The symbol of all honor You ' ll be thru all time. You stand for the highest And we will uphold, Your standards and colors Of maroon and gold. And where e ' re we wander From these halls so dear. The clear call of our college We will always hear. The River Magic Call it what you want — the ' River Spirit, the ' River Magic or the Magic Spirit of the ' River — whatever this uncontrollable force is, it ' s still alive and well. The evidence is solid. Over 1,470 students at the Poplarville campus alone braved the fears of regis- tration, setting all-time attendance records for the fourth consecutive year. The force was caring. Mo casualities were report- ed as 2,627 students completed registration formali- ties at Hancock County, Lamar County, Forrest County and the Poplarville campuses. The long lines and trying times were eased by the magical spirit. Years and years of growth tells us that the magic is spreading — the River is growing — so Roll on ' River. s T n 15 The Magic means caring for each other . . . 12 17 Everything builds for this time Love Them Wildcats 29 Give Gs Time To Think, To Reflect 32 Brenda Price Crowned PRC ' s 1981 Homecoming Queen Brenda was escorted by her father, Mr. Jimmy Stokes of Petal. On Monday, students could be seen wearing their clothes inside out. Mainly because it was backwards day. There was no more chic dress on this college campus, only exposed seams and floppy pockets. Pleated skirts, pony tails and saddle shoes were the style of dress on Tuesday as the 50s came back in fashion. Grease flowed from men ' s hair and rolled up pants legs were every where. Probably the biggest laughs came on Wednesday which was ladies could pass for the 50 ' s declared Punk Rock Day. Many people thought that Halloween had come early as students dressed in outrageous colors, most notably, hot pink. Thursday and Western Day and the students quickly grabbed their ten gallon hats and boots to join in the occasion. The festive mood of being cowboys and cowgirls spread into the night as everyone rambled to the ho-down in the student center. The week ended Friday when all the students brought out the traditional school colors on Maroon and Gold day. Numerous pep rallies were also held during the week including the annual bon fire. But the real climax of the week was the 14-10 Wildcat victory over the Gulf Coast Bulldogs. What a Homecoming! The Poplarville City Police, fire department and the Han- cock and Commonwealth Banks here in the city should also be commended for the ex- tra support they gave all week long and especially Saturday, Sones said. Officials estimated the 1981 parade was more than two miles long and had more than 100 entries. Special guests for the parade included Bob Joiner, highway commissioner of the southern district; PRC Board of Trustee members and State Senator Martin Smith, and Representa- tive Wade O. Smith, Clifton Holmes, and David Smith. The Phi Beta Lambda organi- zation, the club for business ma- jors here on campus won the first place trophy in the school division of the parade competi- tion. Stiff competition came from the second place Masonry Department and third place DECA organization. In the commercial division it was Movie Star, Inc., again tak- ing the number one spot. Taking second place was the Commonwealth Bank here in Poplarville. Commonwealth employees not only won second place, but also sold PRC tickets during the week and also dressed for work Friday in PRC jerseys and shirts. The third place winner was Randy ' s Fitness Center here in Poplarville. Bloomer Bowl, Bloomer Bowl, Who Is Thy Winner? No one really knows who started the annual grudge contest pitting freshnnan and sopho- more co-eds against each other on the football field. Maybe no one wants to take claim to an idea which brings out the beast in the sup- posedly ' weaker sex ' . But weaker sex or not, the Bloomer Bowl is an annual tradition on the PRC campus, better yet, THE ANNGAL TRADITION. While the game could be best classified as contact flag football, the intensity of the occa- sion is best seen in the bumps and bruises covering the girls of both teams when the game is over. It is a game where the stakes are enormous: bragging rights for the next year. Naturally, the sophomores are the favorites going into the game. It doesn ' t matter if they have the better personnel. It ' s part of the tradi- tion. Another part of the tradition is the King and Queen of the Bloomer Bowl. It is sort of a closed election process to earn the right to reign over these festivities. Basically, as sources can disclose, the King is chosen by the football team, and the Queen is elected by the Bloomer Bowl players themselves. This year, Sylvia Sonier was crowned Queen of the prestigious powder puff game, while William Tillman was honored as King. Both were crowned by Dr. Marvin R. White, president of PRC. To better add to all the confusion involved in the game, faculty members serve as cheer- leaders. And do they cheer! The same cheer over and over for the entire contest. The outcome of the game? Well, after all the huffing and puffing by both teams the game ended in a tie. 0-0. To add insult to injury the two teams decided to try it all over again, and guess what? They tied once more, 0-0. There will be no bragging rights in 1981. The PRC mascot performed throughout both the football and basketball seasons. Poncho graduated from Picayune Memorial High School last May of this year where he was voted friendliest by the student body. His happy-go-lucky personality made him the most likely candidate for friendliest student. Here at PRC Poncho is majoring in petroleum engi- neering and has already gained the friendship of many students on campus. The one thing that prompted Poncho to try out for the mascot position here at PRC was his friends ' encouragement. Mow that he is mascot, he said, I think we have good teams and I ' m going to support them all I can. It is true that having a mascot can improve the spirit of the crowd because the audience participa- tion at the games played so far have been great. Borg-Warner Employees complete PRC Training FIRST PHASE TRAINING — Borg-Warner s first phase of their innovative Team Concept Management has been completed at the Pearl River College Hancock County Vo Tech Center. Pearl River provided the facilities and seven instructors for most of the training for the first phase of the 15 employees ' training. The Borg-Warner plant is located in the Port Bienville Park. They began practive back in early June and continued through the summer months and every afternoon during the football season. Through the rain, the heat, the cold and over the miles the PRC cheerleaders represented the ' Cats very v ell. Hundreds of signs, long and sleepy road trips home, and numer- ous pep rally skits were just a part of their efforts. PRCs Halloween 1981 King Queen Carnival Boo! It wasn ' t a typical night on the Pearl River College campus. The students who gathered ' round the cookout where eight bonfires were roaring, lighting up the evening sky, didn ' t even appear to be students at all. They looked sorta Mickey Mouse. And Minnie Mouse. In fact, there were some dressed as pirates, clowns, ghosts, mice, bees, and cats. Many were under the influence of the urban cowboy and cowgirl look, as well as witches, warlocks, and goblins. What a night! The event was the annual Halloween Carnival sponsored by SPARC. It was a chance to get away from the rigors of school life and enjoy a night of cake walks, pie throws, or maybe even a bingo game. All in all it was a night of fun and enjoyment, making a week go just that much easier for the students. Todd Bodner and Matt Jones were named co-winners of the Halloween King contest and Jennifer Cagel was named Queen. Boil, boil, toil and trouble . . . 68 1981 Football Wildcats 38 PRC Wins South, advance to playoff Whether senior college or high school, it is highly doubt- ful if any other school in the state of Mississippi has a richer football tradition than Pearl River College. The record book speaks for itself. Since football began at PRC back in 1922, the Wildcats have posted only seven losing seasons. There have been nine seasons where the ' Cats have gone undefeated. Twen- ty times the PRC teams have won eight or more contests in a season. The state championship trophy has rested in Poplarville an unprecedented 14 times. But there was much confusion floating around Pearl River College when the 1981 football season began. The rich tradition of football in Wildcat country had been un- der a thick haze the past four years. There had been no state champions in Pearl River County since 1976. No south division titles to boast about. No tradition. To make matters worse, the Wildcats had managed a 22-17-1 record during that time. And if that wasn ' t enough. Pearl River had lost four consecutive games to Jones Junior College and Gulf Coast Junior College. So the 1981 football season began with many questions to be answered. Could the Wildcats come back and estab- lish themselves as the football power of old? Did the Wild- cats have a chance to win the state championship one more time? Was the tradition over? 73 7 Lance Larson QB 5 10 168 Oak Grove 10 Chuck Bounds QB 5 11 200 Purvis 11 Tim Holmes WBQB 5 10 150 New Orleans, LA 12 Bobby DeVaughn QB 6 0 165 Hancock North Central 13 Andrew Hickman QB 5 11 160 Picayune 14 Edward Holt TB 5 9 160 Poplarville 15 Yancey McNeal TE-M 6 2 205 Mobile, ALA 20 J.D. Sophomore quarterback Lance Larson capped drives of 79 and 87 yards with touchdown tosses to Steve Dees and Edward Holt. Randall Collette and Stephon Fairley were credited with the other two touchdowns scored for PRC. Both scores came on the ground. Picayune ' s Bobby Stockstill added three of the four extra points. The Wildcats ' defense held the Trojans to 265 total yards and also played havoc with the Delta quarterback, picking off five passes during the contest. Anthony Ross, Charlie Hightower, Ricky Johns, Woodroe Ducksworth, and Ben Preston all had big nights for the River Bandits. Ross had 1 1 assists, three tackles and one interception. Hightower had seven assists, two tackles, one fumble recovery and also blocked one punt. Ducksworth made five individual tackles and had two assists and one blocked pass. Preston had two intercep- tions. 1 78 Although early in the season, it was already time for the first Big game of the year — the annual ' Cat fight between the Jones Bobcats and the PRC Wildcats. Although Pearl River supporters knew the game was important because of its influence on the south division title race, they also knew that Jones had dealt the ' Cats bad luck over the past few years. Four to be exact. The Wildcats were in jeopardy of losing their fifth straight game to the Laurel-based club. So with tension in the air, the battle began. Both clubs moved the ball offensively in the first half, almost at will. First the Bobcats would score, then the Wildcats would answer. When the first half gun put a halt to the action. Pear River trailed 22-20. But momentum changed in the second half. Woodroe Ducksworth recovered a Bobcat fumble and four plays later Bobby Stockstill kicked a 34-yard field goal to put the ' Cats up by one. A few minutes later Ben Preston inter- cepted a Jones ' aerial, setting up a 48-yard touchdown run by Donnie Lewis to give PRC a comfortable 29-22 advan- tage. Stockstill booted the PAT to up the spread to eight points as the third period ended. For awhile it looked like Pearl River would finally have the satisfaction of revenge over Jones. After four years of nearmisses it was left up to the Wildcat defense to pre- serve the win. Everyone waited for the final gun. The defense held strong through thirteen and a half minutes of the fourth quarter before cause for concern arose. The Bobcats had gotten hold of the ball with the clock lapsing its final minutes. It was surely to be their last possession of the evening. All the Wildcats had to do was hold their rivals for this last time and the game would be history, and a Wildcat win. But when the clock reached 1:37 left in the game, Jones ' quarterback Simmy Cooley lateralled to split end Chip Geiger who started running to the right on a sweep. Geiger halted to throw the halfback pass as the clock spoke 1:35 and counting. It was a prayer pass, the Hail Mary — he was going for all the marbles. The crowd was silent as the ball left Geiger ' s hand. Half hoping for a completion, the other half praying for an incompletion at worst, interception at last. With the clock at 1 :30 Geiger ' s pass fell . . . complete to Nelson Clayton for a touchdown. Then, Cooley passed to Jim Phillips for the two-point conversion. No revenge this year — just a long ride home from Laurel — 30-30 tie. The First Big Game of Year Edward Holt against Jones GAME 3 GAME 4 Pearl River College, 1 -0- 1 , erased any doubts of having a let down after last week ' s emotional 30-30 tie with Jones, as they whipped Coahoma 54 0 in Dobie Holden Stadium. It was a night for the record books as PRC rolled up 549 total yards, the fifth best performance for a Wildcat team in history. Eleven backs rushed for 390 yards for another fifth on the all time rushing charts. And while the offense was having a field day, the defense wasn ' t doing bad ei- ther. The Bandits held Coahoma to a mere 102 yards total offense while collecting three fumbles and two intercep- tions. Freshman Ben Henry was the game ' s leading rusher with 126 yards on seven carries. Bobby Stockstill tied a PRC record by connecting on seven PAT attempts and one field goal. The win boosted PRC ' s record to 2-0-1 on the season. Record book Falls in this Juco Game Pearl River held its breath during the 42nd meeting against the Hinds ' Eagles and came away with a 14-12 victory to up their season record to 3-0-1. The Wildcats got the first points of the game as Antho- ny Ross recovered a blocked punt at the Hinds 20-yard line. After handing the ball to running back Randall Col- lette on two consecutive plays, quarterback Lance Larson did the scoring honors, sweeping around the right side from 12 yards out. Stockstill added the PAT. Pearl River erupted again in the first half with a 57-yard drive which was capped when Hollis Payton scampered four yards to paydirt. Stockstill once again added the PAT, but the game was far from over. Hinds came back in the second half as the Eagles ' quarterback Ricky Irby found end Jerry Bryant on a 36- yard scoring pass. But the Eagles missed the extra point which would prove critical in the end. Late in the contest the Eagles went to the air again for a touchdown. This time Irby found Steve Winborne, closing the margin to 14-12. Hinds went for two points on the conversion but an alert Ben Preston stopped the rushing sweep short of paydirt. Cats now 3-0-1 79 It was a beautiful Homecoming GAME 5 Pearl River College lost its first game of the season Oct. 3, at Decatur as East Central passed their way to a 2118 come-from behind south division win. Not only did the loss drop the Wildcats ' record to 3-1-1, but it also dropped the ' Cats out of the national rankings where they held down the number 13 spot. PRC took an early lead in the contest as Kenneth Caines intercepted a Warrior pass and returned it 45 yards for a touchdown. East Central came right back to take the lead on a 34-yard pass. Todd Wall added the PAT for the War- riors to make the score 7-6. The Wildcats came back to regain the lead just before the half as Lance Larson hit Steve Dees of Picayune on a two-yard pass completion. PRC ' s final score came early in the third period as the Wildcats marched 77 yards with Donnie Lewis finding paydirt from seven yards out. With the game winding down, Pearl River led 18-14, yielding a touchdown throw in the third quarter, but vi- sions of Jones ' disaster lurked all around. Then lightening struck. With 1 :24 showing on the score- board clock. Warrior quarterback Micah Hazelwood threw the 42-yard bomb to Bruce Magee for the game-winning score. A game the Wildcats should not have lost. GAME 6 Pearl River ' s second Big game came at Homecoming. It was the re newed battle between PRC and Gulf Coast (alias Perk, Shrimp Suckers, etc.). Dobie Holden Stadium was over-flowing as an estimated 10,000 people jammed into their seats to watch the south division slugfeast. Pearl River opened the scoring in the second period as Randall Collette capped a 57-yard scoring drive going over from one yard out. Steve Dees increased the margin to 14- 0 when he gathered in a 5-yard touchdown toss from Lance Larson late in the first half. The touchdown capped a 74-yard drive. Gulf Coast rebounded early in the third period as they marched 53 yards on a screen pass to close the gap 1 4-7. A few minutes later, the Bulldogs were on the hunt again, traveling 74 yards, but wound up having to settle for a 20- yard field goal. Gulf Coast did have the ball first and ten at the Wildcats ' four-yard line, but the rugged PRC defense would not break and Gulf Coast was forced to settle for three points. In the final minutes of the contest. Gulf Coast made one last effort to get to the goal line. On a third down play at the PRC 18-yard line. Bulldog quarterback Zach Nelson passed to end Jim Estrada at the goal line, only to have Anthony Ross tip the ball away at the last second. On fourth down and 53 seconds remaining in the con- test, Carl Rodgers blasted up the middle to sack Nelson and end the game. GAME 7 GAME 8 PRC jumped out to an early 14 0 lead and then fought off a determined group of Southwest Bears to register a 20 13 win, leaving them one win short of the south division title. The Wildcats ' first score ceme after Henry Martin re- covered a fumble on the Bears ' 47-yard line and PRC took the pigskin to paydirt 1 1 plays later. Lance Larson got the second score on a 26 yard run. Stockstill added both PATs. Southwest came back late in the first half to score ten points in the final 1:10. Bears ' quarterback Mike Heitz- mann scored their first touchdown on a 13 yard run, cap ping a 77-yard drive, and Todd Haywood added the PAT and a field goal. Haywood kicked another field goal early in the third period making the score 14-13. In the fourth period Woo- droe Ducksworth stripped the ball away from Heitzmann and three plays later Randall Collette took the ball in for PRC, capping the nights ' scoring at 20-13. Freshman tailback Edward Holt picked up 84 yards in 17 attempts while sophomore Randall Collette managed 53 yards on 12 tries. Cats spoil Southwest ' s 1981 Homecoming 81 Steve Dees scores In another final minute thriller, the Holmes ' Bulldogs handed Pearl River their second defeat of the season 14- 12. Holmes ' quarterback Thomas Trussell threw the Hail Mary pass to Roderick Jones with 23 seconds left in the game to cap the victory for the Bulldogs. Holmes lit the scoreboard lights first in the contest as Jones pounded over the paydirt stripe from three yards out. Pearl River answered late in the second quarter as Larson hit Yancey McNeal with a 63-yard bomb. Pearl River went for two but were stopped short and the half ended 7-6. Pearl River came back in the second half to score two field goals by Bobby Stockstill but it wasn ' t enough as the Bulldogs won the game in the final moments. ' ' Hail Mary pass and catch gives Bulldogs win GAME 9 It took just one offensive play for the PRC Wildcats to get on the scoreboard against the Co-Lin Wolves. Lance Larson stepped back and hit split end Henry Martin for a 85-yard touchdown play, the second longest scoring strike in PRC history. Martin played a big roll in the game besides scoring on the opening TD strike. He was also responsible for falling on a loose ball in the end zone for the ' Cats 20th point in the contest. Randy Smith added all three PATs on the night. The 21-6 win clinched the south division for the Wild- cats and set up a rematch in the first round of the state playoffs with Mississippi Delta. Randall Collette had a big night running the ball, picking up 106 yards on the evening. Bob-A-Lou picks up 106 yards against Co-Lin Wolves PRC closed out its 1981 season on a winning note beat- ing Mortheast 2114, but it didn ' t come easy. Northeast held the pigskin for the final 6:41 seconds threatening to overtake the Wildcats ' 21-14 advantage. With just twenty seconds remaining in the contest, the Tigers were looking at fourth down on the fouryard line. But confusion set into the Tiger offense and the ball was finally snapped with just two seconds remaining in the game. There was an option left, but defensive standout Yancey McNeal was there, along with Glen Meranto to shut the attack down at the two. Northeast got on the board first with a 58-yard drive, capped by a 37 yard pass for the touchdown. Pearl River retaliated when Bob Collette scored on a three-yard run. The play was set up when Meranto recovered a fumble on the Tiger 16. PRC ended the closing minutes of the first half with another score as Larson drove the team 81 yards in eight plays and hit McNeal with an eight-yard pass for the score. Early in the third period the Wildcats upped the score to 21-7 as Hollis Payton dove over from one yard out. But then trouble began. Still in the third quarter, Larson passed to Payton who fumbled after the catch giving Northeast the ball on the PRC 36. Phillip McDonald scored three plays later on a ten- yard run around the right side. The Tigers had cut the lead to 7. The game continued until the final minutes when the ' Cats held off the long, futile Tiger drive to close out their regular season at 7-2-1. 82 DIVISION PLAYOFFS Anthony Ross The Wildcats ' first post-season appearance in four years also brought on the worst half performance by the team. It wasn ' t so much that PRC was losing to Mississip- pi Delta 7-0, the same Trojan team the ' Cats had downed 27-14 in the season opener, but the fact that PRC had a net total offense of only 28 yards. PRC had had three fumbles. PRC threw two interceptions. PRC was lucky the game wasn ' t already a blow out. In the locker room the words were simple from head coach J.C. Arban. I told them it was up to them, said Arban, if they were tired of playing football, then go out and play the way they played in the first half and there would be no practice on Monday. The strategy worked. The Wildcats scored 19 unan- swered points in the second half. Ralph Preston started the ' Cats comeback, intercepting a Trojan pass on the PRC five-yard line. Seventeen plays later, Lance Larson threw his first of three touchdown passes to Henry Martin from six yards out. Tony Smith ' s extra point attempt was wide to the right. Next, it was Kenny Caines ' turn to intercept a Trojan aerial on the PRC 38. Larson immediately hit Steve Dees with a 40-yard bomb and two plays later Larson connected with Edward Holt for the score. But, the two point conver- sion failed. A fumble recovery by Mark Lichtenstein set up Pearl River ' s game-clinching touchdown. Starting from their own 34, Larson threw a screen pass to Holt who put it into fourth gear and went the distance for the score. Smith drilled the extra point as the game ended 19-7. Holt 83 STATE PLAYOFFS FINAL COMMENTS For the first time in four years the Pearl River Wildcats had advanced to the state JuCo championships. And to make matters that much nicer, the game was being played at Dobie Holden Stadium, plus, the winner would go to the Garland Bowl in Texas. The 8-2-1 Wildcats would be facing the 9-2 Bulldogs, a team that Pearl River should have beaten earlier in the season but lost, 14-12. The game started out as a defensive struggle with the Wildcats failing to take advnatage of two Bulldog fumbles. Twice the ' Cats were given excellent field position. Twice the ' Cats came up empty. What happened after that is a low feeling in every Wild- cat supporter. So low, many people would rather forget about that Saturday night in Poplarville. In just two quar- ters, the Holmes ' Bulldogs placed 31 points on the board — 31 unanswered point. And after the game was soundly out of reach, maybe as good sports. Holmes allowed Larson to run around right side from three yards out to complete the nights ' scoring at 31-6. No championship, no title, no Garland Bowl. Just the biggest margin of defeat ever re corded in a Mississippi State Football Championship game. It might seem that when a team loses a championship game that the entire season has gone for naught. Although the pains of a 31-6 loss to Holmes, not to mention losing a trip to the Garland Bowl, had a great toll of grief to the players, students and supporters of PRC, the season was very successful. Mo team in the history of PRC has set so many records which will now become the goals of future Wildcat squads. Fourteen new listings under a host of headings will now be inserted in the Wildcat Record Book which dates back to 1922. This year was the most the ' Cats had accomplished in four years. Oh, it ' s true PRC had winning seasons in 1977, 1979, and 1980, but not the kind of season Pearl River is famous for. Just barely breaking the 500 mark might be a good year a t other schools, but not at the River. 8-3-1 is a good PRC season. We might not have an overall championship trophy resting in our showcase, but our tradition was renewed this year. A few years from now, no one will remember if we won the state crown or not, but they will remember the River tradition. Maybe we won more this year than ever before. Coaches J.C. Larson and Ducksworth were instru- mental in leading the Wildcats to the south division title and a runner-up spot to Holmes for the overall state crown. PRC posted an 8-31 overall ledger. The PRC players also named tailback Randall Collette of Cecelia, La. and of- fensive guard Paul Mitchell of Oak Grove most valuable offensive players. Defen- sive back Ben Preston of West Marion and nose-tackle Charlie Hightower of Vernon Hill, Va. were tagged most valu- able defensive players. Mark Fails of Bassfield was singled out as the Wildcats ' special team MVP. Larson passed for 1611 yards and 15 touchdowns. The Oak Grove native ranked fifth on the all time list for num- ber of touchdown passes thrown in one season. He is second on the all-time list for total passing yardage in one season. Ducksworth was named the most valuable all state south division defen- sive lineman during the regular season. He was also selected for the Souths all- star team and was named second team ail-American by the Junior College Grid- wire. Ducksworth had 51 tackles and 49 assists this past season. Randall Collette, the Wildcats ' out- standing tailback from Cecelia, La., was the ' Cats leading rusher for the last two years. Collette ' s 664 total yards this season puts him sixth on the all time rushing leader chart for a season. His freshman performance of 606 yards also etched him into the eight all-time place. Collette also holds the all-time single game rushing title. Last year against Southwest, Collette picked up 224 yards for the record. This past season Collette scored five touchdowns, and made all- state and all-star. Paul Mitchell, of Oak Grove, played right offensive guard for the Wildcats. He did an outstanding job his freshman and sophomore years as a Wildcat. Just this past week, Mitchell was elected Mr. Pearl River College by his fellow class- mates. Ben Preston led the Wildcats with eight interceptions and 29 tackles and 25 assists. He was named all-state, all- star and honorable mention ail-Ameri- can. Charlie Hightower made 46 tackles and had 38 assists on defense for the Wildcats. He also led the team with four fumble recoveries. Hightower was also a standout during the North-South JuCo All-Star game. J.C. Arban, the Wildcats ' head coach said many senior colleges have been in touch with at least a dozen of the sopho- more Wildcats. We ' ll have several players going to senior colleges, Arban said. In fact five or six of the players have more than one option to continue their football and edu- cation. 90 Wildcat Marching Band Does Outstanding Job Representing Pearl River College Doyla Kellar Student Director Drum Section (From left) Joe Polk, bass drum; Todd Moody, triple toms; Tami Theriot, cymbals; Ron Ducarpe, snare; Sharan Stewart, cymbals; Billy Berger, snare; Milton Wiley, bass drum; Tommy Bridge, snare; Sammy Lowe, bells; Conrad Caruso, bass drum. Sponsored by the SPARC Organization, the gala event included a visit from the very merry man himself, Santa Claus. The highlight of the festivities was the dorm song- fest where Marion Hall captured first place with their rendition of Angels We Have Heard On High . Sec- ond place went to Huff and Crosby Hail. In the celebration ' s first dorm decoration contest, the winner was Pearl River Hall. The dorm lool ed like the north pole as the columns in front of the building were decorated to look like candy canes, lights were stretched from all sides of the residence hall, and a nativity scene was set up over the en- trance. 1 believe this was the best Christmas celebration we have had, said Dr. Becky Askew. 97 Songfest winners from Marion Hall Two wise men? By the time the Wildcats finished the regular season and the state playoffs the team had put together 19 victories against only eight defeats. According to Larry Stanford, PRC ' s sports information director, the 19 wins are the most recorded since at least the PRC championship year of 1966 and is probably the most ever. Records are rather sketchy but it is a tcnown fact that PRC teams back in the earlier years did not play as many games as the teams of the past two decades. Whatever the case, Billy Holmes and assistant Ned Eades, led the ' Cats to a super year. When this annual was sent in for publication the Wildcats were on their way to the Region 7 Tournament of the National Junior College Association playoff in Memphis. Editors of the ' 82 Wildcat waited as long as possible to include the activities of the ' Cats, however, final copy was required before the results of the regional play. It was known that the Wildcats would play Paducah, KY in the first round action. In state play the Wildcats came up one basket short from competing in the south championship and overall tournament. Gtica, the south division champs and a loser to the Wildcats earlier in the year, edged PRC 75-73 at Gtica. The loss was hard to swallow as the ' Cats had led in the contest by eight points at one stage in the second half. During the year the Wildcats defeated every south division team at least once except Gulf Coast. The ' Cats wound up in third place in the south division with a 9-5 mark, only one game behind Gtica. The ' Cats had been in first place during the mid-season. Leading the Wildcats were sophomores Jeff Grey, Picayune; Gary Russ, Picayune; John Williams, Chesbrough, LA. and Renee Brown of Lafayette. The sophs all played an important role in the success of the ' Cats. On the freshman list, Phillip Bernard, of New Orleans was the force, as he averaged 18 points per game, and was the league ' s inside terror. Poplarville ' s Tony Woody, New Orleans ' , Glenn Boyd, Chesbrough ' s, Mathew Bacon were all starters for the ' Cats during the year. Other freshman who played important roles during the year were Vic Travis, Purvis; Randy Smith, Petal and Ben Henry of Poplarville. 1982 was a good year for the Wildcats. Coach Holmes managed to return the Wildcats to a state and regional power. 1981- ' 82 Wildcat Record 63 72 62 86 89 112 62 90 75 53 67 81 86 66 57 73 •90 127 191 66 67 55 76 106 64 75 PRC PRC PRC PRC PRC PRC PRC PRC PRC PRC PRC PRC PRC PRC PRC PRC PRC PRC PRC PRC PRC PRC PRC PRC PRC PRC PRC LSU-A TYLER. Both of these stats are records here at Pearl River. Gnder the guidance of Billy Holmes and Ned Eades, the PRC ladies repeated an excellent performance which was started last year. For the second time in as many years the PRC She Cats advanced to south State, overall state tournament as well as the Regional 7 Tournament of the National Junior College Associ- ation. When we met our final deadline (we waited an extra week to get this in) the She Cats had defeated Co-Lin 79-71 for the South crown, but had lost to East Mississippi 78-70 in the overall tournament. Also on schedule was a match with Martin, TN in the first round of regionals. PRC basketball fans will always remember Shelly Dedeaux of Hancock North Central, Glenda Gardner of Spring Creek, LA, Phyllis Favors of Daingerfield, Texas and Willie Jean Briggs of Waldo, Ark. They were all sophomores who led the Lady ' Cats to never before reached heights.
