Our anticipations were more than fulfilled. Our senior year has been an outstanding one. The highlights being the trip made to Washington in May, the senior play, and the banquet. Four of our seniors: Richard Bingham, Sally Gearhart, Jack Neel, and A. G. Phlegar are five year seniors. Joe Lewey returned this year to complete a five year course after attending Hargrave Military Academy last year. We welcome a newcomer, Fred Mason. We extend our deepest thanks to Mrs. W. L. Stevenson, our class sponsor, for her guidance and interest in our classroom and extra- curricular activities. For this reason they have cooperated with the seniors and sophomores in various activities; the foremost of which was their contribution toward the senior banquet. Although this graduating class of ' 49 is small in number, it will be great in character. S. due to the 8th grade draft. They have assumed the major respon- sibilities of the junior class producing a three-act play, An All-American Family, the proceeds of which went to finance the senior banquet. Coach Surber September 13 — Red Devils open against Christiansburg with a decisive 18-0 victory on a rain soaked field. September 20 — The team suffered its first setback against a district foe at the hands of a strong Wm. Fleming team in Roanoke. The final score being 13-0. September 27 — Devils jump back in win column at the expense of Dublin to the tune of 25-0. October 4 — Red hot Red Devils pull biggest upset of season over a fast and heavy Galax aggregation. Coach Johnson ' s bag of tricks collected 32 points to 13 for the visitors. October 1 1 — Roanoke foes again proved too much for the fighting Devils in the form of Wm. Byrd. It was a 0-0 ball game for one-half then the heavier Byrd team took over to post a 14-0 decision. October 17 — Devils pull another hot streak in scalping the Blacksburg Indians 45-0. Every play was a touchdown play. The team redeemed itself for the previous week. October 23 — A small team from Hillsville came to town and returned disheartened. The first team scored 14 quick points and turned it over to the subs. The second string made itself look good in doing about as good as the big boys, ending 27-0. October 31 — The Red Devils suffered a disheartening defeat at the hands of Pulaski. A lucky field goal in the last seconds spelled defeat after a blocked kick had tied the game up. The Devils almost scored on a long pass the last play of the game, but the final was 9-6. November 7 — Narrows came to town and suffered a 19-6 flogging at the un- merciful hands of the county seaters before the largest crowd ever to see a football game in new War Memorial Stadium. A crowd of 2,000 witnessed the fracas. Eight men finished their high school eligibility on a team that had a very successful season. Twenty-five men earned their letters this season. The Red Devilettes, under the supervision and coaching of Coach George Surber, surpassed in achievements, and ability the teams of former years. Many of the girls who earned their letters this year will return next season and for this reason, next year ' s team should be one of the district ' s best girls sextet. S. another successful basketball season. The team winning seven games. The team met unusual strength this year. The Red Devils were led this year by Captain Dick Bingham who was supported by the following lettermen: Jay Bingham, Guy Burnette, Fred Mason, Jack Neel, and Bill Williams. Last fall the band took an active part in supplying appropriate music for the Pearisburg High School football games. Early in the season the band was represented at the All-State tryouts at Marion. Winning contestants were Clara LaFon, clarinet, Becky Hargis, clarinet, Sally Gearhart, trombone, and Jennifer Smith, flute. The band was also honored by playing in Pulaski, Bluefield, Roanoke, Charlottesville, and at the Apple Blossom Festival in Winchester. This organization is composed of four students from each class except the Junior class who have two representatives. These students were chosen for their leadership, character and dependability. The student government has accomplished many worthwhile activities since its or- ganization: the publication of a bimonthly school paper, the selling of candy, and a general cleanup program. Those people with outstanding grades, strong character, and qualities for leadership are eligible for membership in this club. This year six new members were initiated into the club, both at the beginning of school and at the end of the first semester. The Beta Club was represented at the convention in Richmond during April.
