ADMINISTRATION To the Class of 1962 we extend our sincere congratulations and best wishes on the attainment of a primary goal in your lives — your graduation from High School. The twelve short years during which we were privileged to provide you with the basic foundation for your future endeavors are bu t one stage in the never ending quest for knowledge. As you go forth to pursue your separate ways, may you always be mindful of the devotion and sacrifices of your parents and the dedicated interest in you and your success on the part of your teachers, whose interest you may amply repay by leading lives of honor and integrity. May I also extend to you the assurance that my office is always available to you for counsel and advice in whatever manner I can be of assistance to you. J. HENRY HIGGINS Superintendent of Schools Assistant Superintendents WILLIAM WELCH, JR. J. PAUL VERONESE Congratulations to the class of 1962. I have enjoyed working with this class and it is with deep regret that I bid you farewell. The year has been one of pleasant memories. You have my sincere wishes for success and happiness in your future endeavors. timothy McCarthy Vice-Principal To the Class of 1962: May I exercise the privilege of your principal in offering you my sincere wishes for future deserv- ing happiness. At this particular time, as you join the many who are sharing similar joys of achievement, may I remind you that with recognition there is respon- sibility. You are the hope of America, and my associa- tion with you, and others like you, has justified my confidence in the future of our great and glorious country. Long after those of my generation have been, you will be, and America, our country, will be just what you want it to be. This is your heritage but it is also your challenge. Accept it willingly and fulfill it courageously. Always live and act with a pride in a country of which all of us can be rightfully proud. This ideal depends upon the use of your intelligence and especially your integrity. In your happiness be ever humble and remember those who are less fortunate. The boundaries of sacrifice and service must be limitless and extended so that the whole wide world will share our blessings and admire us not through selfish conquest but rather through selfless charity. Perhaps the key word to this concept of a happy life is dedication, — one of the richest and most rewarding wrods in our language. Nobody has symbolized it more than your devoted parents. Never forget them for they will never forget you. They are yours and you are their most priceless possession. Now, farewell! The pleasure of your association the past four years will always be one of my many happy memories. Most sincerely, ARTHUR J. BARRY Principal : FACULTY ENGLISH Mr. Arthur V. PEABODY HIGH SCHOOL BAND BATON SQUAD HISTORY OF While our cramped fingers filled out programs in triplicate, and carried heavy loads of books from class to class, we were astonished at how quickly our glamorous image of high school had disappeared. Nineteen fifty-eight-fifty-nine was a year of firsts, not only for us freshmen, but also for P.H.S. Student Government was intro- duced, and we were privileged to elect members of our class to represent us on the Student Council. The eagerly anticipatd Civics Club outing finally arrived, and on a warm, sunny day in June we were excused from classes for the trip to Canobie Lake. Our sophomore year held many s vation of our high school, the popular first (but not last) bomb scare, and the ing freshmen. Upperclassmen at last! After Junior class officers had been elected, the Junior Hop became the first on a long list of successful activities. It seemed an eternity before our class rings arrived, but the long wait was forgotten as we proudly exhibited them to envious underclassmen. May 26, 1961 — Last minute shopping and money-raising were finished, and in a matter of hours the excited, talkative girls, and self-conscious, nervous boys were transfigured into graceful and serene young men and women on the night of our Junior Prom. Opening night found our dramatically talented juniors taking the lead roles in The Egg and I . A Broadway comedy could never have had a more enthusiastic audience. Bermudas, sunglasses, and book-laden scene for Junior Day. We were overwhelmed in the very near future we would be seniors. The beginning of the end of our high school years, September, 1961. At the Senior Barn Dance, our first activity after the election of officers, we discovered that new members had been added to the cheering squad. We caught our first glimpse of graduation on the morning that we lined up to be measured for caps and gowns. Most of our underclassmen set the by the realization that urprises including the reno- Navy Band assembly, our admiring glances of idoliz- CLASS OF 1962 leisure time was spent filling out complicated applications to our future schools. We nervously kept our appointment at Gainsboro Studio and were relieved when we saw the final result! Senior Yo-Yo Day caused much excitement throughout the corridors. As the boys displayed their unusual skills, the girls watched curiously, clutching their lollipops and lunchboxes. We all had fun trying to tell the truth at the hilarious Observer Assembly. The inclement weather did not dampen our spirits on the evening of the Christmas Ball. We complimented each other on our attractive apparel, and awaited the highlight of the evening — the crowning of the queen. As usual, we weren ' t disappointed with the performance of the Navy Band at one of our last assemblies. It had us clapping our hands and tapping our feet to everything from classical music to rock and roll. Senior Day found us once again arriving at school wearing bermudas and sunglasses, with unthinkable tasks in our minds for the underclassmen. As we lined up for graduation rehearsals, we realized how far we were from the beginning, and how intimately close we were to the end. Learning to march, sing, speak, listen for cues to sit down and stand up, were among the last lessons that we acquired from our capable instructors at Peabody High. One of the happiest recollections of our Senior year was the class banquet. The unusual setting provided a festive mood and the evening was enjoyed by all. The last social event of our high school years, unlike any other, had an atmosphere of relaxation, familiarity, and sadness. As we ate, danced, talked, and sang at our Senior Reception, we enjoy- ed the company of the many friends that we had met during the past four eventful years. Graduation exercises found us unaware of the present. Only the fading past and the impending future dominated our thoughts. And now that we have graduated — Perhaps these things will prove a source of future pleasure — Virgil. JUNIOR DAY Just call me Lonesome Lou. Togetherness. You should see second lunch! For the insignificant sum of twenty-five cents, the Juniors bought the privilege of wearing bermudas for the entire school day. Also included in the fee was the exclusive services of the underclassmen. A ‘common sight was a tiny Freshman obediently carrying the massive volumes of a dignified Junior. They told us to relax, so . . . Everybody had fun. JUNIOR PROM Her Majesty the Queen, Marylin Cham- pagne, and her escort, William Laakso. The rain outside could not dampen the loveliness of the girls or the wonderfully romantic spirits of their escorts, on the evening of the Junior Prom. A Stair- way to the Stars it was, and will be fondly remem- bered in our hearts always. The Queen and her court, left to right: Cheryl Tedford, Iris Goldstein, Cynthia Walmsley, Marylin Champagne, Marie Kulakowski, Barbara Van Dyke, and Elaine Harrigan. THE EGG AND I On May !2, 1961, under the direction of Mrs. Dunn, members of the Class of ’62 had the leading roles in the production of The Egg And I Set on a rural egg farm, miles from nowhere, the cast succeeded in providing the audience with an enjoyable evening of entertainment. SENIOR BARN DANCE SENIOR BARN DANCE Saturday, October 28, the Senior Class held its annual Senior Barn Dance as the first of their fund-raising activities. The Elgin® provided the music for dancing and M.C., Jimmy Murphy, joined a few enthusiastic senior boys in helping the cheerleaders promote school spirit. Who said he was a size nine?
