Girls ' Basketball The first practice session, the second week in December, witnessed sixteen girls eager to open the 1947 basketball season. Handicapped by size and lack of experience, the Red Devilettes suffered quite a few losses but came through the regular schedule with a 19-18 edging of Pulaski and won a 2 5-22 victory over Pembroke in the district tournament. Those who earned letters this season were Nancy Morris, Earlyn Johnston, Betty Sue Frye, Jean Smith, Kathryn Hale, Betty Jean Evans, Sue Shell Johnston, and Beverly Doolittle. Boys ' Basketball The hery Red Devils, coached by George Surber, stacked up seventeen wins against six losses to complete their 1946-47 basketball season. The Red Devils, sparked by four lettermen, traveled March 10-11 to Roanoke, where they defeated Spring Garden and Meadows of Dan in two hard-fought victories for the Regional Championship. The Red Devils scored a total of 821 points against their opponents’ 657. Richard Bingham took individual scoring honors with an average of 15.93 points per game. Baseball Nearly thirty boys answered Coach Surber’s call for baseball candidates this season by taking part in the first workout on the diamond. The Red Devils combined hitting power, pitching, and general baseball ability to win .700 of their games.
