Benjamin Franklin THE META What is time? The shadow on the dial, the striking of the clock, the running of the sand, day and night, summer and winter, months, years, centuries-- these are but arbitrary and out- ward signs, the measure of Time, not Time itself. Time is the life of the soul. H.W. Longfellow _ir — T ime changes many things . The friendship of youth is one of them. Some rela- tionships will be strength- ened, some will fade but all will be somehow af- fected. The world which up to now, has been for many one small town, will suddenly be expanded. Wk K m  Travel, if you must, leave your home and find your highway, ride the desert lands and mountain tops. Do what you want, but don ' t forget what you have been, because what you are and what you will be cannot be separated from what you were before your travels began. i ■j j ( ‘ l l it. i 1 H jj £f P u v T. .  v DEDICATION Mr. Ashby, Mr. Iipman, Mr. Guarente, Miss O ' Neill, Mrs. Block, Miss Costello Senior year is a time of many decisions and conflicts. The future holds a multitude of alternatives -- college, work, raising a family. With time, our ambitions have changed; we have gained a more realistic outlook on life. After graduation, as we venture into the real world we will carry with us the advice of these seven dedicated individuals, who throughout the years have helped us to decide the direction that our futures will take. For their wisdom, their advice, and their ability to exhibit concern for the needs of all students, we, the class of 1978, dedicate the 1978 Meta to our Guidance Counselors, with our deepest gratitude. 18 Dear Members of the Class of 1978, May I extend my sincere congratulations to you upon your graduation from Peabody Vet- erans Memorial High School. You have all seen athletes at times play over their heads. Why? Because of the challenge and its acceptance. Those of us who count struggle as a blessing will ultimately reap the greater rewards of life. I hope your education here has led you to the realization that every mistake, every fault, every difficulty conquered, becomes a stepping stone to better and high- er th ings. It is through such experiences that all who have ever made life worth living have achieved success. To do the right thing at the right time in the right way; to do things better than they have ever been done before; to strive to the best of your ability, and to be satisfied with nothing less than perfection - these are the goals that will lead you to a full and rewarding life. May your future years be filled with health and happiness. Sincerely, William A Welch 19 ADMINISTRATION ROBERT IRELAND ROY FARIA 20 WILLIAM A. The 1977 edition of the Peabody High football Tanners Concluded the sea- son with a fine 7-3 record to mark the seventh consecutive winning season for the Blue and White. Once again the Tanners displayed a hard running offense and a tough and quick defense to outscore their opponents by a 203-62 margin. Hampered by some early season illness and nagging injuries the club suffered two early losses (6-12 in overtime to Somerville and 7-14 to GBL champs Ar- lington) sandwiched around a 20-0 whitewashing of a good Lowell club. Follow- ing the Arlingt on loss the team put together a string of six victories before fall- ing 12-10 on Thanksgiving Day to Northeastern Conference Champs Saugus. Easily the most exciting game was the contest against Medford which saw the Tanners fight back from a third quarter deficit of 18-7 to capture a well earned 25-18 victory. The Blue and White were able to cross the opposition goal line in every game on defense recorded five shutouts. Playing major roles in the success of the team were seniors John Goulos, Ron Supino, Keith Whooley, Mark Nalesnik, Bob Sullivan, Bill Carey, Tom Colarus- so, Mark Powers, Ken Smith, Tom Trogler and Tom Lane. All of the seniors who saw action during the season made a contribution to the team ' s success and helped to carry on for another year the finest tradition of winning football in the state of Massachusetts. 1977 Record Somerville 6-12 Lowell 20- 0 Arlington 7-14 Malden 23- 0 Everett 29- 0 Chelsea 35- 0 Medford 25-18 Revere 14- 0 Haverhill 34- 6 Saugus 10-12 This years soccer team under first year coach Al Nunes reached unprecict- able heights sharing the Greater Boston League Championship with Arlington. It was a year in which a seven win season would have been much appreciated and considered respectable. However nine wins, one loss, and four ties was more than anyone expected. Coach Al Nunes inspired his team so that with any share of the breaks could have finished the year undefeated and the sole champion in a tough Greater Boston League. One unexpected loss to the Revere team cost them the title but a determined classy group of athletes never quit . They displayed traits that endeared them to the student body and fans throughout the city. The following seniors spear-headed the attack this year and made many be- lievers that soccer is here to stay as a popular spectator sport. They are: Fred Harris, Larry Kraviyz, Trevor Pigott, Howard Nager, Richard McCarthy, Daryl Madden, and Gary Suave. Mats Christensson, a student from Sweden, was a welcome addition to this year ' s team and contributed much to its success. The Girls Cross Country Team although small-forty two in number-com- pleted its first season at PVMHS undefeated. The girls competed with other girls in dual meet competition in the GBL at Everett, Somerville, Medford, Haver- hill, and Arlington. In championship competition: Northern Area Championship held at Wilming- ton: Fran Cronan, 4th, Cathy Carnes, 5th, Rachel Coombs, 17th, and Arlene Thibodeau, 49th. State class meet was held at Franklin Park, Fran Cronan 4th, Cathy Carnes 12th, and Arlene Thibodeau 108th. Finally, Mass. State Finals at Gardner Mass, Fran Cronan 5th, Cathy Carnes 22nd, time: 18:12 . . . Members of the team are Rachel Coombs, Captain, Cathy Carnes, Geri-Ann Cotreau, Arlene Thibodeau, Patti Delaney, and Frannie Cronan. Prospects look great for the 1978 season with much talent coming up from the junior high. The field hockey team turned in their second most successful season ever this year, 8-3-1, which quali- fied them for the states. The seniors we will be losing have been our nucleus for the past two years. They were very talented and worked well together, were aggressive and knew how to motivate each other. Departing, via graduation from this year ' s state tourney team are forwards Ellen Goldman, Robin Zucker- man, Eileen Spaline, Sue Romei, and Pam Shahanian; links Cocaptain Sue Kravchuk and GBL All Star Shauna O ' Malley; and on defense Chris Cu- sack and Kerry Guinee, while Co- captain Mary Marengi vacates the goal. Returning is sophomore Michelle Kravchuk- a GBL All Star, Jeanne Hallinan, Stephanie Smith, Nancy Bergen, and Chris Jones, who played regularly this season. In addition the whole JV team who went undefeated 12-0 this year. The cross country team after a slow start ended up with a win- ning record of 5-3. The team ' s inexperience and injuries hurt early in the year, but with the return of junior Mike Lozeau the team found the winning combination. Top performers were: Seniors Cap- tain Frank Keating, Elvis Perez, Bill Wignall, and Alan Brennan; Juniors Mike Lozeau, Gary Lea- vitt, and; Sophomores Fernando Braz, Bill Rundlett, and Rick Petroccione The highlight of the season was Braz ' s third place finish in the Division I State Champion- ship and his winning performance in the Division I Sophomore State Meet. Braz also established a PHS course record of 13:28. 65 SWIM TEAM Row 1; J. Konevalchek, D.J. Mednick, J. Hoague, R. Monahan, P. Smith, A. Harris, P. Bartkiewitz. Row 2j Coach L. Marengi, S. This year was only the second season for the co-ed swim team but age did not prove to be a handicap; we emerge as tough competitors. We finished with a 4-8 record. During the season we had several outstand- ing performances. All of the 1976-77 P.V.M.H.S. swimming records were broken by the fourth meet into the season. Co-captain Maureen Sullivan set a new record in the 500 yard freestyle with an impressive time of 5:51.4 while co- captain John Cahill has captured six individual records. New records were set in the 400 freestyle relay with a co-captain combination of Maureen Sullivan and John Cahill, Senior Steve Skilvas and Junior Ray Zalis. Senior Steve Sklivas also set his own record in the lOOyard breast stroke at a time of 1:12.2. Although not record holders, we have several improved swimmers and divers. Richard Tepfer managed to knock 13 seconds off his time in the 100 yard fly and Ken Milender came down a big nine seconds in the 100 yard breast stroke. Robin Monohan and Jill Konovalchik both improved on the diving board to put points on the P.V.M.H.S. scoreboard. Clark Beaudry, Pat Bartkiewicz and Jim Travers all improved in the 50 yard yard free-style. Junior Peter Sklivas brought his time in the 200 yard free-style while Eric Boutiette, also a junior, improved in the 500 yard free-style. 67 WINTER TRACK PtABOCy — UMIIOI TnnV’ Ti ' inv Jjt i nnnV Row 1; R. Smyrnois The Indoor Track Team started off the season with a question mark as they had lost a con- siderable amount of talent to graduation and had to build the team around a small returning nucleus. It started as an inexperienced team that became stronger as the season progressed and finished as one of the finest teams in Peabody track history, winning the Greater Boston League championship with an 8-0 season and climaxing the league season with the all -League Championship. Outstanding performers for the team were seniors: Jim Pruss, ranked second in the all Peabody list with a 5. 9 time in the 45 yard High Hurdles; Gary Suave, tied for top ranking in the All list with a 6 ' 3 high jump; Scott Zunick, ranked second in the All list with a 50 ' 8 throw; Trevor Pigott, ranked third in the all Peabody list with a 5. 7 in the 50 yard dash; also Fernando Tomaz, High Hurdles; Craig Olswang- 600; Elvis Perez- 1000; Allen Brennan- mile; Bill Carey, shotput; Tom Holleran- 600; Bill Wignall-mile; Dave Fabrizio, high jump; Joe DiThomas- 1000; Wally Sorenson, high jump; and Richard Disler, shotput. r 68 Row one: B.Romanski, M. Although relatively young, the Tanners have shown good bal- ance and are near the top of the league statistically in both most goals scored and fewest goals allowed. The Senior members of the team are Tri-Capts. Keith Wool- ey, Tom LeBlanc, and Frank Keating. Along with Mark Nales- nik, Jerry Markham, and Bob Maguire. The Juniors on the squad include: Goalies Bob Romanski, and Rick Isles, Glen Grayton, Paul Manos, Willy Hyde, Paul Clifford, Pete Gallagher, Dan Walsh, Jim Gill, and Mark Ruddock. The only Sophomore on the team is Ray Jacques. The team is coached by George Kinnaly, and Paul Downey. HOCKEY I GIRLS BASKETBALL eo Top left to rightrj. V. Coach Julia Macrinotis, J.Hallinan, S. Some of the highlights of the season include defeating a strong Arlington team twice and very nearly upsetting undefeated Haverhill. Early in the season, the Peabody girls found themselves getting behind in the first half of games and then with great effort fighting back to win a few close games. At this point in the season the team is playing good basketball in all four quarters of ev- ery game and hopes to finish the season strong. 4 Peabody 49 Revere 27 Haverhill 40 Peabody 34 Peabody 34 Arlington 33 Somerville 52 Peabody 46 Peabody 68 Chelsea 33 Medford 45 Peabody 40 Peabody 50 Everett 28 Malden 55 Peabody 44 72 GYMNASTICS Row Is S. The underwater basketweaving team did a fine job maintaining their G.B.L. Championship title with an undefeated 8-0 record. The team suffered only a few casualties such as broken fingers and pulled fin muscles. The team had a fantastic season says coach Joe ' Moby ' Toby. They swam with great moves and made their hands move in the clutch. Con- gratulations are in order for GaryTad- pole, the star fish on the team. He gave 10096 effort all the time. The star for the defensive line was Goldie Fish. She stopped many stitches and made incredible plays. ] Stage Band Rear 1-r Dave Conway, Greg Hunt, Jim Begin, Brian Shea, Dana John- son, Jim Gordon, Richard Defilippo Front Pam Coombs, Steve Oste r, Joe Silva, Tim Eagar. Assassination Presentation i Time fleet eth on, youth soon is gone, Naught earthly may abide; Life seemeth fast, but may not last- It runs as runs the tide. C. G. Leland In memory of Russell Otenti Daniel Collins The Tide Rises, the Tide Falls The tide rises, the tide falls, The twilight darkens, the curlew calls; Along the sea sands damp and brown The traveler hastens toward the town, And the tide rises, the tide falls. Darkness settles on roofs and walls. But the sea, the sea in the darkness calls; The little waves, with their soft white hands, Efface the footprints in the sands. And the tide rises, the tide falls. The morning breaks; the steeds in their stalls Stamp and neigh as the hostler calls; The day returns, but nevermore Returns the traveler to the shore, And the tide rises, the tide falls. The good times are gone forever But you my friend will always be here. And we shall laugh together for all of the years. We were strangers when we started as children, And we played and we fought. We grew and we learned, We cried and we laughed And now we are friends only to become once more Strangers and children In a world in which we shall start again. Look towards tomorrow. But cherish today. For tomorrow will only hold memories Of the times we spent together. Today. SILVER PATRONS BERNICE AND HAL BORNSTEIN FAMILY MR. AND MRS. T. BARTKIEWICZ CHARLES N. CHESLEY MR. FOR EVERYTHING ITS SEASON, and for every activity under heaven its time: a time to be born and a time to die; a time .to plant and a time to uproot; a time to kill and a time to heal; a time to pull down and a time to build up; a time to weep and a time to laugh; a time for mourning and a time for dancing; a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them; a time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing; a time to seek and a time to lose; a time to keep and a time to throw away; a time to tear and a time to mend; a time for silence and a time for speech; a time to love and a time to hate; a time for war and a time for peace. Ecclesiastes-3 The Road Not Taken Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, And sorry I could not travel both And be one traveler, long I stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth Then took the other, as just as fair, And having perhaps the better claim, Because it was grassy and wanted wear Though as for that the passing there Had worn them really about the same, And both that morning equally lay In leaves no step had trodden black. Oh, I kept the first for another day! Yet knowing how way leads on to way, I doubted if I should ever come back. I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I- I took the one less traveled by And that has made all the difference. Robert Frost
