As we, the students of Pearl River, look back over the year 1974-75, many mem- ories flood our minds. The big events of the year stand out, but the little things, the day to day activities, also have a place in the pathways that our thoughts take as we engage in retrospect. Who can forget the many little moments that compose daily life at the River? Leaving the pleasures of quiet dreaming to get ready for a day of classes starts the morning for many PRC students. Going about the many little tasks that insure a full day ' s worth of presentable beauty, wondering if remaining in bed is worth one more cut in first period, trivial things that hold monumental impor- tance are all part of living in the dormi- tory. 2 And the Ritual Begins The day officially begins on the Pearl River campus with the opening of the cafeteria for breakfast. The morning trip from dormi- tory to cafeteria to post office and on to class has become almost a ritual at PRC. The outcome of an entire day can be deter- mined before 8:00 a.m. The breakfast menu, whether or not Mom remembered to send the weekly allowance, and the weather all decide if it will be a good day or a bad day. Although very few dormitory students rise early enough to ever see a sunrise, many students who commute must get up as early as 5:00 a.m. to catch the bus. It ' s a source of amazement to many students who stay on campus that the commuting students are always so wide awake when they get off the bus. X 1 3 Early Morning Hours The early morning hours at PRC are filled with many activities designed simply to brace the student for a long day. The student center is a focal point of activ- ity as both dormitory and commuting stu- dents come together to prepare themselves for classes with a stiff shot of hot coffee. The showers in the dormitory are usually going full blast at this time. With a large number of young people trying to share a small number of showers, havoc is sure to reign. Dormitory showers on the Pearl River campus are the breeding grounds for most of the pranks pulled on campus. NEITHER RAIN NOR SNOW NOR DARK OF NIGHT . 9? After the many preparations of the morning are over, classes finally hegin. No matter what the weather, no matter how many books you have to carry, no matter how sleepy you are, when the first period bell rings, the day has to begin. The student center always contains a few last minute stragglers. Those lucky enough not to have a first period class remain to goad the others on. Neither rain nor snow nor dark of night . . . will keep the day from beginning. V ■fill u i m - Though classes are considered a major part of life at Pearl River Junior College, memories are made during the leisure hous. Discussions underneath the shade of an oak tree can lead to friendships that last forever. These friendships are often among the fondest memories thai students carry with them as they leave PRC to go on to bigger and better things. Friends getting together to enjoy a few quiet moments are part of the magic of going to school on a small junior college campus. Playing together, eating together, just relaxing together all become part of growing together into mature adults ready to go out and meet the world. I NEVER THOUGHT THAT I WOULD SEE, A POEMAS LOVELY AS A TREE The huge remainder of the majestic oak is like a monument on the Pearl River campus. It has seen the youth- ful fares of many generations. It probably shed silent tears as it saw sons of the River go off to war. It watched as countless domestic crisis occurred under its boughs. And now, as it silently allows itself to be used as a setting for youthful shenanigins, it has personal memories of the many who have come before. 9 And Fun Begins After the school day has ended, many happy hours are spent as students engage in their interests on and around the campus. These interests include playing the guitar, playing intramural football, or practicing for intercollegiate football — and of course — girl watching. The many combined interests of PRC stu- dents is all a part of making well-rounded individuals. The Pearl River campus is sim- ply a stage from which potential nominees for life ' s Oscars play their parts. I As Darkness Begins As darkness begins to fall on the Pearl River campus, the activity is rather hushed. An air of expectancy reigns over the cam- pus as the evening meal ends. Both girls and guys get ready for dates, the squirrels and birds on campus settle in for the evening, and as the stars come out, the campus awakens from its nap and begins to bustle again. • Many students find the library to be the best place to get any studying done on cam- pus. With all the horsing around that goes on in the dormitories, the library is defi- nitely the late night place to be. Although the library has its share of PRC students every night, so does Bogalusa. Considered by many people to be the dating capital of this region, Bogie is one place that holds memories for practically all of Pearl River ' s alumni. 15 Lamar Hall Loses Roof On Friday, January 17, Pearl River Junior College suf- fered damage caused by one of the worst rain storms in recent years. Lamar Hall, the men ' s ath- letic dormitory, lost part of its roof causing six rooms to be flooded. Awnings in the front of the new gymnasium were blown away and a couple of cars had their windshields smashed by flying objects. The electricity was off, school was let out at 1:45, and a few girls cried. Pearl River was rather lucky, though. Nearby McComb suffered eight dead and several injured when tornadoes swept through. All in all, it was an experience few cared to go through again. Perk Week — you would have to be a part of it — to believe it. . . PERK WEEK Although practical jokes, water fights, and clowning around are an occasional part of living in the dorms at Pearl River, during Perk Week ttiese infrequent pranks turn into five days of f ull scale war. This is the only week of the year that people are allowed to give each other baths on campus, that the tu-tu bird comes out of hiding, and that a choo-choo train goes around the Administration Building. As soon as darkness fell each night, balloons, baggies, and any other container that would hold water were brought out and war was waged. It did no good to take a bath until just before you got into bed because you were sure to get soaked several more times before you even dried off. The tu-tu bird made a trip to the River just to celebrate the annual occasion. You certainly won ' t find him in any bird watchers ' guide because he ' s the only one of his kind, lie ' s native to the third floor Huff Hall, and his plummage is quite similar to cotton underwear. A human choo-choo train complete with flashing red lantern made its way around the campus on Thursday night of Perk Week. Its course was rather erratic, but its destination was a victory that just wasn ' t there. Homecoming 1974 . This scar ' s homecoming was dedicated to the 1924 graduating class of Pearl River Junior College. The day ' s festivities included a parade through town, the annual alumni banquet in the PRC cafeteria, the crowning of the homecoming queen, and, of course, heating Northeast 37-6. ilding floats was a task that took main of the clubs the entire week to com Clubs, classes, and departments of PRC entered floats in the parade along wit! many organizations and businesses in anc around Poplarville. In the Pearl River divi- the electricity department won first he carpentry and masonary depart- ments tied for second, and the Bapti-t Stu- dent Union took third. Cheryl McCullouch reigned throughout the day as queen of the festivities. A sophomore from Bay St. Louis, she was featured in the 1 at the Alumni Banquet, am just before the g Homecoming was a day in which memorit wen- relived, but even more, it was a da which memories were made. However, before the final pages were submitted, only two of the original group remained. Che- ryl McCulloch right was the editor and she received help in the form of copy writing and lay out from Tony Smith below. Sheree Ladner worked on the student section the first semes- ter, but it was the work of Dixie Drawl members, Mitch Deaver and Scott Bond, pictured below plus Sid Holston and Suzanne Vogel that helped get the job done when the final shipment was sent to Dallas. This year ' s yearbook was hampered because it had only 128 pages compared to the 192 the year before. With this size book, only the highlights of the year could be covered and, obviously, many things had to be omitted. We still hope this book will bring back many of the fond memories of your stay at the River. Cheryl McCollouch To ny Smith Sheree Ladner Pearl River Cheerleaders 30 31 32 Baptist Student Union P.R.C. The head coach quit, a hurricane delayed the season three weeks, and had breaks at the most inopportune time set the stage for the Wildcats Even with all the obstacles, the Cats Mill hail a chance to repeal .1- south champs up until the last game. The Cats opened with a very impressive win over the Delta Trojans, over all state champs from the previous year, and it looked a- if the 1971 season would be nothing more than the usual PRC powerhouse. However, the Jones Bobcats, a team that experienced an even wor-e Near than Pearl River, surprised the Poplar- ville crew with a 1 1-7 win at the Ellisville campus. The Cat- cam.- close, but fumbled al the Jones goal line to stop themselves, and perhaps set the stage for things to come. Pearl River returned to the comfortable confines of the Dobie Holden Stadium the next Saturday to eke out a hard fought 16-1. ' 5 win over the Co-Lin Wolves. The win pushed the I ' HC record to a 2-1 mark for the traditional clash with arch-rival Gulf Coast. The Saturday night clash at Bioloxi with the Perk Bulldog- proved too much for the Maroon and Gold as they were -hut out for the fust time in s, sear-. Only the penalties against the Bulldogs kept the score as close as the final 21-0 mark. The next Thursday night came too soon as the proud but soiled Wildcats traveled to Goodman to battle the usually ik Hob ics Bull, lugs. A new coach, a not so good record, and a relatively non-supportive following marked the 1974-75 season for the girls basketball team. Dr. James Barnes. Pearl River Junior College Science Instructor, was named head coach of the She-Cats just one week before their first fracas. Even though the season ended with a rather disappointing record, Doc Barnes did an extremely admirable job. Sophomore Suzanne Sims and freshman Jo-Ann Dawsey, and Kathy Eaves played outstanding ball throughout the year.
