THE META Class of ic) f2 Peabody High School Page Two META Peabody High School FOREWORD Four fleeting years have sped past and we are faced with the long awaited day of our gradua- tion from high school. Reflection upon the accomplishments of the last four years in Peabody High School must bring to all of us the realization of the debt we owe to her who has guided us and protected us and nourished us during the formative days of our youth. All that Alma Mater symbolizes to us, to those who have preceded, and to those who are to follow, will be brought viv- idly to mind in the years to come. Enough, for the present, to say that we are young and impressionable, and the full import of what our high school has done for us will register on only a few of our youthful minds. We have, perhaps, in many cases taken high school for granted, giving little thought during this period of our lives to all that our parents, our taxpayers, our city have done for us in furnishing us with the means by which we might better prepare for the work in life that is to be ours. As the time approaches when we shall forever leave these hallowed halls, we have the feeling that we do not wish our happy high school days to end. We would halt Father Time in his inex- orable march and try to hold indefinitely those happy hours that we have enjoyed here among our school companions, our friends of the present and of the future. But Time has a way of moving swiftly on, giving no heed whatsoever to the wishes of any man, and because we hope to preserve some of the memories of these happy days we have prepared our Year Book, our META of 1942, in the sincere hope that as we turn the pages in the years to come, vivid memories of the days that were will be brought back, crystal clear, to our minds, and we, all of us of the Class of ' 42, will live again the happiest days of our lives. ALMA MATER Page Four META Peabody High School MISS HELEN D. Although there is no one among us who has not had from all of its members advice and counsel, as well as the matter pre- sented in their various classes, it is true that many of us are not fully aware of the helpful assistance and encouragement which they have given us so generous- !y- A high school as an educational institution can be no better than its fac- ulty and its student body. The efficiency of the faculty in presenting the sub- ject matter of the various courses and the willingness of the student body to ac- cept that material and use it profitably and painstakingly — these are two of the factors which determine the place that the school will occupy as an educational institution. With regard to our Peabody High School faculty we need say no more than that each and every member has at all times been faithful in safe- guarding and furthering our scholastic interests. It may be that there are some among us who have not fully realized what )ur teachers have done for us in the years that are now drawing to a close. We here express the hope that in the years to come they will, upon reflection, come to the realization, an appreciative realization, of the part our teachers have played in fostering the ideals which will make us good citizens of tomorrow. George Almeida Jennie Petropolous Helen Sargent Ruth Lopes ' Twas A Howling Success” Peabody High School META Page One Hundred and Nine THE DRAMATIC GUILD Four years ago, when the members of the class of ’42 were but freshmen, the Peabody High School Dramatic Guild was of- ficially organized. In the scholastic year 1936-37 Mr. D. Edward Gorman had produced two plays, One Mad Night” and An- other Mad Night,” but at that time there was no organized guild. It was in our freshman year that the first meeting was held with an initial membership of sixty-five members, twenty of whom were members of the class of ’42. At that first meeting a constitution was drawn up and officers elected. The first performance staged by the Guild was a one-act play presented at a Christmas assembly in 1937. Later in the same school year The Music Box” was presented by a cast of boys and girls from every class, without benefit of scenery or curtain. Since that first attempt, the Dramatic Guild has presented eight three- act plays and several one-act plays. Last year the Guild, with the assistance of Mr. Welch and Mr. Barry, obtained some scenery and a curtain of its own with the end in view of giving to the mem- bers some of the equipment that might make their work even more effective. The members have during the past two years taken several trips to Boston to witness plays and movies, including Fantasia” and My Sister Eileen, and have taken two all day excursions to historic Provincetown. Among the members of our Class of ' 42 who have been prominent in the work of the Guild and in the various produc- tions are Edward Kozwich, Caroline Bliss, Marion Staples, Philip Bresnahan, Lawrence Essember, Loretta LaPointe, Hope Hardy, Leona LeBlanc, Florence Bulygo, Phyllis Small and Lorraine Kas- par. To Miss Hallahan, Mr. Lynch, Mr. Welch and Mr. Barry the Guild owes a deep debt of gratitude, for without their help it would have been difficult indeed fo r the Guild to have produced even a single play with any prospect for outstanding success. It was their many acts of helofulness that encouraged us to do our bit to win for our Peabody Guild a foremost place among high school dramatic organizations. The one outstanding factor, however, that contributed most to our signal success through the years is the perseverence, the hard work, the enthusiasm of the founder of the Guild, our popu- lar director, D. Edward Gorman. His knowledge of, and his ability to teach, the dramatic skills, his patience, his unfailing in- terest in us and in our work constituted the difference between failure and success. To him the members of the Guild will be ever grateful. M. S. PEABODY HIGH SCHOOL BAND PEABODY HIGH SCHOOL ORCHESTRA JUNIOR OFFICERS, CLASS OF 1943 5 c lUo r Peabody High School META Page One Hundred and Fifteen CLASS DIARY September 3, 1941 — Today’s the day! We ' re SENIORS! And we don’t care much who knows it! We’ve waited long and impatiently for this day of days, and now that it’s here we are going to take full advantage of the honors and the privileges that go with seniorhood. How we’ll lord it over those underclassmen as we recall the slights and indignities that were heaped upon us as we toiled and struggled through those long and arduous days when we were freshmen, and sophomores and juniors. The day is one we’ll always look back on with mingled emo- tions. We’re on the last lap (most of us) and if we look seri- ously ahead of us to that distant day in June when we will re- ceive the rewards of our labors, some of us will undoubtedly begin to wonder if high school hasn’t been rather kind to us; we’ll pon- der over the mooted question of whether ’tis better to go out and face the cruel world or live sheltered lives within the four friendly walls of good old Peabody High. What happened today? Nothing too strenuous! We got our home rooms and the kindly school officials have done their best to make everybody happy by placing all of us within easy call of our friends. We visited our subject teachers who greeted us with cordial smiles, passed out our texts for the coming months, and then proceeded to pour it on” with assignments for the mor- row. They looked us over with a shrewd eye; and we did a little lookin g ourselves. And the battle is on. September 10 — End of the first week. We’re still running strong, and as yet there have been no casualties. We’re trying hard to make a good impression. Only thirty-nine weeks to go to graduation! September 18 — Today the class of 1942 performed the important duty of voting in our class officers for this, our last year within the portals of dear old Peabody High. We are firmly of the conviction that we showed excellent judgment in se- lecting the following to lead us safely through senior year : President, Walter Zielski; Vice-President, Florence Bulygo; Secretary, Edith DiCroce; and Treasurer, Richard Marts. Under their guidance we expect to carry on in the accepted manner and leave behind us a record of achievement unsur- passed in the annals of the Blue and White. October 1— Today we go to the polls again for the purpose of sele cting home room representatives. To keep us in touch with senior activities and to voice our wishes in the inner councils we select Fred Emmett, Lawrence Essember, Hope •Hardy, Anna May Linehan, Steve Themes and John Wood- bury. These officers give us the imposing total of ten, tried and true, to lead us through a successful and memorable year. October 13 — The gang got together tonight for the first social of the year, the annual Senior Barn Dance. With the dec- orations predominantly Hallowe’enish, those who attended this first function of the class of ’42 had little difficulty in getting into the spirit of the occasion. A good time was had by all. October 31 — Two months of senior year gone. We’re looking for- ward? ? ? to our first marks and we’re hoping for the best. November 6 — Gee, what’s that funny feeling we have in the pit of our stomach? Yes, you guessed it. We’re getting re- port cards today and some of us are not quite so assured. A little more attention to the serious business of school seems to be in order for the more unfortunate among us. Better luck next term — we hope! ! ! November 12 — Parent-Teachers’ Night. Tonight’s the night when our mothers and fathers will find out the truth about us. Mr. So-and-so is always picking on me” and Miss So-and-so doesn’t like me” will have their innings tonight. This is one evening we hope we will be tucked in for the night when mother and dad arrive home. November 19 — We prepare to celebrate an early Thanksgiving. Four days off from school. Time to enjoy ourselves, eat plenty of turkey, and then return to school to study harder than ever? ? ? ? as we look forward to Christmas. REMEMBER OUR JUNIOR PROM? Peabody High School META Page One Hundred and Seventeen November 27 — New York, here they come! Today the football squad, the band, the cheer leaders, and a small cheering sec- tion leave for the week-end at White Plains. The entire student body, the teachers and sundry others are out to see them off and wish them luck. December 10 — Our illustrious thespians, under the able direction of Mr. Gorman, thrill an enthusiastic audience tonight with an excellent production of A Howling Success.” Too bad the talent scouts from Hollywood and Broadway were not among those present! But then, some of our shining lights might not have been able to finish out their school careers. December 7 — The tragedy of Pearl Harbor. And within two days our nation is at war with the Axis powers. We wonder what effect the war will have on our plans for the future. December 19 — The fun we had today while we decorated the hall for our Christmas Ball. We’ll not soon forget this gala event of the year with the soft music and softer lights and all that necessarily accompanies a successful party of this kind. Nor will we soon forget the happy occasion of the party we gave to the first-graders” who came to see Santa Claus in the person of our popular Mr. Brawley. Then came the interlude of Christmas in which we were given the time to recuperate. January 5, 1942 — We return to school for the last happy days of our school careers. This is OUR YEAR! May we make the most of it! Naturally we’re glad to be back, but we might be a little happier about it all if it were not for those mid-year examinations that loom up before us. Well, bring them on! January 15 — Did we shine today! Today we subject ourselves to what promises to be an annual physical check-up. Most of us, of course, were found to be perfectly normal although what our teachers think may be an entirely different matter. We’re young, though; we’re perfectly normal physically; and we’re quite happy and content with our outlook on life in general. The physical examination did cost us a period here and there, but we managed to survive. January 30 — Mid-years! ! ! ! ! Why say more? February 16 — No school today. Registration day for all between the ages of 20 and 44. None of us were quite old enough to register in the draft, but we got the holiday while others signed up to defeat the Japs. Days like this bring home to all of us the seriousness of the situation confronting the nation. It probably won’t be long before many of us will be taking an active part in the defense of our country. We’ll be ready! February 17- — The occasion of OUR Strand Night. The opinion seems to be that the evening was a huge success. Some go even so far as to say that it is the very best of the Strand Nights, an occasion of which our entire Class of ’42 may justly be proud. Some of the outstanding bits of the evening were presented by Charlie McNiff, Lucy West, Nikki Sclavou- nos, Phil Bresnahan, John Bellew, Ed Wilchinski, Ed Koz- wich, Hope Hardy, John Woodbury, Walter Zielski, Jim Eagan, Bernice Bouchard, Florence Bulygo, Edith DiCroce, Bob Sanger, Betty Brown, Loraine Kaspar and others too nu- merous to mention. To all who contributed to the success of the evening a bouquet of orchids. February 26 — Our winter vacation begins. How we need it after a strenuous session with studies and other activities of our busy school lives. We’re sure of coming back more tired than ever, but that is, of course, no more than is to be ex- pected. March 20 — Today we get measured for caps and gowns. The ceremony, or perhaps the ordeal, or better still the plain measuring, took place in the office of Mr. O ' Connor, our popular boys’ physical ed” instructor. We feel that the end is fast approaching as we contemplate the handsome picture we’ll make on the night of graduation, all dressed up in our academic caps and gowns. A little more than two months to go. March 23 — Through the kindness of Jim” Lyons we were given the privilege of listening to the records of Maurice Evans in his Macbeth.” All English classes of Mr. McManus and Mr. Johnson attended class in Room 102 where we listened Page One Hundred and Eighteen META Peabody High School OUR CHRISTMAS BALL META Page One Hundred and Nineteen Peabody High School attentively to the lines of Macbeth as read by the Master Shakespearean actor. It is to be hoped that the play will mean even more to us now that we have heard the interpreta- tion of the famous passages of Macbeth by the great Evans. March 26 — The last of the group pictures for the Meta are taken. We’ve had quite a busy session with pictures and proofs and proofs and pictures! But taken now; the damage is done; and we’ll wait more or less patiently to see the results. March 26 — Honor parts are announced. Florence Grayton and Marion Staples are named valedictorian and salutatorian re- spectively. Congratulations are in order not only for Flor- ence and Marion but for the others of our class who won scholastic distinction by their excellent work during the four years at P. H. S. April 9 — The last of the assembly talks to girls on How to keep that school girl complexion.” We’ve had Fashions” and Charm” and Personality” and all of us, we are sure, are more attractive than ever. April 16 — Today is the final check on caps and gowns. All of us have been measured for the regalia which we’ll sport on the evening of graduation. And of course we’re confident that we’ll be the best looking class ever to assemble for a gradua- tion from Peabody High School. April 27 — Today we have another registration for the draft. And the rest of the week the school authorities are to be so busy with the beginning of our American system of rationing. Sugar is the first commodity to be rationed, but we’re advised that other items will be rationed in the near future. We’re beginning to realize that there really is a war in progress. May 8 — Friday afternoon, probably one of the most appreciated afternoons of the year, for today we begin our spring vaca- tion, the last vacation we seniors will enjoy during our days here at school. We intend to make the most of it and en- joy it to the utmost. And after our return to school we shall have only two or three weeks of class after which we shall prepare for the glorious event of graduation. May 18 — We return to school refreshed and ready for the last lap. It won’t be long now! May 21 — Only Thursday but it marks the continuation of our preparation in a musical way for graduation next month. We never before realized how musical we really are. Our music teacher never fully realized our musical talents either. June 10 — The event of the year — BANQUET! What an eve- ning! We do feel important when the guests of the eve- ning tell us of the part we are to play in saving the world after the chaos and confusion of war. We have a most en- joyable evening. We overeat, of course; but what can you expect of us who have been anticipating this event for so long? We’re hoping that none of us will suffer any ill ef- fects from our over-indulgence. The feature of the evening is the reading of the Class Prophecy and the Class Will. We ' re certainly headed for big things. June 13 — Finis! Slowly we march up the four steps to the plat- form where we are to receive the diplomas for which we have labored so long. It is with a feeling of regret that we realize that our days at P. H. S. are over and that the two hundred and forty of us that constitute the Class of 1942 are together for the last time. Most of us will, of course, attend the re- ception, but this is the last time we ' ll be together as a class. It’s been a happy four years. But it’s over. Time marches on! o Peabody High School META Page One Hundred and Twenty-one CLASS PROPHECY Time: 1952 Setting: Scene of Reunion of Class of ’42 FLASH! We are sorry to interrupt this broadcast, but German planes have been sighted three minutes outside Salem Willows Harbor. All are urged to take shelter immediately. At the sound of this warning the class of ’42, back after ten years for their first class reunion, abandoned their beautifully dec- orated banquet hall and proceeded to file in their usual manner (shoving and pushing as all ladies and gentlemen should) to the air raid shelter which is located directly beneath the scene of festivity. Donald Wallace of the A. R. P., in that forceful manner which so distinguishes him, now assumes control over the now hysterical class with his able assistants, Phil Campbell, Donald Driscoll and Paul Carney. High above, Alfred Murray, a lieu- tenant in the Army Air Corps, (WITH Patsye Keefe in the cock- pit), leads his gallant squadron consisting of such brave men as Eddie Wilchinski, John Foster, George Tevrowsky, George Maria, John McVann, Melvin Ossoff and Walter Koziski. Below, Jimmy Lawlor and George Lessard in charge of the anti-aircraft guns, give an imperative command which sends the guns into action against the enemy. In spite of the valiant efforts of these two units, the Messersmidts find their mark and rain destruction and cause cas- ualties on the surrounding countryside. However, these casualties are few and they are soon relieved altogether by such Red Cross Doctors and Nurses as George Rizzone, Bernice Ripley, Dick” Vontzalides, Alice Marques, Pete Retos and Muriel Geer, with Budd” Essember as Chief of Staff and Hope Hardy as Super- intendent of Nurses. As soon as order is restored in the shelter, we set about to collect the necessary material for Mr. Higgins’ volume, Who’s Who in the Class of ’42.” As we sift our way through the crowds of former classmates, we notice Lorraine Murphy sitting meditatively in a secluded corner trying to come to a decision be- tween Ray MacNeil, who looks so-oo-oo handsome in his Army Air Corps uniform and Warren Smith, who is reported to have a brand new retread tire stored away in his family vault. Betty Brown, unmindful of the falling bombs and shrapnel, can be seen receiving a rum and egg shampoo from those well-known beauti- cians, Barbara Devaney, Beatrice Zourelis and Rose Bonfanti. As an expression of her gratitude, Betty offers them the use of her gorgeous mink coat presented to her by her employer, John J. Woodbury, president of the firm J. J. Woodbury and Sons and Daughters and Company, Inc. Watching this situation is Phil Bresnahan, star reporter of his own column, What I See and You Miss,” (with John Bellew delicately holding his camera in focus), idly dictating to his two secretaries, Sophie Lachowicz and Betty Aldus, who are busily en- gaged in jotting down Phil’s rapid-fire comments on some of the celebrities who have returned to the class reunion. One of the notes concerns Flossie Bulygo, unforgettable star of Do It Again” or She Chased Him All Around the Town,” a four-star produc- tion with the roles of her ardent suitors acted to perfection by Bob Sanger and Eddie Goff. Other celebrities present are Wally Zielski, whose unsurpassable ability of kissing babies” has won him a position of renown as a prominent politician in the Massa- chusetts State Legislature; Alfred Surman, well known grid men- tor of Peabody High School’s Championship football team; Marion Staples, Peabody’s Eleanor Powell, who has superseded Hollywood ' s Eleanor Powell in the entertainment world; and Mirrp Lawrence and Kay Bliss, those famous fashion experts who are arguing (at MECHANICAL DRAWING OFFICE practice FAMILIAR SCENES Peabody High School META Page One Hundred and Twenty-three present) as to whether or not skirts will be one or two inches shorter in the fall. As we pause under a dim blackout light, we find George Pappas vainly trying to explain Einstein’s Theory to Sammy (give up basketball and do more homework) Freedson. Philip Osep- chuk now draws our attention as he creates a minor blitzkrieg by chasing his military carrier pigeons around the shelter, unsuc- cessfully trying to dispatch a message to the F. B. I. Office in Washington where Freddie Emmett has taken the place of J. Edgar Hoover. G-man Emmett has shown great discrimination in his selection of his competent staff, Dan Mullane, Bob Gill and Victor Havian, which aids him in exterminating worms, Japs, and other insignificant insects. Eleanor Curran, that shorthand whiz, is Freddie’s efficient secretary, especially efficient when work demands their presence alone after office hours. Imagine the time and a half! In a musty office across the hall from our great crime preventer sits income tax collector, Marie Sweeny, trying her utmost to file returns and powder her pretty nose at the same time. N. B. You should see the files. And a peek through the stained glass windows (special peekers for stained glass windows) of the U. S. Patent Office reveals Dickie Marrs attempting to read a let- ter in invisible ink from Jimmy Harris, who has sent in the pink blueprints of his invulnerable battleship completely equipped with special holes through which enemy torpedoes may pass with ease. As Dick examines the files to be sure that this remarkable scheme has not been submitted before, he pauses as he sees Bobby Maher’s sensational two-tone paint in one can (blood-blue and orange- black). Other submissions include Louis Wilkinson’s, who, in cooperation with the Defense Program for the conservation of paper, has invented a leafless notebook; and Robert O’Connor’s paneless window panes to prevent the shattering of glass in the event of an air raid. Atop this building, teletyping to all parts of the nation a report of Florence Grayton’s appointment as lovelorn editor of the Congressional Record, is Anna May Line- han, being protected from wind and rain by Jimmy Eagan. Back in our shelter, this message is received with great as- tonishment as it was generally believed that Dick Greene, the na- tionally known orator, would be the recipient of this coveted award, for he believes that if he can’t chase ’em, he can always advise ’em. (The Congressmen, of course.) Busily engaged at the shelter switchboard is Doris LeBel, who informs us that despite the raid, the fights at Camp Chattahoochee we fought to an amaz- ing finish. In the last three seconds of the fifteenth round, the dark-horse. Bud Lehane, scored a knockout over the white hope, Joe Louis. A new champion is born! And from Washington we hear that Harry Limauro has been cited for a Congressional medal for his remarkable feat of downing 27 Jap planes. Under the corner table (they don’t want to be disturbed) sharpening their skates for their eighth tryout with the Bruins, are Wally Line- han and Johnnie Keon. Bernice Bouchard, ardent music-lover, has just turned the radio dial and what do we hear but the Phil- harmonic Orchestra, directed by Skinnay Ennis’ competitor, J. H. Lyons. General Robert E. Manning ( not to be confused with Robert E. Lee) has just entered to ask Is Everybody Happy?” His new uniform has just been designed by the newest success in that field, Grace Mallia. Fuller-brush man, James Manos, (who has finally realized his ambition to travel) is displaying his wares to the Allen twins v ho are busily knitting (sweaters) presumably for the Red Cross. As she dashes madly around the shelter in search of Marie Mark- ham to show her a telegram which states that they have been ac- cepted as first-class welders in the Lockheed Plant in California, Norma Lee accidentally bumps into and knocks out the home- made false teeth of dentist Harry Spackas. Esther Chigas, his as- sistant, quickly steps up to assist him. Our attention is then at- tracted by a squeal from Sadie Finocchiaro who is struck in the eye by a small squirt (not Muriel Olson) from the fountain pen which Leonard Marshall is absorbed in the tedious task of trying to repair. This pen is the much used property of book reviewer, Edward F. McCarthy. GLA IV, CRCUS SLEEP) ' SCARE 0 ? Peabody High School META Page One Hundred and Twenty-five As we leisurely pass the bulletin board, we discover that the verdict in the case of Dumas brothers vs. the state, has finally been announced and, as usual, lawyer Charles McNiff has added an- other victory to his now luminous career in his triumph over his worthy opponent. District Attorney Tulio J. Peruffo. Charlie suc- ceeded in getting the brothers a term of 99 years instead of the threatened life sentence. Charlie remarks, It was a tough case, Mom, but the presence of Aunt Lydia, Uncle Zepp and Cousin Winnie on the jury certainly helped the cause. From the bold black letters, we learn that Kim” Apostolides, after serving as an apprentice to the famous John Powers, has taken over the na- tionally known model agency. Among his glamorous models are Ethel O ' Leary, Joan Ingalls, Beatrice White and Lucy West. On his Board of Beauty Advisers are Christine Driscoll, Florence Kristo and Marion Graff. Robert Backman is at this moment tacking up the latest reports which inform us that the movie rights to Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star, I Went Parking in a Car,” that sensational new novel by Marge Bates, have been purchased by Eddie Koz- wich, new head of M. G. M. Studios. In the cast will be such box office stars as suave Maxie Kravchuk, tragedic Lorraine Kaspar, handsome Harold Sheppard and glamorous Eileen Buckley. Mr. Kozwich has also been fortunate in securing the services of that famous orchestra leader Nicholas Cheklas to direct the musical se- quences of this super-colossal, stupendous production; however, due to circumstances beyond their control, the band will not be ac- companied by their star trumpeter. Bob Chandler, who is at the moment auditioning for a spot in Uncle Sam’s Bugle Corps. David Drew, representative of the military intelligence, can be seen in conference with Gregory Kronteres, considering the effect of the new rocket ship which is propelled by fire-crackers instead of rockets. Selected to send off this great scientific achieve- ment are the world famous rockettes including gracious Phyllis Small, vivacious Edith DiCroce, petite Meredith Peckham, allur- ing Jeannette Kasprzyk, exotic Madeline Meade and fascinating Rita Moquin. Here we would like to mention that Loretta LaPointe, famous woman flyer, is donating her last few hours’ leave to help us compile the necessary information for our literary accomplishment mentioned earlier in this writing. Immediately upon its comple- tion, she will ferry a bomber to England under the auspices of the Women Flyers of America. As her co-pilot on this hazardous trip will be Mary Jones. Her crew will include Mollie Yelinski, Sophie Asloglou, and Jean Bruni. As we head for the shelter’s canteen to get some much needed nourishment, we hear a low mischievous mumble. As we discover its source, we find Leona LeBlanc with a package of five-inch salutes in one hand and some safety matches in the other, devilish- ly repeating to herself, If I dood it, I get a wicking — I dood it.” As the smoke clears away, we hear Leona murmuring, My momma done tol’ me. After scraping ourselves up off the floor we start again for the canteen. This time our perseverence is re- warded. As we enter the canteen, we are greeted with the fra- grant aroma of onion and garlic on rye. Through the swinging doors which lead into the kitchen, we spy the head chef, Phil Court, who is absentmindedly receiving instructions for the prep- aration of the food from dietitian Helen Connors. At one of the tables, Doris Souza and Helen Michalek are undertaking the rou- tine task of answering the letters of their engagees (fiancees). All eight of them! The score at present is 5 to 3 with Doris in the lead. We now proceed to eat a Dagwood special com- posed of white bread, minced ham, lettuce, onions, tomatoes, mus- tard, limburgher cheese, chicken (of the sea), pigs feet, ketchup, pica-picil-picee RELISH, frogs’ legs and other superb delicacies. To wash this down, we use our last check for a short (root) beer. These fine sandwiches are served to us by Gertrude Leon- ard, Mary Maihos, Helen Hockenhull, Julia Coombs and Alice Daniels (one waitress for each sandwich). We almost swallow °3 Ou R Bo i 1 ' guTCHtR Bo HIT THAI f U N ! ? Peabody High School META Page One Hundred and Twenty-seven our gigantic sandwiches whole when we are greeted by rear- admirals George Manninen and Scrappy” Houghton who have worked hard in order to get leave from their mosquito fleet” to attend the reunion of their class and its banquet; however, we make it up to them by ordering Dagwood specials for them, too. Having replenished our stomachs, we now seriously begin gathering our notes for The Volume. On questioning Irma Gourley, we learn that she has been promoted to the head of the Industrial Relations Department at the Hygrade. Betty Endslow tells us that she is working 25 hours a day, eight days a week at her switchboard. On inquiry of Katina Paganis we discover that she has succeeded Lt. Gene Tunney in his capacity as physical in- structor of the U. S. Navy. Boy! what a life for Katina! We also jot down notes on Selwyn Reed who has perfected a gun that will shoot two Japs with one bullet. We are then inter- rupted by a moan from Lewis Bettencourt ' s trombone which an- nounces a contest to determine the boom girl.” The following, because of their ability as connoisseurs of feminine pulchritude (beauty) have been chosen as judges. Franklin Anderson, Flor- ence Katsulas, Sophie Kastanopolous, Martin Wynn and Andy” Lalikos. In cooperation with William Paul, successor to Frank A. Goodwin, they have agreed to slow down at the curves. The finalists, from east to west, are as follows: Helen Shaw, Elda Parker, Bernice Ripley, Virginia Laakso, Virginia Warren and Jean Morley. While the fever of excitement causes beads of cold sweat to drip from the contestants’ brows and the audience is tense with suspense, Albert DiCroce, the Master of Ceremonies, calmly proceeds to peel an orange and devour it. Finally, with a spray of orange juice, he blurts out that the lucky winner is Virginia Laakso because she coincides more closely to the circumferential highway than any of the others. The rhythm of the balls dropping in the pockets of the billiard table draws us to the shelter’s recreation center where the in- triguing pool match of Billy Augusto and Lenny Smith versus Chris Karamas and Pericles Skaliotis is in progress. Since the players are slightly anxious, and a bit hotheaded over their game of skill, they are under the supervision of Lewis Girolimon, aided and abetted by an extra thick pool stick. From under the billiard table we are greeted by the familiar rattling of the galloping ivories and as we stoop, we reach the level of Prokopes Kaldes, Tony Koutzoukis, and George Liacos, with the latter trying to roll a pair of fours with a pair of loaded dice under the ever-watchful eyes of his two opponents. However, the clatter of the rolling dice is drowned out by the consistent sound of the ping pong ball, bouncing from one side to the other side of the table under the guidance of Adele Ambrazavitch and Viola Consoli, opposed by Edwina Espinola and Julia Fernandes. Indulging in a game of gin-rummy are Theodore Mallas, George Mana, Eva Angelides, Mary Cena, Henry Stepchin and Phyllis Espindle. Sereno Tag- lieri is attempting to retain his magnificent physique by juggling two dumb-bells, but finds them a bit too heavy so he takes on Sam Potash in a wrestling match instead. The next fifteen minutes are spent waiting for a cautious Mary Bravos to make her next move in her professional checker game with William Mello. Although we decide to move on, their more patient followers, Irving Zall, Helen Kotsiroplos and Allan Zion await the final outcome. As we leave this happy group, we pass by John Walsh and Vivian Kochilaris who are standing in the doorway, sketching the happy countenances of their classmates as they frolic under the stress and strain of fire. Once more in the midst of the general assembly, we eaves- drop on Peggy Mahoney, Eleanor Kiley, Mary Warren, Hazel Southwick and Florence Stanford, in hope of accumulating more information for our volume Who’s Who in the Class of ’42,” from this gossiping group. The current topic of conversation is Nikki Sclavounos’ much criti cized appearance in Miss Riley’s gym uniform. Mary Kileen rushes by us in search of a Red Cross nurse and she returns with Alice Marques and Roslyn Maron. We inquire and learn that Anne Mekolsky has been knocked unconscious by an Indian Club which she was passing around with Blanche Graglia, Alice Sawchuk, Helen Sargent and Mary Sakaris, under the direction of the as- sistant gym supervisor, Clara Petropoulos. With a suitcase of mud and clay before her, we become aware of Barbara Durkee, working unwearyingly in hope of discovering a mixture that will obliterate Helen Yaskell ' s freckles. As we con- tinue with our collection of notes, we learn that Jean Goodwin has, through a misunderstanding, been joined in holy wedlock with Harold Sheppard. She stuttered and said yes” twice when he tried to sell her a Liberty magazine. We also learn that Virginia Shahnaian and Mary Pramas, in accord with the return of the horse and buggy age, have opened their own blacksmith shop. Tacked up on the wall is a Pep-Em-Up advertisement. The poster shows the deplorable condition of mankind before the de- velopment of this tonic and the fine physique after imbibing in the product for the short period of one month. Before” is rep- resented by a scrawny individual we couldn’t possibly identify and the after” by Stella Stathos. By this time the tension of the raid has worn off, and the general assembly begins to frolic. In the dancing that follows, one couple is outstanding, namely, Louis Zavarise and Olga Angelides. One group has already ventured to the surface to see what damage the raid has caused. The girls who are Mary Mallia, Anna Kravchuk, Irene Karabelos and Stacia George are quickly sent back to safety by the protecting warden, Manuel Medeiros, with the information that the public will not be admitted to the streets for at least ten minutes. They return in time to witness Betty Craig and Mike Kereluk, impressing their ever-gathering audience with their exhibition of modern jitter- bugging. We are beckoned from this hilarious scene by photographer Cleo Skarmos who invites us to join a group including Lucy Baptista, Mae Coviello and Eleanor Drivas in a photograph which will be printed in the Peabody Enterprise II under the caption, Some do it, some don’t; but we’re not the ones that won’t.” After the photograph has been taken, Cleo displays his album and we run across pictures of many individuals with whom we are ac- quainted. Under the heading of Glamour-pusses,” we find Ade- line Bettencourt, Ruth Nelson and Margaret Ortins. On the next page is a group under the title, The Outdoor Type,” consisting of Portia Collins, Catherine Bravos, Stacia Kolodziej and Stavrula Spyropoulos. Our attention is attracted by Steve Themes who is in the process of showing Josephine Brolewicz and Ruth Mizner how to pull off a fake fake ; however, he is interrupted by Mildred Gaieski and Stavricha Gargas, who are unable to control their de- sire for football players and rush madly at the helpless Themes. All of a sudden Pericles Xindaris rings the all clear” signal and Adele Grigonis kicks her heels in ecstatic joy. Also at the time, Kathryne Parianos and Beatrice Nikolopoulos go into an Irish jig. Helen Marchewka makes a dash for the news office in search of information that will inform her of the whereabouts of her Beau Brummel of the Marine Corps, George Watkins. She is given interference by George Perkins, who blots out many a hapless victim including Udilla Michelazzo and Madeline Ker- korian. As we reach the surface, we are informed that a few of our classmates will be unable to return to their interrupted ban- quet because they have urgent business which necessitates their immediate attention. Perhaps the attraction is the vast amount of mazuma” that he is re- ported to have earned stitching girdles in Frieda Skrep’s Clothing Shop. Emerging from the shelter down the street, a few of the lost sheep of our class are seen, who, in the excitement entered the wrong shelter. The prodigal daughters are Mary Petcavitch, Jen- nie Spiliotis, Priscilla Smyrnios and Aspasia Pappas; however, they are not sorry that they missed our shelter for they were gallantly entertained and instructed in the fine art of crocheting by the handsome master himself, big Bill Twiss. And so ... as the class of ’42 resumes its interrupted ban- quet, we humbly conclude this attempt to enliven the memories of your high school career. L. E.; P. B.; L. L.; L. W.; N. We hope the recipients of these talents and tokens may be as fortunate with them as the philanthropist bequeathing. We, therefore, hereby , designate that: Don Wallace bequeaths his mastery of the Latin language to Frankie Roach. Florence Bulygo leaves her art of hog calling to Freida Roucci. John Bellew, the class song bird, transmits his fine soprano to Pete Vrettos. Wally Zielski intrusts his capable leadership to John Drago. To Anne Gilmore, Mimi Lawrence commits her sedate per- sonality. Hope Hardy leaves her stylish manner to Jane Merrow. Robert Manning bequeaths his invigorating wit to Arthur Davidson. Maxie and Gabby transmit their football skill to Bill Seeg- litz. He in turn will pass it on to the boys of ’43. Lorraine Kaspar commits her dainty fashion to Albert Thibo- deau. James Henry Lyons leaves his curvesome stature to Barbara Stevens. Betty Brown passes on her much used comb to Dotty Doyle. Mike Kereluk bequeaths his mammoth physique to Platon Vontzalides. Edith DiCroce surrenders her control of the baton to Connie Bezemes. Jackie Woodbury leaves his ways of romance to Lenny Jones. Phyllis Hollingsworth is the recipient of Nikki Sclavounos’ athletic ability. Dickie Marrs bequeaths his well groomed, curly tresses to Walter Romanovitz. Bud Essember commits his innocent baby eyes to Arnold Murray. Lucy West intrusts her artful talents to petite Alice Hardy. Sammy Freedson leaves la force de la francais to Harry Ankeles. Richard Greene intrusts his lightning like manner to anyone who can keep up with him. Eddie Wilchinski yields his unique versatility to Wild Bill” Cody. Charles McNiff bequeaths his rosy red cheeks to Norrine Whiting. Eileen Buckley leaves her Jergen’s lotion hands to Arthur Lynch. The class of ’42 wills all its abundant finances and holdovers to the class of ’43, may they use them well. Thus may the future possessors of our seats of the mighty relish the above as we on this fifth day of June, year of Our Lord 1942, at the Peabody High School, located in Peabody, situated in Essex County, in the state of Massachusetts, a composite of the United States of America, do hereby attest.
