Pre-season brought many question marks, but by Thanksgiving they were answered with a resounding 9-1 ' mark. The Doomsday Defense , the pride of the Tanners, had five shutouts. But this year was the year of the offense. It set a school record lor most points scored, averaging 27 points a game! The season finished on an emotional note, winning the big one with Saugus. The Tanners continued to uphold th Pe ody traditictfi in 1979, and did it with class. Offensively Demo Drougas an Bruce Mac Gregor were the best t dem of running backs in the GBL. Demo, Mr. Inside , scored 90 points to lead all GBL and North Shore scorer ' Bruce, Mr. Outside , had 72 points and had the flare for being the Gamebreaker. Quarterback George Kitsakos was an excellent field general, and Wayne Me Glaughlin, was a devestating blocker at fullback, especially against rival Saugus High. Both Demo and Wayne return next season. The fine offensive line that opened gaping holes at times was led by tackles Dave Scribner and Paul Cormier, Guards Mike Wall and Bob Broughton, Centers Rick Heath and Jon Perillo, and ends Keith Allen, Chuck Holden and Mike Gallagher. This lin5 . developed into one of the finest units produced at P. H. S. The Doomsday Defense featured spec Hsts at tackle Tim Maroney and Bob Anderson, middle guard Glenn Potter, linebackers Jim GToole, Wayne Me Glaughlin, Greg Sperounis, cornerback Pat Conrad, safties Errol Apostolopoulos, T. J. Andre, and Dave Sweitzer. Two way starters were middle guard Dave Scribner, tackle Paul Cormier, ends Keith Allen and Mike Gallagher, linebacker Demo Drougas, and cornerback Bruce Mac Gregor. 1979 was a team-effort. A team that was truly a team in every aspect. The team also placed second in the division 1 state meet. Highlighting the season was Lesley Welch ' s successful defense of her individual title and twin sister Lisa ' s third place finish. Lesley also placed 8th in the national championship held in San Diego, California to earn All American status. Graduating seniors are; Fran Cronan, who placed 6th in Division 1 and 15th in the All State Meet. Fran has been a premier girls distance runner in the state for the past three years, and making the Globe All Scholastic team in 1978; Dianne Fisher who has been a main stay on the team for the past two y ars; and Andrea Garnick, who in her first year of cross country, had an exceptional year. The boy ' s 1979 cross country season wgs highlighted by back to back state championships by Fernando Braz, who was also chosen the state ' s cross country ' fpnner of the year for the second straight time. Fernando afso placed 15th in the national championship held in San iego, California, which will also earn him an All American status. Overall, the team nded with, a 5=3 record, but most of the top runners are back only losing Braz, Dick Hubley and Blair Budka to graduation. Hubley was voted the. most improved runner on the team_and Budka was a close second. A young and somewhat inexp erien ceidiPeabodv High hockey team had compiled an 8-7 mark by the three-quarter point of the 1979-80 Greater Boston Teague season. The defending champion Tanners are l d by league-scoring leader and captain Jim Geraghty and able linemans Mike McHugh and Peter Sedlier. Other major contributors to the team ' s success are forwards Jghn Malo, Tom Doyleiand Dan Terenzoni, defensemen Bob Manning, Davis Scribner, Scott Richards and Chris f ocher and goalie Ed DeMild. The entire team, with the exception of seniors Scribner and Kocher, return next year thus giving the Blue and White an opportunity to E gain the GBL title which they have captured three times in six seasons. The 1979-80 edition of the Tanners basketball team was hampered somewhat by ' inexperience this year, losing seven games by a total of twenty-bne points. The team was led by seniors Dave Mogka, Vinny Harris, Jim, Delaney, Brian Patterson, Steve Barrett and Geoff Less. Junior two-year veteran starter Mike White Jfeads next year ' s promising group of players. The 1979-80 Swimming season opened wifh Peabody becoming a member of the newly formed G.B.L. League. Our league opponents are Arlington, Billerica, Haverill, Malden, .Methuen, Medford, and Somerville. Along with the outside meets ' we carry a schedule of sixfeen contesfs. We began- the season with a strong veteran team, featuring seniors Glenn Riley, Paul Smith, Cliff Platt and Amy Harris. Our junior swimmers and divers made, an important contribution to the team. Although we , had few record breaking times, we did h’Svg several , improved swimmers and divers who Waj e up the strongest team in P.V.M.H.S. short swimming history. Departing upon graduation arei freestylers Paul Smith and Cliff Piatt, backstroker Glenn Riley, who were the main point getters all year long, and versatile Amy Harris. We look forward to a successful 1980-81 with the nucleus of the team returning. 50 BASKETBALL 51 ; GIRLS 52 BASKETBALL 53 HOCKEY 54 HOCKEY 55 WINTER TRACK WINTER TRACK 57 GYMNASTICS 58 GYMNASTICS J 59 SWIMMING 60 Top row left to right: Stacey Gordon, Cheryl Sternberg, Laire Gordon, Emily Comisky, Debbie Finegan, Kim St Germain, Sue Toub, Sandy Gorgus, Allison Kuhn, Gail Grany (Coach), Bottom row left to right: Chris Pelley, Lon Fortihni, Arlene Porcello, Dianne Trachia, Cathy Pelley, Debbie Bowler, Amy Wienberg, Lisa Geary Top row left to right: Lisa Welch, Amy Garnick, Dianne Fisher, Fran Cronah, Coach George Smyrnios Bottom row left to right: Marie Cooper, Karen Whippen, Kathy O ' Neil, Ellen Donlon, Lesley Welch Top row left to right: Coach Ed Kinnally, Ed De Mild Greg Rose, Ken Normon, Chris Kocher, Dave Scribner, John Malo, Dave Ledbury, Jim Geraghty, Bob Manning, Asst. VANNETT CHARy;S VORRIAS AL K V ENTWORTH JAMES ZOUR 161 162 FADS The 70s = A time to be remembered. It was a decade when one fad supplanted another with machine gun rapidity. It was a decade of roller skates and roller disco; an era of pocket calculators and Japanese imports. Girls were clad in designer jeans, down vests, and cowboy boots, or in nothing at all as they relaxed in a hot tub. People travelled the roads on skate boards, and the skies in hang gliders, and talked to their house plants as they created frozen yogurt in their food processors, while looking to their digital watches. Tee shirts and backpacking achieved great popularity, as did wood stoves and the macho male. Vans travelled the highways plastered with bumper stickers and fully equipped with C.B. ' s and Fuzz-busters. Cassette recorders were in evidence at tanning centers across the country. People were torn between eating pop rocks and caring for pet rocks. Streaking; the most popular sport of the early seventies, gave way to tennis and jogging later in the decade. Adidas and Nike vied for top spot in shoeing the participants, and Busch beer and Perrier Water vied for their thirst. FADS ■ They helped us make it through the turbulent decade of the 70 ' s. 164 SPORTS The main spoils events of the 70s were dominated more by league and team actions than the usual player accomplishments. The finalization of the AFL • NFL merger created two conferences and led to our present playoff format. Pittsburgh ' s four super bowl victories and Miami ' s perfect 17 - 0 season left tough acts for future teams to follow. HOCKEY ' S BEST: Capturing two Stanley Cups - ' 70, ' 72, and becoming the decade ' s most awesome team in ' 71; the Bruins set the pace for the next twenty years. BASKETBALL: The Celtics as usual were No. 1, but due to John Y. Brown handing away three top players for Bob MaCadoo, the team lost much momentum, rallying in ' 79 they came back to true form. BASEBALL: The Red Sox astounded everyone by setting countless records. Carlton Fiske ' s sixth game homer in the 1975 world series astounded millions. But, probably the clincher was Yaz ' s 400th homer. The team itself had most of its punch in 1977 only to lose it in 1978. All in all it was a decade of ups and downs. 165 PEOPLE Many unique people made the 70 ' s a memorable decade. In music, we saw the rise of Donna Sum- mer and the Village People on the disco scene. Peter Frampton and Kiss hit the top of the rock charts, and Blondie made its mark on the new wave music. John Travolta and Olivia Newton ' - lohn took us back to good old rock and roll in Grease. Television, that vast wasteland, was dominated by the presence of the original Angels - Jaclyn Smith, Kate Jackson, and Farrah Fawcett - Ma- jors, followed by the new center of viewers ' atten- tion - Loni Anderson. Movies experienced a big boom in attendance due to some masterful performances by Sylvester Stallone in Rocky I and 11 , the Paul Newman and Robert Redofrd combo in Butch Cassidy and The Sting and the unforgetable John Belu- shi in Animal House. Leonard Nimoy brought his memorable role as Mister Spock to the silver screen, and Steve Martin wowed audiences on tour, on television, and in his movie The Jerk. Perhaps the best loved characters to come to movieland, however, were R2 D2 and C3PO from Star Wars who clanked their way into our memories - and our hearts. 167 POLITICS The political climate oi the 70 ' s will long be remembered. A peanut farmer from Georgia won the 1976 Presidential election, and was caught on camera talcing a break in good ole boy style at brother Billy ' s gas station. Nixon resigned in disgrace following the Watergate scandal; Spiro Agnew also left office under less than favorable circumstances. In 1973 the televised heanngs of the Senate Watergate Committee transfixed the nation. On the international scene, Idi Amin, fanatic ruler of Uganda, was over - run by Tanzanian forces. Aleksander Solzhenitsyn dared to criticize Russia - and then turned his eye on America. The Shah was ousted from Iran, and took up temporary residence in New York City Hospital. Kissinger hit the road, at home and abroad, to plug his latest literary effort. The White House Years. Closer to home, Bert Lance awaits trial for questionnable financial dealings dating from his tenure at the Bank of Georgia. Mohammed Ah left the ring and was last seen in China promoting american goodwill to our newest allies. But perhaps the most memorable event in the 70 ' s was the visit of Pope John Paul II to America. He is the first pxintiff to ever set fcxit on american soil, and he has left with us a lasting impression. 168 169 EVENTS The decade of the 70s was one full of monumental events - on both the national and the international front. The 70 ' s was the decade of women ' s lib and an unsuccessful bid for passage of the ERA Amendment. The price of gasoline went from 40$ to well over a dollar and is still rising, while the cost of gold soared from $32 to over $800 an ounce. At Camp David, Maryland, three of the world ' s finest foremost leaders - Carter, Begin and Sadat - hammered out and signed the Mid - East Treaty. Margaret Thatcher was elected as the first female Prime Minister of England and Kennedy hit the camp aign trail in an attempt to win the democratic nomination from Jimmy Carter. America celebrated its Bicentennial with much pomp and flair. In recognition of the 200th birthday of the good old USA, the tall shipis visited Boston. Cambodia suffered from mass starvation, and the boat people left Cambodia ' s shores in search of a new home. The decade that began with the winddown of the Vietnam war ended with Americans held hostage in Iran, and the Russian invasion of Afghanistan. Khomeni was chosen as Man of the Year ' ' by Time Magazine. 170 Farewell HARRY S. TRUMAN, 88. Propelled stammering into the White House by Franklin D. Roosevelt ' s death, he soon took tirm command. He ordered atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, then swore never to use them against any other foe. He mapped the postwar recovery of the U.S. and Europe with his Marshal! Plan and Truman Doctrine, won an astounding election victory over Thomas Dewey and laid the foundations of a contain-the-Communists foreign policy that led Winston Churchill to declare: You, more than any other man, have saved Western civilization. LYNDON BAINES JOHNSON, 64, politician and paradox. A puller of beagles ' ears and a displayer of his appendectomy scar, he wielded a soft voice and a rough edge; he blustered in public and cajoled eloguently behind closed doors. Puppet master of the Senate in his Congressional days, he started his term as the 36th President with a burst of liberal legislation in civil rights, housing, education and medical care. Then his war on poverty — and his hold on the White House — foundered on the disaster of Vietnam. He left office saddened and embittered, but still somehow larger than life. ELVIS PRESLEY, 42. With his greasy hair, tight pants, undulating pelvis and rebel image, he was a performer whom parents abhorred, females adored and young men instantly imitated. He sold more than 500 million records, changing the course of pop music — and maybe youth — forever. MAO TSE-TUNG, 82, the colossal figure who dominated roughly one-quarter of the world ' s poulace tor nearly 30 years. Yet in the end, even he suspected that his Chinese revolution might prove no more than a footnote to history. In his memoirs, Henry Kissinger recalled a meeting between Mao and Richard Nixon. The Chairman ' s writings moved a nation and have changed the world, Nixon said. I have not been able to change it, replied Mao. I have only been able to change a few places in the vicinity of Peking. HUBERT HORATIO HUMPHREY, 66, a happy warrior of U.S. politics. An unabashed liberal who loved the politics of small towns and the power of big government, he emerged from a drugstore in the Midwest during the Great Depression and went on to become mayor, senator. Vice President and senator again. His landmark legislation, including the Civil Rights Act of 1964, was one of his legacies; another was his boundless goodwill and optimism, which neither cancer nor three defeats for the Presidency could ever quite quell. JOHN WAYNE, 72, man, movie star and legend. DUKE ELLINGTON, 75, composer, bandleader and pianist. Starting in 1927, when he burst onto the scene at Harlem ' s Cotton Club, he produced the most distinctive body of work — more than a thousand pieces — in all jazz. As a creator- performer, he was, in a phrase he fancied, beyond category. GROUCHO MARX, 86, comedian with the leer, the cigar and the unmitigated impudence. Nine dollars and 40 dents? he exclaimed to a lady he had just wined and dined. This is an outrage. If I were you I wouldn ' t pay it. GOLDA MEIR, 80. With her dowdy dress and her peasant shrewdness, she could have been just another grandmother. Instead, the carpenter ' s daughter who grew up in Milwaukee became Israel ' s woman of steel, helping to found the state and serving as its fourth Prime Minister. Though she sought peace, she fought every Arab raid vnth even heavier counterviolence. But she lived to embrace Egyptian President Anwar Sadat on his dramatic peacemaking trip to Israel. DAVID BEN-GURION, 87, Israel ' s first Prime Minister. To his admirers he was a Biblical prophet and visionary; to his critics, a self- righteous and stubborn leader who imposed his dreams as well as his definition of Zionism on the people of Israel and the Jews of America. But without him, Israel might not exist. JACKIE ROBINSON, 53, Brooklyn Dodger. Unconquerable in spirit and and unbeatable on the basepaths, he became America ' s first black baseball player. HOWARD HUGHES, 70, Heroic aviator, movie producer, squire of beautiful women, daring businessman and the ultimate eccentric, he was the century ' s most conspicuous tycoon — though he hadn ' t been seen in public in almost twenty years. J. EDGAR HOOVER, 77, held more power longer than any man in U.S. history. Much of that power on fear — the presumption being that, as master of the FBI files for 48 years, he knew everybody else ' s secrefs. So far, hisfory has not treated him kindly. CHARLES DE GAULLE, 79. Twice, by sheer force of will, he saved h is country from its own worst instincts — once from giving in altogefher to Nazi rule and again from dissolving into civil war over the Algerian issue. Of himself he said: DeGaulle is not of the left. Nor of the right. Nor of the center. DeGaulle is above. JANIS JOPLIN, 27, rock singer. A white woman who belted out the black man ' s blues, she sang with raw emotion — and she came to suffer the rock star ' s hazards of strong liquor, hard drugs and too many nights in motels. On one of them, she took an overdose of herion. ARISTOTLE ONASSIS, 69, a self-made shipping tycoon who knew not only how to amass money but how to spend it. Having enjoyed an empire worth at least $500 million, the world ' s most lavish 325 foot yacht and two of its most glamorous women, he died in the that living well is its own reward. BING CROSBY, 73. Without ever seeming to try, he became one of the most influential pop singers of his time. VINCE LOMBARDI, 57, football coach: Winning isn ' t everything. It is the only thing. NELSON ROCKEFELLER. The grandson of John D. Rockerfeller proved that the rich can manage in public office as well as in the board room. Although he was Vice President and a four-term New York governor, Rocky, 70, never fulfilled his ultimate goal: to be President. THURMAN MUNSON Behind home plate, catcher Thurman Munson was the rock upon which the New York Yankees built two world championships. Munson, 32, died when his plane crashed; his teammates said: He played hard, he played tough, he played hurt. ARTHUR FIEDLER, 84, the grandfatherly conductor of the Boston Pops Orchestra for 50 years and one of the city ' s most visited monuments. 73 Do You Remember . . . Thinking you would never make it through twelve years of school And suddenly you were in Junior High Meeting brand new friends And growing closer to old ones Then the time came to say goodbye Do You remember . . . Your first day of High School Feeling donfused and all alone Having to adjust to a whole different life Meeting new teachers And Realizing it was finally time to start growing up There is no turning back once you have moved forward If there were — you wouldn ' t be where you are right now — Graduating One’bf the biggest steps in your life Knowing you have succeeded That there ' s a whole new life ahead of you — a challenge But Will You Remember . . . The greatest memories that one can hold The love between great friends When you needed someone to talk to And someone was there A special girlfriend or boyfriend you could lean on And a teacher you could depend on You are older now But the greatest years were when you were growing up And you learned to love and trust 174 1 ENJOY pu r 1 McDonald ' s I IbankAmericardI muniii 176 M.H.
