Your cooperation and kindness toward me will always bring fond memories as I think of each one of you. Your future can be as glorious as your dream. Profit by past mistakes, work hard for today and face tomorrow with reason and determination. Tomorrow ' s sunrise is another generation ' s sunset. More than ever, there is a need for compassion, foresight and dedi- cation. Make tomorrow ' s sunrise a beautiful day, not only for your genera- tion, but also for generations to come. Health, Happiness and Best Wishes. Principal Dedication While dedicating a yearbook is a challenging task, we, the members of the Class of 1983 have an easier task than most. Our faculty of over one hundred teachers contains many who - because of their dedica- tion, committment, and energy - stand out. The Class of 1983 proudly dedicates this META to one such member of our faculty: Mr. Andrew Metropolis. Himself a graduate of the Seeglitz High School, he returned to teach in the Peabody High Social Studies Department after earning his Bachelor ' s Degree from Salem State College in 1969. He also holds a Master ' s Degree as well as many credits beyond. As a leader in the Social Studies Department, he has introduced several new courses. The History of Essex County is one of the high points of these new courses due to his own personal involvement and leadership in the Peabody Historical Society. A noted coin collector, Mr. Metropolis has brought parts of his collection to his classes, thus adding an extra dimension to the study of history. His extensive collection of World War Two memorabilia has also impressed many Peabody students. And so, Mr. Metropolis, for your dedication to teaching, your enthusiasm in working with students, your good humor and con- stant encouragement, we, the Class of 1983 gratefully dedicate this META to you. Nance CLASS From our first day at Peabody Veterans Memorial High School we knew that we would have many experiences and memories that could not be forgotten. We were welcomed by our new principal, Mr. Welch, and our Unit Directors, Mr. Codair, Mr. Eagar, and Dr. Faria. Then we proceeded to our homerooms where graduates from Higgins were on one side of the room and graduates from Kennedy were on the other. Taking a tour of our huge school was unique and many of us still remember our homeroom teachers saying, This is Main Street! We began to feel more at ease after finding our rooms and attending our classes. Soon enough we all blended into being a great Sophomore Class! Class elections took place with the help of our Sophomore Year Advisor, Mr. Terlizzi. Chosen as our officers were: President Evie Hantzopoulos, Vice President Tracey Irzyk, Secretary Dianne Alexander and Treasurer Ann Woods. The main goal for our Sophomore Year was to raise money. Throughout December our Homeroom Reps sold candy canes. They did a fine job but by December 24th, no one wanted to see a piece of red and white striped candy again!! Our major income came from the Sophomore magazine campaign. There were many prizes to encourage us all to Sell! Sell!! Sell!!! Combining all the subscriptions, we raised approximately one thousand dollars. Not a bad beginning! During the winter of ' 81, the snow enticed us for the up-and-coming ski trips! Our first taste of the slopes was at Cannon Mountain. Tracey ' s broken nose and a strained back or two were the only real injuries and a great time was had by all. Our first high school dance — with Don Masters providing the music — was a success. The second effort — with the Junior Class — showed us that one dance in the school cafeteria was enough! During our first year at Peabody High we witnessed some real talent displayed by the members of Stage One. While watching The Sound of Music, Lysistrata, and Wait Until Dark, we realized that our class had its share of musical talent as well as theatrical ability. As the year wound down, we found a lot of amusement at Paragon Park. Whether you walked on the beach, ate at the concession stands, played in the arcades or rode the amusements, there was plenty to do! Two bus loads of people attended that outing and there will never be anything quite like it again! The year ended with another election as we chose Evie Hantzopoulos as President, Nick Chunias as Vice President, Dianne Alexander as Secretary, and Nancy Marotta as Treasurer. We were now ready to move up in the ranks to become Juniors! Returning to school in September, we soon had the chance to order our class rings! Now all we had to do was to wait until December to pick them up — and pay for them! A Halloween Costume Party at Kowloon ' s Restaurant kicked off the special events of our Junior Year on October 31st. Big Daddy provided the music so everyone could rock! Some special guests in attendance were Baby New Year, Dorothy and her friends from Oz: Tinman, Scarecrow, and the Lion. We also welcomed Superman, Minnie Mouse, Little Bo Peep, Budman, and even Death was there. First prize was awarded to Karen O ' Neil who, complete with a dog tied to her leg, was a fire hydrant! In need of more funds, we decided to sell Peabody Tanner sweatshirts. They were available in our school colors — blue and white. The sale was a tremendous success and we exceeded our expectations by a considerable amount. Taking advantage of the great ski conditions, Nick Chunias put together some terrific ski trips. First a repeat to Cannon Mountain and then on to new heights at Loon Mountain. There was such an abundance of enthused skiiers for the Cannon trip that following a bus load of Juniors was an additional van filled with our classmates! Leaving sleepy-eyed in the morning was worth the awesome time we had! Peabody High invaded the mountains of New Hampshire and it seemed we just could not get enough!! Once again Stage One proved that we are truly blessed to have great talent in our school. They presented Sweet Charity for rave audiences in November and followed that success with Hello Out There and You Can ' t Take It With You. Valentine Day of our Junior Year was eagerly anticipated as the Student Council again sponsored a Carnation Day. Over 3000 carnations were sold! By the end of the day, the halls were painted with red, pink and white petals! Two juniors were elected as council officers that year. Tracy Irzyk took the Vice Presidency and Mark Trabucco handled the Treasurer ' s responsibilities. On March 14, 1982, we had our St. Patrick ' s Day Italian Night at Augustine ' s Restaurant. After stuffing our faces with tons of pasta, we danced all night to Steve Cataldo of Sound-a-Round. No one will ever forget the lone dancer on the floor — with the red napkin as a bandana — dancing to the song L.A. Woman. (Was it you, Joe Daly?) Our officers and our Class Advisor, Mrs. Yost, had been preparing for the highlight of the year — the Junior Prom. Finally, it arrived! Our special night took place at the Allenhurst Restaurant on May 7th, attended by nearly two hundred couples. After our chicken dinner, we danced to the music of 3 OZ. Kristin Bouchard, chosen as Prom Queen, was joined by Terry Flynn, Sharon Hart, Chris Sullivan, Laurie Nash, Marie Glyptis, Debbie Tullo, Maria Bettencourt and Nancy Washeba in our Court. It was a night enjoyed by each of us! In making preparations for our Yearbook, the 1983 META staff sponsored a t-shirt day on June 15. The Gainsboro photographer took pictures in color of many of us in our favorite t-shirts. A great variety of shirts were worn by members of all three classes. Throughout the day there were different photos taken, whether on the football field, in the halls or in the cafeteria. The day was full of fun and we hardly realized that these pictures would form a permanent record as part of our yearbook! We made it through our Junior Year and were finally ready for the last step — becoming a SENIOR! We elected to be led by President Susan Kneeland, Vice President Nick Chunias, Secretary Scott Kennedy and Treasurer Jonathan Burns. We knew we were in good hands and were ready for our best year ever with our new advisor Mrs. Kozwich. HISTORY Our first SENIOR event was the Back-to-School Luau! This event was held at Kowloon ' s Restaurant on September 6, 1982. The music by Group Therapy kept the over-250 excited Seniors jumping as everyone realized that this was the beginning of a great year to come! As October began, our Senior Class was preparing the costumes for the Halloween Party at St. John ' s Hall on October 31st. Being greeted by E.T. was a huge surprize! Everyone came in spectacular costumes and the judges had a hard time in determining the winners! For the second year in a row First Prize went to Karen O ' Neil, the traffic light. Through the night, Jason walked around baffling everyone. After taking bets on who Jason was, it was quite a surprize when it turned out to be Tracy Irzyk behind the ugly mask and bulky coat. Taking advantage of the promise of a nice sunny day and the Veterans ' Day holiday, we ventured out to Cy Tenny Park for a Field Day. Many activities took place throughout the day. No one will forget the softball game! Our announcer, Fin Burns, titled the game The Lightweights vs. the Dumpies. Next was the egg toss — with many of us getting eggs broken all over us! It was a close contest between Karen O ' Neil Lisa Cassidy vs. T racey Irzyk Lisa Strabone. Later, modeling their blue t-shirts proclaiming I won the egg toss of ' 83, Lisa and Karen were glad that they didn ' t become all sticky! The second annual nighttime pep rally was held on October 2nd on the football field. Chris Faletra, as master of ceremonies, told everyone about the fall sports in addition to football. All the football team was there along with Coach Nizwantowski. On behalf of the team, Joe Daly spoke to the enthusiastic crowd. The cheerleaders topped off the evening with their routines, dancing and cheering to the song Eye of the Tiger. It was a very impressive sight to see all the cheerleaders lined up the length of the football field. Organized by Kathy Holden and Karen O ' Neil, the Student Council Dance, held on November 11th, was quite a success! This event made a considerable profit, unusual for a dance at school. On the half-day of school before Thanksgiving, Mr. Welch let the Class of 83 assemble on the football field to form the numerals 83 in order to permit a picture to be taken from the school ' s third floor. This picture, organized by the Yearbook staff, was to be used as the endsheet of our ' 83 META. Class officers Sue, Nick, Scott and Jonathan did a good job of getting us into position despite the drizzle that began to dampen our enthusiasm. That night we kept up the party tradition by meeting at the Prince House of Pizza for our Homecoming Pizza Party. After eating all the pizza we could possibly consume, we danced to the music of Big Daddy! Anxiously awaiting the outcome of the Homecoming Queen contest, we had another reason to be excited: For the first time in Peabody High School history, a Homecoming KING would be announced. As Sue Kneeland named the winners, the whole room shook with excitement. Craig Burns and Sue Connelly were our Homecoming Couple! After their special dance, it was announced that in honor of Mrs. Hartshorn ' s birthday, we would celebrate with cake and singing Happy Birthday. Upon leaving, we received a miniature blue and white football inscribed Peabody High School. The surprizes never ceased at the Homecoming Party! On Thanksgiving morning, the Student Council held a breakfast in the cafeteria. The meal consisted of eggs and sausages, muffins, juice, fruit, and other goodies. The members did all the cooking with a little help from some others. The comments were all favorable and we are sure that this is going to become an annual tradition! Moving from the warmth of the cafeteria to the chill of the football field was quite a surprize. But the Football Team had a real surprize in store for everyone — especially the Saugus Team! The Tanners reached down for all the skill, talent and luck they could draw upon to give the Hometown Folks a real Thanksgiving Day thrill! This one game made up for any disappointments of the season — Saugus went down 14-0!!! The last weeks of 1982 went by rapidly as we were impressed with Stage One ' s performance of The Music Man in November (to be followed in the Spring by Equus ). The Donkey Basketball Game amused many of us as we laughed at ourselves after falling off countless numbers of donkies! But December brought Christmas and the Eighth Annual Snowball that would be held at Joe Binette ' s Chalet in Middleton. Group Therapy again provided the music to which we danced after our dinner of turkey with all the fixins ' . The high point of the evening was the performance of the Peabody High Singers who sang their own versions of ever-popular Christmas Carols and livened up the crowd. The arrival of Santa Faletra was another thrill! The distribution of the TANNER made December all that more special with its re-cap of all our activities since September. Jeff Baker and his staff did an outstanding job producing our long-awaited School Newspaper! The new year of 1983 arrived on schedule (amid some of the warmest weather on record) and we were scarecely six months away from Graduation! It didn ' t seem possible! Just as we came back to school in January, it was time to go to the Auditorium to be measured for our caps and gowns. We laughed and joked when the cap sizes were announced! It all brought Graduation Day a little bit closer. There were many more activities to come before that important day in June would arrive: a Mad-Hatter Pizza Party, a Blood Drive, signing up for our Class of ' 83 football shirts and the long-awaited Toga Party were just a few of the more famous events in the planning stages. The year was approaching an end, however. We awaited it hopefully and with great expectations. It was a great year to be a SENIOR!!!!! Good Luck to the Class of 1983!!!!!!!!! Murray, J. Bergeron, (Standing) M. Ryan, J. Foster, G. Wall, S. Thompson, A. Stanganelli, (kneeling) K. Champagne. Over the past few years, PVMHS lacrosse has become an increasingly popular sport. Coach Robert Danish has built the founda- tion for a program that has taught many stu- dents about the game. The results have been evident in many strong and talented players. The ' 81- ' 82 team, which finished the season with an 8-6 record, just missed the State Championship by one game. However, they did capture the North Shore title by being undefeated in the North Shore League with a record of 6-0. Many of the players from the ' 81- ' 82 team returned in the ' 82- ' 83 season to the positions in which they excelled: Jon Izzo in attack position; Kevin Houlden, Jack Foster and Mike Murray at second midfield line; Keith Champagne and Chris Faletra an- choring down the defense; and Scott Thompson in the net. These seniors had the experience and the skill necessary to carry the team to victory, and they anticipated a successful season. PLAY BALL Coach Sapienza, D. Quinlan, M. London, J. Manning, D. Garafano, A. Colarusso, D. O ' Neil, J. Daly, P. Yeo, D. Sapienza wv: •« The 1983 Tanner Baseball team was characterized by its versatility as well as its skilled pitching. Although the team lost one starting pitcher to graduation, the loss was compensated for by the return of another pitcher who had recovered from a shoulder injury. The depth of the ' 83 team was due largely to the multi-faceted talents of the players. Each member was counted on to be profi- cient at more than one position. Returning pitchers were Dave Garafano, Mike London, and three-year starter John Manning. Seniors Joe Daly, Pat Yeo, Scott Kennedy, Dave Quinlan, and Anthony Colarusso filled the rest of the positions. Coaching these determined and skillful players was Rick Sapienza, who also antici- pated a winning season. The veteran pitching and coaching, along with the versatility of the players, promised to be a strong nucleus for a successful campaign. - PLAYING THE FIELD (Front row) Head Coach Nizwantowski, B. Sanderson, P. Zorzonello, J. Maguire, S. Ilmrud. Entering their senior year, the varsity veterans knew that this season would be unlike previous ones because they had a new coach, Ed Nizwantowski. He was in a difficult spot, having been told only a week before the first session that he had received the job. Left with little time to organize a coaching staff, he recruited former PVMHS standouts L. Archis, J. Nangle, and D. Murphy. After the team ' s first workout, the play- ers realized that their new coaches were dedicated and enthusiastic. The staff and players worked very hard, but the team just didn ' t have the numbers or experience that Peabody has had in years past. However, the 1982-83 team is proud to have started a new era in PVMHS football, and they wish Coach Niz and his future Tanners the best of luck. KEEPING (Back row) S. Feeny, J. Call, G. The Boy ' s and Girl ' s Cross Country Teams, undefeated through their first four meets, hoped to keep up that suc- cess all the way to a potential Greater Boston League Championship. Many juniors and sophomores on the teams gave strength and depth to the efforts of Seniors Jim Mello, Sean Kavanagh, Dave Coulter, Mike Johnson, John Newbury, and Terry Ellis. Each senior on the team made his and her own unique contribution to what everyone hoped would be a championship sea- son. ON TRACK! (Back row) P. Berube, C. Moran, K. O ' Neil, D. Kerrigan, L. Diplacido, K. Champagne, K. McGovern. (Front row) G. Braz, T. Eon, T. Ellis, K. Romano, M. Donlon, S. Mello. HMS An important element of the success of the team was the dedication and hard work of Coach Phil Sheridan. Demanding exertion and serious effort. Coach Sheri- dan aided his runners every step of the way. His own reputation as a runner gave him the insight to understand the many challenges that faced the team. The team ' s successes were due in great measure to Coach Sheridan, and the 1982-83 team wishes him and his future runners the best of luck. 127 BATTER UP! The 1983 Girls ' Softball Team looked forward to a promising season. The girls had their eyes on the Greater Boston League crown after many grueling workouts and lots of practicing, and they anticipated fun as well as success. ■ s s • v V . ; K. Holden, K. Brennan, K. Sullivan, Coach Benoit, K. Meagher, C. McCarthy Returning seniors were starting pitcher Kathy Holden, along with Cathy McCarthy, Kerry Meagher, Kelly Sullivan, and Kelly Brennan. Coach Lorraine Benoit deserves a great deal of credit for contributing much of her own time and hard work to the season. The combined efforts of coach and team were evident in this year ' s strong and chal- lenging club. (Back row) S. Kavanagh, M. Hart, C. Cassidy, S. Seed, E. Hantzopoulos, M. Donlon, M. Albert, K. LIFE IN THE FAST LANE PVMHS Track has been one of the most successful sports at the High School. Over the years, the Tanners have won many consecutive GBL titles, and, at the start of the ' 83 season the boys were in the midst of 47 duel meet victory streak which the team hoped would con- tinue on throughout the season. Over the years Coach George Smyrnios has cultivated many successful runners. In 1983 his charges included seniors Ted Grevelis, Mike Murray, Dave Coulter, Sean Kavanagh, Jim Mello, Jeff Tretola, Scott Thompson, Rob McKinnon, Jeff Lewis, Mike Johnson, Kerry Kelly, Evie Hantzopoulos, Charlene Isaacson, Mary Albert, Diane Smerczynski, and Terry Ellis. All indications pointed to yet another winning season for the Peabody Tanner Track team. 129 ON THE REBOUND! The PVMHS Boys ' Basketball team came into the 1983 season anticipating success. The Tanners, after struggling through a 5-12 campaign in ' 82, hoped to turn the program around under sec- ond year coach Ken Peavey. Seniors Tony Spignese, Steve Shepard and Captain Scott Kennedy worked during the offseason with a talented group of underclassmen in preparation for the CBL schedule. - (Back Row) B. Brown, J. The ' 83 Tanners strived for strong team play and a depth that would create an awesome force against their opponents and help to place them high in the league standings. The team veterans agree that 1983 was the year Peabody basketball turned around, beginning a new program that should lead to many victorious seasons. FOUL PLAY (Back row) Coach Heil, D. Pettipas, D. McGovern, L. Smith, K. Foley, T. Spencer, K. Meagher. (Front row) C. McCarthy, T. Irzyk, L. Cassidy, K O ' Neil. The 1982-83 Girls Basketball team hoped to continue its winning ways for Peabody High. Seniors on this year ' s team included Kerry Meagher, Cathy McCarthy, and Karen O ' Neil, and ex- cellent leadership was provided by sen- ior co-captains Tracey Irzyk and Lisa Cassidy. These girls aspired to blend their talents for many victories in the 82-83 season. Depth and balance character- ized the 82-83 team, which played under the direction of coach Jane Heil and trainer Ju- lie Macrinotis. The fact that the girls got along well together off the court was reflected in their performance on the court. They left the season with good memories and a sense of achievement which evolved from strong team effort. f ■ ■ |fl g 9 KEEPING TRACK OF THINGS The 1982-83 Indoor Track Team worked hard to dominate their oppo- nents. The Boys team hoped to defend their titles as State Champs and North- ern Area Champs, while the girls antici- pated gaining the GBL title. Under the strong leadership of coaches George Smyrnios, Jim Nangle, the goals of both teams appeared realistic. (Back row) K. Ellis, M. Donlon, D. Smerczynski, K. Keating, S. Seed, D. Woodworth, K. AS COLD AS ICE Although the 82-83 Tanner hockey season was a fair one in terms of point scoring, it will go down as one of the best in sportsmanship. Coaches Kinna- ly, Flynn, and Costa taught their players not only the basics of the game, but also how to win and lose with dignity. The team ' s attitude was evident in many a Tanner performance. The five seniors on the ' 82- ' 83 team; co-captain Anthony Co- larusso, co-captain Tom Ac- quaviva, Tim Williams, Don Fortini, and Mark Hill; played with enthusiasm and a great deal of dedication to their team. They left the season with pride and wish future Tanner teams the best of luck. THE BEAM TEAM The 82-83 gymnastics team in- cluded seniors Therese Cham- pagne, Lee Rauci, Erin Ho rri- gan, and captain Julie Cardin- al. The girls practiced diligent- ly in an effort to perfect their skills at their respective events and hoped to leave the 1983 season as one of the most suc- cessful in PVMHS gymnastics history. The Peabody High Gymnastics team has performed very well in the past few years. During the 80-81 and 81-82 seasons, PVMHS won the Northeastern Championships, as well as en- tering the District Champion- ships in 1981. The 1983 team, under the direction of coach Sue Lentis, hoped to carry on the winning tradition. (Back row) D. Thompson, K. Brown, H. Doersam. (Middle row) j. Gargas, L Sums. (Front row) J. The attitude and spirit of the team were essential to their outstanding perfor- mances. CHEERS! (Back row) R. Sharry, L. Xerras, K. O ' Neil, P. Churchill, R. Pifalo, A. Silva. (Middle row) A. The 1982-83 Cheerleadi ng season began early in the spring of ' 82 when many girls attended after-school practices and worked hard to im- prove their skills in nervous anticipa- tion of trying-out for the squad of their choice. After being accepted by squad, the girls learned and re- hearsed up to fifty chants and cheers for their upcoming seasons. The girls didn ' t take lightly their re- sponsibility of raising spirits at Pea- body games. The energy involved showed in red faces and hoarse voices, and their effort was greatly appreciated by both Tanner fans and team members. The three 82-83 squads would like to show their appreciation of a group of unseen, yet important, cheer- leaders. These are the boosters, who did all the behind-the-scenes work and raised spirits in their own special way. IN THE SWING! (Back row) Coach Hennessey, S. Johnson, P. Sedlier, M. Klotz, B. Edmonds, L. In the Schoolboy golf scene, the Tanner golfers have long been known as a force with which to be reckoned. In the 1981-82 season, after years of dominating the Greater Boston League, the PVMHS golf team joined the powerful Catholic Conference. Under the direc- tion of Coach George Hennes- sey, the team posted a 9-2-1 re- cord, taking second place. By depending on the experience and skillful playing of the four veteran seniors, Thomas Ac- quaviva, Donald Fortini, Peter Cronan, and Mark Trabucco, the golf team hoped to leave the 1982-83 season as one of the winningest ever at Pea- body Veierans Memorial High School. 144 TENNIS. S. Morrison, M. Abizaid, N. Barrett, B. Myhal, A. Garber, H. Marks, D. Stein Seniors on the girls ' tennis team included Mimi Abi- zaid, Nancy Barrett and Eve Zimmerman. These strong and dedicated players were counted on to carry the team to many victories in the ' 82- ' 83 season. With this kind of skill and experience, the Peabody Veterans Memorial High School Tennis Team looked forward once again to competing for the League Championship and a birth in the State Tournament. The 1983 Tennis Team expected to carry on the win- ning tradition of Peabody tennis. During the 1981-82 season, under first year coach Tony Lena, the Peabody netmen finished in second place with a 7-3 record and qualified for the State Tournament. After losing only two varsity players to graduation, the Tanners hoped to come back with an experienced and talented team. Expected to lead the boy ' s team were Bob Myhal and Mike Royer, who had both been varsity starters as sophomores and juniors. Another senior, Andy Garber, played in a number of varsity matches in the ' 81- ' 82 season, and at the start of the ' 82- ' 83 season hoped to make a strong bid for a starting job. Other returning seniors who added to the depth of the team were Harold Marks, Scott Morrison and David Stein. STICKING WITH IT! v, ■ 1982 marked the PVMHS field hockey team ' s 8th consecutive tournament-bound season, and this year ' s squad hoped to keep up the Peabody tradition of success. Spignese, and T. McGinn made valuable contri- butions to the team. Coach Fernandes helped the veteran players further refine their soccer skills. Under his di- rection the inexperienced players developed as the sea- son progressed. Everyone worked hard to create a great team and a winning atmo- sphere. Business Manager Editorial Board Dianne Alexander, Susan Cain, Paula Driscoll, Jennifer Dziuba Lisa Gallant, Doreen Gallo, Sharon Hart, John Hurley, Rachel McGrail, Joyce Patermo Hello! You are approaching the final section of the 1983 META: the Ad Section. But don ' t stop now! The section of advertisements is very important. Many of the individuals, businesses and companies that have advertised in our yearbook have supported countless issues of past METAs. Some ads are new with META ' 83 and we are very happy to have them join us. To our new advertisers as well as to our old stand-bys we say a sincere THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT! Working on a yearbook is fun, challenging, hard work, enjoyable and also — expensive! The role that our advertisers play is an important one because there would not be a yearbook without them. As a way of saying Thanks, we have arranged to have the Ad Section printed on special blue denim paper. We hope that you like this special effect. We hope that you will look through our Ad Section very carefully. The next time that you are shopping in one of the stores that has purchased ad space in the META, we hope that you will tell them that you saw their ad in the 1983 META and you appreciate their support for our yearbook. Thank you. And we hope you enjoy our book!
