The musical was a great hit with great action throughout the whole show. One highlight of the show was a fight between the Red Baron and Snoopy aboard his make- shift sopwith camel doghouse. Mrs. Rem and Mrs. Voth directed the production along with Mrs. Keeler's help in choreography and Miss Voth, a student teacher. The assistant directors were Janet Gillet, Trica Holm, Patsy Torres and Pam Branson. The cast consisted of:Charlie Brown- Lyle Leppke, Lucy-Janet Gillet, Snoopy Galen Roberts, Linus-Gregg Webster+ Lynn Preheim, Patty-Janelle Stucky+ Becky Keeler, Schroeder-Randy Graham+ Walter Castleman. 1. Walter plays, Moonlight Sonate. 2. Only 2,863 more lunches to go, sighs Charlie Brown. 3. Smooth talking and fast action on Gregg's part. 4. Crash, Boom, Woof! plays the band. 5. Ouch! Instead of one play, there were six short stories. They were: The Robber Bridegroom, The Little peasant, Henny Penny, The Master Thief, The Fisher- man and His Wife and The Golden Goose. The play cast members went through rehearsals nightly after school. 2. Everyone stands in line waiting their turns to go on and perform. 3. Some people just can't stand still, Mark says to Trent. 4. Mrs. Wentworth, one of the cooks, sells ice cream at noon. Dale Suffield looks for an idea for an art project. Schools out and Chet Maynard is ready to go home. Kathy Steele and Tracy Youngblood discuss term papers for History. When vandals broke into the school they splattered ceramic paint on the art room floor. Work comes in great quantities , decides Anthony Strasser. Rodney Morgan works feverishly fixing a tire in shop class. Burns kids getting on the bus for the long ride home. 10 1) Brad Nightengale and Rick Hedrick began their game with a leaping start. 2) The faculty team shows their enthusiasm as they rush down the court. The players pictured are Chuck Keeler, Roger Foote, Mr. Deutschendorf, Mr. Brown, Arlen Gfeller, Pierre Cubbage, and Mr. Egan. 3) Randy Taylor makes a fine shot to aid his team. The bowling team, (.pictured above) Rick Hedrick, Wayne Criger , Stuart Ratzloff, and Harold Brooks , competed in Salina this year. Rick Hedrick received third in Division II, and Wayne Criger placing third in 6th Division. A few of the students were lucky enough to get to go skiing this year. Pictured at the left are ; Stuart Ratzloff , Rick Hedrick, and Harold Brooks. It was more or less a leisure trip, since they had no competition. 11 STARRY STABRY NIGHT 1. Rodney Morgan and Amy Taylor thought they'd never finish hanging streamers. 2. Steven Meirowsky and Kathy Steele inspect the mirrored ball. 3. Danny Farr and Arlen Gfeller make sure everything's secure. 4. Danny Farr and Rick Cox add the finishing touches as Lyle Lepp- ke and David Martinez enjoy watching. 5. Cindy Strasser, Sarah Morgan, Carol Taylor, and Tracy Youngblood put up streamers. 6. Dan Pi land had the honors of installing the mirrored ball. The '77-'78 Prom theme was Starry Starry Night. The evening was an enjoy- able one with a gracious banquet and talented band. Fantasy was the band chosen to perform. Juniors had a tough time deciding which group to get, but finally chos ; Fantasy for their higher playing abil- ity. After the banquet Mrs. Arevalo,wife of the Burns Grade School Principal, sang some songs and play- ed her guitar. The dance lasted from 8:00 to 12:00. The movie started at one o'clock. The movie attended was presented at the Fox Theater in Newton. 12 PROM The Worlds Greatest Lover was the movie watched with one eye. The Juniors thought it best to cater the banquet this year. The caterers were from Augusta. For dinner: ham, scalloped pota- toes, corn, rolls and butter, and tea was served 1. Mrs. Arevalo, wife of the Burns Grade School principal, entertains throughout the banquet. 2. Scott Wilbur shows how easy it was to get down to the good music. 3. Mr. and Mrs. Patton chaper- oned the dance and also atten- ded the banquet along with the other teachers. 4. Quite a few of the guys wore tuxedos including Jeff Mel lot and Bruce Snelling. 5. Taffy Culbertson reflects on her past year at Peabody High School. 6. Everyone had a great time, especially Buddy Mayo dancing with all the girls. 15 1 T HE 2. G R 3. 4. 5. Gene Rump, from KAKE Radio Station,was the guest speaker. Edwin Stucky received a gift for his long years of service at PHS. This was his last year as custodian. Becky Keeler and Lyle Leppke v ere two of the ushers for the evening’s ceremonies. Becky Vogelman gives a big smile as she received her diploma. Wanda Dumas seems like she's sad that she is graduating. 6. Highlights were the crowning of the Queen Renae Brenzikofer and extinguishing the fire of the Halstead Drag- ons, 32 - 6, for the twenty-fourth straight win. The dance was held in the JH gym with the band Saraha. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. The Queen with her attendants Becky Vogelman and Deb Holm reign over the game. Escorts were Bruce Snelling, Roger Foote and Jeff Moore. The Homecoming Float Contest was won by the Class of '78 with the theme Gong the Dragons. Renae waits patiently for a warrior vic- tory. Cupids were : Grace Edmonds, Tommy Foth, Amy Haehn , Ty Frederickson, Roxanne DalIke and Scotty Shaw. 16 scholarship honor society 1. This year’s National Honor Society members were : ROW 1 : Lynn Jones, Lance Flaming and Ronda Schmidt. ROW 2 : Lyle Leppke, Becky Keeler, Deb Holm and Diane DeForest. 2. Arlen Gfeller received a pin and bar for scholarship from Mr. Web- ster and Mr. Arevalo. 3. The guest speaker for the banquet was Phil Coleman. He is a teacher at Brown Mackie College. 4. This year’s scholarship students were: ROW 1 : Lynn Jones, Janelle Stucky , Carol Taylor, Carrie Egan and Kathy Meir- owsky. ROW 2 : Ronda Schmidt, Gregg Webster, Max Cooper, Diane DeForest,Renae Brenzikofer , Becky Vogelman, Lisa Clark and Arlen Gfeller. ROW 3 : James Unruh, Kent Leppke, David Cooper , Deb Holm , Lani Woodruff , Pam Stucky and Donna Bloomer. Not pic- tured : Colleen May- nard. 17 Q u E E N 0 F C 0 U R T S It's that time of the year again for some lucky girl to get crowned as Queen. This year the lucky girl was Dianna Brewer. The crowning ceremon- ies were held prior to the game. Our opponent for the Queen of Courts game was Hills- boro. We had a whopping vic- tory of 84-50. For entertainment at the dance there was a DJ, Gail Kiger.from Hutchinson. Besides the good music, he put on a good show with many types of strobe lights. 1• Candidates for Queen were Lynn Jones, Dianna Brewer and Diane Deforest. 2. Queen of courts game against Hillsboro was a victory for our side. 3. Jodie Howell looks worried she is going to fall right into the middle of the decorations. 4. Amy Taylor and Kim Shaw decor- ate the little gym for the dance. 5. Queens and Escorts : Top row : Mark Maples, Jeff Mellott and Bruce Snelling. Second row : Diane DeForest, Dianna Brewer and Lynn Jones. 18 Banquets are a big part o f the Peabody High School year. Held mostly in the spring, the banquets give organizations a chance to meet with their par- ents, supporters, and friends over a relaxed meal followed by an informative program. Banquets for this year included: FFA Greenhand Night on October 7th, FHA Father-Member Banquet on Feb- ruary 6th, FFA Banquet on April 14th with Dallas Paul as speaker,Junior-Senior Prom April 29th,Athletic Banquet on May 2nd with Jim Dickey a s speaker, FHA Mother-Member Ban- quet on May 4th and the Scholar- ship Banquet May 9th with Phil Coleman as speaker. (1) The head table at the Ath- letic Banquet included the high school and junior high coaches, their spouses and the speakers. (2 and 3) FHA Father and Member Banquet. They all had lots of fun with races and games. (4) Some of the real good food at the banquets, it was all ap- preciated, thanks a lot. (5) Students eating at the Scholar- ship Banquet. (6) FFA'ers munching on their grub at one of the banquets. B a n q u e t s tN 19 STATE ACHIEVEMENTS This was a very good year for Peabody in many ways. Twice as many of our groups and organizations went to State. Not all won, but they gave it their best shot. 1. PHS Football team went to State with a 9-0 winning record. They were up against the long running champs Beloit. 2. Two members of the Writing Class went to a State Yearbook Contest in Lawrence. 3. Band soloists and trios went to a State Contest and scored ones. 4. Forensics had two of its members go to State. 20 OUR HEROES ★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★ 1. The two-man, and four-man golf teams went to State. 2. Four members of FFA became State Farmers this past year. 3. Vocal Class had two of its members go to State and get ones. 4. One girl basketball player made it to State for the '77-'78 season. 5. One of the guys on the track team went to State for the 880. 6. Peabody High School Band competed in a State Band Contest in Hutch- inson. 7. One guy on the basketball team went to State. 21 VAL SAL The Valedictorian and Salutatorian for the class of 1978 were Diane Deforest and Deb Holm. It's of the highest honor to be chosen for the positions. 1. Diane gives her Valedictorian speech. 2. Deb relaxes after lifting weights in Advanced P.E. class. 3 Diane in a moment of pleasure, not worrying about school work. 4. Deb gives the audience her speech as Salutatorian. 5. Diane gives her all out smiles to everyone. 6. Deb was very active in many clubs, especially band. 22 a ■■★★ ■■ ★★ a : WAR R I ORSt T0 STATE - 1977 This year the Warriors did far better than the preseason poll predicated. They were picked to be second in the MKL under Fairfield, but they went undefeated in the league and continued to win until they reached the 2A state final's game.At the state final's game the Warriors lost 37 to 8 to a tough Beloit team. The Warriors ended their season with a 7-0 record in the league and a 12-1 record overall.The Junior Varsity ended the season with a 3-4 record. 1) The Warriors ended the season with quite a collect ion of t roph ies Front row;District champ- ions, 2A State Runners-up Sub-State champions. Lisa Clark 21. 2) Becky Vogelman 34 back-bumps the ball over the net while Rachelle Brenzikofer 15 waits in position. The team ended their season with a 1 and 6 record and with great expectations for next season. Good luck girls. Warriors have a late start With football season lasting until a week before the first basketball game, the Warriors were at a disadvantage when the season began. The Warriors had a bad start, but they ended the season with 13 wins and 8 loses This was good enough for 2nd place in the league and to win the regionals. The B-team ended their season with 5 wins and 7 loses. The Freshmen team fin- ished their season with 4 wins and 5 loses. 1) Brian Stucky, Kevin Helmer, Rick Cox, Coach Deutschendorf , and Coach Franchione watch the game. 2) David Martinez, Brian Stucky, and David Mellott put up a tough defense. 3) Kent Leppke manages to make a shot. Girls track team didn't have a very eventful season this year. However,they did have much success with their J40 relay. He had many duties including teaching English to the Jr. High classes. He also accompanied his wife on the guitar at the Christmas program. p.e.s. principal Mr. Glover was principal of P.E.S. He worked very hard this year by being Mickey Mouse in the Halloween Parade. He is presently Govenor of District 3 of the Kansas Elementary Association.
