Graduation, to you, must be recognized as the beginning of a new and definitely challenging era in which will descend upon your generation the grave responsibility of alleviating the world of the futile strife, strident dissonance, and harsh discord so prevalent today. I have the greatest confidence in your future progress, for as a student body you admirably ex- hibited the intelligence, the wisdom, and the pru- dence so necessary to your generation if it is to make this world a better place in which to live. “The foundation of every state is the education of its youth.” He labored “in general honest thought and common good to all.” Diogenes Shakespeare Faithfully serving the City of Peabody for many years as a teacher in the High School and as the Superinten- dent of Schools, William A. Welch faced and solved in a truly dedicated and capable manner the many chal- lenges of education; teaching, curriculum planning, management, and administration. With a deep feeling of appreciation we recall this great man and his contri- bution to our better educational facilities and higher standards of learning. The impact that his devotion and ideals have made on our educational system con- tinues to serve as a true testimony of his life and ser- vice. Peabody can never repay its debt to this man who served and loved it for so many years. Deeply sensitive to the educational needs of its youth and motivated by a sincere desire to fulfill these needs, Arthur J. Barry lived a life of sacrifice to God and his fellow man. We cannot measure the full significance of his leadership. We honor him for the virtues of understanding, pa- tience, compassion, and performance which charact- erize his stewardship as the Principal of Peabody High School. Of greater meaning than our words are his life and goodness which stand as the greatest tribute to his excellence. 3
