edi High Schoo! Library Pearisburg Public Library Pearisburg High Sch Library THE PEARISCOPE Pearisburg High Schct Library The Peariscope Staff of 1954 has chosen as its theme “The Circus’’ — This is a very fitting theme as the organization of a circus and the administration of a school have much in common. The people who go to “The Circus ” for an evening’s entertainment know very little of the many months and often years of rigid training and strictly enforced discipline which are maintained to make the finished performance a success. Each act must fit in with the whole with clocklike timing and percision. There can be no hitch, “The Show must go on.’’ Many people, also, have very little knowledge of the plann- ing, hardwork, and study which are expended in making a suc- cessful school. The goal of a successful circus is to train each actor to give the best possible performance so that the patrons will have a feeling of getting their “money’s worth.’’ The goal of the school is to train the individual student to give the best possible performance so that he, himself, will be satisfied. T)e iicatioH No educational institution should be satisfied with any- thing less than the highest standard of training for the youth of our land. For this reason we humbly dedicate this, the 1954 edition of “The Peariscope, ” to the high standards set up by Dr . John Riddick and his staff of 1952-53 and the equally high standards practiced by the staff of 1953-54 under the able leadership of Mr. Postlethwait. “It was not ever thus.” Principal MR. Out of this large group starting to school that year, only 23 remain to graduate. However , during our elementary days many others came from many parts of the county to join this class of Nineteen Hundred and Fifty Four. In the fall of 1949 a miraculous event occured. The doors of old P. H. S. found this memorable class entering them . The school was vastly changed by this invasion, for never before had such a large number ascended on the school at one time. After that trying year of going through wrong doors, getting to class late and causing a general distrubance all around, this timid bunch of people emerged as F resh- men. Even in the Freshman year this class was very active in the varsity sports. The next year we were on our way up in the world we were Sophmores. In the true sense of the word, and as such were dispersed throughout all school activities. 1 952- 5 3 found most of the rough corners polished off, and as Juniors, the thunder- ing herd of 49 ' ers were becoming more civilized in perparation for the final peak. That was the year when it became evident that the Administration of the school was actually in the hands of this outstanding class. We made a five year contract with a new company for clas s rings. In getting ready for the Junior and Senior Prom, which is the big event of the school year, we had a Bake Sale, sold magazines and presented a Variety Show, to raise money. As Juniors, this class added much to the school. In the fall of 1 953 this class reached its Zenith when it lent its presence to the school as Seniors. The year thus far has been full of excitement and promises to be even more exciting as we order our invitations, hear speakers on behalf of various colleges, and enjoy to the greatest extent the dignity of being a Senior. SPORTS football Under the expert hands of Coach Emory Davis and As sistant C oach Danny Romanello, the Red Devils posted a 5 won, 3 lost, and 1 tie season. The Red Devils started by tying the once mighty Pulaski Orioles 13-13. Following this Dublin was trampled 30-0. Then the boys hit a rough road and lost to Christians burg 26-13, and to Galax 7-0. The team started on the up grade again by defeating Fries 13-6 and Peter stown 32-12. The Devils rose to their greatest height when they defeated the giant-killing Wythe ville Maroons 13-12. Radford found the Big Red team too much for them and bowed 13-6. The season closed with Narrows taking the Homecoming game with a score of 27-0. Such are the fortunes of a football team.
