£ oncjrci ond - (LfaSS of 1968 As you know, 1968 marks the Centennial of Peabody’s name. For one hundred years, men and women have proudly taken our name to every corner of the globe. I have no doubt that the members of the Class of 1968 will also add new lustre to the history of our glorious city. I am pleased to note that you are the first class to graduate in my administration. If it pleases you, I would like to give you the designation “ Centennial Class ” of Peabody Senior High School. With every best wish for your future success, I remain Very truly yours, Nicholas Mavroules Mayor of Peabody EDITORS Editor-in-Chief Stanley Lehto Co-Editor Art Editor Jonathan Sacks Barbara Salt Photography Editor Andrew Zetlan Sports Editor Mark Weiner House Editors Barbara Senges Myrna Sterin Cheryl Lechten FOREWORD A yearbook is a record of past events and achievements. A high school yearbook is a curious collection of varied and sometimes humorous memories that serves to remind one of a unique and wonderful period of life; for a high school career cannot be summarized merely as a list of events that occurred during a given period of time. Four years of high school are made up of intangible things, like learning in a classroom, enjoying oneself at a dance, feeling anger for punishment in school, or gaining satisfaction for completing a group project. These and other experiences serve to create for each of us a different concept of what high school is, and what is important about it. But it is also during this period of our lives that wo are gaining our views of life in general, both in and out of school. Our experiences in high school help us to form our ideas and opinions of what is important in life, what is worth striving for. That is why high school, and thus the high school yearbook, are so important. It is with this idea in mind that we on the literary staff have created the Meta ’68. We’ve tried to include not just lists of people and their accomplishments, but different ideas and feelings about these people, both students and faculty, who have helped make Peabody High what it was, and what it is to each of us of the Class of 1968. We hope that, with the help of Mr. Thomas Callahan and Miss Mary Luz, we have done this in an effective and pleasing way, and we hope that as you look at this book in later years, you will take pride and enjoyment from remembering Peabody High School. Yet it is with a feeling of sadness that we must add the next thought. The memories we will recall from this yearbook must always include memories of life outside of school. We wish that it were possible to write that these will be joyful memories of a peaceful world. We can only add that it is the fervent hope of everyone connected with this yearbook that the Meta ’69 will be published in a time of peace. The Editor-in-Chief Compliments of META STAFF “I know of no more encouraging fact than the unquestion- able ability of man to elevate his life by a conscious endeavor. ' 1 ' — Henry David Thoreau And so the life of our Principal, Arthur J. Barry, has been elevated by his actions and thoughts in the past thirty-four years. One man’s ideas and philosophies forged ahead to help shape the lives of two generations of young people. He spoke and we listened, but more than that, we spoke and he listened. Com- munications from Mr. Barry to his pupils have always been good - thoughtful, understanding, fair. Feelings run deep and meaningful. His guidance knows no boundaries, many of our predecessors have been influenced greatly by him. Yes, Arthur J. Barry has served long and well. He will forever be cherished and remembered by all those fortunate to have met him. The Class of 1968 dedicates this yearbook of our past record and achievements, the Meta ’68, to a man who has “elevated his life by a conscious endeavor.” Compliments of HOMEROOM B-28 Four Star Service 80 Newbury Street, Peabody, Mass. We stood assembled on the Central Street lawn trying to decide whether to enter that glorious brick building that would build our futures or the little one across the street that would build our stomachs. After due consideration we decided to build our stomachs up a bit before we tried to build our futures. Once the authorities finally coaxed us into the building, they had us . . . lock, stock and barrel. We wonder if they are regretting it more than we are. It took us most of our Freshman year to learn which stairs were up” and which were “down”. It also took most of our first year to distinguish some of the teachers from the students. And the faculty! Weren ' t they some- thing, gang? Let’s hear it for the old faculty! Hip, hip, hoor--ah, come on fellas, they weren ' t all that bad. Can we ever fcrget the Memorial Day assembly that was delivered to us over the public address system? That was a privilege not to be overlooked. We, being Freshmen, had the 12:00 to 5:00 after- noon shift. Yup, we really liked those working man’s hours. They even carried us through supper. How can we ever forget June, 1964 when we were initiated into our first final examinations? (After 3 days of taking No-Doz, it was scientifically proved that there were 33% fewer students attending P.H.S.). So ended the Freshman year for those who made it. We came back again, but this time as Sophomores. Being the upperclassmen now, we still got the same privileges; the 12:00 to 5:00 shift and assemblies we could hear only through the static. We were really in the swing now. Many of us still had trouble locating rooms 106 and 207. On our way to school each morning, as we crowded into Mello’s, we had to fight our way through the yo-yo’s and the F.L.L.A.’s. Would you believe the city finally built a new Peabody High School? Yes, it’s true and we couldn’t have asked for a more beautiful and well-equipped school. As we walked up the long, winding driveway from Allen’s Lane, we heard many cries from students who were wondering what the large inverted soup dish was that sat on top of the school. Of course, we later found that it was the roof to the modern, circular library. Upon entering, we soon discovered that we would have very few stairs to climb and descend. As the first few weeks of our Junior year passed, we found that we had to either star in track to reach cur classes on time or suffer the consequences and receive late slips. There was one time, however, that we students did not mind being late, and that was for lunch. At this time, all of us students would like to thank the person who wrote the book, “Three Thousand Ways To Prepare Hamburg”. Our great cooks tried them all. All in all, our Junior year was really a lot of fun. We studied hard and played equally as hard. There were good times and bad times but now it seems that we can remember only the exciting occasions. Aristotle N. Vontzalides, D.M.D. Stanley L. Webb, C.L.U. 29 Lowell Street, Peabody, Mass. 24 Main Street, Peabody, Mass. CLASS HISTORY Our Christmas Assembly was a hit. After many years of conducting the annual show, our principal was finally allowed to sit back and enjoy the program as our students conducted it. Even Good Oh Saint Nick recovered his head in time to make a star appearance (on his little red wagon) . Small skits, the chorus and band entertained us and the Christmas spirit we felt was overwhelming. We will always remember our Junior Prom which was held in May, 1967. It was a memorable occasion and everyone who attended thoroughly enjoyed himself. By the end of the evening we were all humming the tune to “Shadow Of Your Smile” as the band played. Midnight seemed to come all too soon. As Fall, 1967, descended upon us, we, the members of the graduating class of ’68, honoredly took our rightful places in the Senior homerooms. We were full of anticipation at what the upcoming year would bring us. The very first piece of business we Seniors had to complete was to elect our class officers, who would make the important decisions for us throughout the year. May we never forget the lively Peabody ' Salem foot ' ball rally the entire student body attended in the gym. The crowd roared as the cheerleaders appeared as football players and the players appeared as the cheerleaders. In January, 1968, our school was very lucky indeed to have secured the Navy Band to perform for us. Again we crowded into the gymnasium to be entertained by a very fine group of musicians. Soon after the concert began, we found ourselves clapping our hands to the beat of familiar show tunes. The year is continuing at a very fast pace and we are becoming aware of the anxiety of our classmates. Already, many of us have received college acceptances and others have made definite plans for the future. Some are still unsure of their plans, however, we are already experiencing pangs of “graduation anxiety” as the end of the year is rapidly approaching. Our Senior Class is planning many events to carry us through these, our last few months at P.H.S. One of the events planned to raise money for our graduation and banquet is the Peabody ' Salem faculty basketball game. This should be one exciting game. In May, our Dramatic Guild will present their annual play. This year it is entitled “Hip Hippie Hooray”. We are promised many a laugh if the play comes off well. The most important week in our entire year is that of Senior Week which will be held on the first week in June. During this time we will practice for graduation, attend our Senior Reception and Banquet, and finally, after four years of preparation, receive our diplomas. Four long years of studying, working, and playing cannot possibly be condensed and written in a few small pages. However, we members of the Literary Staff hope that you have enjoyed our brief summation of some of the events that the Class of ’68 produced. These were some of our most invaluable memories. The young Peabody squad couldn ' t make much headway against the veteran North Shore teams. They showed a willingness to work, however, and a desire to win that must be congratulated. Peabody ended its season with a 2-1 record, picking up two late season wins against Nashua and Saugus. The most outstanding player on the team was Bill Dexter. He gave the team the spirit and drive. Bill’s tragic death leaves us all poorer, as he was one of the finest boys in this school, both on and off the playing field. Ralph Hudson, also a back, played fine ball, bucking his way for extra yardage against the Tanners’ opponents. The quarterbacks were Bill Linehan and Steve DeSisto, both Juniors. The line included “Little” Rick McMillan, Don Lobb, Tom L ' ltalien, Peter Sakelakos, Perry Kara- koudas, and Ed Begley. The end positions were played by Lou Metaxatos, Phil Megason, Charles Lincicum, and Bob O’Brien. Both O’Brien and Metaxatos are Sopho ' mores, and Lincicum is a Junior. Megason was a Senior. Other Varsity players were Steve Buckley, Dave Dragon, Rick Delpero, Kevin Murray, Kevin McCarthy, and Bill Winn. The Tanners’ J.V. squad has some fine new players that look promising for future years. Among these are Carl Richards, Louis Pepi, and Jim Mahaney. The J.V.’s went 9 ' 0 against the J.V. squads of North Shore teams. Next year looks like a good year for Coach Adamopoulos’ squad. A greater variety of Senior talent will be offered to him. Many Junior players will also strengthen his back ' field and line. If the players like Ray Talkington and Bob Raucci can steer clear of injuries, the Blue and White might go all the way next year. BASKETBALL The Peabody High Basketball Squad completed its season with a 9-7 record, coming within two games of participating in the Tech Tourney. The team tied with Haverhill for fourth place in the Essex County League. Coach Ed Curtin and his Co-Captains, Mark McDonald and Bruce Webster, led the team to a fine season. Co- Captain Mark McDonald won, for the second year, the Essex County High Scoring Championship with 405 points. Peabody started the season with an easy victory over Bishop Fenwick and then with equal ease took a game from Marblehead. Peabody then lost four games in a row. This looked like the end of Peabody’s chances for the Tech Tourney, but they proceeded to win six out of their next seven games, dropping only one to Lynn Classical. The most outstanding game played in this series was Peabody’s last — and second victory against Salem. Aided by high scoring Mark McDonald and the rebounds of Rich McMillan, Peabody pulled an upset against the Essex County Champs. An equally outstanding perform- ance was then given against Lynn English in which Peabody placed themselves only four games out of the Tourney. Quick victories against Gloucester and Beverly were wrought by quick moving Bruce Webster, the 5 foot 4 inch guard who plays better than most 6 footers. High flying Peabody was cut short in their second to last game against Lowell, suffering a disappointing defeat. Peabody then lost their last game in a very close game against Saugus. This is the second year Peabody has missed out of the Tech Tourney by only one or two games. Last year it was the final game that cost Peabody the Tech Tourney. The Varsity Squad was composed of : Mark Mc- Donald, Bruce Webster, Mike Lalicos, Ralph Hudson, Don Hardin, Buzz, Partilides, Dan Kirkorian, George Cornichuck, George Soteropoulos, Bill Linehan, Rich McMillan, Don Raphael, and Rich Laramie. Consistently fine performances were always given by Mike Lalicos, Bill Linehan, and Don Hardin. If it were not for a few problems with academic qualifications it would have been a much finer year for the Peabody Squad. However, Juniors Ralph Hudson, Don Raphael, and George Corni- chuck look for a fine season next year. One of the surprises at the close of the season were the outstanding performances of two Sophomores, Puch Laramie and George Soteropoulos. From all this running, Peabody achieved a 2-6 record, four admirable state placings, and a medal to Sophomore Mike Cameron for outstanding prowess at the Essex County Meet. The Varsity Squad comprised Captain Jerry Morton, Mark Weiner, Peter Gargas, Rod Hossfeld, Phil Marchetti, Charles Zakas, Mike Lawrence, and John McCarter. Our J.V. squad compiled a 6-2 record, losing one to the league leaders, Beverly and Saugus. This fine young squad was r: • up cf Mike Cameron, Wayne Sylvanowicz, Frank nha, Harry Rothman, Mike Espinola, Buddy Leonard, and Frank Durkin. Leading point scorers for the season were Jerry Morton, Peter Gargas, Mark Weiner, and Junior Mike Lawrence. During the season all these boys under Coach Smyrnios’ guidance practiced under hard conditions over their 2.9 mile course. They practiced over 500 miles for a three-month season. Outstanding young runners to look for next year are Mike Lawrence, Wayne Sylvanowicz, and Mike Cameron. The course record is held by Jerry Morton at 14:48, with Mark Weiner, Mike Cameron, Mike Lawrence, and Peter Gargas also in 14 minutes time. M. K. SONS EXPRESS, INC. 39 FULTON STREET, PEABODY, MASS. The tri-captains for the team were Phil Mar ' chetti, Peter Gargas, and Mark Weiner. All meets were conducted in the Andover cage. Peabody participated in nine dual meets. The team comprised five seniors, four juniors, and twenty sophomores, but this “green squad” had two things in its favor: drive and team spirit. Coach Smyrnios’ distance madmen alone compiled 172 points, the bulk of Peabody’s scoring power. This isn’t to say the shorter distance races were lacking in determination and skill; one of the outstanding 300 yard men of the league was Phil Marchetti, and fine sprints were run by Bob Raucci, Jim Mahaney, Steve Herman, and Gary Raulch. The main weak spot that retarded Peabody’s season was the shot put, despite the efforts of Ray Talkington and Eric Kolhonan, veteran putters of the team. Another sore spot was the 45 yard high hurdles. However, Junior Thomas Makela has ironed out his problems and is look ' ing forward to a better season. One of the most phenom ' inal surprises of the year was the battle in the 2 mile between Jerry Morton and Mike Cameron. This friendly rivalry just helped both fine runners achieve better times. Mark Weiner ran the 1,000 yard all season and turned in some fine times; he also had the dubious honor of running against two state champs. Miler Mike Lawrence was our leading high jumper and 4 minute miler followed closely by Dave Bailey. In the 600, Peter Gargas finished the season in fine form against many tough opponents. Pete’s last lap kick earned him the nickname “Sneaky Pete. Individual high scorers were Mike Lawrence with an awesome 63 points, followed by Mark Weiner and Phil Marchetti with 33 points. Other high scorers were Mike Cameron, Pete Gargas, Jerry Morton, and Thomas Makela. All knew that Peabody was a relatively young team lacking in experience and size. However, most local sports writers considered Peabody as a team that was cap- able of giving anyone a good game. Peabody High did just that. Although not finishing with an impressive overall record, 2 wins, 2 ties, and 12 losses, Peabody played a spirited and exciting brand of hockey. Peabody, under the guidance of Coach Charles Carlin, opened its hockey season against Gloucester in the Hockey Jamboree. Gloucester showed why it was considered one of the North Shore powerhouses as it came through with an impressive 4-1 victory. It looked as though it would be a long season for the boys from Peabody High. The Tanners’ first league game was against a strong Saugus team. Saugus’ experience paid off with a 5-3 vic- tory. However, our boys showed that they would not give up and that they could score. In their next game, Sophomore Charlie Floyd came through with the hat trick (3 goals), but it wasn’t enough as Peabody bowed to St. John’s Prep, 5-4. Peabody played fine hockey in its next three games. Led by Charlie Floyd and Bob Gagnon, Peabody defeated Lynn Classical 6-2 for its first victory of the season. Floyd netted the hat trick again and Senior Gary Wells, shifted from defense to goalie, played a fine game in the nets. The sweet taste of victory did not last very long as the Tanners lost another tough decision, this time to St. Mary’s of Lynn, 3-2. Our next game was against tra- ditional rival Salem. Both teams played outstanding defensive games, with Peabody having a decisive offensive advantage. The game, however, ended in a IT tie. Wells played another fine game in the nets and Gagnon scored Peabody’s only goal. Peabody then came into the tough part of its schedule. They played Lynn English, Gloucester, Malden Catholic, and Marblehead, all the North Shore power- houses, in a row. All eventually qualified for the Eastern Massachusetts Hockey Tournament. Needless to say, Peabody lost all four games. They bowed to eventual league champ Lynn English 4-2, Gloucester 5-0, Malden Catholic 6-3, and Marblehead 5-1. The Tanners’ next foe was Danvers. The teams battled to a 4-4 tie. Victory was finally achieved again against Woburn, 2-1. The experience gained from the games with the “tough guys” seemed to pay dividends. However, Peabody was to collect no more dividends for the rest of the season, losing to Winthrop 3-2, Saugus 4-2, Amesbury 4-1, Swampscott 3-2, and Beverly 9-1. As seen by the scores, the Tanners were in most of these games, but the win continually eluded them. The 1967-68 season saw Sophomore Charlie Floyd and Junior Bob Gagnon emerge as two of the league’s scorers. Also, many of the Sophomores and Juniors show- ed much promise — including A1 Atkinson, Kevin Lynch, Mike Spence, Jim Sousa, Frank Durgin, John McCarter, and Ken Langley. Seniors playing their last year were Gary Wells, Rich Lindgren, Brian Champigny, and John MacDougall. Coach Carlin has much to look forward to next year. Wtih a year’s experience under their belts, these Sophomores and Juniors will be much improved. The old sports cliche’, “Wait until next year” seems very appropriate. INTRAMURAL SPORTS For the last two years a program of Intramural Sports has been established to allow students in our high school to participate in many aspects of athletics. Mr. Sapienza led the boys in basketball, flag football, volley ' ball, and golf, while Miss McNamara organized the girls in field hockey, badminton, tennis, softball, and volley ' ball. The entire enrollment of students involved comprised a major proportion of our high school. These sports give some nomathletically inclined persons an opportunity to engage in athletic competition. It also keeps out-of ' season athletes in trim for their own particular sport. This year the Senior boys and Sophomore girls succeeded in taking the basketball championship from their own respective groups. At the time of this writing, stiff competition between volleyball teams is ensuing. We all wish this program the best of luck in the future as plans for further expansion into other sports are being sought. Offshoots of this program are the girls 50 ' mile club, the self ' defense course, gymnastic class, and girls running team. HOLDEN’S DAIRY BAR 117 LYNNFIELD STREET. PEABODY, MASS. THOUGHTS ON THE SENIORITY AT P.H.S., or, HAVE YOUR ICE CREAM CASTLES MELTED? you now, somehow, through our last inhalations of a dewy April in a nine month span of well, homework and goofing off, and football games ( this year we’ll croak Salem), and seminars and announcements, and fnday nights at the rocci and then macdonald ' s and platsic for s and lousy food, and thmfi ' it ' overs, and college boards and acceptances and rejections, and rain and bells and late slips, and quic smokes, and part-time jobs, and strange people called teachers and stranger ones that must be lived with, and competition and jealousy, and school spirit or the lack of it, and insincerity in various strategic locations, and bright hopes and broken dreams and uncertainty and awareness and love for all the world, and maybe, for the gift of one, and laughter; laughter in joy, laughter in hesitancy, and with jests, with ridicule, with friends, and with tears . . . Yes, and tears — tears of fear, of hurt, of bitterness, in growing pains, in grief, in bewilderment, in the gentle understanding love in your friend ' s eyes, in the quiet g rateful joy of being . . . oh somehow we can look past wise and smile to remember, to see our year quite clearly, no regrets, and at the same time, we are coming, fleeing from this gawdawful maybe sometimes oh wow place with just a bit of the wisdom that isn ' t to come ' til “later , soon we will only be able to wistfidly glance back through the mist of years, and we can never return to this dewy April again.
