Cheerleaders Action! Yells! Songs! Pep! Work! School spirit! Wc had all these and more, too, when the seven girls went into action to lead the cheering section for the Red Devils and the Red Devilettes. To these girls, Dorothy Dula, Capta ' n, Peggy Eaton, Sue Shell Johnston, Louise Peters, Peggy DeBoard, Jean Smith, and Kathryn Hale, much credit is due, not only for their support of the teams, but for the encouragement of stronger school spirit and better sportsmanship. Football The Pearisburg Red Devils were enthusiastic this football season, but failed to supply the victory punch in the first four games. The first taste of victory came in a 6-0 defeat over the Blacksburg Indians, followed by a trouncing of the Dublin Dukes 12-0, only to be set back by the Pulaski Orioles the following week by an equal score. However, the next week the Red Devils completely overpowered the Narrows Green Waves in a stunning 2 5-0 victory. The winning of this game over Pearisburg’s keenest rivals won for the boys the trophy offered by the Pioneer Club in 1943 to the team winning three out of five games. Coaches George Surber and Frank Painter led the Red Devils through the season. In the fall of 1946 the Pearisburg Lions Club organized a Quarterback Club com- posed of men in Pearisburg and vicinity interested in strengthening the athletic program.
