Fears were quickly calmed when it was discovered that the circus was only the new Peace freshmen comiing into town. Moving in was quite an experience, especially for the poor sophomores w ho volunteered to help out! One weary sophomiore was heard to say, I can understand the trunk, and the five suitcases, and even the exer-cycle, but the kitchen sink? The next phase in the orientation cycle was meeting the roommate. This is always exciting for about the first five minutes; then true personalities surface, and all across the campus can be heard, I want the top bunk! That ' s my pink and green towel, not yours! and This just ain ' t gonna work! Usually, by nightfall most roommates have found something in common, and for the time being all is quiet on the western front. The highlight of orientation was the Convocation. At this time the Freshmen were given a k change to do well and to reach for their highest goals. The best part of the ceremony was seeing Dr. Sturdivant ' s glow-ln- the-dark robe! Mini classes began almost immediately, and all the girls got to view their teachers for the first time. Immediately they be- gan to formulate opinions a- bout each of their instructors, but some of the freshmen re- quested that some of their re- marks remain secret. At this time of the year everyone gives the red carpet treatment. Everyone does his best to make students feel at home and com- fortable with their new living arrangements. Little do they know that after the first week all will turn into norimal people again. ?5-T3Ed iejn.: ■■ ' ■■iBwr ■!li H 1 1 1 i H ■ HffiH H ■ _E I Eb ttii l H Hjp 1 r ||RP| H tl W i H •v. Who could ever forget having to squeeze into those uncomfortable shoes and go to the cafeteria to get acquainted with the staff? The reception was supposed to be a dignified, formal affair, but somehow It more resembled an affair of nerves, as two-hundred and fifty anxious girls tried to answer questions, balance plates filled with finger foods, and look pretty all at the same time. Twenty minutes after the start of the reception the sound of growling stomaches could be heard all across the cafeteria because, though everyone was hungry, all were too nervous to eat any of the foods offered at the banquet table. Always, one of the best parts of the reception is stepping back and observing the action going on all around. It is hilarious to watch all the students trying to act as if they know A hat they are doing. By nine o ' clock everyone is tired of trying to be chic, and the main point of concentration is the strawberry seed stuck between the two front teeth. All of the staff has welcomed you to Peace College, and now the only thing left to do is to head back to the dorm for a nightcap made up of a Domino ' s pizza and a Coke. The next morning ball gowns are packed away and jeans are donned for class. ia6 icai QyVo Peace College has an excellent group of students in its Fine Arts Program, and during the Summer of 1 9S1 Peace got to share some of this fine talent with Europe. Mr. Smith. Miss Vance, Mrs Fitz-Simmons, and Mrs. Black led a group of art and music students on a tour through several European countries ranging from Belgium to Luxenburg. The trip sounds like a lot of fun, but one tourist quickly pointed out that the main purposes of the tour were study and first-hand observation of European art and music. So, for the nnost part, the majority of the students ' time was spent fulfilling the educational requirements of the tour. The art students spent nnany hours in museums, and had to keep a daily journal. The music students worked equally as hard by giving concerts throughout Europe. Of course, all their work was not done in vain; each student received a class credit, not to mention the pure enjoyment of the trip. Everyone had a great time and left Europe with a sense of fulfillment. Europe will certainly never forget the summer that Peace came to visit; the girls left a lasting impression on everyone, especially the hotel managers who began to notice that their towel supplies were running low and that their electricity bill was incredible. Europe was not the only place that got to enjoy the skills of Peace ' s music students. The college itself got to see its girls perform by way of stu- dent recitals. Another event related to Fine Art was the visit to Peace by the St. Augustine dancers. They performed a series of modern dances ranging from a lovely duet to a delightful number from the Broadway hit The Wiz. All of the dancers were im- pressive, and their per- formance was full of variety and originality. Their show was a great source of enter- tainment to all. (D ..:. Dad gets out of the can, tucks in his shirt, adjusts his tie, then puts his hands in his pockets and tries to act comfortable. Mom steps out of the car, arranges her hair, and then gives you a big, juicy kiss on the cheek. This is the usual procedure for the beginning of Parent Weekend, and the 1981 gathering was no different. The weekend officially began at 1 O: DD on Saturday morning, and at the sound of the bell the parents were off on a high-speed race to do everything on the list. The first activity was the meeting of mini-classes. Here the parents were told how well them daughter was doing in all her studies. [But why did Suzy get four deficiencies?) Lunch was served following the classes, and one mother was heard to say, So, why do you never eat in the caf arena? Next on the agenda was free period, and every Peace girl knows that that means shopping! Two hundred weary parents were dragged around Raleigh by their clothing-starved daughters. One father was heard to say, That surely was an expensive free period! Pan ent ' s Weekend was certainly not without entertainment. For the sport ' s-minded there was crab soccer, and for the less active people there was a variety show. Dinner was served at 5; DO, and the entire evening was topped off by a Make Your Own Sundae party in Belk lounge. By 10:00 the only sound heard from the visiting parents was plop plop, fizz fizz, oh what a relief it is! Parent ' s Weekend was concluded on Sunday morning with a lovely Chapel service. The entire event was a success! TSP leQ ia WlAy i Peace College always seems to be on the go. and this past year was no exception, The activity calendar was full! One of the biggest events of the year was the North Carolina State Fain. For two weeks everyone reverted to hen childhood and had great fun riding the merry-go- round and pulling the prize-winning bull ' s tail. The weather was simply perfect for a fair! It was just cool enough so that everyone had an excuse to wear her new winter clothes. The fairground was dusty and smelled of livestock, but boy, were there a lot of w ell-dressed Peace girls! The fair had a little bit of something for everybody. There were plenty of rides and game booths, but it appeared that the major attraction for Peace girls was the dunking booth. When asked why, one girl replied, Well, I can ' t very well throw a baseball at my Economic ' s teacher, so I come down here and pretend that he ' s the one in the booth instead of the clown! Another activity that was a lot of fun was the Dating Game. The event was quite entertaining, and the contestants were real characters. One budding Donny Osmond refused to quit singing even when asked, and another naughty contestant asked some silly question about singing in the shov er. For enter- tainment between games the audience was subjected to a number of commercials. One in particular was the Fruit of the Loom advertisement which was so good that it made every- one want to buy Hanes. The State-Carolina dinner was a whole lot of fun, but boy was it ro A dy! Just the thought of it made Mr. Martin Calias. Mr. Cafeterial chew his gum harder in anticipation of the event. The Wolfpack mascot made his appearance and brought cheers from loyal State fans. The Carolina Ram was cordially invited to attend, but refused due to eweion rules. Each side had its share of off-colored chants and cheers, and more than one person left the cafeteria with a red face. ■I r yws l p y : yj c, m K ftz y mmAp W i V M ; i 22 2 B 4 Q ftld-Q e wi Q nxulne64 An eerie bo-o-o-o and a network of black and orange crepe paper set the scene for the annual Halloween dinner. Yes, the time of ghosts and goblins was upon us once again. As A e entered the Cafeteria door, we were enveloped by a feeling of dread and seriously considered splitting the scene, for the sights that caught our eyes were frightful! We all issued a sigh of relief when we realized that those frightful sights that scared us so badly were our own cafeteria staff led by that gum-chewing muscle man . Mr. Martin. The excitement grew as the night progressed: everyone was anxiously waiting for the big event — the costume contest! It certainly began with a bang as the cafeteria doors flew open and a herd of green-hooded creatures swept into the room. With something a little less than grace, they performed some sort of ceremonial dance, and then exited in the same style in which they entered. They won the contest hands down [mostly because the judges were scared not to give it to them!] Another popular spook that appeared in the contest was the Peace College airhead, and we all certainly related to that! The most frightening contestants to appear on stage were those three lecherous nuns who danced their way into our hearts. They were chosen as the most frightening because they scared the pants off the faculty! Halloween was not the only fright ening experience that plagued Peace College; another was the separated beam over the east side of the pool. The broken beam incident was met with some loud cheers and some tears: The freshmen applauded because they couldn ' t take the swimming test, and Mr. Lilley cried because of the extent Cand cost! of the damage. The pool area underwent extensive work throughout the semester, but the waiting was worth It. The new roof came equipped A ith a skylight which would not only conserve energy, but also looked great! Even Mr. Lilley smiled over the new roof Cbut wait till he sees the bill]. - -re nt OJi meS Chitter-chatten was heard throughout the campus as the graduates of 1 SB1 returned to visit with their classmates. As more and more of the graduates arrived, a panorama of fall colors burst upon the scene. The occasion might have been a fashion show, for the graduates displayed all the latest styles, not to mention all their school fads. This reunion found the girls catching up on the latest news: Are you still dating Wade? How do you like Chapel Hill? Isn ' t your hair longer? All these important conversations continued until the girls found themselves in a place that none had missed — the Peace cafeteria. As they tasted the delicacies placed before them, all the memories of Peace College meals floated back into their minds. One girl asked, Isn ' t the chicken better than usual? - fs.v friend answered, Yes, this time it tastes like chicken! Such a comment, of course, reflected all the good manners that she had acquired at Peace. After dinner, the graduates squealed with delight and anticipation to learn that they would now see a slide show of their graduation — thanks to Mr. King, who taped it on Peace ' s new color-video recorder. The girls found it hard to watch and talk at the same time. Oh, there ' s Mom with a rose in her hand and a tear in her eye. And, there ' s Dad; he looks sad and happy and proud, all at once. Is that a tiny tear in his eye? Has he just realized that his little girl has become a lovely young woman? There ' s my roommate; wonder if she still tapes that curler to her head each night before going to bed? Gee, did my hair really look like that? These slides were fun and brought back memories dear to the heart, a heart that whispered, No, I ' ll nev- er forget you. Peace Col- lege. I left you a part of me, and you gave me these memories to cherish forever. (D -1 - n (11 1 ej k  _ Q O aucA a a Here at Peace College, we get a real bargain: an education plus a taste of culture [even if that taste Is forced on us sometinnes]. There are many activities made available to us. from dramatic plays to economics lectures. The play Waiting for Godot was one such activity that entertained Peace students. During this play we saw the drama department at their best. We got to see vivacious Beth Harris Cdressed in fishnet hose, hot pants, and uncontrollable blonde wig and fluorescent lipstick) crack a whip and drag Suzanne Cannon around on a leash. As it turned out, everyone was still waiting for Godot when the play is over Cand personally. I ' m still looking for that guy!) In the meantime we sacrifice our study hours Cwhich I ' m sure we were going to use!) by attending a series of lectures and art events. One concert included a combination of flute, viola, and harp. Another enjoyable concert featured a solo-pianist performance. This turned out to be more interesting than we had ever imagined. Let me explain; The pianist that entertained us was from Chapel Hill. He got in his car at the appointed time and drove speedily toward Raleigh to give his performance. Upon his arrival at Peace College, he realized that his tuxedo jacket was hanging on the closet door in his bedroom. With something close to hysteria he began to pace and shake, for everyone knows you can ' t play the piano without a tuxedo jacket! But B: DO came and all was well; for Mr. Smith, our Superman in B minor, allowed the visiting entertainer to wear his own jacket. Perhaps one of the mast prestigious events taking place on our campus was the lecture given by Mr. George Guilder. On that night Peace students and Raleigh citizens gathered in the gym and heard a lecture on the nature of supply-side econo- mics. Guilder was certainly an impressive man Cor at least some thought he was! He used a lot of big words!) When we left, we were all much xA iser in the area of economics CMr. Killebrew made me say that!). ..S i-;Vi : 1 . After despairingly looking at the long line, I anxiously peeked down the banquet table to see what was on the menu. First, there was a tray of pickles, broccoli, cauliflower, olives and tomatoes Cand they were fresh, tool J. Then there were steaming dishes of baked potatoes that would actually melt butter CI mean margarine. 3 Beside the potatoes sat a mound of green beans that hopefully wouldn ' t taste like a tin can, and leavened rolls that could almost match Mom ' s homemade. The climiax of the dinner was the turkey and dressing entree, which v as excellent. The dessert table was a popular meeting place, and more than one girl was seen going back for seconds Cand thirds?). How can anyone forget the initial pain of pre-registration? Your schedule isn ' t right, you don ' t have a lunch period, and who in her night mind wants an S: 1 5 class five days a week! Well, finally everything gets straightened out, and we move on to a new phase of college life — elections. With ourfreshmien friends becomiing better acquainted with a college routine, it was nowtimie to elect freshmen class officers. This was an exciting timie which included posters, banners, speeches and bribery. Who would be our freshman Class President? Would it be Louise next door, or would it be some unfamiliar face you had never seen before? Only election day would tell! Although exams time had originally seemed far off, we abruptly found out that it wasn ' t! Nights at Tut ' s and N.C. State were cut short as all good Peace girls settled down for long hours of dedicated study (consisting mostly of reading all those chapters that we should have read weeks agol None of us wanted to see an entire semester ' s work shattered by a lousy final exam grade, so out came the eye-glasses and into the trash went the Glamour magazine as we all worked frantically to make the grades n had on- -- ginally anticipated. Ending the semester on a studious note, we packed our bags and rushed home for the holidays. u ATTumh ifli AnL ' v tA ywiA awnluow-n. Have you caught the Peace College Christmas Spirit? It ' s everywhere! For tomorrow evening is our big Christmas Dance, and everyone is in the dining hall making preparations. We ' re having a great band this year; they even play some beach music! And hey, what about our hall party planned for the f ollosA ing Monday night?! Has everyone signed the refreshment list? Make sure we don ' t have thirty girls donating one bag of potato chips! Another exciting aspect of a Peace Christmas is our delicious gourmet dinner. You can ' t miss it! All of your favorite desserts will be displayed in abundance. Just remain settled until you have seen the fabulous Christmas Program coordinated by April Snow. For this year we are presenting an altered version of Tvwas the Night; Before Christmas. Girls, the Christmas program is over, and it is now time to join in on the Christmas Chain. Remember to put on your running shoes and look out for those leading sophomores on third-floor in Ross! For they are traveling at full speed as they trample down halls and stairways. Remember to hang on tight! The Christmas season has brought lots of excite- ment, but it A ouldn ' t be complete without a Get- Together at Dr. Frazier ' s home. For at this time we are in the company of trea- sured classmates, delicious goodies, and a tree which glows radiantly. W t 1f f . l l l HH I t i l J aYea, Sea Following the holidays, we returned to school eagerly anticipating all of the exciting activities that a new semester holds. Those first two weeks were accompanied by a hectic pace which included buying new books, preparing for rush parties, making necessary schedule changes and sending in our last deposit for the spring cruise to the Bahamas. For this was a busy time of last minute activities, life-long decisions, and formal graduation arrangements. Yet, somehow the springtime weather changed this air of seriousness into a feeling of lightheartedness and sensitivity. School work became less demanding as sA ' e lay on Peace Beach soaking up those warm rays of sunshine. Thus, the glory of new spring dresses suddenly brought about crash diets and vigorous exercising. Tabs and salads soon replaced our usual midday meals of bread, potatoes, and cake. As those last few weeks of school could be counted down, likewise could the last few dollars in our bank accounts. However, somehow we always managed to pack ten people in Dad ' s station wagon in order to make an economic week-end beach trip Cit didn ' t matter that we had to sell our souls to get those last few dollars]. These days A ere so memorable as we came back to school the following Sunday evening with wet clothes, suntanned faces, and not a darned bit of completed homework. Within 1 2 yeans, she has com- plied as outstanding record of 21 3 wins and 52 losses. She is an aggressive, outspoken, and hand-workjng coach. However, it is qualities which help to bring out the best in her players, therefore helping the college have another win- ning season. We thank Miss Cox for the hard work and de- dication she has given to Peace. Lu Underhill ' s famous lay-up never fails. sr THE GREEN GIANTS STAND TALL As usual, the well-coached Green Giants provided their fans with an excep- tional season. With the coolness and experience of the returning sopho- mores, combined with the sparky play of freshnnen. the Peace Basketball team became known for the exciting play. The smoothness of each pass balanced with the gracefulness of each lay-up made for a chilling and invigor- ating season. The three co-captains. Ellen Essick. Jan Rogerson, and Tamara Franks, led the Giants to victory time after tinne. The sophonnores leaving are Ellen Essick. Jan Rogerson, Tamara Franks, Peggy Alston. Teresa Mueller, and Sharon Dunston. vWHWrWi! Ill THE STROKES OF VICTORY Domineering and energetic best describes the 1 9Q2-Q3 Tennis team. This closely-knit group of girls had a good season due to the precision play of volved. Upholding the fine tennis tradition set forth at Peace is a difficult task, but A ith hard-work, training, and loads of self-confidence, this year ' s team took win- ning in stride. The graduating sophomores are Staria Bunker, Kelly Key, Leslie Lewis. Laura Pilegge. and Diana Gordon. Leslie Lewis was chosen for the All- American Team last year. There were only three Freshmen on the team, they include: Kim Westnnoreland. Ann Hasting and Gin- ny Goodwin. In the image of Irving Berlin ' s quotation. The tough- est thing about success is that you ' ve got to keep on being a success. The tennis team has upheld that success this year. Leslie Lewis shovA s much determination as she hits a two-handed backhand. iiiii r Staria Bunker, the captain of the team, reveals tremendous concen- tration as she hits a fore-hand. 1.1 INTRAMURALS, A BIG SUCCESS The 1 9B2-B3 intramural season was one filled with laughter, enthusiasm, and competition. Rivalries be tween dorms often sparked the end of a terrific sea- son. The year began with softball and volleyball and was capped off with backgammon, bowling, and a swim meet. Also, the Sophomore-Freshman powderpuff game was a big success. Meg Barnes, who is president of PSRA. is quoted as saying, ■Tve been pleased with the participation in the events. We have an enthusiastic freshman class. • ' Miss McNair. a former student and now Director of Student Affairs, says this about the intramural program ■ ' Ex- cellent leadership and enthusiastic participation is what made the intramural program such a success. Whether as a participant or as a spectator, everyone involved in this years intramural program found three dominating traits — fun. relaxation, and f riendshipi i fi J II 1,1 Date Nov . 1S-20 Nov 27-aB Dec P Dec 4 Jan. 8 Jan. 3 Jan. - A Jan. It ' s hard to believe that we have completed four sennestens at Peace. For we actually enjoyed the delicious finger foods at the President ' s Reception, didn ' t sleep through all of Convocation, and didn ' t pass out while reciting the honor code. These are real accomplishments! Of course, this is not to mention all of the nnany other progressive events which will always be remembered. During our two years at Peace the college budget was increased greatly; self -determining hours for sophomores became a reality, Carolyn Gay introduced new friendship with girls ' school mixers, and new teachers became accepted and respected. It ' s hard to believe that we are really leaving a home which is full of so many memories. However, as suitcases and boxes block doorv ays, we recognize that a phase of life is coming to a close just in time for a new door to open. Regardless of the bountiful tears running down our faces, our inner feelings of insecurity and uncertainty are not completely soothed. Thus we must cherish the unforgettable memories, appreciate the mature person we have come to know, and cling closely to our dreams and ideals. For we sincerely thank Peace College and the impact which it has made upon our lives. CD m D I - I immm Qj ci( )ni Qya ' ( M €6 Have you ever stopped to think how unique Peace College is, and how special it is because of this uniqueness. Where else can you find such nicely furnished rooms that are vaccumed and bathrooms that are cleaned for you? Where else can you get such a family atmosphere — cross-stitching, clothes swapping, sit-down supper, and missing toothpaste? Where else do you see five hundred girls walking around at B:30 a.m. with raincoats on and carry flashlights and towels? Yes, we have a curfew, but where do the boys go when they want a saint — Peace of course. Where else can something happen at 1 1 :30 p.m. and everyone know about it by B: 1 5 the next morning? Peace College is definitely unique! What about dressing up every Wednesday for Chapel, even though the thought of putting on hose so early in the day drives you beserk? And how about that wonderful plan to sleep late on Thursday morning that always gets postponed by a beloved assembly. Remember that night you donned your white dress, solemnly climbed the stairs to the candle lit chapel, signed your name in white ink on a black book, and then broke out laughing Cmaybe from hysteria?] as you and your roommate recited the Honor Pledge? Yes, all this is Peace College. But Peace College is more. Peace is the teacher who stays after hours to go over and over the same calculus problem till you get it right. It is the smell of popcorn and Domino ' s pizza in the wee hours of the morning. Peace is holding hands and singing carols, and girls huddled around t.v. ' s at 3:GG to watch General Hospital. As everyone panicks. Peace is a wall-to-wall zoo during exams. Peace is red and white on Valentine ' s Day as the smell of huge masses of flowers invades Main lobby. Peace is multicolored swimsuits and the smell of suntan oil on broiling bodies in spring Cwould you believe, in March?! Peace is State red and Carolina blue and Peace green in sports seasons. Peace is the friend who mops tears and listens for hours to school problems and parent problems and boyfriend problems. It is a hand that reaches for help, a shoulder to lean on, a foundation to build on. Student life at Peace is unique. And as Peace girls we. too, are unique and special. your cvh in o(u n }s er I ' mB- dtxf ' tt exa ier ' oJ. or ' i  f te se ' fe-i- iiA.mu,jiiinimummju..i JW ' jjyimtJfmtU,IJUl,ii. fxul ( m hAeA Here it Is; the big day has finally arrived. GRADUATION! Wasn ' t it just yesterday when we were skittish freshmen with wide eyes and thudding hearts? Now we ' re graduating sopho- mores. We ' ve traded in our high school memony books for new memories and dreams. Now, instead of possessively clinging to a teddy bean, we clutch a beautiful bouquet of red roses. Graduation. This is the day that makes all the pop tests, late-times, room checks, and hall meetings worthwhile. Besides, freshman English wasn ' t too bad; and maybe, sonneday, know- ing the quadratic equation will come in handy. Maybe. And come to think of it, we won ' t feel quite the same without bells ringing at 2: GO a. mi. Now will we? Yes, everything has got to be perfect for this day. And it wouldn ' t rain. All oun moms are already teary-eyed, but all we can think about is whether our slips are long enough for our long A hite dresses. And all our dads are so proud of their little girls. And young brothers and sisters are squirming and wondering how long they will have to stay dressed up. We step out the door and through the majestic white colunnns of Main, armed with all the essentials — long white gloves, red noses, and watenpnoof mascana. We nememben to take tiny steps as we file anound the fountain, heels sinking into the soft tunf . A spnay of ned, like so many miemonies — chenished but put aside to make way fon new beginnings. The nefneshment line will be impossible, but what appeans mone impossible is leaving our safe hanbon called Peace College. But leave we will and we ' ll be all night because Peace has given us many gifts to take with us. And we won ' t fonget to come back. The noses will dny and fade, and the diploma will be shelved. But the bold white columns, the spankling gneen fountain, the faculty, and the family of Peace, a iII shine — long and clean — into the futune. CD m According to Homer ' s Odysaey, those who eat of the lotus plant are filled with a desire to remain where they are and continue ex- periencing its magic. The lotus is also an ancient symbol for fertility and divinity such as Lakshmi, the mother goddess of India. In Bud- dhism the lotus throne symbolizes purity and divine birth. Like the lotus, which gernninates under wa- ter and arises to the surface to unfold, so too the Buddha is born into the innpure world, but through his enlightenment, rises above it. And like the lotus, we have un- folded in the magic of Peace. 1 Si _J MMUPPpi nfll+ii - '
