star, Inc., of Poplarville won first place in the commercial division for the third time during the past four years. Hancock Bank of Poplarville placed second and the Shady Oaks Gang placed third. Bands participating in the annual PRC event in- cluded Poplarville, Prentiss, Bassfield and the Pearl River marching units. Dr. Sones said there were 87 entries in the two mile long parade which made its treck through downtown Poplarville. Miss Tina Davis, PRC ' s 1982 Homecoming Queen, and her court were featured, as well as many state and local dignitaries. We had tremendous support this year, said Dr. Sones. Don Bradley Ford, (Poplarville) furnished us with 15 new cars, and many more businesses and industries pitched in to make the ' 82 Homecoming parade very memorable. Dr. Sones said he was also very impressed with the work and ingenuity of the student dorms and organizations. They did a terrific job, Sones said. Mrs. Kathryn Moody of Poplarville, the first woman on the Pearl River College Board of Trustees, became the first Pearl River College Alumna of the Year at the annual PRC Alumni Banquet. Here, Buddy Moody gives his mom a big hug after the banquet in the PRC cafeteria. All Wanted the Football When it came time for Shel- ton Ball (left) Pearl River Col- lege ' s Alumni president, to give away the autographed football to the earliest PRC graduate in attendance at the PRC Alumni Banquet, he came up four foot- balls short. All of these men graduated from Pearl River Col- lege in 1930 and were present at an afternoon reunion and at the banquet in conjunction with PRC ' s 1982 Homecoming. The graduates included (from left) Ball, Julius Rester, Daphne, AL; Wade O. Smith, Poplarville; E. L. Sims, Rolling Fork, MS; Leo Daughdrill, Poplarville and George L. There was an event for everyone such as the basketball shoot. A person had five shots to make as many goals as possible. If that person made all five shots they had a chance to shoot five more shots. The per- son that made the most was Lonnie Wil- liams, who made nine out of 10. There was a new event this year — Hacky Sack, a small leather ball about three inches in diameter that looked some- thing like a bean bag. The participant had five tries to keep the ball up in the air, then after the Hacky Sack hit the floor for the fifth time, all of the total number of hits were recorded. The person that kept it up the longest was Fred Parsons, with 26 hits, followed closely by Joey Caloway with 24 hits, each receiving a prize for their efforts. The winners of the wheelbarrow race are as follows: men — Don Williams and An- drew Hickman. Women — Angela Clark and Donna Meeks, and in the male-female category, Jeff Ashley and Angela Clark. The other Co-Rec event was the three- legged race, in which the teammates had their inside legs tied together, then they ran 50 yards with their legs tied together. The winners of this event were: male-female — Roger Herring and Joey Belk. Female-fe- male — Donna Meeks and Angela Clark and male-female — Jeff Ashley and Angela Clark. There were two events of accuracy, those being the volleyball serve and the fris bie throw. In the volleyball serve, the idea was to serve the volleyball over the net and land in one of three hoops on the other side. The winner of this event was Scottie Adam, who served six for six and the nearest con tender was Ricky Kirkland, who went four out of six. In the frisbie throw, there was a tie for first place, as two people went five for five, throwing the frisbie ten yards through a tire. The winners were Bobby DeVaughn and Dean Raborn. These are only a few of the people who won prizes of shirts, but there were other prizes given out such as frisbies, hats, cups, and other prizes. Whether everyone won an event or not, all the students won prizes, but they all gave it a valiant try. Everyone seemed to enjoy the Festival . . . after all, it was free. All the prizes were furnished by the Coors Company, which also gives the school $500 in sports equipment for the intramural events. 49 A production of the PRC Intramural Department Everyone had fun! BLOOMER BOWL 1982 Sophomores 12 Freshmen 0 Experience proved to be more important than youth as the Sophomores ran over the Freshmen, 12-0, in the fourth meeting of the Annual Bloomer Bowl, sponsored by SPARC. King and Queen were named at half time. Debra Argo was crowned Queen and Steve Seymour was crowned King. With each action of the game, students be- came more excited and the spirit increased. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves, even the losing team. Sophomores are from bottom left; Kim Sumrall, Marlene Breaux, and Debra Argo. Probably the spirit of a Wildcat football season is best shown during these seven days. And in a lot of ways it ' s a shame that such a fun week has to come at mid-season and before homecoming. The week, as usual started on Sunday night, Oct. 10, with each dorm testing the true competitive spirit of the other with the traditional water balloon raids. Kiddie Day, Hillbilly Day, Gum and Sucker Day and Maroon and Gold Day all took turns highlighting the week. Many people took part in the activities but more persons were content in just looking and snickering at the funny dress donning the campus. The annual battle was to take place on the Gulf Coast in the Biloxi High Stadium, a fitting place for the week-long cele- bration to conclude. The scene looked much like the old gym, as cake walks, haunted houses, basketball throws, ring tosses and a marryin ' preacher all gathered to celebrate. In the tradition of the Halloween spirit, there was the Reverend Knippers performing the scary task of hitchin ' those brave souls that were willing to take the supreme risk. In the always surprising, and more often than not, funny cos- tume contest, Donna Byrd and Kelly Jones won first place with their rendition of the mad doctor and his nurse . Second place was captured by Lori Byxbe in a costume of which no one was sure what it was, but was good enough to take second. Bringing up the rear was Bradley Brillo Bounds with something that looked like a vampire with the type of hair style that the well dressed vampire of the 80 ' s will be wearing. A look that one could really sink their teeth into. The Baptist Student Union sponsored a haunted house, some students left in such a hurry some of the fixtures were removed with them in their hurried exit. A good time was had by all students, faculty, children and friends. MASN Blood Drive THEY GAVE WITH A SMILE — Pearl River Col- lege students turned out in force to give the gift of life in the annual Mississippi Association of Student Nurses Red Cross Blood Drive. The MASM ' s goal was 60 pints but they passed that mark by 15 donors. Actually, 95 students and faculty members tried to give but 20 were turned down. The Red Cross crew had plenty of help as the PRC medical secretary students handled regis- tration and nursing students took blood pressure pulse and helped with refreshments in the recov ery room. 68 are great Intramural Sports — Weightlifting Winners (from left) Mark Cohn 176 180 division; Wardell Bourne 187 189; Eric Williams 190-235; Mike Ervin 148-153; Mark Lyles 160-164; Louis Cohn 176-180 division winner Intramural Football Champs Bandits Win Intramural Championship . . . After racking up a very impressive 51 overall ledger, which included a sparkling 3-0 division mark, the Wildcats met head-on with arch rival Gulf Coast, who was also sport- ing a very enviable ledger. The Bulldogs entered the contest with a perfect 6-0 record which also included a 3-0 division standing. What happened that night began the Wildcat turn-around. The outcome of that ballgame could have been directly re- sponsible for the PRC downfall or it could have been the natural way the year was meant to be. Whatever the case, the Wildcats lost the Gulf Coast game 17-14 and they never fully recovered. The Wildcats, trailing 17-14 with 8:18 left in the contest, seemed destined to take the lead when splid-end Jimmy English gathered in a deflected pass and raced down the left sideline to the Bulldog 8, before defensive end Randall Web- ster made the game-saving tackle. Three plays later, the Wildcats were aided by a dispute pass interference call, giving Pearl River a first and goal at the Bulldog one. An illegal formation penalty backed the Cats up to the 6, however, three plays netted PRC just four yards. Bidding for a tie with 5:19 left, kicker Tony Smith pushed a 21 -yard attempt wide to the right, preserving the win for the ' Dogs. Gulf Coast went on to win the South Divison title and shared the overall crown with Northwest Junior College. The Wildcats headed in the other direction. After the heart- breaking loss the Wildcats dropped its Homecoming game the next week to winless Southwest 27-24. PRC lost the lead but regained it late in the contest only to lose the match in the last few seconds. The Wildcats ' third loss in a row came at the hands of Co- Lin, who handed the ' Cats another setback at home. This time it was a 30-15 disaster and it sealed the coffin on what appeared to be another playoff for the ' Cats. PRC did have 13 players injured enough to miss the game against the Wolves and even then it took a bag of tricks for the Wolves to best the PRC eleven. The Co-Lin loss put the Wildcats with a 5-4 mark; remem- ber they were 5-1 just three weeks before, and it set the stage for a trip to Holmes Junior College. It was the last game of the year and it was also a rematch of the 1981 championship game. Holmes won that game and the state crown. The Wildcats did two things against the Holmes Bulldogs. They salvaged a winning season and they got revenge with a 36-13 slapping of the ' Dogs on their home court. It was a nice way to end a heartbreaking downfall. Case in point. If the Wildcats had beaten or tied the Gulf Coast Bulldogs they would have made it to the playoffs and the general consensus is the Bears and Wolves would have had a much tougher time when they in vaded the Dobie Hold- en Stadium. The Wildcats opened the ' 82 season with a 13-10 road victory of East Mississippi. The very next week the ' Cats dropped their home opener 19-15 against Itawamba. In that game the PRC team blew a 15-point third quarter cushion to come out on bottom. Edward Holt sparked the Wildcats against Hinds the next week with a 93-yard touchdown of the third quarter kickoff. PRC went on to win 28-10. PRC did end one jinx during the year and that came after PRC won the battle of the Cats. PRC defeated Jones 26-16 at home. Jones entered the contest undefeated and ranked ele- venth in the nation. The very next week PRC defeated upset-minded Coahoma 29-15. But it didn ' t come easy. Coahoma, a team that had a 33-game losing streak, fought back from a 14-2 deficit to take a 15-14 lead midway through the third period. Only 4:45 remained when the ' Cats took the lead for good. The week before the Wildcats took on the Gulf Coast ' Dogs the PRC group handed the East Central Warriors a 10-7 set- back in the rain at Decatur. In that game the Wildcats, fell behind early on a 91 -yard pass, before the defense took hold in the rain and the offense mounted just enough points to win. That set the stage for the Biloxi fracas . . . and as they say, that is history. 1982 Ledger PRC 13 East Miss. 10 PRC 15 Itawamba 19 PRC 28 Hinds 10 PRC 28 Jones 16 PRC 29 Coahoma 15 PRC 10 East Central 7 PRC 14 Gulf Coast 17 PRC 24 Southwest 27 PRC 15 Co-Lin 30 PRC 36 Holmes 13 103 ' Cats opened with close 13-10 win over East Miss 104 24 — Donald Cooper, 32 — Scott Senner ALL STATE — ALL STAR — ALL REGION GET POST SEASON HONORS — Several Pearl River College Wildcats were honored for their play during the Wildcats ' 1982 season.
