Each of us must do our part to help our country become less dependent on outside energy sources. In the past months, newspapers across the country have been filled with news of the energy crisis There are four basic reasons for you to conserve energy • High costs of producing and de- livering energy have forced rates higher and higher • Fuels needed to produce energy are in short supply • There is no known way to produce electricity without some adverse effect on the environment. By con- serving electricity, you help protect the environment, • By conserving energy, you help en- sure an adequate supply for many important life-support functions Following are some of the ways in which you can help YOUR HOME In the home, very little energy is needed to produce light, more is needed to power appliances and the most energy is demanded for heating and cooling. There are a few major electrical ap- pliances which are significantly respon- sible for the surge in energy consump- tion. By proper use of these appliances you can save money and energy Refrigerator 1 . Don ' t overload with a lot of warm food at onetime 2. Keep the condenser coils at the back or bottom of your refrigerator clean — dusty coils reduce efficiency 3. Defrost whenever frost builds up to 1 4 inch. 4. When going away for an extended period, turn off the refrigerator 5. When going away for a short period, leave as few perishables as possible and turn refrigerator to a warmer setting 6. Check the door to see that it shuts tightly 7 Don ' t use your refrigerator to cool your home Range 1. Cook all foods for each meal in one area — on top of the stove, in the oven or under the broiler 2 Use only as much heat as you need to do the cooking job 3. Don ' t preheat longer than 10 minutes 4 Don ' t peek in the oven unnecessarily — this causes the oven temperature to drop 25° F 5. Don ' t use your range to help heat your kitchen Water Heater 1 Avoid high setting, 140°F-160°F is usually adequate 2. Have your plumber or service man come in regularly to check your unit 3 When washing at a sink or basin, don ' t keep hot water running 4 Remember that a shower uses only about half as much water as a tub Air Conditioner 1 When no one is home, turn off the air conditioner 2 Select moderate or medium setting, rather than high 3. During the day adjust draperies to keep out the sun 4. Don ' t block the flow of cool air with draperies or furniture 5 Check the filter frequently for dirt Clean or replace according to manu- facturers ' instructions 6. Buy the right size air conditioner for the area to be cooled Dishwasher 1. Use the dishwasher only when full 2 Use the kind of detergent recom- mended by the manufacturer 3 Clean the filter screen often Washer and Dryer 1 Do one full load instead of several small ones 2 Use cold water and rinse with cold water detergent 1 3 Use 10 minute wash cycles 4 Don ' t overdry clothes 5 Remove lint from trap every time you j use the dryer. i 6. During the summer, vent the dryer to | the outside In the winter, disconnect the vent Space Heater or Furnace 1. Keep radiators and warm air outlets clean Don ' t block them with furniture 2 Take advantage of the sun Keep blinds open on sunny days, closed on cold or cloudy days 3 Check windows and doors If they are drafty, have weather stripping in- stalled Also save heat by using storm windows and doors 4 If you have a fireplace, make sure damper is closed when not in use 5 Don ' t open outside doors unneces- sarily 6 Close off and don ' t heqt unused areas 7 Make certain that thermostat and heating system are in good working order An annual checkup by your plumber or fuel oil dealer is recom- mended 8 Keep the furnace filter clean Check it once a month 9 Keep the thermostat setting constant 70°F should be fine for daytime. 65°F for nighttime 10 If you open your bedroom window at night, close the door to avoid heat loss Close heat vents if possible 11 Makesureyourhomeis well insulated f ir t Milazzo. It must reinforce its com- mitment to the education of its whole population. Our nation must do this in an atmosphere of fairness and justice so that the dreams and the hopes of every man shall be tested by but one criterion - to what extent each person is personally willing to achieve the degree of excellence that is inherent in himself. For if each should do that, he shall be rewarded by his fellows by their recognition of his personal dignity and by his own knowledge of his par- ticipation in the enlargement and enhancement of the lives of others. Students must be posi- tively supported in their desires to achieve the good life and to share the opportunities that should be open to them in the best interest of our society and the future of our nation. G. S. Fauntleroy It is my very special pleasure to express my proud feeling of all our students who are in attendance here at Peabody Junior High School. R. Stephenson Teachers are here to help you And point you in the right way. They tell about things important in life And hope you are here to stay. They tell about math and science, That most of our students don ' t like. But if you want to survive in life , We better learn it right. They tell us about all the rules That we should follow while we ' re in school. They tell us how to control ourselves And how to follow the Golden Rule. They help us to have better manners Each and every day. But if you don ' t go by them, JONES, ALBERT W. Assistant Principal STEPHENSON, RUDOLPH. JR. Assistant Principal BUFFO. SHIRLEY D. Attendance Clerk HARRIS, ROSE S. Secretary LEMONS, DIANNE E. Guidance Secretary MORGAN, FRANCES B. Secretary PETERSON, BLAINE Y. Attendance Secretary WILSON, MARY G. Secretary Mr. A. W. Jones is a true Peabodian. He graduated from Peabody. When he finished college, he came back and has been here ever since. All of his children, who are now going to college, graduated from Peabody. He was a PE teacher for 18 years, a football coach, and an assistant principal. In 1972 he became principal of Peabody Jr. High School. Mr. Jones says the students today are more intelligent than in previous years. The problem is trying to channel their intelligence in the right direction. He has always considered Peabody as one of the best Jr. High Schools in the State of Virginia. I would like to see the day when all of our students would take part in all of the activities of the school and really become true Peabodians. DAVIS, PERCY Vocational Guidance GOODE, CHARLES R. Aide 35 To many of us it seems the days are passing faster than ever before. We are now at the end of another school year. School, to some, is boredom and drudgery , to others , it is a challenge and an opportunity for learning. But each of us should have a positive goal to achieve , a desire for fulfillment and happiness and a specific , positive purpose each day. With the right spirit, even the unpleasant task has within it some hidden riches which contribute to our fulfillment. I hope you will find this true in your own personal life, too. G. E. Peal I don ' t think I heve ever had a work environment as pleasant as Peabody. I feel good about coming to school , I miss being here during vacations, and I look forward to Mondays, which to all working people, means a great deal. I enjoy my counselees and think this age group is an interesting and fascinating adventure . I guess what I’m really saying is I’m Happy! G. Sears FACULTY 36 FIRST IMPRES- SIONS Being from the country I always viewed Peabody as a Big City” school with all the usual problems of big city schools. ” I have always admired Peabody and I still sometimes marvel at the idea of working here . J. Williams Roaches under the sink. P. Witt Because it was an older school, I thought it left a lot to be desired. However, after 9 months of teaching, I am very impressed with the rapport between students and teachers and faculty and administrators. It seems as though all are concerned with the betterment of school activities and increasing activities that are in the students interests. K . Painter For Teacher Appreciation Day some students did nice things for their homeroom teacher. The SCA gave a party for all faculty members during their planning periods. The teachers enjoyed the mints, peanuts, cakes, punch, cookies and calming background music. Johnna Robinson We gave a surprise party and she was very surprised. She walked around the room and gave everyone a kiss on the cheek. That l surprised us. ALCARAZ, CHRISTINE Mathematics BARBOUR, CAROL Y. Home Economics BARKSDALE, CHARLES R. History FIRST IMPRESSI- ONS When I was an eighth grader, that was quite a few years ago, my first impression was much the same as any other new student . As a teacher, I was impressed by so many people , whom I had known for a long time . P. Davis I loved it. The principal, Mr. Rainey, was progressive and the students were a challenge for me . I also found the teachers to be very friendly. C. Alcaraz I saw a close intimate family where everybody knew each other. About a dozen teachers and 250 students. M. Hayes After a short time at Peabody, I saw that the students were warm and the faculty were willing to help when they could. T. Burkhalter A lot of buildings and entrances and exits. J. Burch FACULTY STUDENT ATTITUDES Most of the students enter with acceptable attitudes. If there are any changes we, the teachers, are partly responsible. To be more direct, however, the general trend of students ' attitudes is good , but there is always room for improvement. J. Williams The students ' attitudes toward school, teachers, administrators, learning and extra curricular activities are excellent. Many evidences of positive and constructive attitudes far outweigh the punitively negative. P. Davis We have only a few stu dents who are not interested in obtaining an education. The overall attitudes of the students are good . R. Stephenson Most of the students at Peabody are happy, loving, respecting, striving young people . A few (too many however) are unhappy and confused youths who find it difficult to love and respect themselves and others. M. S. Hayes The students as a body are very undisciplined and apathetic. Although in class they are generally average in attitudes and behavior when they are grouped in large numbers they must be strictly disciplined. The only attitude students have now, that did not exist in the many schools I attended is the desire to hurt one another. It certainly took a great deal more to provoke a fight when I was coming through school. I think fighting has become a form of recreation at Peabody. M. Witt Most of the students with whom I have direct contact are OK. Many are lacking in manners and the social graces in general though I don ' t believe it ' s hopeless. There is a tremendous amount of profanity. G . Longsworth Very difficult to answer. On one hand 1 feel that to be given privileges and grades without the necessary hard work and responsibility on their part. For example: Students WANT a juke box. But when we had one they never followed the rules set up and as a result the lines could not move in the cafeteria and students were constantly late for class. I do believe that students should have privileges like the jukebox, but only if they prove they can handle it. Just giving out privileges without attaching responsibilities spoils the student and does not prepare him for the outside world . (Example: driving license is a privilege but if you don ' t follow traffic rules you can lose it.) C. Alcaraz FACULTY Teachers 40 HOW DO YOU LIKE PEABODY? I love it. I find it very challenging. There ' s never a dull moment, always new ideas coming up to be worked on. Sometimes it is frustrating because there is not enough time to be able to accomplish an idea with the degree of perfection as I would like . There are still many new ideas I ' d like to see carried out. Maybe we can get around to them in the next eight years. C. Alcaraz Like any public institution , Peabody has its faults. Working together, students and teachers can resolve these and still have a good school . R. Hairston All the energy displayed by the students, the wonderful faculty and staff and the progressiveness of the system itself. The people, especially the students, here are beautiful! G. Longsworth I graduated from Peabody when what is called the Williams Annex was Peabody High School so with some pride , I must say Peabody is an endearing institution to me. P. Davis I like Peabody. I like young people and I like being around them. F. Morgan Each and every year that I have been here, 1 find that I like Peabody better than the year before . W. Deatherage Excluding the auditorium , I have no real complaints about the actual physical plant. The faculty is generally personable and friendly. In fact, if we had not been working in the same school, we may never have met. Mr. and Mrs. Gordon I feel there are advantages and dis- advantages to this. The advantages may be centered around economy that thousands of people across the nation are concerned about; and secondly there is actually more time to spend with one another because you can come and go together. On the other hand, sometimes working in the same sit- uation kind of limits conversation because the couple has nothing new to di scuss. Then, too, let’s face it, being human we all tend to have little misunderstandings from time to time and many times just being away from the source of con- fusion tends to ease the tension. G. I once had a heart so golden blue, But now it ' s gone from me to you. You ' re my love, my only one. If 1 die and go to heaven, I ' ll meet you at the golden stairs. If you ' re not there by judgment day, I’ll know you went the other way. And I ' ll give the angels back their wings, Their golden harps and everything. And just to prove my love to you, I ' ll come to hell to be with you. Chester Ellis Houpe, Katie Howard , Michelle Huddleston , Karyn Jac kson, James Jackson, Michael S. The times we ' ve had these few years Have brought to our faces laughter and tears The years ahead are going to be hard A lot tougher than just a report card . But as long as we keep the memory of you The happy memories will carry us through. The way we ' d laugh and run through the halls And the way we ' d write our names on the walls The things we did weren ' t always right, Like cursing at teachers or starting a fight. But Peabody we really do love you so, And I ' m sorry to say we have to go. Peabody ' s a name we’ll always cherish In hopes that others won ' t let it perish. And as the theme of your yearbook says this year , Peabody ' s brought us a lot of cheer. Through the bumps and stumbles along the way Peabody ... we had some Happy Days. Many varied thoughts crossed the minds of parents, teachers and students alike. The requirement for mixed PE classes came from new Federal laws, but the local schools had to solve the multitude of problems: schedules, physical facilities, course outlines, and new uni- 7 0 forms. This successful change offered students more variety in classes. A CHANCE FOR GROWTH Do you remember when we were out of school some days? Those were profes- sional days. I had fun at home, but half of the time, I was bored. ! told i my mother I ' ll be glad to go back to school. She asked why. I told her I because I was bored and I was used to being in a noisy place. She started laughing . Cynthia Parham Having a professional day is a good idea; the kids have a chance to stay home and do whatever they want to do. Teachers can plan their next day ' s work and get new ideas from other teachers on how to improve or add to their teaching skills. Pete Gwaltney 97 T PROFESSIONAL DAYS AND NIGHTS helped teachers evaluate themselves, exchange points of view, and acquire new skills. Teachers were introduced to the metric system of measurement through small workshops using metric charts , scales, and well-informed instructors . Guest speakers were invited and small problem- solving discussion groups yielded valuable solutions. On other days, the faculty worked hard at solving the routine requirements of their profession. ONE MINUTE OF SILENCE During at least one minute of the day, students and teachers were able to pray or meditate in the public schools. By enactment of the General Assembly of Virginia and adoption by the Petersburg School Board , the right of every individual to the free exercise of religion was guaranteed in school, not as a religious service, but as an opportunity for silent prayer or meditation or a moment of silent reflection on the anticipated activities of the day. The quiet was refreshing. ACTIVITIES PEP RALLY Most students enjoyed the Pep rally and the spirit of the team and the band. Unfortunately, scheduling problems cancelled other planned pep rallies so it proved to be the one and only one for 1977. Students hope the next year will yield more pep rallies. WHAT MAKES US HAPPY? The winter of 1976 was the coldest ever in the memories of eyen t oldtimers . School was closed several days , partly because of snow , pan because of extreme cold causing fuel shortages . This was the winter Govern Godwin declared a state of emergency , forcing businesses to operate maximum of forty hours a week and to lay off many workers. This was t winter that made the spring so welcom More teachers should get involved as sponsors in the activities so that more needs of the students can be met. For example, we should be able to offer intramural sports to all Peabodians and self-defense classes for the girls. We should become more civic minded and involved in our organizations . I don ' t care about the club meeting. The people that don’t go just sit in home room for half an hour doing nothing. The teachers want you to do some work but who wants to do work! Richard Coty All of the activities are wholesome, but some consume too much of the classroom time. They tend to interfere with the normal work in the class. I. Jeter GETTING INVOLVED Pretty soon, it should be mandatory for every student to attend . F. Morgon In my opinion club meetings are all right. It gets students involved in the school projects. It keeps some students out of trouble. Club meetings can help schools become more fun and less boring. Kelly Crigger Petersburg Activity Period is the best time of the day at Peabody Jr. High School. Kids run up and down the halls to go to their history, science, Literary, and other various clubs. Some kids say they don’t have time for clubs because they have work to catch up on . Howard McCain When first coming to Peabody I had no idea what clubs I wanted to join. To my surprise one of my teachers from last year had recommended me for the SCRIPT. So I decided I would at least try it. At the first meeting of the SCRIPT, I found a lot of my friends were also in there, and also that the sponsor (Mrs. Fisher) wouldn’t allow any one to join unless they were recommended by another teacher. There were a lot of people showing up wanting to be a member of the SCRIPT, but Mrs. Fisher wouldn ' t let them. Then she told us it was a great honor to be a member of the PEABODY SCRIPT, so I decided to stay and I ' m glad . Yvette Bethea What do you do in Activity Period? Some people go to club meetings and some people just stay in their classes bored to death. Other students tell lies so that they can get out of the class. Well, I can ' t say much because I do it myself. Not all the time. Next time you have Activity Period do like I do and go to the Library. Stacey Revish CONCERT MARCHING BANDS Time, patience and effort all play a major part in making our band the suc- cess that it is. Whether playing at a football game, at a concert or in a parade, the band, under the direction of Mr. H. Brower, adds life and color to the occasion. The band started during summer school. Members have rehearsed after school from 3:30 until 5:00 pm and some 7:00 am practices were held also. The band consists of about 95 members including the flag ] 1 7 girls, rifle girls and the majorettes. It has performed in half-time shows at Peabody’s games and also at Virginia State College and at Peabody ' s field for a Titians game. In order to achieve its greatest heights, the members of the band must have that most important quality: Teamwork. The band has been an active and cultural addition to our school. Among the band ' s accomplish- ments are performances in city parades. It is noted for its great spirit, origi- nality , and skill . The band is truly the pride of the school . ymm if v • jrfr j 4r ‘ r . ORGANIZATIONS SCIENCE DEPT. — SANTA ’S HELPERS 126 I think that this science project shows that Peabody students can do many things together to help people in our city who need and enjoy our thoughtful generosity. It all worked out so well. We should be proud. Tanya Wrenn 1 think the science department did a good thing by doing this project. They helped the children whose parents couldn ' t afford toys for Christmas to still have a nice Christmas. Robyn Allen I think that the science project really showed how much school spirit Peabody has and how working together can help others that are less fortunate. Susie Powell 1 know that the science department did a good thing by doing this project because it really made many kids feel wanted by someone and it also made us feel useful. Vera Sykora The science department caught the spirit of Christmas this year as they collected literally hundreds of used usuable toys M | l and clothing for any family in need of them . Most all students in any of the science classes participated by collecting or | restoring these worthwhile items. There were so many things that several classrooms had to be used to store them all. Gregory Byrd Carol Craft When you debate you can understand things more clearly than before. Cheryl Robertson DEBATE CLUB The Debate Club is a literary organization which helps members to learn the art of debating issues both postively and negatively. This year they have had several debates on issues such as abortion, black- white relationships, and boys and girls having PE together. 1 33 TOP TO BOTTOM, LEFT TO RIGHT - Carol Craft, Karen Baskerville, Donna Riggins, Stephanie Pride, Tyris Goode, Susie Johnson, Denise Autrey, Tammy George, Juanita Murphy, Daphne Wiggins, Crystal Myr- ick, Robin West. NOT PICTURED - Kim Graves, Susie Hines, Teresa George . ORGANIZATIONS The production of a yearbook on the junior high level is a great challenge for any staff. The amount of time, coordination and individual effort is enormous. Is it worth the time and money? At the first of the year, the staff must get together and decide upon a theme and make specific plans for the various pages of the book. 134 Pictured below are Ettora Epps, Carolyn Burrow, Sharon Walker, Brandon Robinson, Debbie Lewis, Lelie McNew and Ray Gryder who ponder these problems. Others work out details of art and design, Warren Hicks, Ettora Epps, Jackie Clanton, Cheryl Spain, Crystal Jefferson, Patricia Scott and Mari- lyn Wade. Edgar Best and Ettora Epps look t hrough the needed materials in the kit provided for compiling a yearbook. Many pages of layouts or rough drafts are made in the search for the perfect style and design. Cheryl Robertson, Kay Abernathy and Cassandra Coates, Tammy Ozmar and Kathy Cum- mings work on these designs. Thomas Mingia and Danny Saul- nier and others sort the 1400 indi- vidual pictures of the students, arranging them in alphabetical order and matching names to faces. Karen Massey, the editor. keeps all phases of the work mov-| ing along as it should. Sales pro- motion is necessary. A special I assembly is planned and produced I by the staff; Ettora Epps, Sylvia I Clark, Cindy Keller, Elizabeth I Edwards and Debora Rice recreate I Happy Days. After all the balloons and candy have been thrown to the audience, Thomas Mingia and | Terry Ellis help clean up. f Ji A professional photographer is hired to take the big pictures of the clubs. Mrs. Fauntleroy organized his day and staff members helped him through the school. Barry DeWitt, Greer Thurman, Deborah Rice, Gail McCray, Chris Squires, Cheryl Spain, Letetia Henderson, Marilyn Wyche, Betty Spears, Sharon Walker, Cindy Keller, Cathy Stafford and Sheila Harvey. Money. Got to have money. Patrons were asked to contribute a dollar to the production of the book. Robert Martin asked his teacher, Mr. Longsworth. Once the club pictures come in, people must be identified and articles written. Unfortunately, sometimes important pictures are lost. Bar- bara Heberlig, Valerie Cheatham, Jackie Clanton, Crystal Jefferson, Marilyn Wade, Carolyn Burrow, Brandon Robinson, Cathy Stafford, Patricia Scott, Kelly Crigger, Patty Jackson, Maurice Wilson, Pam Lundy, Eva Parham, Wanda West, Barrie Branch, and Janet Ozmar work and work and wor k. YEARBOOK CLUB 135 ORGANIZATIONS The work just never seems to end. Elizabeth Edwards and Sheila Harvey. Gail McCray, Antonio Kemp and Raymonde Moore hurriedly prepare stories and pictures. Mr. Goodmansen seems to be forever writing hall passes or explaining to teachers why their students missed class. Once in a while, some students take a break. But the deadline pushes closer and Jennifer Sims, Cindy Keller and Sherrie Purdie press on to meet the deadline. Panic strikes and only the most loyal staff members are willing to accept the grueling pressure . Letetia Henderson, Vera Turner, Teddy Yeatts and Charles Spears and several others help in the final moments. Finally the last box is closed and mailed to the publisher. Oh, what a relief it is! As you watch students enjoying the collection of school memories, once again you ask, is it worth the time? Is it worth the money? Was the adventure worthwhile? YEARBOOK CLUB I think of a yearbook as one of the most convenient, practical ways to preserve memories, and a wonderful instrument to aid us in reflecting. How often have I wanted to look back into the yesteryear faces of my Peabody classmates. Unfortunately, during the days of World War II, paper was too costly and publication of a yearbook was against the law. M. S. Every member of the Chapter has the opportunity to work behind the counter, selling, stocking, buying, and completing a physical inventory of merchandise as well as operating. A week before Christmas the Chapter members held a cookie sale and before that sold donuts to raise money for a field trip in the spring. They attended a fall Rally in Ludenburg where they participated in the Gong Show. A few people from Peabody did a 50 ' s number. The Chapter officers also went to an Officers Training Conference at Richard Bland College where they talked about their duties as officers. All the DECA Chapter officers in the district attended the meeting.
