Miss McLaughlin That ' s a darn good question. Dedication Through both trying and winsome moments her understanding and companionship have captured the admiration and affection of all. In deep appreciation of her supreme patience at these, the most crucial years of our lives, we, the class of 1966, sincerely dedicate our Meta to Miss Mary E. Luz. Foreword Throughout our high school years we have formed many friend- ships and participated in many worthwhile activities as a class. It is the purpose of our high school yearbook to preserve these personal bonds and capture those fond experiences in a permanent record. It is altogether fitting that we should do this, for our class is unique in many respects. Its undying spirit of unity has never faltered through the transition period of our student body during double sessions. It is you, the graduating class of 1966, that have made our efforts worthwhile. We sincerely present to you an everlasting reminder of these wonderful past four years — The Meta. In a number of years when this book is in the attic and our children look through it on some rainy day, this mind of ours will still have many vivid recollections of the four important years we had spent at Peabody High. Grammar school was over and we had finally made it to high school. It felt strange being able to sleep till 10 o’clock in the morning on a school day and then on the first day seeing so many “kids,” knowing that we would spend so much time together but thinking it would probably take forever to get to know them. We didn’t get any of the “razzing” we had heard about from the upper classmen because from 12:20 till 4:53 every day we had the whole school to ourselves. Bulletins went up around the school that there was to be a Review sponsored by the graduating class of “63”. Rehearsal would be held on Sunday afternoons. “Bye Bye Birdie” was a tremendous success and even though we, who took part, can’t take much credit, it was still a great deal of fun. During our freshman year we got our first taste of an assembly. The upperclassmen who were members of the Student Council sponsored an assembly during our first period. We were then introduced to the most impor- tant governing organization of the school. Then came the football rallies. What an emotional release — to be able to scream out as loud as we could in the hallowed halls of P.H.S.! Then came our sophomore year. It seems as if we had been competing with winter darkness since we started at P.H.S. During our fros ' h years it was dark when we came out. The following three years it was still dark when we went in. As sophomores we were finally able to meet some upperclassmen. What a “royal pain” it was to climb every day to our homeroom on the third floor. But it was almost worth it. We got out of school at 12:00 ins tead of 5:00. During our second year at P.H.S. we learned not to get candy, during class, in the machine outside 205. As soon as the dime was deposited and the selection made, Miss Luz would summon the candy fiend into her room and inform him of the evil act he had com- mitted. We learned from his experience to pick up the candy at 12:05. Then came our junior year. This year held three important events. First of all we were going to get our rings. It was hard to believe wasn’t it? Secondly came our junior hop. Ah yes! It would probably be a task for that amazing mind I mentioned to recall that night. After all, it wasn’t what we could call an outstanding business success, was it? La t, but certainly not least, came the Junior Prom. Tickets were sold, arrangements made, and maps distributed. The night finally came. “The Junior Class of Peabody High School cordially invites you to Wonderland By Night,” on Friday evening, May 28. 1965 at 7:00 p.m. Castle Hill. Ipswich. Dancing 8 - 12 . Will any of us ever forget that beautiful night? Clear, warm. It did turn out to be a Wonderland By Night where every girl felt like a Cinderella and every boy a Prince Charming. Then we were seniors. Yet. we could not have our own way. Especially at the football games. As juniors when we were cheering up in the stands, we couldn’t hold the letters because we were underclassmen. As seniors we couldn’t hold them because the Juniors had elected themselves “Super Official Type Pep Squad Leaders.” Oh well!?!? Christmas cheer was spreading and the Christmas Ball was on its way. On the cold crisp night of the ball many seniors arrived late, having visited New Hampshire before they turned back. Time rolled (or was it “dragged”) by and we started Senior music. Most of the music sessions convinced us that we could never qualify for the “Mamas and Pappas” but we did enjoy being excused from classes. One more happy little memory was our hardly ample parking facilities, the side of the school and the Legion. Spaces were always unavailable after any snow- fall. But things worked out and all’s well now. Before our graduation we had more important things to do such as attending meetings, finding a parking place or passing a test. Now there were plans to make, people to meet and prayers to say. There were careers to plan and families to raise. As high school graduates we learned that tomorrow meant much more than passing in a map book, for tomorrow is a judgment, a decision and we had to make ourselves worthy of this opportunity to beeome well-rounded citizens. Sports Round - Up FOOTBALL Dullea carries for a seven yard gain. He bucks the line again, this time for eight. Trull passes to Danish, “Touchdown”. Once more the Tanner fans are treated to a come-from-behind victory. The Blue and white set a winning trend for their first six games and rate near the top of Class “A”, with hopes for a state crown. Arch rival Salem has other ideas and spoils the Tanners’ unblemished record. Two more losses and Peabody finishes six and three. Disappointing? hardly, a great record for a great team. CROSS COUNTRY A gentle autumn breeze blows listlessly across Emerson Park. “Take your mark, get set, go.” Captain Gary Kolonovich finishes first with Makela and Brown close behind. The Blue and White harriers give an all-out effort and are well rewarded. The season is long and greater things are certainly in store. Peabody leads late in the third period and victory seems assured. The Tanners play fine hockey and give an all-out effort in every game. Unfortunately, competition is just too tough and the Blue and White pucksters win four and tie two. BASKETBALL “Swish, bang, around the rim and in,” with these familiar expressions, the Tanner hoopsters find themselves in the midst of an exciting basketball season. The desire and hustle to win are there, but unfortunately the Tanners cannot click and finish low on the official victory scale. They provided us with many thrilling moments with their superlative efforts. BASEBALL The arrival of spring brings many things; longer days, budding trees and the crack of a bat. “Play ball,” shouts an anxious umpire and Emerson Park comes alive after a long lonely winter. There is a star studded lineup led by Captain Mike Black. T1 le Ta nners are ready, and the fans are set for the start of the game.
