SUNDAY, MARCH 1, 1912 Whole Numbbk OOOO SPRING TERM HOLIDAYS DEAD JUDGE HENRY JEROME STOCKARD DECLARES HOLIDAYS LAST APRIL KILLED THE PEACE GIRLS ' MINDS AND DEMORALIZED THE INSTITUTION HOLIDAY ' S LAST WORDS : TELL THEM I ' M SOKRY Raleigh, N. C. — Spring Term Holiday sentenced to death to day by Judge Henry Jerome Stockard; and Governor Young in a statement issued to-night says he will justify and maintain his determination that Holiday is not -worthy of a pardon, and that this state- ment is his farewell word in the case. unless the higher courts set aside his writ of habeas corpus. The Judge de- clares he has no regret for his action, and offers no excuse. Moral as well as legal considerations, he says, influenced his decision. Referring to the statement of Holi- day and his attorney, J. P. Brawley. that no attempt was made to kill the minds of the Peace girls and demoralize the school, but merely an effort to give them a rest and prepare them for better work, the Judge replied, In re- gard to this particular feature of the case there remains only to say that the girls ' minds wer e completely destroyed, so that there was no more work accom- plished during the Spring and the repu- tation of Peace was shaken. In the exercise of executive discre- tion, it is as much my duty to protect the fair name of Peace and the minds of the girls who have never had an opportunity to defend that which is dearer than love and liberty, as to pro- tect the much wanted legal rights of one who has been convicted of a crime upon his own plea of guilt. I refuse through the exercise of justice and reason to condone a wrong more des- picable and insidious than burglary or assault — blasting the reputation of Peace, on the unsupported declaration of wanting to give the girls a rest, in or- der to enable them to do better work! Holiday ' s death sentence was read to him yesterday morning. He took it bravely, and was electrocuted at twelve o ' clock last night in the presence of all the Peace jurymen. His last words were, Tell the Peace girls that I ' m sor- ry. No one was permitted to be pres- ent at the funeral, but the Peace girls were allowed to send a handsome floral design to be placed on the last resting place of Holiday. FAMINE AT PEACE One of the most commendable, pathet- ical and distressing incidents that has ever occurred in America is the famine at Peace Institute. Never in the history of the country has anything been so sad as the condition of the ill-fed school girls at the institution. The starving time in the early Virginia and North Carolina settlements can not even be com- pared with the conditions now at Peace. The recent famine in China is the only famine in the history of the world that can be compared with that one which is now raging. While there are not so many sufferers at Peace as there are in China, those who are suffering are in a more deplorable state. It is dis- tressing, to say the least, to watch those poor, lean, and hungry school girls as they go about their daily occupations. It is an outrage, and a shame and dis- grace, for anj ' thing like this to hap- pen in a civilized, modem, Christian na- tion. Such things are to a certain ex- tent excusable in a backward nation like China, but to have such a thing happen in a nation that we are all proud of is the limit, and is inexcusable, as Peace Institute is situated in the large, pro- gressive, wide-awake, City of Raleigh, where plenty and abundance abound. The people of North Carolina and the whole United States should rise up in arms and force the authorities to give the school girls enough to eat. Affairs are in a most deplorable state. Eighty-five young girls were once, before they ar- rived at Peace, strong, healthy, pretty, girls, and came from the best families of North Carolina and the near-by states. It is an outrage to womanhood! And unless the men take some active part in the matter it is feared that all the women of North Carolina will become suffragettes, demand the right to vote, and overthrow the Government. This would be terrible, but it will be done if there is delay, for the women of North Carolina are not back vard, and will not hesitate to do anything when their once fresh and pretty young daughters are on the verge of starvation. The people will not delay and al- ready there is in circulation a petition for food from different states. The Red Cross Society will be appealed to. Later. The girls of Peace Institute have re- volted because they are required and forced to continue their work without being fed. The management which has been in control ever since the found- ing of the old historic institution in the seventeenth century, has been forced to resign. New and competent managers are now in control ; food has arrived from all parts of the globe, and it is safe to predict that the Peace girls will be well fed for a little while anyway. The girls will no longer trip up the maids who are passing by the center table, in order to catch a hot biscuit: hot mufEins and rolls will no longer be used as money and bribes; potatoes, cow peas and corn bread will be more plentiful. The contents of the hash and soup will cease to be questionable. Pure cow milk will be used hereafter. The crust of mince-meat pies will not be so hard and tough, and will be used only once. On the whole, the food will be substan- tial, well prepared and plentiful; and the girls will not have to deny them- selves when visitors are present. So, many can be filled at any time, and a period of prosperity, cooperation and happiness will reign. NOTICE BRAINS SELL DON ' T RUSH— DON ' T CROWD PLENTY- RESERVE M. Brown ' s Feat in Perilous Trouble — Yet Not a Cloud Upon Her Brow Room 34, Peace Institute. — Pool Crocker committed an unpardonable sin yosterday when they said that a iium- I)er one Colonial boot would look neater on Susie Brown ' s foot than a number four; for Susie was anxious to keep up in fashion and decided, though flie clerk failed in his efforts, she could pull the boots upon her feet. After tak- ing them home, before she attempted to draw them on, she rubbed the inside with soap, and powdered her heel T,vith flour. She next thrusts the handles of Iwo forks into the back of the boots, lest she cut her fingers, and then com- menced the tug of war, She contract- ed herself into the form of a chicken trussed for the spit, and whatever pa- tience and perseverance Providence had given her she tested to the utmost. She cursed Pool Crocker for a Scythian, and wished that their boots were hung in their straps. Then, after many times, and after several intervals for respira- tion and pious ejaculations, she suc- ceeded in getting her toes into trouble, or, I may say, purgatory Corns had she, as many as the most fanatic pil- grim would desire for peas in his shoes; yet she was a patient soul and walked through the crowd as if she were a carpet-knight capering iipon rose-leaves, and, although she was in torment, there was not a cloud upon her brow. PROMINENT SOCIETY COUPLE UNITED IN MARRIAGE Heart-Rending Scene at the Altar — Bride-to-Be in Critical Condition — Groom Breaks Down and Sobs; Former Deeds Brought to Light — Sympathy Poured Forth on All Sides Last Wednesday evening at 8 o ' clock one of the largest crowds ever assembled came to witness the marriage ceremony of two of our most favorite young peo- ple in Popular Hall. Miss Hattie Louise Hackney and Mr. L. R. Nicholson. The ceremony was presided over by the Rev. M. R. Johnson, a life-long friend and adviser of the young couple. The chapel was tastefully decorated by Miss Helen Julian, a well known artist of renowned fame, who staged Madame Butterfly. The color scheme was green and white, which was carried out to perfection by the lovely orchids and palms. The cere- mony began promptly at 8 o ' clock. A silence fell upon the audience as the dainty little flower girls, Misses Mar- garet Jennings, Ethel Miller, Jean Ward and Louise Beeson, attired in white lin- gerie dresses, green sashes and hair rib- bons, made their entrance. They were followed by Miss Montgomery and Mr. Walser, Miss D ' Berry and Mr. Winston, Miss Thacker and Mr. Tillar, Miss Til- ly and Mr. McNeely. Next came the dj.rae of honor, Mrs. Elizabeth Howard Johnston, attired in white satin draped with crystal net and jewels, carrying an immense bouquet of Wilmington pal- ma violets. Last came the bride, lean- ing gracefully on the arm of the maid of honor. Miss Lucile Best, of London, England. The bride was gowned in one of Worth ' s most marvelous creations. The simplicity of the handsome gown brought out her rare beauty. The sub- lime expression on her face showed wherein true contentment lay. The maid of honor was gracefully attired in a clinging gown of white crepe de chine, trimmed with real lace and pearls. This gown was formerly worn at the inaug- ural ball in England. The charming little train-bearer, Miss Gladys Mitchell, was daintily clad in green chiffon. The groom entered from the side door on the arm of his best man, Mr. R. Mitchell, meeting the bride at the altar. The ceremony con- tinued uninterrupted until the words, If any man know ought against this man or woman, why they should not be wed, let him speak now or henceforth hold his peace. The supreme silence was broken by a loud noise in the rear of the chapel caused by the breaking- down of the front door. Every one turned breathless to behold Miss Julia Burton, a former attachment of the groom, who rushed up the aisle, threw her arras around the groom and fell in a dead faint. Physicians were called imme- diately, and well it was, for just at that moment the bride w ith dilated eyes, death-like pallor covering her face, fell into the arms of the best man. The clanging of the bell of the ambulance was heard at a distance. The suspense was terrible; women and children screamed; even the stronger sex sobbed; such a pathetic spectra! had never before been witnessed by any present. The groom, assisted by his friends, was hurried from the heart-breaking scene. So far, no news concerning the condition of either the bride-to-be or Miss Burton has been secured. The excited crowd rushed from the chapel with tears and sobs. Eurthed details in next issue, concern- ing important outcome. SOCIETY PEACE RECEPTION The Biggest Hit of the Season — Un- selfishness Prevailed Everywhere On Monday evening, March first, the Peace girls and all others connected with the institution received. Although it was a very disagreeable night, every one invited, knowing what was in store for them, accepted the invitation. In spite of the fact that it was dark, gloomy and stormy out of doors, arriv- ing at the door all the guests felt them- selves transformed and transferred into another world. All was bright, cheery and joyous within. The A. M. boys were the only ones who were fortunate enough to be invited ; and, needless to say, they felt highly honored, for the receptions at Peace In- stitute surpass everything in the social line in the State; and these are looked fonvard to with much pleasure from year to year. For the social events at this old, historic and magnificent institution are decidedly the most brilliant that are given in the old North State. The President and Lady Principal of the institution received the guests at the door and presented them to the receiv- ing line, which was composed of the board of directors, the faculty, the board of deacons and elders of the Presbyterian church, with girls sprinkled in between. The genial President, with the faculty looked after the welfare of the guests and girls. Unselfishness prevailed every- wliere. On every hand a young, willing and attractive member of the faculty was ready to help the timid, and, in fact, all of the girls, to take good advantage of their colloquial talents. Their efforts AMUSEMENTS ATTRACTIONS AT THE ACADEMY Among the coming attractions at the Academy of Music will be Viola Allen in the ' ' Herford ' s, which is being looked forward to with as much pleasure as the Spring Maid was last week — and which was attended by all of theatre-go- ing Raleigh. On this occasion the repre- sentation from Peace was especially no- ticeable; the students were there in full number, being chaperoned by Mr. Stock- ard and the Lady Principal, who seemed to take keen pleasure in the girls ' en- joyment of the truly great play, etc. were instrumental in giving much pleas- ure to the guests. The first part of the reception was very formal, but later it was turned into an informal affair, card-playing and dancing being special features of the evening. In the game of bridge-whist much excitement prevailed, as a coveted prize was to be presented at the ending of the game. And it was found that the President and Miss Rose A. Wallace had won. The President gracefully pre- sented the prize, which was a large keg of fine old Medeira, to Miss Wallace, who in turn presented it to the Presi- dent of the student body of A. . M.; and he dispensed it liberally among his fellow students and the hostess. Following the game of cards, at mid- night supper was served, after which the guests repaired to the handsome ball- room and danced until sunrise. The gemian was led by the President and the Lady Principal. Many new dances were introduced into Peace on this mem- orable night, among them being the Vir- ginia Reel, the Cake Walk, the Waltz, the Two-Step, the Turkey Trot, the Griz- zly Bear, the Boston Dip, the Raleigh Hop, the Saratoga Slide and African Glide. An entirely new dance was also first introduced in America at this time, and proved to be a novelty and very inter- esting. In this three people danced to- gether instead of two, which satisfied the finer senses of propriety, as well as be- ing attractive, for it was not expedient for the young students of timid natures and tender years to dance with boys unchaperoned. In this dance each A. M. boy and Peace girl were chaperoned by either a member of the faculty or one of the directors. This last dance was the ' hit of the evening, and, as it was first introduced at Peace, it is safe to predict that it will become the most pop- ular dance in America. As the sun began to throw his shin- ing rays on dark Mother Earth, the guests departed, after having thoroughly enjoyed every moment they spent at Peace. BUCK TIP! I out u ye LOOK T thS AMONG THE SPORTS What is ShoM n by the Statistics of Peace Athletic Pastime That the Peace girls, in baseball as well as in baeket-ball, are the real Swatters is shown by the statistics of the games. Here are a few pewee schools, such as A. and M.; U. N. C. and Trinity, who have made records; but the great majority of .003 Hitters are the husky Peace girls. TENNIS TOURNAMENT The most exciting feature of Uie athletic season was pulled off yester- day at the final game of the Tennis Tournament, when Irvin Koyster and Helen Julian, representing the Freshman Class, completely overwhelmed, with unparalleled skill and agility of playing, Sara Williams and Alice Lashley, — stars of the Senior Class. The Tennis Recorder declares it to have been the roost thrilling and beautifully played game he has ever witnessed — and such was the universal opinion of all the spectators, as they watched, in breath- less suspense, ' every little movement. When the game was first begun, the tide of victory seemed to bear on its back the Seniors, whose serves, unmatched for swiftness, absolutely could not be got on to. Fifteen-love, thirty-love, forty-love! — rang out the voice of the umpire — then tlie first game was the Seniors! Undaunted, the Freshmen put all their powers into the struggle, and in the second game the scores kept fairly even, soon reaching deuce — what was the issue to be? At this critical point, Miss Royster came to the front, and displayed such powers as have never before been seen on the courts of Peace, bringing glory forever on the name of the Class of 1915. A few more minutes, and the score was deuce in the third game, when, alas! at this juncture, the dews of Heaven descended in the form of rain, and in great tribulation the rival players retired under umbrellas ' midst the en- thusiastic cheers of their upholders. PEACE BASEBALL Arrangements bad been made throu captain, coach, president and so on, past all the dignitaries of whom it is neces- sary for girls at a girls school to obtain permission. And now the Peace team was to prove that they were the equals of X College so far as baseball was concerned. Could they do it? All precautions had been taken to impress the visitors with the importance of Peace. Special seats had been con- structed on the ' field, green and white pennants had been bought, begged, and borrowed from every conceivable source, and finally Rex, Mr. Bunch ' s faithful canine follower, had been gaily decorated with green and white ribbons and pressed into service as mascot. As the hour for the game drew near, the crowds assembled, the green at the right, the crimson at the left, each try- ing to outdo the other by the cheers sent up in shrill girlish tones — and the game began. The crowd pushed closer to the ropes. Rex, eager, alert, watched every movement of the players, and now and then pulled excitedly upon the leash held by the sturdy little Freshman. Crack! and the ball sailed just far enough for the wearer of t he crimson to reach first base. Crack! and the second batter reached first base. Three balls. PEACE DAILY TIMES f«rt« ' . -f «..••: two strikes. What would the next one be? An ominous sound! The ball soared across the field and out into the street. Two runners reached the plate, but the third was put out just as she slid for it. The next batter struck out and the fifth sent the ball straight to first base. The inning ended 2 to in favor of X and there the score re- mained until the last half of the ninth inning. Help us out, Rex, old boy! mur- mured ' -Bib as she patted the collie ' s head and trotted out upon the field to take her last turn at the bat. Two wearers of the green were on bases. If only she could send that ball far, far away! Crack! the bat hit it clean and straight and it went skimming down the field just out of reach of the clutehing fingers of right-fielder. And after it shot a yellow streak, for Freshie had forgotten Rex ' a leash in her excitement. Before she could shout ' Rex! Rex! come here ! yellow and crimson were hopelessly mixed with the ball some- where underneath. Rex had tripped the right-fielder just as both grabbed for the ball. Bib sped on to home-plate while dog and girl were extricating themselves. What mattered it that the next two batters struck out? The score was 3 to 2 and shouts of Peace! l eace! Peace! rent the air.
