This year the speech and drama students attended a forensics clinic in Wichita where they saw examples of various forensics contest events. They also participated in discussion groups and received assistance in preparing themselves for the drama contest season. The forensics team participated in the Invitational Forensics Meet at Remington, and a forensics meet at Bethel College in Newton, and the MKL Forensics Meet at Moundridge. Greenhand night was a hamberger fry to welcome the Freshmen. In October Peabody was host for the District Horticulture and Ento- mology Contest. In January the members enjoyed an evening of fun at McPherson YMCA. In February they celebrated National FFA Week. The Peabody-Walton Farmers Grain Co-op sponsored a field trip for FFA members. They visited Farmland Industries at McPherson and Hutchinson. The Annual FFA Banquet had its usual large attendance. This year Harlin Unruh and Bruce Burke were selected as State Farmers, and David Harder and Ronda Schmidt were picked as the South Central District Pro- ficiency Award Winners in Rural Electricity and Forest Management. The PHS Vocal Music Department pre- sented their fall concert, With A Voice of Singing. The concert in- cluded light popular numbers, some Thanksgiving songs, and a sing along with the audience of several Thanks- giving favorites. In addition to the Christmas musi- cal concert, the Peabody Junior and Senior High Vocal Departments pre- sented To The Glory of the King, a concert of music and poetry depicting the Christmas story. The Spring Vocal Concert included a lighter type music and some special numbers from Oklahoma and Fiddler on the Roof. The National School Chorale Award was presented to Koni Krause at this program. The Vocal Department, combined with 2 2 the Forensi’cs Department, did a fan- tastic job of presenting the musical, No, No, A Million Times No. In addition to the concerts and the musical production, the vocal department also provided special music for the Memorial Home and Cedar Rest, various clubs and churches. The Boys' Quartet performed at churches as well as for the Senior Citizens and the Scholarship Banquet. People in the community enjoyed a year of fine music presented by the Vocal Music Department under the di- rection of Miss Kathy Voran. Miss Voran was a graduate of Bethel College and had had particular success in her department this year. This was her first year of teaching. The commu- nity was saddened by Miss Voran's death. The Jazz Ensemble consisted of some of the best musicians in the high school band. In January the Jazz Ensemble attended a performance Jazz Clinic at Hutchinson Junior College. This clinic included groups from leading high school music programs in the Wichita-Hutchinson area. In February the PHS Jazz Ensemble opened the events at the sixth annual Central States Jazz Festival at Kansas State University. Nearly 30 junior high and high school modern groups were invited from a wide area of the state; however, Peabody was the only group from the MKL or CVL at the festival. During their annual spring tour, the PHS Jazz Ensemble played at Cheney in the morning and at Fair- field High School in the afternoon. Their last performance was the annual Jazz Ensemble dance. Six PHS instrumentalists were chosen for the District Band which includes students from all size schools in the district, including Wichita, Hutchinson, and other large schools in the area. Those selected for the Honor Band were David Glassner, bass; Albert Throckmorton, trumpet, and Galen Roberts, contra- bass clarinet. Selected for the second band were Mike Hodges, bass, Jamie Crawford, alto saxophone, and Koni Krause, tenor saxophone. THE SAXOPHONE TRIO, Janelle Stucky, Jamie Crawford, Koni Krause, received a I rating at the MKAL Festival. One judge commented that this was the finest saxophone trio he had heard perform on the high school level in 40 years of listening. The saxophone trio also received a I rating at the State Music Contest also. THE FLUTE TRIO, Rhonda Schmidt, Lynn Jones, Felisa Yoder, received a I rating at the State Music Festival. THE TRUMPET TRIO, Stephan Clark, Albert Throckmorton, Pierre Cubbage, received a I rating at both the MKAL Festival and the State Music Contest. 29 PEP BAND In addition to providing peppy music for our own basketball games, the Peabody Pep Band was invited to play at a Bethel College basketball game in Newton, Kansas. GALEN ROBERTS IS DRUM MAJOR 30 'Dau tc tu Dia This year's Junior Play was a mystery-comedy entitled, Double in Diamonds. The cast included Rudy Hilliard as George Webster, an insurance investigator; David Glassner as Mickey Kinton, who is a jewel thief; Deb Holm as Kyle Kinton, Mickey's wife and partner; Lynn Jones as Maxine, the ex-convict maid; Ronda Schmidt as Thelma Cassidy, a farmer's wife who recently became wealthy; Diane DeForest as Allison Cassidy, Thelma's daughter; Bob Riggs as Edgar Merritt, the insurance lawyer; Goyia Mosiman as Helen Findexter, a sarcastic wealthy woman; Scott Wilbur as Wilbur Findexter, Helen's unhappy husband; Brad Richter as Grant Chandler, a wealthy playboy. Line up over there. 31 32 '71 , 4 74tiCtia i 7ime4, 'Ha The PHS vocal music and drama depart- ments cooperated in the presentation of a musical melodrama, No, No, a Million Times No. The musical comedy was full of excitement and laughs. The entire action took place in a farm- yard. A highlight of the show was the rollicking dance by Becky Keeler as Emmaline, and Lyle Leppke as her heavy- footed but lighthearted boyfriend. Iffy Cann. Other amusing characters were: David Branson-Pappy Quakenbush, Janelle Stucky-Nellie Quackenbush, Koni Krause-Birdie Seed, Albert Throckmorton-Noble Hart, Aaron Arm- strong-Stafford Blackman, Janet Gillet- Gwendolyn Finefeathers.
