r wi ■ - 3o(2 r? 2013 . 58.2 Yearbook To some a window may be an opening which admits air and light, but to the class of ' 79 it is an opening to the future. For the past twelve years we have taken only brief glances through the windows of our lives, but with graduation, new win- dows will have been opened into a world of new experiences . Though we leave many windows behind as we travel through life, these windows remain open so that, pausing on our journey, we may gaze back through them at the experiences that are now only memories . The sun bounces off a window In turn you see your reflection, An image of a high school graduate . The blank face stares out, you think: School has been my security, where do I go from here? We do not wish to say good-bye, to leave the only life we have ever known But on we must go to where our future lies . Look ahead and smile, because the memories of the last twelve years will be everlasting. Today we are young: Our lives are filled with special songs still to be sung . . . hearts still to be given . . . faith in ourselves and in our world, unshaken. But when our songs and aspirations have been forgotten . . . and when our faith is worn with age, we will remember, as through a window, these golden days and THE NATURE OF YOUTH. 8 iiVi It Yesterday is but today ' s memory, Existing only in our minds . Like an ever-changing kaleidoscope, The past is revealed by a pattern colored by half- remembered. Scattered thoughts . Each thought is a bit of stained glass, Some somber. Some sparkling; Some stained with satisfaction, Some with regret. Each represents a person, A place. Or an experience Which contributes to the whole design of Yesterday. Through this book, The past becomes alive again. Windows on the past bring back memories of our lives at PVMHS. The META is one of these windows . As we gaze through this yearbook, we are reminded of the special ex- periences we shared together. The windows of PVMHS have come to a close, but this is not the end. This is only the beginning . . . WINDOW ON THE FACULTY To the Class of 1979: When the students of several nations voted on the greatest man in history, Louis Pasteur headed the list. The four outstanding qualities of this greatest man in history , according to a psychologist, were: enthusiasm, industry, courage and the ability to learn from his mistakes . For each of you, graduation provides the opportunity to reflect upon both previous mistakes and accomplishments as well as to anticipate future goals. All of you can achieve your goals by utilizing previous knowledge with the desire for continual learning. I fervently hope and trust that success will follow you whether it be for further aca- demic training, or immediate employment. My very best wishes to each of you for health, happiness and inner peace as you join the alumni of Peabody Veterans Memorial High School. Most sincerely, William A. Welch Sincerely, Mr. Richard J. White Dear Graduates: The staff of the Vocational High School and I would like to express our hardiest congratula- tions to the class of 1979 and in particular to those members with whom we were most closely associated -- the students of the vocational school . The special skills that you have acquired in your specific area of training, wisely used, should be a stepping stone into your future, a future that we hope will be fulfilling and pro- ductive . Best wishes, and please visit us from time to time as we will always be interested in you and your progress . ADMINISTRATION ROBERT IRELAND JAMES PI CONE ■ m WILLIAM A. Words cannot ex- press adequately the gratitude we owe them, for it is largely due to their encouragement and understanding that we possess the knowledge that is ours today. Wherever we may find ourselves in the years to come , we may be sure that the present faculty, the men and the women we have grown to like and to respect, is the one that will remain forever in our hearts and in our memories . 31 WINDOW ON SPORTS 1st row, left to right: M. I ll - - ,,ni ‘ Mill -k f j, ; v %•« : ■ b J W V ' b v ‘.?ri: A - ! -vT W The PVMHS varsity Football team finished with an impressive 7-3 record for the 1978 season. Many pre-season polls and experts were wondering if this was going to be a losing season in Tanner-Town, the last one being in 1970. With only several starter! back, the coaching staff was faced with rebuilding a team which could compete in the physical GBL. It is indeed an honor to this year ' s squad, to exceed all expectations and nearly claim a GBL title. Finishing second to Medford, two six-point losses stood be- tween PVMHS and a title . L Probably the strongest component of the Tanners in 1978 was its defensive secondary . Appropriately nick-named the Jolters , they did just that to opposing ball-carriers and receivers. Led by free safety Mark Gillespie, cornerbacks John Lane and Scott Wlasuk, and invert Sean Connors, the Tanners defense again was very formidable. The secondary played so cohesively as a unit that its main ingredient, free safety Mark Gil- lespie, was able to set a career high in interceptions at PVMHS. Mark was also inter- viewed by a local Boston TV station following the team ' s victory over Chelsea . It marked the first time a Peabody athlete has appeared in a sportscast on Boston TV. Mark has proven himself and has become one of the most highly- recruited student athletes in Eastern Mass . Linebackers Dave Wall and Kevin Waters added another dimension which, combined with the secondary, made it hard for opposing QB ' s to throw on the Tanners. Veteran line man Paul Griffin anchored the defensive line. The defensive line also had seniors Chris Tillas, Tom Peretzian, Bob Aronson, Bob Rubano and Steve Gallant. Steve Gal- lant was used in many positions and was a pleasant surprise on defense. On offense, John Lane and Tom D ' Amato were two moving forces in a unit that averaged almost twenty points a game. John Lane was constantly a threat to keep the ball and showed a passing prowness that made him one of the better Tanner QB ' s of this decade. Tom D ' Amato was a strong off-tackle and inside runner and, although small for a PVMHS tailback, gained tough yardage with his hard-nose style. A severe injury kept George Hiou on the sidelines a majority of the season. Steve Gal- lant handled the backup Qb job as one of his many roles . This year ' s Field Hockey team was the most successful team at PVMHS. The team compiled an impressive 13-2-1 record which brought them to the quarter-final round of the state tournament . The team lost to Woburn in overtime , 2 - 1 . Woburn went on to win the state title. The team ' s success can be attributed to several factors: the leadership of the Co- Captains Jeanne Hallinan and Jo-Anne Splaine; the experience of the seniors; and the ex- ceptional skill and depth of the juniors . Senior Co- Captain Jeanne Hallinan, Greater Boston League all star, had 19 goals and 14 assists. Jeanne was chosen most valuable player. Other valuable players were Co-Captain Jo-Anne Splaine and Stephanie Smith, Ellen Nager on defense, and goal- keeper Julie Harrington. Juniors chosen to the GBL All-Star Team were Michele Kravchuck (2 goals 14 assists) , Sheila Markham (8 goals 10 assists), and Elaine Sanger (4 goals 10 assists). The other members of this outstanding team whose participation was equally important were: Nancy Bergin, Jill Ventola, Pat Cirinna, and Mary Duff, and defensively, Terri Eager, Maureen Fitzsimmons, Chris Jones, and Lori Kelso. Jeanne Hallinan got three hat tricks this season. Nancy Bergin and Sheila Markham got one each. The team did so well because all performed their parts equally. Forty-nine goals were scored by the team for the season; nine shut outs were recorded and six goals scored against. This year ' s Soccer team had an unfortunate season, due to injuries and academic casualties. The team had a record of five wins and eight losses. The senior starters on the forward line were: John Barrows, George Birmbas, Eddie Morais, Rick Isles (cap- tain), Mark Ruddock (captain), Paul Clifford, Roy Zallis and Peter Noyes. John Barrows had a fantistic year; he was awarded Most Valuable Player, and al- most broke the record for the most goals in one season . He scored just three fewer goals than the record. Mark Ruddock was a top fullback who showed much aggressiveness. He was given the Unsung Hero award. You found my nickel ! You ' ve come a long way, Baby! 1 get a kick out of you. Excedrine Headache Number 49 She said WHAT?? The girls x- country team dominated every meet, wining the GBL, Northern Area, Division I and State Championships . They have the unique distinction of being the first team, in any sport, to bring a state championship title to Peabody. The team ' s state championship was led by Lesley and Lisa Welch, Fran Cronin, Cathy Carnes, and Dianne Fisher. Much credit for helping the team to capture the state championship title goes to the great back up efforts of Gerianne Cotreau, Ellen Donlon, Arlene Thibodeau, and Karen Whippen. Departing seniors of this year ' s squad are: Gerianne Cotreau, Arlene Thibo- deau, and Cathy Carnes. The boys also had a very good year in Cross Country . Fernando Braz won everything in sight , including Division I State Championship and State Championship (the first time an underclassman won all state meets.) The team was young, but returning veterans Doug Quintal, Gary Leavitt (co-captain), Mike Quinlan (co-captain), who was out part of the season with an injury , helped him bring the team along . The team did not lose any meets all season. Fernando Braz and Lesley Welch were state champions. Fernando, Lesley and Lisa Welch, and Fran Cronin, were Globe All Scholastic for Cross Country. Mr. Smyrnios was named Coach of the Year. 6KETBFU The 1978-79 Basketball team got off to a rocky start losing 4 out of the first 6 ball- games , although two games were lost by 2 points and the third by 3 points . However , the Tanners began turning the season around with a big win at Medford and reeled off 6 consecutive wins through the middle of the season anticipating the sec- ond round of the Greater Boston League. Peabody was led by Brian Murphy who became only the second player in Pea- body ' s history to score 1000 career points. Mark Savoie, Peter Ellison, and Steve Andre also started for the Tanners and were backed up by seniors Bob Bal- lard, Peter Burns, and Steve Batsine- las . Rounding out the team were Dave Mooka, Vinnie Harris, Geoff Less, Paul Cormier, and sophomore Mike White. low 1: S. Andre, Co-Capt. B. Murphy, Co-Capt. M. Savoie, and D. Mooka. Row 2: M. White, Z. The Peabody High Indoor Track Team had a very suc- cessful season this year with an overall meet record of 7-1. Before the loss, Peabody had won 15 straight, dating back to the 1978 season. Peabody also won the very prestigious Metheun Invitational to add another trophy to the award case . The team captains this year were Sean Connors , Jim Trager and George Hiou . George had to sit out the sea - son due to a severe football injury. School records were established this year by Doug Quintal in the 1000 - 2:21.4 and junior Fernando Braz in the 2 mile - 9:25.1. T op performers during the season were : Seniors , Elli - ot Fixler and Charlie Desrocher - High Hurdles : Seniors Mark Gillespie and John Lane - Dash; Junior Bruce Mac- Gregor and Senior Jim Trager - 300; Seniors Sean Con- nors and Scott Wlasuk - 600 ; Senior Doug Quintal and Junior Rick Petrocionne - 1000; Junior Tony LaRosa and Sophomore Mark Sheridan in the mile ; Junior Fernando Braz and Senior Gary Leavitt in the 2 mile ; Sean Connors and Junior Greg Cushing - High Jump ; and Seniors Marty Michelman, Mark Gillespie , and John Lane - Shot Put. Seniors Roy Zalis and Dave Wall dominated the freestyle sprinting events, qualifying for the Eastern High School Championship in the fifty yard freestyle. Seniors Mike Patton, and Captain Peter Sklivas had command in freestyle- Mike in the 500 yard free and Peter in the 100 yard breaststroke. Junior Glenn Riley, superstar long- distance swimmer, has surprised the team as a 100 yard backstroker, qualifying for the Eastern Championships. Glenn Riley, sophomores Sean Lantry and Jim Francis and Roy Zalis represented the Tanners in the 200 Medley Re- lay. Dave Wall, Roy Zalis and juniors Paul Smith and Glenn Riley combined in the 400 freestyle relay . Both teams were represented at the Eastern Championships. As a team, we ' ve seen great improvement this season. Our driving has come a long way since last year thanks to the addition of our new coach Ms. Paula Keating, who has done an outstanding job. We also have secured more pool time at the Village Green allowing for longer practices and more intensive training. Next season the Tanners will have the advantage of a young team. We are only losing eight seniors; the majority of our swimmers this season are sophomores. We are hoping for a large response at try- outs, November 1979. 53 FOOTBALL CHEERLEADERS Row 1 : Donna , Louise , Shari (co-capt. ) , Janice ( co - capt. ) , Mary, Gab- rielleRow2: Cheryl, Stacey, Lori, Tricia, Jennifer, Mary Ellen, Karen, Donna, Diane Manning ( advisor) . We watched a peanut farmer become President, and we remem- ber when Mother Nature took hold of our lives as she showered us with 27 inches of snow in 24 hours . We also stood back in awe as a to- tally unknown actor came forth with one of the great- est movies of all time. We all marvelled at the fantas- tic ability of a hockey de- fenseman and shook our heads in sympathy when 10 years later bad knees ended his career . Does your mem- ory fail you? Well come along as we relive great moments in our high school. THE LAST OF THE 70’S Peabody, the place in which we have grown, con- tains many memories that will always be special to us . How can we forget the many nights we spent eating and socializing at Land and 1 Sea or the many days we spent walking around the Shopping Center and Liberty Tree Mall. We often saw movies at the many cinemas found in our city and after the movie we often quenched our thirst and hunger by eat- ing either a Big Mac at Mc- Donalds , a roast beef at Bill Bobs or one of Treadwell ' s famous ice cream cones . Many times we settled for all three. As we have changed and grown, so has our city. The new courthouse, the expand- ed library, and the new mall represent the progress our city has made. However much our city changes throughout the years , the Peabody we knew during High School will always be the one we remember. RUSS ICE CREAM I While in high school , we witnessed the coming of two new political lead- ers , Carter and Nixon . Both are very different , yet both share the same hopes and aspirations. Jimmy Carter and Menachem Begin met at Camp David along with Anwar Sadat to dis- cuss plans for a peace treaty in the Middle East . Although we witnessed the coming of the Carter Administra- tion, we also saw the decline of Nixon through the infamous Watergate scan- dal. However, Nixon ' s scandal will not be the only one that we will re - member . We will never forget the controversial trials of Patty Hearst . While world leaders vie for peace on an international level, another dis- pute was settled between Farrah Faw- cett- Majors and the producers of ' ' Charlie ' s Angels . ' ' The result was a new angel for Charlie . Cheryl Ladd replaced the Six Million Dollar Man ' s wife as ' ' the blonde angel. ' ' We also said good-by to a different kind of angel: Mary Tayler Moore and her WJM news team were fired by their new station manager. John Travolta began another trend that is still going strong . He emerged from his role as one. of Gabe Kaplan ' s Sweathogs ' ' to become a disco superstar in ' ' Saturday Night Fever, ' ' His superb dancing , along with the Bee Gee ' s music made a very popular movie . He also danced his way into Olivia Newton John ' s heart with his more recent movie ' ' Grease . Al- though we gained a superstar , John Travolta , we lost one too- the King of Rock and Roll. Elvis Presley ' s death was tragic to many of his grief- strick- en fans . While the public remembered El- vis ' s past, Alex Haley remembered his own . After twelve years ' re - search, Haley produced his best sel- ling book ROOTS . From this book , came ABC ' s mini -series version of ' ' Roots . ' ' This was perhaps the most moving theatrical piece of our time . Just as a book about the past broke all television viewing records , a movie about the future became the number one box office hit . ' ' Star Wars ' ' ' immense popularity gave life to the electronic characters R-2 D-2 and C3PO. We live in a time of change . New and interesting events are happening all the time . We all recall the excitement that took place to celebrate our country ' s 200th birthday . More recently , another exciting birthday took place : Micky Mouse turned fifty. In the midst of our celebra - tions , however , we must say good - bye to old friends . Good - bye to Smokey the Bear who died at the age of twenty -six. Good-bye to the thirteen-cent stamp, the big, gas -hungry cars, andtheV.W. bug. Fair- well to sacchrine and , worst of all, so-long to red m G m ' s. Our good-byes take a more serious note when we recall the many great men we have lost . After tie trauma of the death of Pope Paul VI , the world was once again filled with grief upon the sudden death of Pope John Paul I . The thought of Howard Hughes ' death still lingers on in our minds . We will also remember many controversial issues . The issue of discrimination was debated during the Bakke case . L Controversy on social issues continued with the execution of Gary Gilmore who had im- patiently awaited the courts ' decision on whether capital punishment would be en- forced . Another long awaited de- cision was whether or not the Equal Rights Ammendment would be approved . As yet , this has not occured . Many important sports events took place over the past three years . A young Russian gym- nast, Nadi Communichi, de- lighted the world with her per- fect scores at the 1976 Olym- pics . The Red Sox also fired local imagination in their bid for a slot in the World Series . Unfortunately, the Red Sox gave up their chance to par- ticipate in this event and the Yankees went on to beat the Dodgers . Best wishes to the Bruins ' Bobby Orr and the Cel- tics ' John Halvicheck, both of whom have retired. Congratu- lations to Dave Cowens who be - came player coach for the Cel- tics. Congratulations to us all for surviving the blizzard of ' ' 78 ' ' and conserving energy during a crisis . HERE LIES OUR BELOVED BIG CAR-. IT RAN OUT OF CAS Due to advancing scientific progress , such crises may be eliminated in the future .Tech- nology has enabled us to pro- duce a normal healthy baby girl named Louise Brown from a test tube . Louise is only one example of other technological advances to come . These com- ing advances could consist of anything from cloning a human being to living on Mars . So, al- ways hold on to your dreams , for although they may seem impossible now, in future years they may come true . Many fads have come and gone within the past four years. On our feet we ' ve worn everything from clogs to ballet slippers . Our heads have been decorated with hats, perms, bandanas, Dorothy Hamill wedges ' ' , and weak imi- tations of ' ' Farrah Fawcett flips. ' ' As the girls are discoing in their ' ' Annie Hall clothes ' ' their dance partners ' ' boogie ' ' in their Chinese -collared shirts and their ' ' John Travolta haircuts. ' ' For rock and roll fans , the fashionable way to go to concerts is in the back of a soup- ed -up van. On our more athletic days , we have jogging , tennis , fris - bees, and soccer. Among the in- tellectual crowd, electronic games have been the rage , while relaxing with a drink at home has been everybody ' s favorite pas- time . 177 Do You Remember: Higgins -Kennedy rivalry Variety Shows in Junior High Junior high dances Getting your braces off Your first real love Your first beer Sitting in the field house the first day of high school Being scared of Seniors Getting lost while looking for your classes Sitting in the open studies Agony of getting your license Cheerleader tryouts Selling, buying, and eating M M ' s Eating pizza at Papa John ' s Praying for snow days Freezing at football games Waking up for SAT ' s Typing fff space Mini ' s, Midi ' s, and Maxi ' s The Peace sign Dodging Unit Directors Dancing to the Great Estate Counting the days to Vacatio Cramming for finals Not going to gym Getting to school late Not partying on the ski trips Thanking God it was Friday Trying to find a fake I.D. We close our windows , but we do not forget . We do not close our hearts to those we have known and cared for. We do care .
