.... u uuu out rom the day that I was born I waved the Flag . . . Elton John Leja Rutherford Editor Linda Dupuis Assistant Editor Larry L. Stanford Advisor The Wildcat 1976 Pearl River Junior College Poplarville, Mississippi I used to be a rolling stone . . . With our great nation currently celebrating its 200th year of exist- ence, the Wildcat staff felt that a bicentennial theme for our 75-76 ed ' tion would be most proper. Last year, about this time, an English recording artist by the name of Elton John recorded a song called Philadelphia Freedom , honoring the bicentennial year of the United States. We were very impressed by the lyrics in this tune which prompted us to use it in the first 32 pages of the 76 Wildcat. Philadelphia Freedom was written by Elton John and Bernie Taupin and was copyrighted by Big Pig Music, Ltd., London, England, in 1974. The record, which sold in the millions, was released by MCA Records, Inc. of Universal City, Calfornia. 3 Yd leave to f ind the answer on the road The less I say the more my work gets done . . . 13 Philadelphia Freedom took me knee-high to a man . Photographer Larry Stanford gambled on the weather against a pressing deadline, but amazingly the day turned out to be one of the few sunny and warm days of the month. The day was cut short because of a spring football scrimmage and a basketball game at Co-Lin. As usual, several of the favorites were football players and cheer- leaders. Chosen Mr. and Miss PRC were Ricky Cuevas of Lumberton and Patricia Robinson of Bay Saint Louis. Sophomore favorites included Catha Langley, Waveland; Sandy Sones, Sones Chapel; Judi Sinclair, Columbia; Sam Piazza, Bav Saint Louis; Tony Walker, Ville Platte, LA; and Randy Anderson of Purvis. Freshman favorites selected were Beth Delia, Hattiesburg; Kathy Milton, Bogalusa; Lynell Powell, Oak Grove; Mike Magee, Bay Saint Louis; James Fine; Bay Saint Louis, and Donnie Sorrells, Picayune. Perk Week at PRC is special; special enough to have two annual pages devoted to the event. (Check Student Section.) No matter who you are: commuter, faculty member, dorm student or Poplarville resident, it ' s a time of the year that cannot go unnoticed. Pep rallies, water fights, and more pep rallies highlight the week. Parades down- town, Go To Hell Perk buttons are just common occurrences. Some things may be forgotten by River students in the years to come— but never Perk Week— just ask a PRC graduate. 53 Durenda Necaise selected queen Part of the traditional activities of any homecoming is the selection and crowning of the homecoming queen, the nexus and symbol of the annual festivities. In the last few years, some colleges have broken with the precedents of decades by electing male stu- dents to this post of honor, instead of a pretty female, but at Pearl River the old values still hold true. Queen for the 1975 homecoming was Durenda Necaise, a pre-law major from Pass Christian. She was a sophomore representative on the student council and an avid sports- woman. She enjoys swimming, tennis, horseback riding and dancing. Durenda also was selected to model for Apple ' s LTD of Poplarville, and received Miss Dixie Drawl honors earlier in the year. 55 Catha Langley Patricia Robinson Judi Sinclair Soph.— Waveland Soph.— Bay St. Louis Soph.— Columbia Homecoming Court 1975 Court from left: Beth Delia, Kathy Milton, Teresa Woodward, Queen Durenda Necaise, Patricia Robinson, Catha Langley, Judi Sinclair 56 Student Council (L-r) Seated; Tricia Robinson, Sec; Teresa Woodward, Fr. Melissa Hall served as president and did a good job leading the other officers. 162 members turned out for the two-day state conference, with Miller Hammil acting as faculty sponsor. The council also took credit for many campus changes, such as dances, movie presentations, and active part in the administrative council. 59 Sophomore Class Officers s (L-r) Greg Rester, Vice President; Durenda Necaise, Representative; Retta Curran, Secretary; Danny Milton, Representative Freshman Class Officers 60 (L-r) Teresa Woodward, Representative; Mike McGee, Vice President; Karen Adams, Secretary; Steve Albritton, P Moragne, Representative Color Guard The ROTC at Pearl River is in its fourth year at the school, since the course was cancelled way back in 1948. Devoted to education in the theatrical arts, Delta Psi Omega produced two one-act plays with a bicentennial theme in the fall semester and planned to do even bigger and better things in the spring. 67 The 1975-76 cheerleaders were a very active energetic group. They supported the Cats all season with signs on top of signs, pep rallies, and numerous other little extras that add to any athletic department. Long trips, sleepless nights, sore and strained throats and pulled muscles were commonplace. The six girl group received many notes of praise throughout the season from stu- dents, players, and faculty alike. 69 Wildcat Band What is a true River Spirit without the band. Ask the cheerleaders. Ask the football and basketball team. They will all tell you the hub of PRC ' s support is the marching Wildcat band under the student direction of Retta Curran and directed by Ray Patten. The march- ing maroon and gold group followed the Wildcat athletic events throughout the year, but they also marched in a host of community parades and did concerts for the local high schools within the PRC district and community. 70 1976 Wildcat Marching Band Band members: Tim Burge, Bubba Cambell, Charles Carter, Retta Curran, Kim Carter, Glen Davis, Thomas Davis, Stephen Deornellas, Keith Dossett, Hubert Dyess, Edna Ensiten, Butch Flynn, Neal Foxworth, Debbie Gates, Maurice Gates, Larry Gilbert, Anola Heldt, Eva Holston, Jane Howard, Eddie Howk, Glenn Jackson, Wanda Jones, Pam Kirkland, Connie Lee, Ginger Little, Calvin Moody, Susan Moragne, Vicki McVay, Vicki Page, Ray Payton, Archie Rawls, Greg Rester, Norman Rester, Clyde Sellers, John Shamburger, Johnny Shamburger, Fred Smith, Peggy Smith, Richard Smith, Selena Smith, Sharon Smith, Brad Travis, Noel White, Dionne Williams, and Teresa Woodward. 71 String of Pearls and now the famous String of Pearls— the pride of Cat Country . This was the intro for the 15 girl precision dance group that per- formed at all athletic events and other activities of the college. The group marched in no less than eight parades during the year and was a beautiful complement to the PRC band. Robin Moody served as choreographer for the group. The Pearl Sisters From left. Eva Lynn Holston, Jackie Clark, Patricia Robinson, Sharon Smith, Glenda Odom, Catha Langley, Katrina Adam The Pearl Sisters were one of the most sought after groups in South Mississippi during the school year. Year before last the group began on their own, however this year, with George True directing and loads of new mikes and speakers to work with, the sextet began a determined effort to become the River ' s singing sensation— the school ' s own touring public relations group. And tour they did, from the Coast to the Capitol, as one news headline billed them. High schools, nursing homes and numerous civic clubs were on the weekly list of stops. Before the year was up an hour long concert was planned just for them. The only problem concerning the group was that the entire group were sopho- mores. Next year the sextet would have to start over. There will be others, a college official said, but it ' s doubtful there will ever be a group any better. Well said. 74 PRC Singers -R) 1st row— Glenda Odom, Dionne Williams, Cindy Daughdrill, Butch Flynn, Susan Moragne, Lisa Gibson, Vickie Page, Bonnie Lee, Katrina Adams. 2nd w— Steven Deornellis, Margaret Holmes, Peggy Smith, Brenda Butler, Eva Lynn Holston, Linda Presher, Eddie Howk, Q| en Jackson. 3rd row-Huey Kenmar, Fred riith, Retta Curran, Archie Rawls, Sharon Smith, Cherry Beeson, Tommy Martin, Greg Rester. In fact over the last four years the pub- lication has won more than forty state and national awards and was named the state ' s best in 1974 and 1975. Results are not back on the progress made by the paper this year. In the years past the Drawl has been the pacesetters of all Mississippi ' s 1 7 junior college publica- tions. Full size format, color pictures, dynamic artwork were just a few of the things done for the first time by the Drawl. This year was centered around two editorial staffs during the Spring ' s weekly publication issues. The new idea gave twice as many people the chance at working more on the publication. Several of the editors were putting their experience and training to use by working part time for commercial publications. „ , Bob Kiser Clyde Sellars 78 Sports editor Advertising Staff 1 Staff I SHOP RITE to O.. C. Arban, David Johnson, Harvey Seligman, Herb Morris 89 Those hot August days optimism running high . . More than seventy Wildcat hopefuls reported for practice during the first week of two-a-day work-outs in the hot August sun. J.C. Arban was new as head coach, however, the year was beginning with a lot of optimism and a stable of talented athletes. But a new offense and untried players at several positions presented a problem. After a couple of weeks of tough workouts, the school sponsored a giant cook-out for students, players, faculty and player ' s parents. Immediately following the Cats held their first real scrimmage of the year. The time had come— everything was set for the home- opening clash with East Central. Thunder 90 Walker and Arba PRC ' s hopes of J.C. Arban returning national spotlight was certainly spoiled in the opening game as the East Central Warriors dealt the Cats a 16-9 setback. Frank Woods scored from the one and Gary Miller kicked a 27 yard field goal, giving the home team a quick 9-0 lead. The Warriors cut that margin to 9-6 at half and really caught on fire in the third and final periods. East Central scored 10 points in that final stanza enroute to the win. Looking back a lot of fans say the Cats lost because of one long run, where they had gone to sleep in that last quarter. But at the time more supporters were pondering the question of just how good the Cats would be in 1975. 92 i P % 0 Season begins in second half at Miss. Delta After thirty minutes of play the fans still had no indication that e Cats would be a title contender. Mississippi Delta, one of the weaker north division teams had them 6-0 at half. However in the third quarter the River finally put it together. The season for the Wildcats had finally begun. Cavataio rambled for 7 and 32 yard scores early in the third quarter and Andy Robichaux added six more points in the fourth. PRC had broken the ice-they had found themselves- the River was ready for the remaining season. 93 Cavataio, Walker lead Cats over Jones The Cats were alive, and the Jones Bobcats were the first to find out just how tough they would be the rest of the year. 26-6 was the score as the offense netted nearly 500 yards in total offense. Cavataio had another big night, picking up 121 yards and scoring on a 58 yard jaunt. Woods picked up 77 yards and scored two six-pointers. Tony Walker passed and ran for 207 yards and one touchdown. Co-Lin and Perk were next on the menu. Hand will not stop 94 CAVATAIO! Co-Lin next in line The PRC-Co-Lin contest was tagged as the battle of the veers, and it also meant who would challenge Perk for the top spot in the South. Arbans veer, with quarterbacks Walker and Mike Magee running it to perfection, overwhelmed the Wolves, totaling 571 yards and 20-6 score. Walker ran for 97 and passed for 157, freshman Magee gained 61 and chunked for 112 more. Larry Harvey and Robert Hudson caught bombs for scores. Randy Anderson led the defensive unit. The scene was now set for the ultimate PRC-Perk clash. 95 PRC 29 - Perk 36: Enough Said The Pearl River Wildcats played with their hearts on their sleeves October 11, but that was not enough as the nationally ranked Perkinston Bulldogs held off a last quar- ter PRC rally to win the annual showdown of the southern conference powers, 36-29. Gulf Coast (Perk) took the game ' s opening kickoff, but after a series, could not move down field. Perk then took advantage of a costly Wildcat error. As the ball bounced around after landing, it brushed the leg of a Wildcat blocker; Perk covered, and took the first of many ' gifts ' from the Cats. Before things settled down Perk quarterback George Sekul had thrown on the first offensive play for a 23 yard touchdown. Henry Johnson missed the extra point as PRC spotted the Dogs six points. After exchanging punts. Pearl River ' s offense finally got untracked and moved to the Perk 21 yard line, only to run out of downs. The frustration of the past unsuccessful series only served to add fuel to the ' fire ' power of PRC ' s veer offense on the next set of downs. The series covered 65 yards and ended with a slashing 23 yard run on a draw play by Frank Woods. Runs by Tony Walker and Rusty Cavataio set the stage for Woods score and as Randy Boyette hit true on the extra point the score stood 7-6. Randy Anderson intercepted an errant Sekul pass at the midfield stripe, setting up the next score for the River. Rusty Cavataio followed the blocking of Charles Pigott, Ed Porter, Sam Piazza, and Larry Harvey to score from four yards out. Randy Boyette was good for the extra point and the score stood 14-6 with 9:38 remaining in the half. The half ended with the score unchanged and the Wildcats had manhandled the number two team in the country for an entire half. The third quarter proved to be disastrous for the upset-minded Wildcats. Ironically, it started off with a good PRC drive into Perk territory, but typical of the period, ended as the offense ran out of juice at the 25 yard line. Gulf Coast then took the ball 75 yards to paydirt for six points and faking the extra point, ran for two more, to knot the score at 14 apiece. Walker, PRC quarterback, was knocked dizzy in the next series and Mike Magee entered the contest. The young freshman appeared to have the Cat ' s moving, with a 15 yard pass to Cavataio, but on the next play he tried to hit Leslie Hinson over the middle and suffered an inter- ception. The culprit was Harold Coleman, who raced to a score from 46 yards away. The Cats once again tried to pass to Hinson over the middle. This time it was Walker doing the passing, but the results were the same, an interception. Hinson, however, had little chance to catch the ball as he was blasted to the ground by a Perk defender before the ball arrived. The score stood 28-14 and some people filed out of the stadium. Luckily for the Wildcats the third quarter ended, but the bad breaks didn ' t. Sam Piazza, set to punt at the 10, watched a snap from center go sailing over his head on PRC ' s next possession. The native of 96 Bay St. Louis saw the pigskin bound into the end zone and save a GC touchdown by knocking the ball out of bounds, giving u the two points. The Bulldog ' s ensuing possession, proved to be a fatal one fo the Wildcats, as Henry Ford ' wheeled ' 45 yards to light up th final points of the night for Perk, 36-14. And then the Wildcats proved they had character and starte playing come-from-behind football. An eight play, 75 yard Riv drive was halted by an interception at the Perk goal line. Not t be denied, Joey Wesley recovered a Gulf Coast fumble two pla later and the River was Rollin ' . Mike Magee cooly dropped ba in the pocket and forced a perfect scoring strike to Tim Heldt an the score was 36-21. PRC tried an onsides kick. It failed, b Ricky Cuevas recovered a fumble on the very next play to what was shaping up to be a story-book finish. Pearl River couldn ' t move the ball from the GC 40 yard li and with 6:44 remaining Perk once again had the football. Ran Anderson, Joel Hemba, Marvin Davis and Steve Moody teamed to shut off the Perk offense and set up a punting situation. Ste Shepard and Donnie Sorrells got together for a blocked punt a recovery at the Gulf Coast 21 yard line, as it became obvious th those fans that had left early had made a mistake. It was perfect timing on both Robert Williams ' and To Walker ' s parts as their efforts brought six more points to t scoreboard. Williams ran a post pattern across the middle a latched on to a Walker aerial. A super catch by Billy Russel f the two point conversion tightened the throats of Perk fans a tightened the score to 36-29. Heart-broken, tired, bruised, but nonetheless proud, the tried once more to make the dream comeback a reality, b simply was not to be, as Walker was hit hard behind the line a fourth down play with only seconds on the clock. End of game-PRC-PERK Week ended -Score-36-29. Homecoming was easy . . ruised, hurt, saddened, but nonetheless proud- bounced back from the heart-breaking loss to erk and outmanned the Holmes Bulldogs 34-0, to capture their homecoming tilt. Offensively the Cats massed 482 yards to only 108 for Holmes, as the contest was never in doubt. Walker and Magee and Cavataio all scored on short running plays. Magee also connected with Billy Russell for long fourth period scores. Anderson, Cuevas, Steve Marvin Davis, and others all played an outstanding game. Cats letdown at Northeast PRC ' s only obvious letdown of the year came against the North- east Tigers at Booneville. PRC won 14-10 but not before being scared in the last stanza. Cavataio scored early in the first quarter after Donald Hall set up the tally with a returned interception to the five. Emerson Aborom, who came into his own late in the year, weaved his way for a 44 yard score. At the end of the first quarter | PRC led 14-0 and it seemed to be another easy night. However a third quarter surge put the Tigers behind only 14-10. Later in the last period NE threatened to go ahead as they were driving deep in Cat territory. Larry Harvey, Anderson, and Nagy came up with the play of the night to stop the Tigers at the PRC six. As the final gur sounded the River was at the Tiger one, but Arban elected to leave the score at 14-10, possibly in salute to a fine Northeast effort. 98 Southwest was easy The night at Southwest was an easy one for the Wildcats, as they trounced the Bears 35-15. Robichaux, subbing for injured Cavataio, scored three short touchdowns and Walker and Aborom their usual good night. The win left the Cats with a 7-2 ledger and a 4-1 divi- sional mark. The last victory was a total display of class as the players. Pearls, band and cheerlead- ers, along with a host of fans, teamed together for one hugh effort. The third place finish in the conference was a lot better than recent years, yet the season ' s outcome had to be disappointing for Coach Rea and the sophomore players. This was to be the year of the Wildcats. Many sports writers and other coaches had picked the Cats to be the team to beat. How- ever, the year turned out to be a series of ups and downs, and hot and cold performances. When the final copy of the annual was sent in the team was waiting and hoping for a Gulf Coast win over Co-Lin and praying for a lucky flip of the coin. If Gulf Coast beats the Wolves, the Cats and the Wesson crew would wind up the season tied and would have to flip a coin to decide the third place finisher. The 1975-76 squad consisted mostly of sophomore players with some of the best individual talent to grace the campus in a long time. Johnny Woodland, better known as Po-Jay, the hustling Jerry Alford and Hugo Blakeney as well as Rodney Shows all from Hattiesburg will be remembered for years to come. Roger Ladner and Wayne Cuevas of Hancock thrilled the crowds with their ball handling and outside shooting. Nathan Middleton of Picayune will be remembered for his smooth turn around jumpers. Keith Jones and Way Duckworth were the foreigners on the squad. ' Tree ' Jones was from Slidell, La. while Duckworth hailed from Macon, Georgia. Neither played a lot of basketball but they did have moments of glory. The regular season is over, we of the 1976 annual staff hope we left out the part about PRC winning the state championship. 104 Johnny Po-Jay Woodland After 113-112 Win Over Utica Hinds on the road . . . Pearl River players and a lot of fans will remember the away game at Hinds that finished the season in December 1975. Coach Rea was ejected with somewhat of an unbe- lievable four technical fouls all in the period of less than a minute. The contest went on, however, Coach Rea had to view the action from the gym ' s entrance way. Coach Barnes came down out of the stands to take over, and the Cats came close to winning in the late going. These photos are a few of those run in the Drawl as an essay on the ref. Duck- worth (41) was given a stuff upper cut to the mouth and dazed for several minutes. The other pixs show Coach Rea standing outside peeking in, while the other gives a memo- rable fix of this particular ref. This same referee lost his cool moments after the contests and proceeded to make obscene gestures to a member of the PRC faculty. The overall record was 9-8 for the season but the 9-5 conference mark was the real highlight. Coach Barnes, with the aids of scholarships for the first time in the schools ' history blended returning sopho- more star Jo Ann Dawsey and floor leader Debbie Farve with a host of talented but inexperienced freshmen. On several occasions the She Cats lost by one or two points and that was in the last few seconds. At press time the girls were in third place and only one game out of first. The regular season was over but tournament chances were promising. No one can write about the girls without mentioning Coach Barnes. He did an out- standing job and was a favorite of the players and press. Dr. Barnes could always smile no matter if he was 20 points behind or two ahead.
