Do you remember the day we left for Christmas vacation? As we left many of us said, Goodsbje, Mrs. Kenney. And Merry Christmas! In her own delightful way she too wished us a Merry Christmas — and goodsbye. Many of us sent greeting cards — a last remembrance. When school reopened, one of tis did not return — Mrs. Kenney. And yet — in every corner is a memory of that loved one. At her table we miss the thumbsdup signal when the meal is finished. In the hall we miss the words All aboard! as she stepped into the elevator for a trip upstairs. Many a time a play or pageant would have been Jess complete without her gracious lending. We shall miss the interest taken in our persona] friends. Many of vi s had some little secret we would share with her alone. We shall miss helping her into the little red car for the ride she loved so well. It is the little things in life that make us love a person. When the loved one is gone, those little things are what we remember. We miss Mrs. Kenney not only as the alumnae secretary and as a gracious lady, but also as a friend and one of us. 16 X ' ' XXXXX XXX , .« ■' s ' S 5 xxxx _ VxxxxxixjOtS xx XXX XXXXXXXXXXXX XX - xxxxxxxxx ;ocxxxx)ao xxxxkxxxxxx N5x SssJxH 5o XXXXXXXXXXXXXX v x v v xx OOOQO XXXXXXXXXXXXW v XXXXXXXXXXXX :xxxx9vy xxxxxx xV3Qy X- v - ■XSXXXXXXXXXXXX ' ' S «X XX XXXXXXXXXXXKXXXKXXVXXXXX ' ' - XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXKXXXXXJ XKKXXX • -x « XXXXXXKXXMV ' - -■- - -- 8K ' S8558S ' S?P ?5SE W ' ' ' ' ' ' ' xxxJrxxxxx j XyxxXXXyX)OfXXXX)O0?X) XXXXXXXXXX XxSoO(X - -,. C. n©. r 36 LOTUS ENIOE CLASS HISTOMY (With Apologies to Chaucer) Mien vvariii September, bearing fruitage sweet, The summer ' s end had gaily rushed to meet. Then youth must make a lengthy pilgrimage, Hearts brave and steadfast holding staunch courage. And specially from everv county ' s end. From mountain and from ocean they did wend The blissful shrine of wisdom for to seek — Some strong, and sooth to sa) ' . some woeful weak. Befel upon a clear, crisp autumn day At this fair, goodly school they made delay. To pray for guidance on their loft) ' quest For knowledge, filled with eager hope and zest. There came to this serene vicinity Full five and sixty in a company Of sundry maidens, who by chance did fall In happy fellowship, Peace lovers all. The chambers and the corridors were wide, With rich and lavish furnishings inside. And well we all were comforted at best. And shortly, ere the group had gone to rest. To each we spoke, and each we gazed upon. So that we were of fellowship anon. The manner shall be told you without fail; For thus proceedeth the historian ' s tale: Leaders we chose; more worthy were there none. Who from the time wdien they had first begun To counsel us, loved gentle chivalry, Truth and honor, learning and courtesy. First, stately Glenn; to uphold her and to aid Came Stella fair, sedate and winsome maid. The next 3 ' ear of our Lord we chose anew — The charming Peg and lively Robbie Sue. A learned clerk was there, as you shall hear. Whose minutes and whose records were held dear; Her parchments and her pens alwaj ' s at hand. Full ready was this maid to take command: The best of all the scribes in Raleigh town Was chosen twice, Papyrian Edith Brown. And for each year a worthy treasurer — Small gold had each of them in her coffer — But all that they could of their book-mates get They spent on annuals and many an ancient debt. The performers of this task for our brief stay Were Jones and Hunt, best bankers of the day. .And scholars had we, brilliant in array; Full ninety and above their average lay; Sagely they spoke, with long and lucid speech. And gladly would thev learn, and gladly teach. Divided were we in our company By two great guilds of ancient ri alry. Are not their names familiar to you. ' Sigma Phi Kappa, and Pi Theta Mu. And sundry sports had we of lively kind To please the eye and freshen up the mind. And also these did shorten much our way: The sumptuous feasts, the yearly famous pla ' By Pi and Sig, and never would they rest Till each had spoken well, and staged her best. Now I have told you briefly, in a clause, Our destination, number, and our cause, And I beseech you to forgive it me If I liave not set folk in their degree Here in this story as they all should stand. Aly wit is short, ye well can understand. (Here endeth the historian ' s tale.) Shirley Ann Whitlock. 37 LOTUS E N I O R CLASS P R O P H E C During the decade since I left Peace, I ' ve worked to perfect a flving steed. Since he is finished and my labors cease. I ' ll mount him at once and with great speed I ' ll leave this land on a journey to go, To see what the Peace girls now achieve. Having dubbed ni}- horse good Autogiro, I pack my saddlebags and leave. .As it ' s lonesome flying v lth no birds near. I proceed to turn on the radio To be found in Autogiro ' s right ear. The voice is familiar; the program, I know, Is the hour for Farm and Home advice Which Meredith Holderby sagely will state: Our Pi executive, calm and precise. Now tells the farmer to hoe the row straight. The program ended, I turn the dial; The police department makes a repurl: A criminal ' s caught and broui ht to trial (Our G-woman Willard sent the man to court). At this, Autogiro switches his tail; He leSps o ' er a cloud and bucks in the air. I know this sign can never fail; A screw is bound to be loose somewhere. . parachute grabbing from the saddlebai;, I place Autogiro under my arm; I feel myself hitting earth with niv nag. And see an old friend looking on in alarm. To my joy it is Holmes, with her fine husband And three small children standing around; Her farm, she declares, is the best in the land, . ' nd her children the sm artest that can be found. She says she is going to town to the show, For the two comedians. Peg and Kit, Are now so famous that all folks go To hear and laugh at their Tar Heel wit. Holmes packs my horse and me in her car, And while riding along we talk of old davs. Dear Crookie will make herself known afar— Our Jamaican with the warm-natured ways; In helping Doolittle ' s experiments out. She will let herself be frozen and thawed— A cure for all ailments without a doubt. Her fortitude we all applaud. E. Brown, a psychologist of renown, Studies the Dionnes ' daily advancing. While Freres makes good in the capital town By handling sums and the country ' s financing. Kat Denton writes for the Read Atc-hiU Daily A section on school life called ' Goin ' to Peace ' s. Her latest column makes us laugh quite gailv , For she now tells how trouble in Wreckall ceases When friend Ruth Goodman becomes traffic cop. Holmes adds that Mabel is now calling figures For the big square dances at Johnson ' s Hop, White music by Tiny ' s string band allures The peoole to gather from city and farm. We gaze now from the windows upon the crowd That has come to witness the Peg ' -Kit charm, But above the noise there ' s a shout very loud; Extra! Extra! calls the nimble newsboy. Whitlock makes a car that will burn pure air! Shirley Ann has invented a thing we ' ll enjoy. The show begins with ' A ' anity Fair And the first to appear is Cathryn Byers. The famous musician who for pastime Paints signs advertising the Smooth Floating Tires. 1 ' he next of our class is Stella sublime. Who is running now a puppet show And lets all good folks come In free. As for Bill and Meta, ten years ago They would not leave town, but did agree To buy Little Drug and make the dopes I ' or the Peace girls when they flocked around. Thus ends the feature, but I regain hopes When the musicale starts with the familiar sound Of melodies onlv our Margie can make. The Valve-Pushing Trio, Skeeter. Bet. and Rob ' Sue, Are known abroad from the prizes they take; The Peg-and-Kit show Is too good to be true. But all good things must sometimes end, And I must hurry along my way; For I have poor Autogiro to mend. . s I approach, he begins to neigh, Calling attention to his feeble plight. I ' ll fix the screw, I hear one cry, . nd mechanic Gerber pulls Into sight. When my steed is mended, I ' m ready to fly; So Gerber climbs up and rides with me. We wave to Holmes a fond adieu, And start floating high o ' er hill and lea. While sailing along we talk of the crew. Mary Kellam and Jep are teaching school, And among the married are Duny and Pat. Now Gerber looks down and points to a pool And tells me to land In order to chat With Billie Pope, the liehthouse keeper, Who sends out the beams that sailors wish; And where the water runneth deeper Our Jinny Turner raises fish. When I push the peg for the nag to descend, He jumps straight forward and starts going up. Gerber. I call, which screw did you mend? She answers, I made a longer cup For the one that fits the altitude brain. Woman, I cry, we ' ll never come down. To push anv peg would now be in vain! When I look below I can ' t see the town; The world Is a ball going round and round. Before ven.- long we pass the moon And I feel a dizziness profound. Suddenly the nag seems about to swoon As he rotates in a peculiar way. I know we have come to Mars ' orbit. Just how it happens, I now can ' t sav, But in the middle of Mars we sit, And to my surprise in a palace yard; For a queen ' s rushing forth this sight to see. Welcome, she greets, to my kingdom unmarred By evils that upset your land ' s history. We bat our eyes and we look again; Our surprise is so great, and so great our mirth At Miss Davidson ' s ruling this domain That we and Giro fall back to earth- So here I am, all safe and sound. Not a bit the worse for goine around. Ruth Wlrb. 38 LOTUS SENIOM POEM Weaving, weaving all year long An intricate pattern of multiple threads, High hopes, sweet dreams of a joyous throng We have worked in rich colors of blues and reds. Warm glints of laughter in golden bliss As sunbeams through a lattice stray. And beauty and wit and all happiness Are clustered together in charming arra} ' . The will to do and the courage to dare. These shine forth in youth ' s design; And each eager hand has done its share Its own bright thread through the rest to twine. And now that our sampler of Peace is done We are gay and glad, and yet we would fain, In spite of our pride at praises won. Unravel the threads and start over again. Frances Priscilla Baker. 39 . . .
