2013 . 58.1 Yearbook For Reference Not to be taken from this library w Editor Susan Demming Assistant Editor Bruce Young House Editors Terry Latter Elizabeth Beston Steven OrlofF Vocational Editors James Doyle Jeffrey Chandler Photo Editor Robert Sugerman Advertising Manager Katherine O’Connor w. WA ■ This year, the Class of 1971 takes pride in dedi- cating the META to Mr. Robert P. Cavanaugh, a man Vho has devoted much of his life to the young. It would take pages to recognize all the contributions he has made and all the encourage- ment he has given, not only to the classes of Peabody High, but also to kids throughout the entire Northshore area. A great teacher, a won- derful advisor, a warm human being — Mr. C, you’re one of our very special friends! “The foundation of every state is the education of its youth.” He labored “in general honest thought and common good to all.” Diogenes Shakespeare Faithfully serving the City of Peabody for many years as a teacher in the High School and as the Superinten- dent of Schools, William A. Welch faced and solved in a truly dedicated and capable manner the many chal- lenges of education; teaching, curriculum planning, management, and administration. With a deep feeling of appreciation we recall this great man and his contri- bution to our better educational facilities and higher standards of learning. The impact that his devotion and ideals have made on our educational system con- tinues to serve as a true testimony of his life and ser- vice. Peabody can never repay its debt to this man who served and loved it for so many years. Deeply sensitive to the educational needs of its youth and motivated by a sincere desire to fulfill these needs, Arthur J. Barry lived a life of sacrifice to God and his fellow man. We cannot measure the full significance of his leadership. We honor him for the virtues of understanding, pa- tience, compassion, and performance which charact- erize his stewardship as the Principal of Peabody High School. Of greater meaning than our words are his life and goodness which stand as the greatest tribute to his excellence. 3 My dear Graduates: Congratulations to the Class of 1971 as you mark the termination of a most important cycle in your progress through life! Graduation, to you, must be recognized as the beginning of a new and definitely challenging era in which will descend upon your generation the grave responsibility of alleviating the world of the futile strife, strident dissonance, and harsh discord so prevalent today. I have the greatest confidence in your future progress, for as a student body you admirably ex- hibited the intelligence, the wisdom, and the pru- dence so necessary to your generation if it is to make this world a better place in which to live. May your lives be gratifyingly rewarding and blessed with enduring health and happiness! Sincerely, William A. And for every concept of the mind, and for every ideal of hope, and for every thing that must be, there is a desire to change and to better.’ And it will be so. And we see much of what we have done, and, behold, it is diverse and extensive. And there was evening, and now there is morning, the sixth day, June, 1971. Who can forget his contagious humor and his knack of coming out with some unexpected word or saying at just the right time! Many of us have tried to imitate him, but in vain. There was only one Lennie Cronin, and we’ll always remember him. 73 ■Nw £j||| 1 1 i at V . •. emjk tifc a 5 t Jrt Despite injuries, the Cross-Country team finished third in the Essex County League. Peabody — Salem Rally With cheers and support from all of us, our football team displayed its determination to give archrival Salem a challenging game. 1 J n ’ FJ VARSITY FOOTBALL The loss of 29 seniors from 1970’s team hurt the state champion Tanners, but a speedy running attack and a tough defense gained them a mea- sure of respect despite the poor 3-5 record. Sheehan will remember her pa- tience and good nature as she helped unselfishly and devotedly for over twenty-seven years in countless musical and variety shows sponsored by the high school. 116 The Meta Staff of 1971 expresses its gratitude to all the people who have helped to make our yearbook a success. Mr. Callahan was always around to give plenty of encouragement and advice. We genuinely appreciate both his assistance and the use of his office. We are indebted to Miss Luz for her hard work on the ad- vertising campaign and in the management of financial matters. A big thank you is extended to Mrs. Benoit and Mrs. Marcos for their help with the typing work which was necessary. And finally, our deepest thanks go to all those who did the small and unnoticed jobs which are so important in such a tremendous project as the production of this yearbook. 117 THEY WERE VERY GOOD YEARS A CLASS HISTORY After three years of junior high school, we, the class of ’71 entered Peabody High School on September 4, 1968 with optimistic thoughts of acting as “cool” as possi- ble. These visions were quickly shattered on that hot and humid day when we, the entering sophomore class, viewed our future home of secondary education — the institution on the hill! When we were sophomores it was a very good year. A very good year for learning and envying. Within a few short weeks we were accustomed to the three houses of P.H.S. and their respective locations. Though becoming accustomed did not in- clude making it to class on time, it did include knowing where the nearest unit director’s office was so that one could obtain legal entrance — a late slip. Since 7:30 A. M. was not our idea of a decent hour of the morning to begin class- es, the fourth period homeroom and lunch period was, for most of us, the first time we opened our eyes all day! It was a very good year for snow storms. How could anyone forget the four days of school we had in February and the exciting tales we told when asked, “Where were you during the snow storms?” Among the “firsts” at P.H.S. that year was the banned culotte being added to the dress code and our football team almost making Class A champs. Yes, it was a very good year. When we were juniors it was a very good year. A very good year for involvement and excitement. It was a very good year for football. Our dynamite team brought us many exciting moments we will never forget. Remember that rainy day in Salem when we splashed our way to victory? Who could forget that bitterly cold day in Saugus when we became Class A champs! History was made that year at P.H.S. The dress code was abolished — well almost. 118 Dungarees were still forbidden, that is if you got caught. Oh those 1 hink-It-Overs! Though it seemed like centuries since we ordered them, our long awaited class rings came. However, they had to be reordered. It seems the ring company made a little mistake. It was the year to take our first College Board and Achievement Exams. Remem- ber those three hours of seeing spots before your eyes? That was the year that most of us became of age. Driving age that is. Many thanks to Mr. Cronin for his guidance during that trying period. Our first formal affair was held on May 8, 1970. The beautiful Chateau DeVille was the setting for our Junior Prom. It was an evening that saw the kids in the junior class transformed into the young men and women that no one could recog- nize. Yes, it was a very good year. When we were seniors it was a very good year. A very good year for maturing and planning. It was a year of filling out college applications and taking College Board Exams. Why did they make them so hard? It was a very good year for relaxing in the senior lounge and for being able to wear dungarees legally to school. Many thanks to MacDonalds for supplying Christmas decorations on the library roof. The Christmas Ball, held December 29, 1970 proved to be the perfect event for celebrating the holiday season. Slowly but surely plans were made for the future and everyone looked forward to the events surrounding Graduation Day. First came the practicing and drilling outside while the underclassmen looked on with envy. Next came our fabulous banquet. Our last gathering, our Senior Re- ception, was a night filled with laughing, crying, and many, many memories. And then before we knew it, Graduation Day came. It was a day we longed for when we were sophomores but now as seniors all we could do was stop and think. Yes, they were very good years! 119 From the Kitchen of: Peabody High School Seniors Serves: The Class of 1971 TAKE: 4 lbs. flour of love Vi lb. buttered youth Vi lb. good looks Vi lb. sweet temper V 2 lb. self-forgetfulness V 2 lb. blindness of faults V 2 lb. powdered wits V 2 ounce dry humor 2 tablespoons sweet argument V 2 pint rippling laughter V 2 wine glass common sense PUT: The flour of love, good looks, and sweet temper into a well-furnished house.
