This book, designed to make reminiscing a nostalgic delight, hopefully represents the true and living story of the class of ' 63. So ideally was the title Meta given to our yearbook that in each of its literal meanings, among, along with, after, behind, it inspires a picture in our minds and in our hearts of our school as only we can see it. AMONG each other we have made true friendships, ALONG WITH each other we have experienced infinite joys, yet AFTER we have departed from Peabody High School, we shall cherish these memories, for, BEHIND us we have left a part of our lives, a part of ourselves, and we hope, a lasting impression. It is in this spirit that we, the class of 1963, proudly present this our Meta. DEDICATION With great pleasure we dedicate the 1963 Meta to Thomas Francis McCarthy. Through his spontaneous smile and jovial manner he has endeared himself to students and faculty alike. Whether instructing a class, discussing a math problem, or merely talking with a friend, he displays a genuine concern for others and a lively interest in their ideas. Though he possesses a superior knowledge of mathematics, he nevertheless encourages his students to solve their questions through personal endeavor. Thus he awakens the quest for learn- ing so necessary for true accomplishment. His class, while being highly instructive, is also one conducted on a mutual level of friendship and understanding. By his constant example of perseverance in studies and devotion to the school, he has guided many students toward success. Mr. McCarthy is an alumnus as well as a member of the faculty. Having graduated from Peabody High School, he is naturally well-acquainted with it from both viewpoints, that of student as well as that of teacher. He received his A.B. degree from Boston College in 1925 and the following year earned his A.M. degree there. He immediately returned to Peabody in November, 1926 to teach English at the high school. Since then he has been not only a mathematics teacher, but also as of 1943, the head of that department. However, Mr. McCarthy ' s interests do not lie purely in the academic side of the student. For ten years, from 1951 until 1961, he coached the varsity track team. Along with his enthusiasm for this sport and his desire to aid the boys in developing into athletes was his encouragement when the victories were few or the spirit was low. Never failing to consider the individual talents of h is athletes, he was respected by all who participated with him in this sport. It is for these qualities of warmth, vitality, humility, and devotion that we shall remember him. And it is for these sarna qualities that we, with greatest respect, admiration, and gratitude dedicate this Meta to Thomas Francis McCarthy. ADMINISTRATION MR. ARTHUR J. BARRY Principal MR. As tradition dictates, a freshman is one devoid of individuality yet possessed by a strong desire to please. The class of ' 63 was no exception to this rule. In this capacity we directed our eagerness toward faculty and upperclassmen, while we held the development of latent talents as the forerunner to the unity we were yet to realize. Thus, as we first experienced the rugged exams and saw the results of our labor, and the surmounting re- sponsibilities ahead, we discoved the academic side of high school. But there was equally as much enjoyment to be had from our new importance. Our voices rang loud and clear, at every football game as did our faces shine the day our freshman pictures took their place in the records of our school. Perhaps we will have to laugh when we think of the first encounter with the unbelievable cafeteria, the study periods when, as freshmen, we really thought they were a place to tackle our homework, and the outing to Canobie Lake with the roller coaster that separated the men from the boys. It is for each of us to find the proper place in our memories for these events for they personify the feelings of every person venturing into a new phase of his life. Soon the way was elear and we saw light and truth around us and we were uplifted . . . In this our second year of high school we began to reach out with less uncertainty, we tasted of success, and enriched our greatest desires. We had been sophomores for such a short while and were just beginning to get used to the old place when the workmen arrived. Almost immediately, before our very eyes, the simple wooden desks and chairs of room 107 gave way to a beautifully paneled and impressively spacious guidance office. From the new facilities and the ever-growing guidance staff a much needed student- minded organization evolved. This Guidance Club was necessitated by the increasing enrollment at our high school and served to augment the resources of the new department. It was November, I960 when we first reaped the re- wards of being upperclassmen, for as the bells tolled the beginning of the freshmen departmental examinations, we the class of ' 63 sat complacently in our homerooms exchanging grins of smugness and ease. But, as the adage goes — He who laughs last, laughs best. So, late in March, when we spent three agonizing days struggling with the Iowa Tests on Educational Development, those freshmen had their revenge and then some. The next two months brought that nemesis of all stu- dents — spring fever. Following a normal period of con- valescence, we were forced into the harsh world of final examinations, which marked the end of our second year in high school. The following summer was compar- able to half time in an athletic contest for we went out for a pep talk and returned with renewed eagerness to come out winners. We neared the end of the road and lifted our faees to God , like awakened buds on our parental trees, and strove forward toward the sun and the sky and all that is good . . . With this, the time for fun and frolic upon us, and we, so eager to drink in every detail, the class never ceased celebrating from the time of the impressive elec- tions to the ego-building Junior Day. Early in October, after brushing up on our Parliamentary Procedure, we held our elections and when the results were disclosed, our well-qualified and equally well-supported officers set to work on what was destined to be a great year. The Junior Hop, our first dance, truly indicated the role of success which we were to play in P.H.S. history. Soon afterward commotion seemed to be the keyword as first we were measured for and finally received OUR fabulous class rings. Their arrival served not only as the status symbol of the high school, but also as the sobering effect on all who wore them, for they represented a bond of friendship and understanding among us. The initial thrill subsided and we settled down to the work that was to reward us when, as a class we experienced real pride in those among us who were accepted in the National Honor Society. Time literally flew and before we knew it the blustery breezes of May heralded the fast approaching end of our third year at P.H.S. But try to keep a good class down . . . On a hot, sticky Saturday morning we plodded to various test centers to thrill to these long-anticipated College Boards, only to find that they were even better?? than we had expected. Just a short week later, we stag- gered the onlookers at the Hotel Hawthorne as we held the biggest and bestest coming out party ever, our Junior Prom. The boys were eager, the girls were eager, and IT WAS REALLY GREAT! Finally glory was ours. We reigned supreme as the acting seniors of the stu- dent body, when on Junior Day, the joy of Bermuda shorts in classes, outlandish hats, and no books!! provided the perfect ending to a perfect year. Suddenly our way seemed short and narrow, as in the distanee we saw a bigger road, and onee again we were bewildered and afraid, afraid of falling and being blown into a dark and very distant forest where others like us had been seat- tered. The light was there, but we were young, so worn, and yet, so blind . . . At the outset of our senior year we faced double ses- sions with mixed emotions. Though we were unanimously in favor of twelve o ' clock dismissal, we were nevertheless fearful that the trimmings of senior life might be fore- gone. However, it wasn ' t long before our fears were allayed for, after having witnessed the unsurp assed dis- play of enthusiasm at the football games, there was no doubt in our minds that nothing could dampen our spirit. Through the combined efforts of Mr. Barry, the student council, the cheerleaders, and a number of enterprising seniors, the first successful boys ' cheering section was organized. The numerous assemblies held toward this end strengthened the feeling between player and spectator and evidenced the accomplishments of this inner core of enthusiasts. Fantastic goodfortune befalls only fantastic classes — and thus with the vote cast in the elections to support OUR STORY them our superlative class officers set out to finish prov- ing that this was truly a fantastic class. Having a tre- mendous football victory to inspire us, we turned out in record number at the Senior Barn Dance to pay tribute to the athletes who were on their way to a successful and very exciting season. With a mere two feet of unoccupied space in the entire South School Gym, we had to fight for the room to display our twisting talents as the band played on and on and . . . Soon cries of Jingle Bells and Santa Claus filled the air as the time for our Christ- mas Ball rapidly approached. The theme-Blue Christmas, the Place — West Memorial School, the result — A merry Christmas to all and to all a good night. Could this really be us? So many times we had heard the same announcement made, yet this was different. It was we who were to be measured for caps and gowns! Although we did not actually view our graduation attire we knew that this was the beginning of endless prepara- tions for the big day. In rapid succession we seniors journeyed to Gainsboro Studios to pose for our official yearbook pictures. For the first time in our short lives a photographer had suc- ceeded in capturing our truly beautiful selves. Mr. Gins- burg was more than willing to repay the visit when he arrived at P.H.S. with staff and equipment to catch us in our natural habitude. April vacation passed as we offered predictions as to which seniors would comprise our own gold-tassel group. At the honor grad assembly, during the third week of April, these deserving students realized the rewards of continued diligence in their studies throughout their high school career. Soon shouts of Encore! , Bravo! , and That ' s my Billy! resounded in the auditorium as the drama season came upon P.H.S. Most of us wouldn ' t have believed that there was such an abundance of talent concealed in the personages who made up the casts of our two theatrical classics, See How They Run , an English farce presented by the Dramatic Guild under the dedicated direction of Mr. Robert Cavanaugh and the Senior Class Revue, Bye Bye Birdie, a broadway musical so ably directed by Mr. William Russell and Miss Mary Anne Nally. How- ever, having viewed both of these student productions, we were convinced that Broadway had nothing on us. As we approached the culmination of four years in ole P.H.S. the entire class relived Junior Day, but this time with an unmistakable senior flair, a flair brought about by the knowledge that this was to be our last big splash in the eyes of the underclassmen and a universal desire to make it a memorable day. A great Senior Day it was, and will doubtless long remain as such, in the annals of our Alma Mater. The Senior Class of Peabody High School cordially invites you to their Senior Reception to be held at the New Ocean House on Tuesday evening, June 4, 1963 from nine to one with music provided by Bob Adams and his orchestra. The acquisition of this invitation opened the door to the biggest social event of the season. This was the one to which we had looked forward for so long, this evening of dining and dancing in the breath-taking atmosphere of the plush Red Room. What better way to illustrate the fact that we were about to embark upon adult life and that the transitory element of high school is one which furnishes memories and creates lasting friendships? We had all attended graduation practice that morn- ing and were excited with the thought of Sunday ' s events, when on Thursday evening, the sixth of June, we traced our now familiar steps into the auditorium to break bread with each other at the Senior Banquet. After eating we danced and talked, talked about things which somehow we hadn ' t been able to say at the Reception because of the formality of the setting, but to which the seemingly ingenuous surroundings of the gym were so conducive. Some outsider might have called it childish prattle, but to us it was of great importance, for at this our last informal assemblage we were able to open up our hearts to each other, we were all in the same situation, we were all going to graduate in just three short days. We spoke of finally realizing how much these years had meant to us, of how we wanted to stay friends forever, and gener- ally of how we hated to leave. It was a great tribute to the school, to the faculty, and especially to the great- est Senior class anywhere. June 9, 1963 — Commencement Day Up to now it has been relatively easy to bring back the wonderful recollections of the events leading up to this day. We have been able to enjoy these remem- brances together with the knowledge that there was al- ways something more to which we could look forward, some other occasion from which previous senior classes somewhat like us had drawn much happiness and many, many memories and into which we as students would in- evitably proceed. But, graduation, though failing to change our outlook on life is nevertheless the official termination of our carefree days. Commencement, so mechanical in its ceremony and so universal in its oc- currence, has a singular effect on every participant. In some it arouses joy, but to most it brings that perplexity springing from the mingled emotions of joy, in the eager anticipation of the future, of fear, of the unwanted in- dependence of adult life, and of sadness, in relinquishing the happiness of the past. This date marks the end of a phase of our life and yet only the beginning of a much greater one. No single event could ever eliminate the feelinqs developed and the memories cherished over the past four years, it rather endears them to us for now they are part of a closed chapter in the long book of life. Crisis. So seems life at this point ivitli no road left for as to follow , with such great temptation to turn hack to the memories ice have made en route , with seemingly nothing to sustain us in our ouest into the future. We have been carefree , blown along the road by the soothing breezes of life , and tve have seen much , and we have learned. Now the breezes have grown turbulent and they are no longer soothing , but harsh. Here we must assume greater responsibilities and move ahead. Here we are met with a crisis. Somewhere in the vast future there is a place for each of us , one with your name and one with mine. To reach that place is our aim. When we have found it , the crises that lay beyond will be few and we will be happy! The cry of modern man, so well known to us, the class of ' 63, seems our only consolation as we prepare to leave the hallowed halls of Peabody High School behind us forever, and with our going bid adieu to a major part of our lives, our great high school years. But, we cannot become stagnant like a dammed up river, for we, too, have new twists and jetties to encounter in our river of life. Thus, it is with a sincere realization of the future and a deep thankfulness to our creator for our many pleasant memories that we make ready to leave Peabody High School — to leave, but never to forget.
