Business Manager In presenting this, The LOTUS of 1938, we have tried to please you and give you something which will recall the memories of your years at Peace, the things you have done, and the friends you have made. We hope that we have been successful and that you may find much pleasure from glancing through these pages in the years to come. I wish at this time to thank all those whose interest and cooperation have made this publication possible. Dr. Pressly ' s patience in explaining details to a green editor and Mrs. Worth ' s advice and help have made the task of the staff much lighter. June Dickson, our assistant editor, has been wonderful about doing cheerfully and well odd jobs asked of her. To Janice Cobb, the seniors owe bJfh gratitude and apprecia- tion for the splendid material which she has piepa..- ' lOr their section. The fine spirit of our associate editors, Deede Bisceglia, Lioby Jenkins, and Helen Clark have been a source of joy and inspiration to the wl -jle staff. The snapshots in this volume are the results of the work prepared b; our capable snap editors: Sarah McLean and Barbara Bloxam. Peggy Stixrud has proved a valuable aid in editing the athletic section and to Emily Siler, our joke editor, we are in- debted for the humor in this magazine. A word of thanks is also due to Betsy Graham wl ose interest and helpful contributions have been a constant encouragement to the editor. But the efforts of all the editorial staff would have been useless without the backing of our advertising staff who have done an admirable piece of work under the efficient managemeiit of Amelia Farrior, Blanche Harrison, and Miss Kirkpatrick. It has been both a privilege and a pleasure to edit this book for you and we hope you will like it. This past fall several skits and light comedies were given and a tragedy was successfully produced by the advanced students; these productions were re- ceived with a great deal of pleasure and interest on the part of the student body. In the spring emphasis was placed upon speech correction and voice pro- duction and a comprehensive study was made of plot construction and modern plays. Special work has been done on the One Act Play, the Monologue, and Character Make-up. Three teams were organized: Senior, Junior Academic, and Prep and Commercials. The strength and team work of all the teams were remarkable as hard fought games in the tournament proved. Tennis occupies an important place in the Peace Girl ' s leisure time. The tournaments were played off in the spring term alter tennis lessons had been given in gym classes during the fall. We have many promising players. Archery is another new sport that is being enjoyed by the girls this year. Quite a number have their own equipment. This sport is becoming increasingly popular. Hiking has been highly organized, for the girls have opportunities to go hik- ing every day. The school has four bicycles so that those girls who enjoy bicycling may ride whenever they like. Soccer and baseball were played during the winter and spring, respectively, and the girls seemed to enjoy them immensely. Horseback riding has proved a very popular addition to the Peace athletic activities this year. Mrs. Darsie takes three groups a week out to Carolina Pines where they may ride through the woods or take lessons in the ring. 75 If 3f THE LOTUS OF 1 93 Monogram gals!
