WILDCATS TAKE MEMORIAL BOWL GAME 21-20 In the Jackson Memorial Bowl game the Wildcats tangled with the Cardinals of Lamar Junior College of Beaumont, Texas. The Texans were ranked second in the nation as a JC grid machine. The Cats went in as underdogs, but they again showed what champions are made of and outscored the Redbirds 21-20 in a typical thriller. Ezell scored twice and Branch once for the winning Wildcats. This com- pleted the regular season for the Cats. Ezell, West, Haiman, Miller, Cochran, and Alford shared the scoring honors for this final game. Branch β€” Back and Haiman β€” Back Campos Back Courtney Back PEARL RIVER KNIGHTS OF THE WAXED COURT These fast breaking, accurate shooting collegians were the stars that represented the Pearl River Junior College for the 1950 basketball season. This maroon and gold clad crew made an excellent showing against all competition in the fast Mississippi Junior College brackets. Strict adherents of the slow break style of basketball, these Wildcats are pic- tured above. Standing: Coach Woodrow Daley, Jack Daley, Emerson Ladner, hHu- bert Williams, Glynn Daley, Delbert Zengarling, Gene Watts, and Jake Glover. Kneel- ing: the all important manager hlugh McManus, Pascal Lott, Fred hHaiman, hloover Garrett, Billy Wayne Smith, Cecil Faulkner, and Wayne hHarris. Starters for the Wildcat quintet were Jack Daley and Hubert Williams, for- wards; Glynn Daley, center; hloover Garrett and Neldon Cochran (not pictured), guards. The Daley brothers and Cochran were members of the 1949 starting five. Also returning from last year ' s squad were Gene Watts and Fred Haiman. This marked the second season for Coach Daley to lead the Wildcat hardwood performers. hHe was an All-State player when a member of the 1950 Wildcat quintet. Facing a rough eighteen game schedule against such outstanding teams as Co- Lln, East Central, Perklnston, hiinds. East Mississippi, Jones, and Southwest Junior Colleges, the Wildcats of 1950 were one of the most feared teams in the loop. ll GIRL BASKETEERS Only three of the 1949 Wildcat sextet returned to form a nucleus for a hard- fighting girls ' basketball squad this year. These returning players were Bobbye Pearl Stringer, Frances Smith, and Betty Ladner. With a group of inexperienced players in the Junior College loop rou iding out the team, the Wildcat sextet developed into a hustling, scrappy ball team. Returning as coach from last year was Graham McDonald, whose 1949 basket- eers were the talk of the tournament. Coach McDonald has done an excellent job of handling these ball players, and even in defeat his team has assured the spectators of many thrills. Juanita Thigpen has been the ace in the sleeve for the Wildcat six, playing out- standing ball at one forward position. Working with Juanita have been Betty Ladner and Jennie Leath. Bobbye Pearl Stringer has been one of the outstanding guards in the circuit and has been a mainstay of the Wildcat defense. Teaming with Bobbye against the op- position have been Frances Smith and Sarah hiarrlson. Starting out late in the season, but quickly developing into one of the scrappiest of players and giving added strength in the defense has been Jo Beth Tyner. In the picture are members of the Wildcat sextet. Standing: Amanda Horton, Bobbye Pearl Stringer, Betty Davis, Sarah hHarrison, Marilyn Miller, Verlene Norton, Marlon Davis, Mary Taylor, Frances Smith, and Coach McDonald.
