Dobie Holden Pearl River Wildcats The Pearl River Junior College Wildcats wound up their season by claiming a share in the 1952 Mississippi Junior College grid glory. The Wildcats reign as co-champions of the state. With diligent practice behind them and a burning desire to play one of the greatest sports of the field, the Wildcats went through the season with much success. Their record stands 9 wins and 1 loss. Coach T. D. Dobie Hol- den and Coach Dudley Miller, a pair of the finest leaders one can find, moulded the boys into a winning and championship team. Our hats go off to these coaches who are not only builders of a championship team but are great builders of character. Leading the Wildcats to the championship were Captains Joe Drennan and Jerry Conerly. Also leading the parade were four boys who were named to the All-State team of the conference. They were Bill Mitchell, a lightweight halfback who gained more than 1,000 yards on offense; Robert Arab Morris, one of the most versatile men playing quarterback and defensive safety; B. A. Bama ' Falls, a repeater from last season ' s selection, at guard and offensive fullback; J. Hugh Mitchell, a tackle from Picayune on defense who lead the Wildcats in holding the opponents to 66 points during the season. Eight other members of the Wildcat team were selected on the Honorable mention list. These are; Carey Bateman, Joe Drennan and Averiese Burge, ends; General Ox Breland, tackle; Jerry Conerly and John Skinner, centers; Alton Shell, halfback. It was shown that Pearl River fielded a true championship team in that two of its members, Bill Mitchell and Doug Holcomb, were named on the ALL-AMERICAN squad. Rudolph Thompson Managers: Fornea Spiers Jerry Conerly Center CAPTAIN Bill Mitchell Halfback ALL -STATE ALL-AMERICAN Robert Arab Morris Quarterback ALL -STATE - Ralph Mays Fullback PRC 46-13 Holmes Pearl River tallied in every period to topple Holmes, rolling up 237 yards rushing and 125 yards passing, for an offensive total of 362 yards. Bill Mitchell, a shifty halfback, scored twice before injury removed him from the game in the third period. Quarterback Robert Arab Morris made his debut at the downunder spot by tossing three touchdown passes, two to halfback Mays, another to end. Fred Seal. Leonard Sutton scored one tally while Alton Shell ran one play against Holmes; it was a 49-yard touchdown jaunt. PRC 15-0 Summit Despite rainy weather and a great amount of penalty mileage, the Wildcats copped their second win of the season by defeating the Southwest Bears of Summit with a 15 to o count. Bill Mitchell scored early in the intial quarter on a play that carried 25 yards. A safety accounted for two points before Alton Shell lugged the pig- skin over for the final TD. Drennan ' s last kick was good. The game ended with PRC on the one-yard line ready to score again. Le Fullback Jerry Sheffield Halfback James Seal Quarterback Jerry Goux Halfback PRC 0-20 Hinds Hinds scored on a 75-yard punt return, a 25-yard pass, and a sus- tained drive of 54 yards to hand the Wildcats their first loss of the season. The Wildcats seemed powerless against the heavy line of Hinds. The deepest the locals penetrated into Hinds territory was in the closing moments of the game when they went to the 20 on a brilliant run by Arab Morris, who had been trapped downfield on an attempted pass. PRC 25-7 Scooba A scrapping PRC eleven played one of their better games of the sea- son in defeating Scooba by a 25 to 7 count. The whole line blocked and tackled as they never had before and the backs out did them- selves in some flashy running. Bill Mitchell climaxed a 56-yard d rive by plunging over from two yards out. PRC got a break when Bobby Pearson fell on a Scooba fumble, his second recovery of the night. Four plays later Shell scored only to have it called back on a penalty. Shell did the same on the next play and this time it count- ed. Morris scored next from 24 yards. Bobby Pearson Halfback Lonnie Anderson Halfback Alton Shell Halfback H. E. Johnson End Maurice Regan Tackle David Smith Guard PRC 48-O Wesson Playing before a homecoming crowd of 5.000, the Wildcats walloped the Copiah-Lincoln Wolves by a 48-0 count in a game that saw Coach Dobie Holden using every man on the squad. In the scoring department, little Bill Mitchell scored three times, one off an aerial from Arab Morris. Alton Shell scored two tallies, w hile Ralph Mays hit for one. Morris scored on a 72-yard punt return through the entire Wesson team behind some beautiful blocking. It was Pearl River all the way from the opening quarter. In the second period the Wildcats turned on the steam and could not be stopped. Richard Young took over the OB du- ties from Morris in the second half and did a creditable job, hurling one touchdown pass. Pearl River linemen did a bang up job on offense and defense. Drennan kicked six out of seven extra points from place- ment. PRC 39-0 Booneville The defensive unit grabbed most of the glory against Northeast as they got their third shutout of the season. Three of Pearl River ' s six touch- downs were credited to defensive backfield play- -one on a punt return, two on pass interceptions. QB Arab Morris, who doubles at safety, returned a punt 62 yards to score. Lonnie Anderson, a defensive half- back got his first chance to shine when he intercepted a pass and re- turned it 90 yards for a touchdown. Bill Mitchell returned another pass interception 47 yards to hit paydirt. Mitchell also scored on a 23-yard offensive dash. Alton Shell scored 2 TD ' s on jaunts of 40 and 24 yards. Spearheading the Wildcat defense were; J. Hugh Mitchell, Falls, Skinner, Seligman, Penton, Fowler, Drennan, Dev- row, Pearson, Anderson, Mitchell and Morris. Averiese Burge End R. J. Penton Tackle PRC 38-0 Perkinston Pearl River turned in the best offensive show of the season by defeating arch rival Perkinston by a count of 38-6. Bill Mitchell scored 3 touch- downs. The steady halfback opened the scoring with a 53-yard sprint. Alton Shell scored twice, once on a 38-yard pass from Richard Young, who directed the team almost all of the second half from downunder spot. Young climaxed the scoring by going over from the Perkinston four on a OB optional play. PRC 67-0 Moorhead Everything the Wildcats touched seemed to turn to touchdowns as they rung up a 67 to o win over a completely outclassed Sunflower Junior College eleven from Moorhead. Mitchell got things started by scamp- ing over from the 18. After that the Wildcats garnered nine TD ' s. Mor- ris passed to Mitchell for 21 to score; Bama Falls bulled his way 25 for one; Shell and Mays score on short runs; Young ran 33 yards to score be- fore passing to Averiese Burge for two tallies and Fred Seal another; and Morris ended the scoring on a pass interception that carried 35 yards. Joe Drennan booted seven good conversions and missed out on three. Douglas Holcomb Guard ALL-AMERICAN -Pred Spider Seal End Carey Bateman End Richard Young Quarterback Charlie Devrow End PRC 27-20 Decatur Led by Alton Shell, who scored all 4 TD ' s. and Bill Mitchell, who did some flashy running, the Wildcats came from behind to defeat an in- spired East Central team by a 27-20 count. Shell scored once on a 43- yard pass from Morris. This ran his year ' s total to 15 TD ' s in nine games. Drennan made good three of four conversions. The East Central offense had considerable trouble with the Wildcat defense led by J. Hugh Mitchell, John Skinner, David Smith and Harvey Seligman. It was a hard fought game that gave the fans a run for their money. Harvey Seligman Fullback PRC 13-0 Jones Ralph Mays scored early in the game while Bill Mitchell climaxed an 85- yard march in the closing minutes by driving over for a score and the Pearl River Wildcats became co-champions of the state. Mays scored his fifth TD of the season while Mitchell sent his touchdown score to 15 to tie with Shell for individual scoring honors during the 10-game schedule. Morris had his best night of passing, completing 10 of 11 tosses. Seal led in receiving department by snagging 4 passes. This 13 to o decision over Jones of Ellisville gave the Wildcats a record of 9 wins and one loss for the season. When the game was over, PR helmets flew into the air and the Wildcats shouldered Coaches Holden and Daley and carried them off the Gridiron. HORNETS ROLL TO NINE WINS Coach Louis Murray ' s Poplarville High School Hornets came up with an impressive record of nine wins and one loss after the 1952 football campaign, upholding the long record of outstanding High School teams here. Coach Murray, a former Pearl River College and later Mis sissippi Southern ace. directed the club to victories over such powers as Notre Dame of Biloxi, Long Beach, Brooklyn and Ocean Springs. T-Formation tactics kept the Hornets going at a winning gait, and directing the attack was versatile Don Ladner, ranked as one of the state ' s finest quarterbacks. Surrounded by talented performers like Thomas Pritchett, Roy and Ray Sinquefield , the terrific twins, and Charles Dearman, the Hornet ' s offense rolled at a smooth pace throughout the season. Charles Ray Wheat, Robert Wesley, Otis Sanford, Jimmy Stewart, Virgil Burge, Charles Tucker and Don Morris provided a sturdy forward wall crew, and the ever important relief work was capably handled by Russell Sinquefield, Gene Dearman, Marvin Gordon, Buddy Hall, Paul Sanford, Gary Hathorn, and T. Playing a Never-Say-Die brand of basketball, the Pearl River College Wildcats finished their regu- lar season in good spirits although the won-loss totals stood at 2-15. All through the season the Wildcats played clean, hard-fought basketball and didn ' t let up ' til the final whistle sounded. Leading the CATS with the Round-Ball were Emerson Ladner and Jim Murray, who both ended the season with over 200 points to their credit. Also doing a creditable job were; Fred Seal, a letterman of last year ' s squad; Dur- wood Speights , Sam Morris and John Scott Hathorn. Leaving the squad via the graduation route are; Fred Seal, Hershel Ladner, Emerson Ladner, Billy Wayne Smith, and Billy Juan Cockran. Returning lettermen to form the nucleus of next year ' s squad are, Jimmy Murray, Sam Morris, Harold Jones, Jimmy Lee, John Scott Hathorn, and Douglas Manton. The CATS have yet a chance to redeem themselves as they travel to Hinds to compete in the State Tournament. So, Good Luck to Coach Daley and the Wildcats in the State Tourney.
