My dear Graduates: On this happy occasion of your gradation, I extend to the class of 1974. my congratulations. Graduation from high school marks the termination of a most important cycle in the progress of your life, but simultaneously opens a new and often more challenging era. You are the first class in many to have had a year in which your country was not at war, but you are aware that people are not afford- ed the opportunity to rejoice in the peace and happiness that should ensue. Instead our country encounters ecological problems, energy crises, food shortage, infiationary living, and unfortunately, a diminishing of spiritual values. These are the ills from which we suffer, the cure of which is the challenge confronting your generation. It is a serious but not frighten- ing challenge that will demand an intelligent understanding of the necessity of spiritual values, a prudent establishing of priorities, and the determination and perserverance to improve the standard of living for all people and resultantly make this world a better place in which to live. 1 have the greatest confidence that you will intelligently face this challenge and in your dedication to your country and your fellow man, your efforts will bring about a medical, health, scientific and social era of progress in which people live peacefully and happily. May your future be rich and rewarding a nd blessed with health and happiness. Sincerely, Principal 4 Arthur V. Johnson Administration John Walsh Richard Codair Robert Ireland William A. The 1973 Soccer Team had its best season in its three-year history, (3-9-3). This improvement was based largely upon the greater experience of the team; the majority of the team members were seniors who had been with the team since its first season. Paul Lane, Gary Sowyrda, and Tom Doran performed extremely well in their respec- tive positions. And the efforts of seniors Kevin Mulherin, Dan Whelan, Chris Quinn, Gary Ruddock, Mike Bar- ry, Will Diamond, Alan Spatrick, and Risty Kalivas combined with those of the juniors and sophomores and the fine coaching of Bob Simons to produce a most rewarding season for the soccer team . However, physical ability alone is not the only support needed by a team to achieve its goals. Fans play a large part in any sport, and the number of specta- tors at the Peabody games, as well as the popularity of the sport seems to be on the in- crease. Due to this greater interest in soc- cer, the team is look- ing forward to a better team and season each year. no Football ■6. ' ' W ROW 1: CAP! MATTY FUNCHION, CAPT. LARRY JONES. FOOTBALL The Peabody High football team gave its fan an- other thrilling season this year by winning 7 games, tying 1, and losing 1 . However, to achieve a goal such as this, requires perseverence, persistence and self-discipline on the part of every player on the team. But football is not only a show sport or status game as some seem to think. Through football, a student can learn that teamwork is the ultimate test in tolerance. It is a game played, in one form or another, by over a million young Americans, a game uninhibited by so- cial barriers. It is a game that requires exhaustive hard work starting early in the season. 1 1 is a game of violent body contact that demands a personal disci- pline seldom found in our modern life. The whole team, along with the exceptional coaching staff, is to be rewarded for their outstanding effort, and we hope for another banner year in 1 974. Also, a new policy was introduced this year: night football. Four games were played under the lights, and proved to be very popular with the students and fans. We hope this policy will be continued for the 1 974 season. Salem-Peabody Pep Rally Cross Country L TO R. 1st ROW: Bruce Allison. Phil Sheraton. One of the most familiar fall sights at P.V.M.H.S. is the afternoon parade of blue-suited runners circling and circling the vicinity of the high school, oblivious to the stares of passersby, intent upon getting themselves into condition for the track seasons. Track is a year-round activity at P.V.M.H.S. and the 1973 Peabody High Cross-Country team started it distinguishing themselves by compiling a 5-2 mark. The Tanners were led by the efforts of Phil Sheridan and Mark Gatti. Also making ma- jor contributions to the club were seniors Ron Ker- ble. Billy Gagne, and sophomores John Bird and Bruce Allison. Tommy Hart, Walter Kwiecinski, Jack Bergin. .. ,v - -min MlH ' ' ' The 1973-74 Peabody High School basketball team continued in the successful tradition of the teams of the previous two years. Three starters returned from the 1972-73 team. Captain Rich Tucker, Ed Goff, and Rich Sims, Tucker lead- ing his team as a bonafide all-scholastic choice. Larry Jones and A1 Guido also made up this year ' s starting team, with Walter Kwiecinski and Tony Sims playing as the top two reserves. Bill Murphy, Tom Leonard, and Steve Kenny were the other able seniors on the team, with Jack Bergin and Tom Hart the only lettermen returning for next year. The junior varsity, which will make up the nucleus of next year’s squad, was also successful. Coach Weitzman will be counting heavily on the improvement of Bob Kane, Jeff Linehan, Andy Argenbright, Kevin Spencer, and Scott Lutch. •r - ■mi amw BmwffiyfT Wiw pEWW W k s 3,v 1 ' ,y ' 1 L Hr iSHth 1 i , Jnk I Jk 1 ywm «5lv 0LJ jwH y JyW . i Nu m| J jg r Jr, 10 ■ m.V i FW m V ' ■ - 1 IffiBU Winter Track L. A loss to Haverhill ended the Tanners’ dual meet victory streak at 25, one of the longest winning streaks in the school’s history. In the high hurdles the Tanners were led by Frank Schattner and John Diefenbach. Gary DeStefano, Dave MacLean and Ed Kolhonen provided the Blue and White with one of the best sprint teams in the state. In the intermediate races, the efforts of Gary Wolovick, Mike Mapes, Ron Kerble and Jeff Sypole proved fruitful and Mark Gatti, Phil Sheridan, Billy Gagne and John Bird carried the colors of the Blue and White in the distance events. In the field events Frank Schattner (high jump) and Matt Func’nion (shot put) provided most of the thrills. The 1973-74 indoor season also saw the Tanners with the best relay team in the state as Frank Schattner, Gary De- Stefano, Dave MacLean and Ed Kolhonen had little trouble in dominating relay competition. The record and accomplishments of the Tanners’ track program is a reflection on the desire and determination of the boys and of their coaches George Smyrnios and Dick Makela. 120 ROW 1 . The 1973-74 Peabody High hockey team compiled a 21-1-3 Record. In addition, the Tanners were one of the top rated teams in Eastern Mass. The Tanners were led by the high scoring junior line of Danny Bowman, Eddie Sousa, and Bob McKensie. The first line was comprised of rugged competitors John Leonard and Kevin Mulherin with Mike Pierce, Ed Jackson, and Henry Coito taking turns skating with them. Donny Beckett, Herbie Sawyer, Tommy Cullen, and Jimmy Thibedeau also skated effectively for the High Flying Tanners. Defensively the Blue and White were led by Seniors Gary Ruddock, and Donnv Boyle, Juniors Billy Newell and Kenny Gill and Sophomores Bob Grayton and Dean Liacos. Minding the nets were Juniors Mike Cronin, Don Maida, and Jeff Richards. Among the highlights of the season were victories over Mel- rose, Beverly, and Lynn English. In their three big games against St. John ' s Prep, the Boys skated away with a win and two ties to take first place in the Essex Coun- ty League. This year also marked the re- turn of Peabody High to the State Hockey Tournament after an absence of almost twenty years. Coach this year’s club were George Kinnaly assisted by Mike Gilligan. 122 Hockey Girls Basketball L. TO R. 1st ROW: Kelly Daley, Paula Keating, Co-Capt. Jeanne Guinee, Co-Capt. Jill Bergin. 2nd ROW: Coach Lorraine Benoit, Carol Doherty. Lynn Nelson, Cheryl Cronin. Brigid McNiff, Debbie Ter- renzoni. Missing: Linda Cullen, Maureen Splaine. The girl’s varsity Basketball Team had their best season ever this year. The winning season was due to the winning determination of the girls, fol- lowing two losing seasons. The team got off to a slow start, losing the first two scrim- mages, but emerged deter- mined to w in. In one of the closest and hardest- fought games, the team pulled through and beat Beverly, 39-36. The only league games the team lost were to first place Bishop Fen- wick. By beating Beverly and a strong Haverhill team, the con- fidence of the team was raised. Although injuries plagued the team, they won a double-over- time game against Lawrence, which upped their record even more. Both the girls and their coaches deserve much credit for producing the hard work and dedication necessary to put their team on a winning streak again. Field Hockey The Peabody High girl ' s field hockey team has completed its second season of inter-scholastic competition. This season the team was in the Essex County League playing games on a home and away basis. Since the league has lost many of its members to the expanded Northeast Conference, the Peabody squad scheduled games with some well-established teams outside the league. These games not only helped compen- sate for the lack of league con- tests, but also gave the Peabody girls more competitive experience. Last year was the team’s first season, evidenced by their lone victory of the 1972 campaign. However, due to the interest gen- erated in field hockey, some of this year ' s players paid their way for a week of advanced instruction in hockey skills at Sugar Brook Field Hockey Camp in Browns- ville, Vermont. Also, the turnout for try-outs this season was much more responsive than last season, and the greater team spirit and enthusiasm helped to produce a better season: 4 victories and 8 losses. TO R. 1st ROW: Bob, Judy, Carol, Karen, Susan, 2nd ROW: Andi, Debbie, Steve, Ted, Joanne, Earl, Karen, and Ed. The META staff-to-be first came together at the end of our junior year for the purpose of putting together a yearbook. We knew we had a lot of work ahead of us, but then that was a summer’s time away. September came almost too quickly and suddenly all that work became a reality. We were barely organized when our first deadline crept up on us. With a new advisor, who came to our rescue, knowing no more than we did about yearbooks, we all learned together. We pooled all our resources and ideas, and managed to come up with the needed fifty pages. Many late nights were spent at school preparing for this first deadline. Our office soon became a haven for us. During studies, during classes, and after school, we were con- stantly taking refuge there. After-school work sessions became our regular course of action, the sun often taking leave of the premises long before we did. The staff worked well on these late-night mara- thons, the loudest quarrels developing over who would make the “food-runs” for pizza. The most nerve-racking production days occurred on the eve of each deadline. On these evenings, the world “deadline” itself seemed to take on super-human overtones and challenge us, but in all four cases the challenge was met. As each deadline passed, we vowed silently (and exhaustedly) to ourselves that we would get an earlier start on the next deadline. Our last deadline, at the beginning of February, was a sentimental one. We sighed with relief to wit- ness at last the culmination of months of hard work, but realized at the same time that it was this very effort which had forged a bond between all members of the staff a bond which, despite individual differences and occasional disputes, was a powerful one. It is this bond which results in the production of a yearbook; it is this bond which helped to create the 1 974 M ETA. The Meta Staff would like to give a warm thanks to Elizabeth Lynch. James Picone, Diana Noble, Katherine D’Amour, Caroll McNair, Robert Cavanaugh, and Kaida Guilfoyle for their help and guid- ance throughout the year. EDITOR-IN-CHIEF Robert C. Pi. META, which has become a lasting tradition at Peabody High School, is now entering upon its second . fifty years of service to the school. Each year, the META has tried to leave the students a legacy of their years at Peabody High; the triumphs, the defeats, the memories that are Peabody High School. Each year we try to bridge the gap between the life around us and the limita- tions of a roving camera. Each year we come a little clos- er to realizing our goal. Every year the META grows and changes with the school of which it is so much a part. May the next fifty years be as productive, as rewarding, and as meaningful to the students of Peabody High School as the first fifty years have been.
