How would I begin to find you? Would you want me as I wanted you? Would I be accepted as I am? Would any of the calls on the hall phone ever be for me? Would I go to lots of fraternity parties and dances, and know the chance thrill of dating some good-looking guy I ' d never, ever seen before? Would I meet that guy who had been pre-formed in my subconscious since I first saw Robert Redford in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid? Could I possibly come straight out of my high school and pass any test at Peace College? Would I be able to have a social life, and get my work done too? How would I be able to please my parents, my teachers, and myself all at once? When yesterday was tomorrow, I was faced with countless questions. ' 96 Peace College— I first met you on the chalk-dusty bookshelf of my guidance counsellor ' s office. Tucked away between inch-thick copies of the Record of the University of North Carolina at Ch apel Hill and Catalog of East Carolina University, you were intriguingly small and intimate even then. I had heard a lot about you; I wanted to know you better. MHii Peace College— You became my acquaintance one crisp October morning entitled Visitation, and as you introduced me to your President and Dean, I knew you would be unique and personable among all the rest. You had girls in your midst who smiled and said Hi! like I was one of their own. From the warmth of their smiles, I knew I wanted to be. Peace College— You became a part of me one sweaty, hot August morning— a morning too hot and frustrating to move luggage and climb stairs and say good-bye to Mama and Daddy with one last, brave kiss. I hope you missed that last kiss as I turned and ran back up to that barren, dusty room that I then had to call home, because the inevitable tears that fell from those eyes were not to be seen by you, or by Mama and Daddy, or by that awkward stranger who was going to be living with me: Not to be seen, but understood. man m i JHuitll tijBttia PJliilj liiiiiiiiiiisiiiiiiiiWiiiftBaBiMw In those hazy, confusing days, I never knew how important one measly letter could be. It was the vital link between the home I left and the home I was creating. Every letter was read and re-read until the inspiration and reassurance printed on those pages was faded and vague, but still remained a part of everyday ' s frustration, disappointment, and confusion. In the middle of that uproar, there was one haven of rest— one abstract reality to cling to: my faith and my hope. mgmm •m ilw ilL liH-iis jJUj i4i| ]il ii! jjj i Hiiiiia i I MliiikliJi)! ■JUiiiickiliifcEli HUli.l liii BSSH iiiiiiliiWiMiiiMMirasiiiiisiw 10 ■a MMiiili I ' ll never forget the knot of apprehension that settled in my stomach as I opened up my first blue book and began to recount the knowledge that culminated from long hours spent half- awake, half-asleep, but studying. Sometimes, after getting the blasted test back, I wondered if it would ever be worth it all. To escape, there was an endless stream of blind dates and nights at Darryl ' s and Hillsboro Square. But behind these stiff phrases, what does honor really mean? There are so many who have worked, and toiled, and gone unrecog- nized; but there are so many who have worked and been rewarded. Honor is the humbling sense of gratitude that makes you realize that you have been blessed. Honor is the satisfaction of being an achiever; it ' s the pleasure of knowing that faculty and administration feel you are worthy of praise. Honor is pride in the achievement, and a pat on the back for a job well done. Honor is reputation, and the courage to live up to that reputation. But most of all, honor is a sense of well-being and harmony— it ' s pride, and blessing, and humility and praise all rolled into one. 37 Who ' s Who In American Junior Colleges Miss Elaine Garner Miss Teresa Hicks Miss Treva Howell 38 M wmmm Miss Barbara Jones Miss Lynn Kendrick Miss Elizabeth McNair Miss Janet Powers Miss Paige Timberlake Miss Emily Wingo 39 L y uu ' -hJt ¥jmmmMmMi Outstanding Sophomores Miss Betty Bradley Miss Chrys Bullard Miss Teresa Hicks Miss Treva Howell mm ' Miss Sarah Gray Lamm ' ' Miss Elizabeth McNair Miss Emily Wingo ■±ui. ikSi ' fiin?£4 ' Frt-SwjJBiSi ' lH«lPiii«inw mmmmmmmmm. During this time, seven new buildings have been constructed; the existing campus buildings, Main and East, have been renovated; Dinwiddle Chapel has been remodeled; five tennis courts have been added; and a major portion of the campus has been land- scaped. Now, upon completion of the ten-year project, Peace College houses one of the most comfortable, serviceable physical plants around, and for a small, private college, this is quite an u 92 The Hermann Student Center is one of the busiest buildings around. On almost any day, you can find in it a fast-moving basketball game, a lot of slinky modern dancers, a roommate cooking a surprise birthday cake, a pool full of Peace Porpoises, and Ms. Finch, Ms. McCraw, and Mrs. Cochran. The Hermann Student Center, completed in 1963, is the generous gift of Mr. Grover M. Hermann, one of the country ' s leading industrialists. Directly behind the center is the athletic field which provides the students with space for softball, field hockey, archery, badminton, and (among other things) a powder puff football game. The Ragland Tennis Courts, also situated around the Hermann Stu- dent Center, set the stage for many Peace College tennis matches, and lots of springy tennisy evenings when everybody ' s ready to stretch ' .heir winter-worn muscles and feel some sun on their shoulders. 4 -4 Tmmmmmmmmmmmmg B mmmHagmBmimmmmm In 1964, the William C. Pressly Arts and Science Building replaced a huge, white house that had formerly been the center of art and science instruction at Peace. Pressly contains modern biology and chemistry labs, French and Spanish language labs, a home economics instruction complex, art labs, faculty offices, and nu- merous classrooms. Three years later, in 1967, Belk Hall was completed, and since then has become a center for laughter and companionship; there ' s no better way to enjoy a meal than with your friends. Belk also con- tains the private dining room, the student bookstore, a large lounging area, complete with TV and soap operas, and the post office— a vital link with Mama, Daddy, and the boy back home. 95 1 IL illi 1 s [iBnDDH miMi -fi -1 ' n I 1-. 96 With the addition of Finley and Ross, and the re- novation of Main and East, Peace College was able to house comfortably 400 girls ready for shaving cream fights and birthday parties. The plant could handle everything from dancing in the newly estab- lished Little Theatre, to meditation in Dinwiddle Chapel. Finally, with the completion of the Lucy Cooper Finch Library and the Browne-McPherson Music Building, the ten-year project had been fin- ished, and in the words of Mr. Gene Lilley, The dream of ' 62 had become a reality. But the impor- tance of the buildings at Peace College comes not from the brick or the stone, or from the ground they are built on, but from the warmth of the people they house, and from the learning experiences they facilitate. 97 ... If a college doesn ' t teach a man to think his own thoughts and speak his own mind, it doesn ' t teach him anything of prime importance. Oh, he may accumulate any amount of book-learning; he may be fluent in seventeen languages in- cluding the Etruscan; he may be able to square the circle But if he comes out of college without the capacity to form an opinion of the way the world is going, and the nerve to stand on that opinion in the face of stout opposition, he remains an ignoramus, though his degrees may take up half the letters of the alphabet. , % Gerald W. Johnson Wakes Forest College Class of 1911 99 100 911 With a student-faculty ratio of 19-1, learning became al- most a one-to-one correspondence. Many times I hurried down to the first floor of Main to catch one of my teachers before she left for the weekend, but there was always time for me— always time for my problem. At Peace I found that learning took place not only in the classroom, but on front campus, off campus, in lab, at Halifax Court, in small, infor- mal discussions. Learning became integrated into my daily life; it became vital and alive, not merely staid and factual. On my honor as a Peace College student, I will not lie, cheat or steal, nor will I condone the actions of those who do. I shall ever thank God that in that troubled hour of trial . . ., I had the courage to be true to my oath and conscience. Robert Taft Sometimes when I read this quote, I wonder if Robert Taft was left in a room by himself with his textbook and a test full of unanswered questions. When faced with that kind of temptation, you learn what your morals are made of. But the Honor Code acted as a kind of insurance against temptation. In it, I found sound faith, honesty, and trust-a sense of being able to trust my next door neighbor and my- self. Only with this kind of trust can you learn to like your- self and the people you live with. 103 I used to think that lab was dull and smelly, but lab be- came a unique learning experience. It was laughter over somebody ' s burned biscuits, somebody ' s dead Para- mecium, or somebody ' s shattered test tube. But most of all, it was trial and error— discovery in the truest sense. When I first walked into biology lab, I never knew I ' d learn anything that would be of use to me outside the classroom. But when Dr. Miller introduced me to bathtub beer and yogurt, biology suddenly found a place in my interests. Terrariums became growable and, believe me, my thumb was anything but green. Home Ec. lab and Mrs. Kincaid prepared me to take my place a mong the do- mestic world, and Dr. Purrington and the chemistry lab helped me to understand, in some small way, the make- up of my universe. Through guidance in paint- ing, ceramics, basket-weaving and lineoleum block printing each of us can develop a skill while having fun. After all, who has forgotten the satisfaction gained from squishing wet mud between your fingers or from creating an original masterpiece with your first paint box ' ' 106 Hi ' i -i  . i iaiti.ilgii ' gtfHgpgaiiiiBimafitgiiaBi jfliwoiiiMiw BmmimmmmmmmfimmFmwmmmmms . SjLm A popular student once said, At Peace College, they want to make sure you know how to do two things before you graduate: swim and read the Bible. As a result the physical education department at Peace believes that it ' s just as important to have a well-developed body as a well-developed mind, and they offer everything from archery to water-safety instruction. But, some mornings it was awfully hard to make myself put on my swimsuit and jump in the pool when it was 40° outside and 20° in the water. Nevertheless, exercise makes you feel better, and sometimes it can even make you look better. Any- way, after a semester in Ms. McCraw ' s physical fitness class, I didn ' t stumble over as many of the uneven bricks on front campus. 108 JS 109 D. H. Any course not offered at Peace can be taken at State, Meredith, St. Mary ' s, Shaw, or St. Augus- tine with no extra charge, and it transfers as if it were taken here. One special benefit of the Cooperating Raleigh Colleges Program is that it enables students to use libraries with a greater variety of holdings. On the outbreak of my first term paper, 1 panicked for a lack of resources, but the CRC program came to my rescue. My unfindable books suddenly appeared from the deep, dark depths of the book stacks in the D.H. Hill Library at NCSU. Occa- sionally the CRC program offers joint concerts, lectures, and pro- grams, and almost every semester, ten to thirty girls benefit from Peace ' s membership in the CRC program. Liberalism implies particularly freedom of thought, freedom from orthodox dogma, the right of others to think differently from one ' s self. It implies a free mind, open to new ideas and willing to give attentive con- sideration . . . When I say liberty, I mean lib- erty of thi ' inilixidual to think his own thoughts and live his his own lite as he de- sires to think and live. Robert A. Taft. Be free. Be whatever you ,ire. Do whatever you want to do, lust so long as you don ' t hurt anybody. And remember . . . am your friend. —From the Musical Hair -y v X Dr. S Ddvid Frazici Administration Dr. lames N. Come to think about it, I missed everybody on the hall! It just wasn ' t the same to walk outside and not see the same familiar faces-the same familiar smiles. In one short semes- ter 1 had grown so close to those people, it seemed as if they had been my friends since grade school. But there ' s one nice thing about the friends I made at Peace: they will be my friends for life, because in two short years, we packed more joy, more sorrow, more living into our friendship than most people have a chance to experience in a lifetime. Through all my tomorrows, there will never be any happier memories than those of my friends. .♦.M.t.t. . 127 Freshmen r i 8 Beth Alday Miriam Baily Kalhy |n Barker Kathryn Bell Betsy Allen Manina Ancherico Dana Archibald Harriet Armstrong Valerie Baines Nancy Baker Linda Barbieri Marcia Barham Gretchen Barnes Elizabeth Barnhardt Barbara Bauer Sharon Beasley Nancy Benton Emily Biggs Caren Bills Angie Birdwell Bonnie Bishop Gail Black Harriet Blackwelder Kitty Bone Lynn Bowen 128 lane Bowman Kathy Breedltive Debra Brewer Mdry )o Bridgeman Cindy Bridger Belh Brown |uiic Brown Mary Bryan Bettie Bryant Gwen Burke Amy Clontz Rhea Cohen Brenda Collier Jennifer Collins Joan Comer Betty Connette Emily Cooper Laura Craven Olivia Crawford Kaye Crews 129 Julia Crews Dunna Crute Kathryn Davis |oy Dees Janet Desko Kathv Dew Yvonnp DirJcerson Julia Dixon Jean Dowel! Blanche St. Clayton 27520 Yezierski, Lynette 3049-E Timberlake Dr. Raleigh VMMt ]ikjUl r In 1973, two years seemed like such a long time; but as our days here Peace grow fewer and fewer, it seems only yesterday that we suffered through orientation, handbook tests, and beanies. It is our hope that through the Lotus, we have been able not only to record events that have made this year, but to record the emotions and vitality that were the moment. No great project can be done alone, so we wish to extend a special thanks to the Lotus staff, Fred Jones, who took pictures endlessly, Kittie McGee. Janice Powers, and Brenda Bullock, who spent extra hours in the publi- cations room helping us to meet dt adlines, to the teachers in Main who always had encouraging and cheerful words to say, especially to Mrs. Janet We.ster, who gave us time, guidance, and encouragement, and under- standing, and finally to the student body of Peace College without whom there would have been nothing to record or to remember. So, it is with a great deal of pride and relief that we present the 1975 Lotus to you in hopes that it will enable you to happily remember your years at Peace College. Co-Editor Lotus 1975 Chrys Bullard and Barbara Jones Our Dedication To . . . itm ' Mr. Paul Johnson iB!Sa lllLa!SaiEiK Everyone needs a man at some time in her life, but from Monday to Thursday, Peace College seems almost a man-forsaken place, except for a few of this rare species who regularly roam the halls and grounds. But there is one man who never goes unnoticed; a man who has touched the hearts and minds of thousands of girls over the years. He is a special friend to all of us in his own special way; in an environment without Daddies, he is the Daddy of us all, because his strong, quiet exuberance and optimism make a hard day easier, and a happy day happier. He does some of the hardest, most thankless jobs on campus; replacing light bulbs, fixing door knobs, adjusting window screens, and keeping us warm, and he takes very good care of us. So, by dedicating the 1975 Lo(us to him— with the utmost appreciation and a great, great deal of love— the Sophomore Class wants to thank Mr. Paul Johnson for his unfailing love for us, and his unfailing love for life. 159 DURFEY-HOOVER INSURANCE AGENCY Paul A.
