For his ability to apply the wisdom of age to the many varied problems of youth; For his untiring efforts on behalf of that school of which he was, and still is, so much a part; For his years of dedicated service to the students of Peabody High School as educator, administrator and friend — We, the graduating class of 1975 gratefully dedicate our yearbook to Arthur V. Johnson 18 My dear Graduates: On this happy occasion of your graduation, I extend to you my sincere con- gratulations, thank you for your excellent cooperation during the past three years, and wish each of you a life that is rewarding and blessed with health and happiness. Your high school days have been provocative ones with the controversial Vietnam War and the national ills such as the energy crisis, food shortages, in- flationary living, unemployment, and unfortunately, a diminishing of spiritual values that followed it. A troubled world had a direct effect on your school life and, while some student bodies were not reacting responsibly to existing con- ditions, you admirably accepted the challenge and undertook the resulting res- ponsibilities in mature-like fashion. I am proud of you as a graduating class, and 1 know that in your present exal- tation you are aware that now, an even more challenging era presents itself, and upon your generation descends the solemn responsibility of alleviating your country and the world of their ills and the strident dissonance and discord so prevalent today. It is a serious but not frightening challenge that will require the constant utili- zation of your intelligence, courage, and a steadfastness in your determination to make this world of ours a better place in which to live for all its inhabitants of whatsoever creed, color, or origin. I am confident that your efforts in years to come will add to my existing pride in and respect for the Class of 1975. Sincerely, Pr incipal 19 ROBERT IRELAND WILLIAM A. Now that your years of education and training with us have ended, the most important consideration is what contributions you, as individuals, can make to improve the world and better the conditions of the people who live in it. I sin- cerely hope that these past years, spent in your respective classrooms and shops, have prepared you to make your contributions, and have given you the wisdom and experience necessary for your future. On behalf of the faculty and staff, 1 wish you much success and happiness in all your future endeavors. Sincerely, 108 MR. JOHN CELATA MR. SALVATORE CAUSI MR. HOWARD COLLYER MRS. LOUISE DELCOLLE MR. Soccer 1974 The varsity soccer team had its most successful season ever compiling a 7-7-1 record overall and 7-6-1 for the first year in the Greater Boston League. Led by co-captains Bill Newell and Dan Bowman, the Tanners got off to a slow start losing their first three games, but bounced back to win 7 of the remaining 12 games. This year’s success was due primarily to the tremendous improvement in play of the seniors Scott Berger, Dan Bowman, Bill Newell, Rich Reeves, Don Beckett, Frank Splain, and Bill Hallinan; all contributed heavily to the team’s success. Three- year veteran Tom Page was a standout in goal all season. A good team needs a strong bench and the Tanners had it this year with such reliable men as Kip Church, Don Maida, Paul Cohen, Tom Diamond, Rich Israelson, Bob Bernstein and Jim Palleschi, who could always be de- pended upon to perform well. The Tanners were led by the running of senior John Diefenbach, who ran for over 1200 yards, while scoring more than 100 points. Also bolstering the Peabody offense were A1 Colarusso, Ed Kolhonen, Chris Heim and blocking back Mark Madruga. Holding down the end poisitions were Kevin McCarthy and Brian D’Ambrosio. Operating out of the quarterback slot was senior Peter Kitsakos who proved to be a fine outside runner as well as an accurate passer. Back- ing him up was the able Paul Marci. Leading the charge from the line were senior tackles Larry Archis and Tommy Vose and dependable center Mike Cronin. Also making ma- jor contributions to the team’s success were Jeff Seaman, Dave Cronin, Don Keller, Dave Danish and Ken Hoyle among others. Adding to the versatility of the club was the talented toe of kicking specialist Jose Silva. The 1974 Tanners suffered a variety of injuries, including eariy season mishaps to linebackers Tommy Thorne and Mike Lancaster, as well as later injuries to Ed Kolhonen, A1 Collarusso, and Bill LeBel. Although the defense was weakened by these losses, many younger players, such as Rich LeBlanc, Ed Arsenalt, and Buddy Yeo filled in admirably. The Tanners struggled through a difficult Greater Boston League schedule for the first time. Captain Jack Bergin and Andy Argen- bright distinguished themselves in league play. Tom Hart, Frank Splaine, Tom Houlden, Scott Lutch, Mark Vainas, and Brian D’Ambrosio also played well. The prospects for next year look extremely bright with Argenbright, Jeff Linehan, Bob Kane, Neil Barry, Art Tsionis, Wayne Palmieri, Larry Leavitt, Don DiLiberto, Nick Smyrnios, and John Chigas returning to the varsity. 126 Cross Country ROW ONE L. The Tanners were led by the efforts of senior captain Phil Sheridan who emerged as one of the North Shore’s top performers. Also bolstering the Peabody club were juniors John Bird and Bruce Allison, both of whom performed very well throughout the entire season. Other steady performers for the Blue and White were Chris Tighe, Scott O’Brien, Donny Grennan, John Brennan, Peter Schubert and Bob Chumack. The Tanners topped off their season with a sixth place finish in the Eastern Mass. Cross Coun- try Class A Championships. Winter Track TOP ROW: P. Sheridan, D. Maclean, J, Diefenbach, K. Hoyle, T. Vose. BOTTOM ROW: D. Essancy, C. Greene, P. Kitsakos, E. Kolhonen. Outstanding seniors Cal Greene (co-captain), John Diefenbach (co-captain), Peter Kitsakos (co-captain) and Dave Maclean played an im- portant role for the Tanners in obtaining the Greater Boston Indoor Track Championship, with an undefeated season of 10-0-0. The Tan- ners were also the Massachusetts HS Northern Area Indoor Track Champions. Five PHS records were set this year by Cal Greene with a record high jump, John Diefen- bach in the 45 yd. high hurdles, Dave Maclean setting records for the 300 yd and the 50 yd dash, and Ken Hoyle setting the shot put record. Other team members with high performance were Phil Sheridan and Bob Chumack in middle distance, Ed Kolhonen and Mark Marino as sprinters, Dave Essancy and Scott Evans on the high jump, Tom Vose and Dave Cronin throw- ing the shot put and Mike Judge on the hurdles. 130 Hockey ROW 1: J. ROW 3: K. Gill, E. Sousa, T. Cullen, J. Sheehan, H. Coito, T. Hallinan, P. O’Leary. Propelled by the scoring efforts of senior linemates Ed Sousa, Danny Bowman and Bobby McKenzie the Peabody High hockey team found themselves with an 11-0-2 mark in the Greater Boston League. The Tan- ners, hoping to take the league championship in their first year of GBL com- petition, were one of the top rated teams in the state. Senior goaltenders Mike Cronin and Jeff Richards were doing a nice job 0 of protecting the Tanner net as a young but tough defense was playing havoc with the opposition. Other seniors who were making major contri- butions to the team’s success were Donny Beck- et, Herbie Sawyer, Jimmy Thibideau, Kenny Gill and Don Maida. Other team members include Tommy Cullen, Tommy Hallinan, Henry Coito, Jackie Shee- han, Steve Langley, Bobby Grayton, Dean Lia- cos, and Steve Mario. 132 Girls Basketball L. TO R.: Chris Newhall, Carol Doherty, Debbie Terenzoni, Anne Noone, Sue Mapes. 2ND ROW: Coach Loraine Benoit, Robin Chandler, Sue Rae, Joanne Sheehan, Kelly Daly, Kathy Mahalaris. The girls basketball team is finding it very difficult com- peting in it’s first year in the Greater Boston League. Plagued with injuries and caught in a rebuilding year, the team compiled only a 1-1 1 record. However, the girls, led by captain Debbie Terenzoni, showed much potential. The games were always exciting, thanks to the help of high scorers Debbie Terenzoni and Carol Doherty. Much impetus was given to the team by players Chris Newhall, Sue Mapes, Anne Noone, Robin Chandler. Sue Rae, Joanne Sheehan and Kathy Mahalaris. 134 Gymnastics FIRST ROW: A. Wen, P. Michaud, D. The team has many seniors who along with the ju- niors and sophomores have maintained a high level of difficulty on the balance beam, the uneven parallel bars, floor exercise and vaulting. The team is hopeful of sending several girls to the State girls gymnastic competition. Field Hockey L. TO R: B. Bolton, M. Soraghan, R. Hogan, M. McOsker, A. Noone, C. Doherty, K. Peterson, L. The Tanner field hockey team compiled its first winning season in the three years that Peabody has had a program. They recorded a 7-2-1 league record which put them second in the league standings. The forward line scored a total of twenty-three goals for the season, and the defense had four shut outs. Highlights of the season included the two Arlington games in which Peabody came back in the second game to tie first placed Arlington, 1-1, after losing a squeaker 3-2 in the first game. They also knocked Haver- hill out of second place with a 2-1 win, and tied tournament contenders Bishop Fenwick 3-3. Music Guild L. TO R: D. Kennedy, K. Hetherington, C. McCauly, A. Johnson, L. The 1974 META gave one last nostalgic look back to those customs and traditions which tied it to the past; the 1975 META looks forward to the fu- ture and to change. But, there remains one tradition which no yearbook can ever successfully ignore, and hence the purpose of the META remains that of providing the graduate with a lasting legacy of his years at Peabody High. The META staff has worked long hours to produce a yearbook which reflects the change that is all around us. It is a fact of life that nothing is changing as fast as change itself, and we have tried, often with great success, to capture the various elements of this change. For, while graduation is the end of an experience that will never come a gain, it is also a beginning, and a great, ever-moving world awaits all who dare to challenge it. The META hopefully will help the graduate relive the highlights of his high school career, but will remind him also to turn his eye to the future and examine the many varied paths which await him. High school life is many things to many people, and a yearbook can present only selected elements of this experience. A photographer captures all that he can, given the limitations of the roving eye of a camera: memories must serve to fill in the rest. The META staff has tried to present a total picture of all that was Peabody High for the Class of 1975; we hope that our efforts have been successful. For, when all is said and done, when you are old and grey, and sitting by the fire, a yearbook may be the only evidence you have that you were once young. The yearbook staff would like to give special thanks to Elizabeth Lynch and Henry Morriss for their help and guidance throughout the year.
