The objective of the Monogram Club is to encourage good sportsmanship and to further interest in athletics. In March ten girls were initiated into the Club. The Band Wc are the music-makers.” — O’Shaughnessy. Forward! March! One! Two! And forty-three boys and girls in snappy uniforms are ready to perform. No matter what the occasion — courthouse lawn Memorial Day program, family reunions, summer concerts, football games, political rallies, parades, commencement programs, or even escorting Santa Claus downtown in Roanoke or Pearisburg, snow or sun, the Pearisburg High School band and its director, Mr. Lyle Smith, receive tumults of acclaim.” The band won superior rating in Class C in the Sixth District Band Festival in Bris- tol and played in the Apple Blossom Festival in Winchester. Three members of the band, Jennifer Smith, Frederic Phlegar, and Creed Taylor, Jr., and David Smithson, Jr., a former member of the band, participated in the All-State Band, Norfolk, under the direction of Professor William D. Reveilli, director of the University of Michigan bands. Creed Taylor, Jr., won first trumpet seat in the All-State Band, and superior rating for his trumpet solo in the Band Festival in Bristol. Boys ' Monogram Club OFFICERS President Bill Crabtree Vice-President Frederic Phlegar Secretary and Treasurer Jack Neel Reporter A. G. Phlegar Sponsor. . . .Mr. George Surber The Boys’ Monogram Club, organized in the fall of 1945, has as its members the outstanding athletes in Pearisburg High School. Four charter members, Frederic Phlegar, Jack Neel, Bill Crabtree, and Creed Taylor, Jr., and their sponsor, Coach George Surber, initiated into the club in December and in May several boys that were eligible, dressed in the traditional three-cornered costume” of the younger set. A letter won by participation in one of the major sports, football, basketball, or baseball, and initiation into the club are requirements for membership.
