But my teacher told me to wait in my seat. So I started to tap my feet And all my classmates joined the beat. All I was thinking about was bread and meat. So I wrote this poem. WHERE WERE YOU WHEN THE LIGHTS WENT OUT? On February 3, 1977, at 10:55 a.m. , every light in every room of Peabody Jr. High blacked out. The result was confusion, speculation, and excitement. When the lights went out, I thought what if the electricity went out all over the U . S . ? How would people live without it? Our national defense would be limited. Our food could spoil. A lot of us might starve to death. A lot of people will be unemployed. I was walking down a long dark hall , trying to find my way to the bathroom. I didn ' t make it .
