MRS. RUTH HUNTINGTON MOORE Born m New York City, March 30, 1866 Died m Rdleigh, N. C, June 27, 1936 A gifted artist, a lover of all things beautiful, a unique per- sonality which combined a background of broad culture with wide intellectual interests, a rare sense of humor, an exceptional originality, a ready sympathy and a lavish generosity Mrs. Moore was a dominant figure in the life of Peace for twenty- seven years. Mrs Moore achieved unusual recognition and success in her work. She exhibited in the Grand Salon des artistes Francaises a wonderful picture which now hangs in our President s oltice While here, she painted many notable portraits; her latest, the Earl of Craven. We were proud of Mrs. Moore; we admired her greatly. We loved her dearly for her generous character and her love for nature. Her favorite hobby was her flower garden, and there she spent many pleasant hours happily engaged in caring for her flowers. Often she would call to some one of us to see how well the new roses were growing, or to see a lovely ins that she had been afraid would not ' Ave. It was fun to share her interests and enthusiasm in flowers. We hope that the studio garden will always be a beautiful livmg remembrance of Mrs. Moore. 1866-1936 OUR THEME In presenting this, the Lotus of 1937, we have endeavored to exemphfy, with Current Magazines, our Ufe at Peace. I came across the little trunk I had at Peace, twenty-odd vears agro. In a flash it hrought hack sc many pleastnt memories that I could not resist the impulse to lift the lid. My! What confusion! It was nearlv as bad as mv top bureau drawer used to be -when I was at Peace. Tlie first thin I came acrnss was my old Economics book. This immediately reminded me of Fanny and how she used to be so concerned over the characteristics of bis business. And now she ' s the head of a bis; business herself. And then I found one of alarcie FoUey ' s drawings done on English class — now she illustrates for nil the best known magazines. That reminds me of Elizabeth Slater — she ' s that great artist over wh m Paris is so enthusiastic at present. The next thin? I cam.- across was a program for one of our school plays. I remember Louise Bashford ' s name distinctly because she is now playing in one of the larger productions on Broadway. And on another program I found Mary Kerr Motz ' s name. I heard her sing over tl;p radio the other d«v. I think she ' s with Nancy Lycn ' s Orchestra. T hear that Margaret Candler is Nancy ' s pianist. They were all three destined to become famous musicians. I can ' t imaaine why on esirth I saved that biologv exam, but ther- ' it was. As hard as that was. Lillian Lee and Maiy Helen Watkins always managed to stay on lop — now they ' ve just discovered a new formula for treating rusts on plants. Speaking of smart people — Frankip Xorthcott and Lula Davis were just about the smartest. After they finished at Peace they went on to Culumhia. and now they are both professors there. Dusk was falling so I closed my little trunk with all its memories. T went downstairs and found the BagwFll JlernUl awaiting me on the porch. My recent recollection ' : mnrle me take more interest in the name of the paper. After a close look T found ilin ' i m- ' Ti ' il li-)i. ' ! t-v J. -irri ' ttf Ri ' _ ' cn, the editor of our old Peace Annual. On the first page I nnt ■ I -l - M-- I li.. .,- -n, niuj donations for the upkeep of her Asylum for the Oi-phans m I ■ i , , , ,. . _ . nut:), donations, because it is such n worthy cause. On the saiin : _ I ! ■ i. l. : ( ■ i- j coming to town next week. It seems that the main featiic- !■ ;-ji.i,_ ' n; , ' I ' Il-rrins and the Fat Lady, who in real life is Mary Leona Ruffin. It - so - tnin-e hi.w life will tr.at i.cr.ple. I must re- member to see the circus. On the next page I found an editorial by Miss AVillena Smith on The Evils of Smoking. Another change which life hath wrought — T wonder if .she was ever married. She was such an affectionate soul. On the same page T read a column on Advice to the Lovelorn bv Nancv Jones and Dora Bostick. They really did possess literary genius when they were at Peace and have carried it throu-h life, it The next page held in store for me a delightful surprise. On it were the entertainments for the next week, to be offered at the theatres, and among the others was a picture of mv old friend Frances Reins. She was to be co-starred in the picture These Two Blondes with Elizabeth Smith. We used to re- member Frances by her red hair, but it seems that it is now blond. They both are getting quite old for such performances, but they still pr sess the art of holding their audience. On that page was also the announcement that lai-v Ruth Moore — now Mrs. Rudolphskv — would give an organ recital on next Thursday. I must remember that also. On the Societv pase I found that the former Miss Edith Wyatt was entertaining the new preacher ' s wife, the former : lis-. Lcttv Osborne, at an informal tea. Here. too. I saw that Miss Ann Dees and Miss . ' .i , Ciil,,,: ,,.. joint hostesses at a meeting of the Old Maids Sewing Circle. I was quite surpri-.t ,■ , ' . ,,u e they always talked like they had so many suitors. Strange how time will tell. Ati. I _ li ' nnncements of engagements on that page I found one saying that Miss Marv Gwyn W 111, III,- ivi.i divorced, is to marry the King of Sweden. It ' s a pitj- that she can ' t seem to get al..j,_- wifU ,u.v of her husbands. This one will prohablv be a failure too. because she is ten vears older than he. The next pase, being the sport pase. featured the tennis match betwe Miss Dorothy Thurman. and Miss Eleanor Benson. Eleanor won by old to be playing tennis, hut evidently they still have the necessary en cf the chess battle between the former Berry McArthur and Miss Miriam Doub. I don ' t think they gained that ability at Peace. On the comic page I found that there was a fine strip by A. Harrison, featuring a hero with a black mustache. I wonder if that could be Alice. She certainly was a fine girl. There was another bv Anne Marie JetFerson. On the last page was a large advertisement of Sugg ' s Wholesale Grocery. She got her start at Peace, I ' m sure. Miss Dee Batehelor. who. I was told, became Dean of Peace after being twice disap- pointed in love, had published on the same pase a list of the new rules that Peace students have to follow. They are very much the same as those we had to comply with when I was there, except that the school seems to be a little more lenient about visiting during closed study hour. That was all the paper and my reverie was again interrupted. I then had to prepare my dinner. I wondered if Mary Catherine ever learned to cook for that good-looking husband of hers. I feel sure that Clara (better known as Red, ) never did. Poor Bob — I ' ll bet he hasn ' t had a decent meal since they were married. Ml bet Mary Council leads her husband a merry chase by arguing with him all the time — just as she did at Peace. Well, Diarv, that ' s all for todav. This certainlv has been a day of reminiscing. It ' s strange that I should run across so many old Peace girls in one day. Iris Kei.i.y. The assistant editor, Mary I.eona UulKn has been willing at all times to assist in comiiiling this book. Not only has she typed and beljied to edit material, but ilas also written many articles. The efficiene of our associatJ editors, Kllen Munrue. I ' iotm- .Sinilh. .laniee Cohh, and H.i,-hrl farr.iwax, have encouraged all tlie other inernliers to work harder to achieve our imrpose. The seniors are in- ilebted to Marcella FoUey for the collection of their achievements and their distinguish- able characteristics. Mary Gwyn Williams has been seen frequently on the campus with her camera, and the results are to be seen in this book.
