T R Y I N G T 0 M A K E 1 T 2 the Past Peabody opened doors September 3 to Enrollment of 1442 students ! If you liked being around people , then Peabody Junior High was the place to be on the first day of school 1974. 1442 students pushed, nudged, squeezed, oozed, bumped, shoved and zapped their way into school on September 3. The enrollment steadily increased until by mid-year there were 1470 students. A faculty staff of 117 was on hand to welcome the crowd. The school had been painted and repairs I made. Fifteen new teachers, two new teacher aides, two new assistant principals and a full time school ' nurse had been added to the staff. I As the calendar moved from September to March , everyone adjusted to the football games , basketball games, baseball games, pep rallies. Script days, the noise factor, the heat, the cold, buses, no buses, and the routine . School biz was right on schedule . STOP . . . The time has come for a final accounting: to record the pep rallies, the dances and the assemblies that mark the momentum of our year, to wash the dabs of poster paint from our shoes and to contemplate the chemistry of water, and paint, and posters, and people, and our year at Peabody . 3 Administrative Staff Enlarged The Peabody Administrative staff consisted of our princi- pal, Mr. Albert Jones and three assistants, Mrs. G. Faunt- leroy, Mr. J. Porach and Mr. N. Ramsey. Mr. Jones had the huge responsiblity of overseeing the entire educational pro- gram of the school, seeing parents and arranging schedules. Mrs. Fauntleroy worked with student activities, substitute teachers and curriculum; Mr. Porach assisted students with lockers, worked with the textbook rental program and assisted with discipline while Mr. Ramsey worked with assembly programs, the cafeteria staff, and assisted with dis- cipline. The job of directing meaningful activities for our scnool was tremendous. As principal, Mr. Jones, and the rest of the administrative staff, maintained a close relationship with the students, they became involved with individual stu- dents by listening to their personal problems as well as ren- dering advice on many matters. Although their jobs kept them busy, the administrative staff participated in clubs, activities, and classes. They worked with the Student Coun- cil and parents. In cooperation with the faculty, they worked to develop strong relationships with everyone at Peabody. Mrs. G. Fauntlerov, Asst. Prin. Mr. James Porach, Asst. Prin. 4 Secretaries Brought Ray of Light to Office Mrs. B. Peterson, Attendance Miss Diane Lemons, Guid- ance Mrs. MaryG. Wilson, Finance The secretarial staff performed many functions this year. The executive and financial secretary, Mrs. Wilson took care of financial transactions; Mrs. Morgan and Mrs. Harris were the main office secretaries; Mrs. Peterson was the attendance sec- retary; Miss Lemons, the guidance secretary; Mrs. Dudley worked with the library staff; Mrs. Hite worked in the office of Williams Annex while Miss Guthery and Miss Orr were student secretaries working with Mr. Ramsey and Mrs. Fauntleroy. Mrs. Frances Morgan, Office Mrs. Wanda Hite, Vocational Mrs. Rose S. Harris, Office Mrs . Ruby D . Dudley , Library Miss Juanice Orr , Cooke Annex Miss Brenda Kay Guthrey, Office 5 Guidance Counselors Helped Us Make Decisions The counselors of Peabody Jr. High helped the students change classes, courses and make deci- sions which would further the education of our stu- dents. Students have many interests, abilities, and desires. These factors must be considered when scheduling is done . Of equal importance are the views of the parents of the students. Suffice it to say that the course and class planning for every student is a cooperative venture involving the stu- dent, his parents, and his counselor. Without these students , we would have been lost . Mrs. Sheffield consulted parent Mr. Blue planned schedules Mrs. Smith talked with Toni Latham about her schedule Rita Powell listened while Mrs. tives . McKenzie pointed out alterna- English and History Widened Communication Imaginations were turned on in the Reading Lab for Kim White, Wesley Spriggs, Danny Blowe, and Wendy West by Mrs. Rose, teacher, and Mrs. Siedow, aide. Art 1 is a basic introductory course including: drawing, water color and more; Art 2 including drawing and related media; Art 3 has 3 dimensional works and crafts and Art 4 is painting - oils and acrylics. There were two student teachers helping Mrs. Witt and Mrs. Hopson; Mr. Grance and Mr. Nixon. Some of the activities of the classes were: they visited Richard Bland College to see an art exhibit and they made papier mache animals which they donated to the Baptist Childrens ' Home . Mrs . Caldwell asked students how they did assignment without paper . Mortice, Lydia, Reginald, Joe, Melanie, David, Daisy, Cathy, Bobbette, Shen. 9 Library and Reading Centers Proved Resourceful Janet Young checked out book while other students did research. The ESAA (Emergency School Aid Act) Reading Center here at Peabody Junior High is made possible under the ESAA which cre- ated a program designed to provide financial assistance in the implementation of quality intergrated educational programs for public school children. The ESAA Center is designed to help stu- dents to improve their reading skills. The program focuses on individualized and small-group instruction, implemented in a rich learning environment. Different techniques and methods are used for instruction. Learning too is provided by the machines used. Some of the machines used to improve reading are Aud-X, Tach- X, Controlled reader, tape recorder and tape cassettes. These are used to improve comprehension, phonetic and structural analysis, study skills, and vocabulary which are essential to reading. Students suggest activities and enjoy group discussions, pleasurable reading in the library and from the classroom library of paperbacks and magazines, viewing film and filmstrips, playing reading games, sharing books, shar- ing news articles. Tony Mayfield learned to use reading machine as Mrs. Edwards checked his progress . 10 A Clean School and Good Food Helped Mr. Lawrence, Building Foreman, placed call for repairs.
