That was our next stop, opening up a new and exciting life, full of unforgettable memories and friendships. We all assembled in the audb torium, listening attentively for our names to be called, anxious to see who our homeroom teachers would be. Not only was the academic atmosphere different, but split sessions forced us to attend school from 12 noon till 5 p.m. It was quite strange coming home from school in the dark, but we soon overcame that fear. We also found the Freshman class occupying the high school alone. Soon the football season started into full swing. How could we concentrate on Algebra, hearing all the cheers of the Gloucester football game going on outside? Then came our Freshman Dance, our first social event of our high school days. The Christmas assembly was very festive and enjoyed by all. We became aware of the talents of our fellow students, knowing our class spirit would be carried on through our four years of high school. Although our Freshman year was filled with hap ' piness, there was one sad moment, November 22, 1963. How can we forget the announcement on the loud speaker that our President, John F. Kennedy, was assassinated in Dallas, Texas. We were living in an historic age. During our Sophomore year, we began to reach out with less uncertainty, for we considered school the same old routine. Again on split sessions, with the same time schedule, we did have one consolation; we were the upperclassmen, snickering at the poor Freshmen frantically trying to find their way around school. As one drove by the high school on a spring day, the sidewalks were a mass of students playing with their yo ' yo ' s and lapping lollypops. Oh, what a temptation to skip school on those nice balmy days! Remember?? As the Class of ’67 entered their Junior year, a new awakening was at hand, at 7 o ' clock. Our schedule had changed, and we now attended school from 7:30 to 12. These hours were a great asset to us, for we were able to work in the afternoon, or to go back to bed, which many did. So on to the music room we went to get measured for our valued class rings, anxiously awaiting the day when we would receive them. We really felt like the livcrowd with our black onyx rings. Also the students of P.H.S. were honored in having a visit from Senator Edward M. Kennedy, speaking on his visit to Vietnam. Maybe the old high school on Central Street was old and outdated, but it gave us some of the best memories of our lives. How can we forget the flood in 211, the unlockable lockers, and the auditorium seats? In May, our first formal affair, the Junior Prom, was held at Castle Hill in Ipswich. The night was warm, as gentle breezes blew in from the sea. It was a night that will long be remembered by many. Finally the year we awaited arrived in all its splendor. Our new high school, located on Allen’s Lane, was coni ' pleted, causing much confusion to students and teachers alike. It took a while to find our way around the sprawling buildings. Yet, we managed, somehow. We also had to become familiar with the cafeteria and gym classes, both of which we never had at the old high school. The Senior Barn Dance was quite successful, allow ' ing students to jerk and frug to their hearts content. Our Christmas Ball, held at Caruso’s Diplomat, ushered in the holiday spirit. When we were measured for our caps and gowns, we realized the time for graduation was truly drawing closer. Our banquet, June 5th, was a feast we all enjoyed, giving us a final opportunity to talk with our classmates before Graduation Day. June 7th was the date of the Senior Reception, held at the Hillview Country Club. This was the last formal dance of our high school days. At last we stood facing the final phase of Peabody High, receiving our valued diplomas. We successfully completed our secondary education and we now entered into another avenue of life. Time flies. It seemed like only yesterday we were Freshmen and now we are alumni of Peabody High. We may never see each other again, but memories will always linger on; surely we shall dwell on these happy thoughts, for they are a part of our lives. I would like to give you a tour of our fine city but first let me introduce you to the mayor, John Morrocco, his assistant, Susan Boze , his secretary, Carol Musial, and the city treasurer, Richard Reily. You will find the city to be very active — people busily engaged in their occupations. As we travel down Blackberry Street, the main street in Gradsen City, we find many buildings of interest. First, we come across the new Medical Center, planned by Daniel Quinlan, William Curtis, and Anthony Corni ' chuc . The fine plumbing fixtures are the work of Stanley Kulacz. We give thanks to David Collette for his land ' scaping. In the building are many skilled persons, includ ' ing the doctors, Richard Singer, William Bac man, Paul LeGrow, Michael Feldman, Dwight McLJeil, Anne DeCourcy, and Gale Kalfin. Helping these doctors keep their files straight are the Medical Secretaries, Kathleen Murphy, Joanne Holden, Cynthia Fowler, Linda Almeida, Allison Ireland, and Terry Salovitch. The busy nurses, Barbara Whalen, Joan Jen ms, Anne Mane Walsh, Laureen Flanagan, Carol Swift, Earlene Perrone, Janis Fee, Maureen Kane, and Mane Collette are constantly racing around helping their patients, Josephine Mattos, Susan Lampert, Stephen Vlachos, Linda Clooney, Richard Bartlett, Carol O Bnen, David Christiansen, Lance Reidy, Larry Winer, John Moutsoulas, and Joseph Karpicz. Downstairs you will find the technicians, Gloria Gnffm, Timothy Britton, Karen Marche w a, Kathleen Kelso, Lana Howarth, Maryellen Wayman, Robert Adams, Thom as Manuel, Maryellen Goodndge, and Robert Flynn. Also holding offices in this building are the well-known dentist, Richard Maloney, three psychologists, Tom Zalews i, Randi Kaufman, and Esther Weisman, and Stephanie LeBell, famous Veterinarian. As we continue down the street, on the opposite side is the school; well, let ' s take a peek inside! In the gym, James McDonald, James Gauthier, Steve Begley, and Kevin Bellew are coaching their basketball teams for the upcoming games. Continuing down the hall, we find the administration suite where the secretaries, Linda Kelleher, Ruthann Pohju, Paula Patrus a, Linda Snow, Christine Zarba, Susan Worsencroft, Maureen Shea, Joyce Barros, Kathleen Slattery, Linda Tonis, and Laura Dunajs i are conducting the school’s business. On the second floor we find the classrooms. Business subjects are taught by Beth Demeritt, Wilma Tal mgton, Kathy Kosidla , and Christina Cataldo. Right now a lecture on the Civil War is being given by the History teachers. George Maria, Richard Dimitroff, and Elena Swam. The English teachers, Sherry Helton, Diana Havelic , Sandra Croall, Pamela Paine, Gale Smith, Linda Rheaume, Muriel Spector, and Patricia Kramer are having a tough time getting their classes to understand “Macbeth” by William Shakespeare. In the math lab are Evelyn Johnson, Anne Ber owitz, Candace Morin, John Doucette, and Michael Kyslows i, administering help to unfortunate students who don ' t understand Advanced Math. Ross Richardson, a French teacher, and Denise Martwichucl{, a Spanish teacher, are now in the language labs putting away equipment. Down in the teacher’s room, Elaine Andromidas, Lorraine Apostolides, Anita Lehto, and Cheryl Langer are congregating discussing the day’s events. Around the corner is the office of the guidance counselor, Valerie Salaras. On the third floor of the school is one class giving help to retarded children. Barbara Bierman is the teacher. Further down the street, the teachers cf the ele men- tary school are holding a faculty meeting. Leading the meeting are Chris FJatheos, Salvatore Marci, Effie Orgettas, and David MacGregor. Hollie Rabmovitz, Charles Partaledis, Kathy Carter, Esabel Marques, Linda Patsiaris, Marjorie Spurr, Shirley Ravaris, Heidi Lawrence, and Jo Ann Dudzisz are seated around a table proposing new rules for the school. Michael Cerullo, Claudia Blodjian, Sharon Trodella, Brad MacGregor, James Scaramontias, Joanne Smith, and Maryann Tarasu are now discussing the days that opportunity classes should be held. Unable to attend due to previous engagements are Joseph Patuleia, Sandra Shifano, Marjorie Rutstem, Barbara Pierce, Ruthanne Barr, Ann Cullman, Thomas Clements, Jean Simard, Linda Fowler, Michael Kravchu , Louis Las arris, Penelope Kardaras, Gail Atkinson, Linda Katsolas, Karen Jones, and Mar Flynn. Well, we ' ll leave them to their meeting and move on. The Town Court, which you see to your left, is now in its twentieth year of upholding law and order. Right now, the case of an arch criminal is being con- ducted. It seems he stole a valuable formula from the prominent physicist, Stephen Lubow. Because this was such a shocking and terrifying crime, the lawyers, Dennis Comeau, Larry LJewman, Alan Orloff, Anthony Maggio, Carl Goldfarb, and Edward Burns are all present defending the criminal. Jacqueline Toung and Donna Berman are also present taking notes for the lawyers. The jury includes Patricia Jansky, Peter Bergin, Barbara Graham, Martin Goldsworthy, Michael Brann, Eva Kirlis, Donna Dic , Fred Thibeau, Andy Wahtera, Infancy Hmchion, David Whittier, and Joseph Grelish. The alert Chief of Police, Edward Kasprz y , is standing at the door just waiting for a false move. Many reporters are present to cover the trial. Among those that we see here are Reginald Bacon, Christ Smallis, Cheryl Diamond, Anita White, and George LeCain. Located next door to the court is the “Radio Shack”. The city’s broadcasters are Ri chard Snyder, Stephen Fotos, and Thomas Pet avitch. The very popular little store you’ve all probably heard about is to your left. The store has many beautiful clothes for women designed by Karen Briggs and Carol Crabtree. The retail buyers are Helene Russell and Juanita Rosenthal. There are a few models roaming around in the store modeling the current fashions. They are Mane Saxonis, Janice Lussier, and Cathy Gardner. As we enter, we are sure to find Katherine Ward, Virginia AJadeau, Susan Barry, Kathy Mannix, Elizabeth Cetrullo, Diane Wojic , Barbara Shashaty, Mane Silva, Deborah Knowlton, Joann Verza, and Candi Lombardo shopping around for clothes to add to their present wardrobe. Down in the store’s basement, off in a little corner, is the Gradsen Pharmacy run by Michael Shelman and Stephen Kalivas, two leading pharmacologists. The local church is on the corner of this street. If I’m not mistaken, we will find Barry Whetstone perform ' ing the wedding ceremony of Lynda Merrill and Michael Balias. Rumor has it that later on this afternoon there will be the marriage of Diane Red y and Bruce Manning. By the way, the marriage intentions of Wanda Gould and Bobby Rossi were recently announced. Well, I guess the wedding bells will be chiming again very soon. To your right, many hairdressers are busy styling hair at Alyce’s Beauty Shoppe. Among them are Jean McCarthy, Mary Teixeira, Freida Connolly, Susan Bux - ton, Betty Petrovitsis, Freida Mello, AnneMarie McLaugh- lin, Joanne Hamond, and Pam Ferguson. Off in the distance, airplanes can be heard from the Gradsen Airport. At 7:00 p.m. a plane piloted by AI Budets y will be leaving for California on a business trip. Aboard the plane are Daniel Boudreau, Robert Drew, Ric y FJoyes, Dennis Wilson, Cheryl Blazoms, Mary Ann Foss, Sandra Murphy, Judy FJangle, Pam Stanley, and Margaretann Sjuartarone. There they will join Ernie Fritz, Charles Panacopoulos, Ann Marie Arathuzi , Judy McDonald, Joyce Hooper, Mary Berardmo, and George Coc orogianis. This big group has already conferred with the Texas delegation including Charlie Burns, William Bourgeois, Linda Angell, Edward Gardner, Richard Stansfield, Donald Maize, Sonia Tashjian, Charles Mano- la is, James Valente, and Barbara Cross. A large group will be unable to attend because they are on vacation in Europe! They are Cindy Hart, Sandra Gatchell, A [eil Curran, Janet Sampson, Joanne Zambouras, Louis DeFJofrio, Kathy Kran a, Michael Tremblay, Bob Col- lins, John Bailey, and Ronald Chenard. A building of great fame is the Gradsen Museum of Arts and Sciences. There are many art exhibits done by James Lincicum, Lewis Levine, James Psaltis, Danielle LaFontaine, Cathy Dimitroff, Alex Pappas, Gloria Brown, Elizabeth Slaboda, Valane Chatman, Linda Dunphy, and Robert Ford. The Science exhibits are the fine work of the biologists, James Brown and Sandra Chumac . For the last week an interesting film has been shown at the Gradsen Cinema I. I hear it is about the social workers, Margaret McCatherine, Barbara Habelow, Gail Miller, and Marie O ' Meara and how they helped the unfortunate children in foreign countries. Traveling along with them to give aid are three linguists, Deidre S iffmg- lon, Katherine Crowell, and John Costello. Irwin Willins, a meat dealer, and Philip Carpenter, a service manager, tell me they haven’t been able to see the movie yet because each time they get a chance to see it, the tickets are sold out. But Ed Carlan, Bruce Paul, Peter Maravelias, Joseph Doucette, Edward Pais, Ross Bulmer, David Provenzano, John Celentano, George M orfis, John Ley cze , Paul Kehoe, Glenn Delaney, Robert Deveaux, Robert Ercha, Philip Enos, Bruce Amaro, David Drew, and Ronald Reed all saw it and recommend it to anyone. Every morning, Monday through Friday, on Gradu ' ate Street, which is to your right, you can see Patricia Gill, Margaret Roy, FJancy Krochmal, Barbara Waldron, Deborah Thomas, AJancie Slade, Phyllis Ko oras, Anne Eramo, Ann Sherry, FJancy Trainor, and Kathy Doherty scurrying to the side of their I.B.M. Computers at Barry Company. The financial status of this company must have been a mess because Mr. Barry just hired Joe Cavanaugh, Paul Lebel, Maureen Kerble, Ralph Cuillp, and Mimi Glowac i, expert accountants, to straighten out the books. He recently fired their chemical engineer, an incompetent graduate from Salem High, and replaced him with Stephen Jacobs. The second floor of this building is devoted to those men who are the electricians of Gradsen City. Among them are Richard Carson, John DiLorenzo, John Dorman, Fred Davidson, Charles Papadopoulas, Stephen Dolan, Carl Cena, Glenn Haggstrom, Edward Rogers, and Roger Pinto. The third floor consists of the engineers, William Murdoc , Philip Chase, Paul Adamopoulos, Stewart Aronson, Robert Berman, Alan Silbovitz, Bruce Marcus, Kenneth Goldman, John Georges, Joseph Rydzews i, Danny Parris, and John Bla ene y. As we continue we turn left on Swan Street and halfway down we notice the Flamingo, the night club in Gradsen City. As we enter, the host shows us to a table. As we listen to the music of the Flamingos along with singers Martha Thompson and Cynthia Woodbury, with a piano accompaniment by Karl Fultz, we hear laughing voices behind. They are Stefen Costa, William Tansey, Barbara MacKay, Stuart Chase, Joseph O’Keefe, Linda Morse, Richard Davidson, Brian Sullivan, Jean Connolly, and Steven Harrington seated around a table. Serving refreshments are FJancy Bertles and Ellen 0 Donnell. It is the next day now and we have finally reached the last place of importance — the seashore. As we stroll along we see people in their bathing suits, swimming and suntanning along with the surfers. Further down the shore we notice a crowd of people waving, laughing, crying, and shouting. We learn that the Army officers, George Manninen and Gary Maynard are leaving for a mission in Arabia and that the Air Force men, FJeil McMillan, Leslie Parris, Allen Wells, John May, Daniel Homan, and Joseph Gallant are leaving for new bases in Puerto Rico. Now we see a ship sailing in, bringing home the Navy men, Donald Butler, William Hic s, Lee Coddens, FJorman Chandler, Bernie Martin, Larry Murphy, William Driscoll, John Drago, and Michael Eliu who just finished fighting a battle in the Pacific. Others in the service who are fighting bravely for their country are Lloyd Kaplan, Stephen LeBaron, Manuel Silva, John Peabody, Donald Trull, David W al , FJicholas Tillas, Joe Peters, James Haidaza , and George Cerullo. Our tour of Gradsen City has come to an end. 1 hope the people and places will long be remembered by its visitors. Although Peabody offense barely outdid the PHS band this season in regard to imagination, the Tanners were “in” a good number of the losing ball games. But it was a 110% effort all season and no one can ask for more from the players. Peabody was not expected to be strong for the ’66 season, but the Tanners were in a rut before the season started, having to face the likes of Lowell, Lawrence, and Beverly in consecutive weeks. Considering the strength of Lowell and Lawrence, Coach Arthur Adamopoulos’ squad came through better than expected, falling just one touch ' down short in both contests. In the wild fray at Beverly’s Hurd Stadum, Peabody was tipiped 24 ' 22, but the Tanner offense jelled as Bill Murdock took over the quarterback post, leaving Don Trull free to move to the flanker spot. Soph Bill Dexter displayed his broken field running ability in this contest, jitterbugging 38 yards with a Murdock aerial for a touchdown. Peabody tasted one moment of glory in the victorious home opener against Lynn English, 22-0. Ralph Hudson and Bill Dexter, both sophomores, were outstanding in this ball game, giving the Tanners some semblance of order for the future. All PHS fans would rather forget what was to happen after the Lynn English victory. In the final five ball games, Peabody was outscored 142-8, although the contest at Gloucester was won in every way except on the scoreboard. But as said before, the boys gave a 110% effort all season long. Let’s take a look at some of the individuals on the squad. Co-Capt. Steve Begley, Jim Gauthier, Phil Hincman, Stu Chase, Brad MacGregor, “Oogie” May, and last, but certainly not least, Soph Rich McMillan, were an aggre- gation no ball carrier ran through consistently. This group did a fine job all season as Peabody gained a reputation for having one of the strongest forward walls on the North Shore. Dave Collette and Don Trull were consistent two- way performers all season for the Tanners at the end- flanker spot. Toting the mail fcr the Tanners were two “Mighty Mites,” Ernie Fritz and Stefan Costa. Considering their diminutiveness, they are the best two backs that can be found. Statistically, Fritz rushed for 284 yards while Costa picked up 264. Enough cannot be said about “Do-Everything” Co- Capt. Bill Murdock. Through his diligence, he was able to develop his talents at a number of positions, giving nothing less than his best effort every ' minute. Needless to say, there were many others, but due to space, they must forego the glory of seeing their names in print. 1966-1967 P.H.S. FOOTBALL Peabody Opponent Lynn Jamboree vs. Woburn 0 8 At Lowell 6 14 At Lawrence 6 12 At Beverly 22 24 Lynn English 22 0 St. John’s Prep 0 34 At Gloucester 8 12 Salem 0 34 Nashua, N. H 0 14 Saugus 0 48 HOCKEY This year, like the past few years, is one PHS hockey fans would rather forget. Fans have always won- dered why Hockey Coach Charlie Carlin is so gray at such an early age of 50, and this year they found out why. No one knew what to think after Peabody’s impres- sive Jamboree showings, but soon the Tanners settled down into the groove that has been reserved for Peabody for the past several seasons. But the fault belongs to no one. After two losses to open the regular season, Peabody’s fine goalie, “Scoreless Les” Parris, turned in two shutout ' performances over Lynn Classical, 3-0, and St. Mary’s, 1 - 0 . Peabody then absorbed three more losses, unable to “get going” offensively, before “Scoreless Les” came to the rescue again as the Tanners knotted Danvers, 0-0. In doing this, Parris shut out Danvers’ high scoring Albie Portelance. Two games later, Peabody tied up Woburn, 3-3. Peabody’s biggest moment came in the final game of the season against undefeated Gloucester. No, don’t jump to conclusions, Peabody didn’t beat Gloucester. What the Tanners did do is play to a scoreless deadlock with a team that averaged nearly four goals per game. The tie didn’t hurt the Fishermen, who finished 12-0-4 on the season, but it was an accomplishment. Overall, Peabody finished with a 2-11-3 mark. The Tanners still could not manage to pass Salem, who finished with a 4-11-1 record. But don’t despair, even thcugh Bunky MacGregor and Les Parris, and a host of others space prevents mention, will be lost to graduation, Peabody has a slew of fine skaters in the Junior and Sophomore ranks. If I remember correctly, that was said at the begin- ning of the 1966-67 season! BASKETBALL Everyone knew that the PHS basketball squad would be the brightest spot in the school ' s athletic picture from the beginning. The Tanners began the season as optimistic as a team could be. The mixture of “old and new” was unique, with two new coaches, Ed Curtin and Ed Hogan, to combine with eight returning veteran players. Only one member of the previous season’s starting five was lost to graduation. The front court trio of the McDonald brothers, Jim and Marc, and Paul Adamopoulos, was equal to any in the Essex County League. Peabody bolted out of the starting blocks, knocking off their first four opponents with comparative ease. Peaobdy took Lowell in the season opener, 65 ' 60, and followed that with a 61-54 win over Lynn Classical and a 69-48 massacre of Haverhill. In a non-league contest with Gloucester of the Northeast Conference, the Tanners rallied to win in the final four minutes, 70-65. In the first four games, it was evident that the McDonald brothers would take the Tanners a long way. But again it was the inevitable nemises from the east, Salem, that discovered Peabody ' s weakness — the inability to play against a “running” team. Salem Phil Raby “ran” the Witches to a 58-38 humiliation on the Tanners home court. Still, Peabody was in a favorable position. The Tanners followed this with a 60-55 win over Lawrence, and then became involved in one cf the more exciting frays of the ECL campaign. The Leather City boys took a little trip to Lynn English, whose quintet was accepted as one of the stronger units in the league. Peabody was shocked in the first three periods, but came back to knot the ball game 48-48 with seconds remaining. The Tanners had the ball game within their grasp in the final minutes, but could not take advantage of the breaks afforded them, and with four seconds on the clock, the Lynner’s Alan Browne scored and that was the story, 50-48. This game was followed by a 52-36 less to undefeated Beverly, who was considered virtually invincible. After the loss to the Panthers, Peabody got back on the track with four straight victories, highlighted by Junior Marc McDonald ' s vault into the ECL scoring lead. But guess who spoiled the plans? Going into the second game with Salem, Peabody needed three wins in the final five games to qualify for a berth in the Tech Tourney. Getting down to the facts, Peabody had to defeat one of the league leaders, Salem, English, or Beverly. Peabody gave the Witches their toughest battle of the year, but came out on the short end, 64-62, after a midcourt shot by Marc McDonald was ruled no good at the buzzer. We all know the story of that game, so I won ' t belabor the situation. Now Peabody could afford only one more loss and still preserve their Tech Tourney hopes. But, alas, the hopes were given a serious jolt “up the line at Lawrence, as Peabody dropped a game to the lowly Lancers, 78-71. The Tanners were now forced to upset the league- leading, undefeated Beverly club, plus Lynn English. Peabody had no trouble gaining revenge over Lynn English on the home court, 48-36, but the Panthers were another story. Although losing, as expected, to the Panthers, Peabody gave them their biggest scare of the season, leading them at the half, 24-20. This could have been termed the surprise of the ECL season. However, Beverly came back in the second half behind Bobo Carr and Tim Colby to roll to an easy 20 point win. 59-39. This loss knocked Peabody out of the running for a Tech Tourney berth. A few days later, Peabody mopped up the season with a dull win over Saugus, 64-54. It seemed like the only spectators that night were the loyal janitors. In addition to the regular classes during the school day, an Intramural Sports Program was begun. Pictured is the winning boy’s team, the Colts from House B, and a girls’ team. Teams were also organized in volleyball, golf, and softball. In the year to come, these programs will be expanded and Peabody High will have a physically fit student body. Afterword The word Meta means “after,” and in a sense this entire yearbook is an afterword. It is an afterword to four wonderful high school years, three spent at the old high school, and one at the new high school. The staff of the Meta has tried to preserve some of the many wonderful memories which the four years have given us. We hope that we have produced a book which you will look through during the coming years with pride and happiness. We are sincerely grateful to our Literary Advisor, Mr. Thomas Callahan, and our Financial Advisor, Miss Mary Luz. We close with best wishes to the Class of 1967 for happy, healthy, and successful lives.
