Pearl River jumped off to an early lead when Quarterback Gene Estapa ran an option play around right end for 69 yards and a TD. Estapa broke three tackles at the line of scrimmage and then outran the Perk defenders to the goal, but the lead was shortlived as Perk scored on a 33 yard TD run by QB James McKay. The Cats tried a two point conversion and failed; score — Perk 15, Cats 13. Wildcat supporters were feeling better, you could hear the crowd mumbling, We ' ve still got anoth- er quarter left and the River is on the move. About this time a hole came in the boat, and ole man H Bad Luck jumped s(juare on PRC ' s defensive team ' s back. McKay threw a pass to Fredericks for a 30 yard gain, hut the ball fell to the ground. Perk ' s Gary Benefield scooped it up and scored from 42 P B yards out. Beck kicked the extra point and Perk had 22 points on the board. At this time the bad luck PRn S r switched from riding with PRC ' s defensive to PRC ' s offensive team. The Cats had the ball only 2 plays and fumbled deep in their territory. On the first play of the fourth quarter, Autmon scored from 9 yards out. Beck kicked the PAT. Pearl River still did not roll over and die. Estapa brought them back down the field and threw an 18 yard pass to Mike Harrison for 6 points, then passed to Nat Faircon- netue for a 2 point conversion — Perk 29, PRC 21. The Wildcats held Perk on downs and took over on their own 19 yard line. With 3:52 left in the game, PRC started its march for a tie. Kenneth Hathorn got 6 up the middle, Estapa threw to Harrison for 5, then to Harrison again, Mike had a lot of running room, but the ball just fell out of his hands and the Bulldogs recovered it. Gulf Coast scored it ' s final TD on a 3 yard run by Autmon, then ran for a 2 point conversion — the game was over — Perk 37, PRC 21. East Central fumbled six times on the slippery turf, losing five of the costly bobbles. No. 31, Kenneth Hathorn was the clutch runner of Pearl River with Lou Martensen, Tootie Fair- child and Larry Tatum doing the job on defense, Mike Harrison, Jerry Washington, Martensen and Thomas Tillman picked on EC ' s bad passing and fumbles. Coach Morris served as a scout for Coach T. D. Holden. 86 Wildcat Cheerleaders Pearl River College Basketball Team The PRC Wildcat basketball team ended their 1971-72 sea- son with a 6-14 record. The team started out the season with a couple of impressive wins but following the good start, they hit a long streak of bad luck, but the Cats stayed together through it all and rallied toward the end of the season. Leading the Maroon and Gold in scoring was guard, Tony Graham with 18 points per game. The leading rebounder was Lee Jackson with 9 per game. Jackson often carried the scor- ing load and averaged 15 points per game. The River appeared snake-bitten for a part of the season and lost numerous games by the smallest of margins. In addition to Graham and Jackson, Mike Sumrall, John Merritt, Myron Labat and Wally Smith were key players all season. Following the Christmas break. Smith, Houston Brown, and Greg Shaw all showed marked improvement and were instrumental in Pearl River ' s late season success. Gerald Haddox, who began to see quite a bit of action at the end of the season; Harlon Brock, Marlon Broom, Reggie Smith, and Don Aultman rounded out the squad. The River played interesting ball and treated their follow- ers to many an exciting game. The club stuck together through a lot of bad luck and seemed to find themselves in the season ' s final weeks. Wally Smith and Houston Brown will return next year to form the heart of the 1972-73 Wildcats. 90 r L D C A T S W ALLEY SMITH G 6-0 REGGIE SMITH C-F 6-4 Coach: Miller Hammill Coach Miller Hammill is beginning his third year at Pearl River Junior College. In this book we have attempted to capture the fond memories, emotions, and experiences we have shared while at Pearl River. Our purpose has been to let you hold yesterday in your hands today — tomorrow — and forever. If we succeeded, our goal has been achieved. I would like to extend my thanks to the Yearbook staff for their cooperation, and my special thanks to Larry Stanford, Director of Public Relations at Pearl River Junior College, who has been our advisor this year.
