195! THE HAD ET 1951 DEDICATION This is a story, our story of the year 1950-1951 at our school. Peacock. This story actually started way back in 1894 when Professor Wesley Peacock founded P.M.A. We were one of the first private schools in Texas, one of first three schools in Texas to be recognized by the U. S. Government, and in 1908 we became the first school in any Gulf state to receive an A classification by the War Department. This is also a story of development, achievement, and improvement of our mental, moral, social, and physical beings made possible by the unusually good leadership and assistance of Colonel Wesley Peacock, Colonel Donald Peacock, Colonel Lawson Richardson, and the other faculty members. But most of all we owe this great year to a fine Cadet Corps. We hope this annual will be found among your treasured possessions, to be kept forever and to be opened often to help you recall this year at Pea- cock. When you open it, we hope it will renew old scenes; and when you close it, may you experience that spine tingling feeling as you remember the casual moments, the tense ones, and the proud ones we spent together this school year. It is with this theme and wish that we proudly present the 1951 KADET. Your Annual Staff. faculty faculty WWW 'pOAuittf cutd Sta MRS. DONALD PEACOCK 0? cu(tcf utcC CAMPUS We depict our environs, our buildings, barracks, and grounds—our habitat for the year 1950-51. What we may have lacked in expansive, pretentious structures, we were blessed with a most attractive campus. Our extensive lawns and tree bordered walks and playgrounds were pleasing to look at and easy to live with. Our community plan of housing, com- bined with a busy schedule, made our daily activities more varied and interesting. SENIOR TERRACE ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICES CAVALRY CORRAL COLONEL WESLEY PEACOCK'S HOME COLONEL DONALD PEACOCK'S HOME HOSTESS HOUSE PARADE GROUND LOG CABIN PLAYHOUSE ATHLETIC FIELD A CLASSES Day and night we were acquiring the ability to respond adequately to situations which may or may not have been previously encountered. As we marched to and from the classrooms. Student Council meetings. Night and Special Study Halls, and to Open Forum Assemblies, we came to per- ceive truths through thinking, memorizing, reasoning, and re- taining. We fully realize and appreciate that education is not merely preparing for life but is life itself. Our daily drills, inspections, weekly ceremonies, formation, demon- strations, marchings, sound films, charts, maneuvers, firings, roll calls, lectures—yes, even our tours all were a part in creating a well-appearing, efficient, outstanding cadet corps. INFANTRY WEAPONS We become acquainted with the .45 Colt automatic and the rocket launcher (bazooka) The sergeants make it easier with graphic charts, and then we dismantle the Ml rifle. It feels like a heavy stovepipe, but it shoots quite a flame. And then we listen some more and examine some more, like the carbine. We put in quite a few hours of demonstra- tion. listening, doing, running, crawling, creeping, and making platoon columns, vees, echelon lefts and rights. This was government inspection day, remember? GOVERNMENT INSPECTION The military day we have been working for! Army offi- cers. Col. Davies and Maj. ATHLETICS This year athletics played a greater part in our school cur- riculum than ever before. Through this enlarged athletic program (betters sports for more boys) we developed a new pride and esprit de corps as we rose to new heights on the gridiron, court, diamond, and track. Under the guidance of our coaches and the inspiration of our backers on the side- lines. we better learned the traditions of good sportmanship. to play harder, fair and square , and to win or lose with equal grace. Intermediate, and Junior Squads who competed in the annual Swim Meet, Woodlawn Pool. May 1951. ACTIVITIES The Student Council, pictured on opposite page, directly or indirectly governed most of our activities. This was the second year of our present council plan. With the foundation already laid, a new era and type of improvement began. In- stead of the strictest discipline, we began to appeal to the cadet's ethics and sense of right and wrong. It worked! Through the unprejudiced leadership of Colonel Richardson, our sponsor, we were allowed to give air to our complaints and suggestions for improvement of the school. Through the fine cooperation of the Academy administrators we achieved the best of our ideas. And the Student Council took on a new meaning: Student participation, democracy. Thus, our student government has contributed its part to this good year. STUDENT COUNCIL Council Members: Doty, Wright. Wasteneys. Crawford L.. Poteet. Hyatt. Drewa. ODDS AND ENDS Now we present a hodge-podge of this and that, some candid shots taken here and there during the year and under varied and sundry conditions. We know of no better way to close our album of memories than to make a few crazy-quilt pages of guys and gals (mostly guys) taken by our camera club members. You will note they are of good, fair, and lousy quality. If you don't find your mug in this rogues gal- lery, it isn't our fault. We warned you!
