But now we, the seniors, must leave Peabody l-ligh School-we will encounter an altogether new kind of world. To the underclassmen we sayi Make the best of your years at Peabody-Be ready to enter the world. Be prepared for the future of tomorrow. Take advantage of your opportunities. To our teachers who have helped to guide us in the right pathways of learning, to the classmates with whom we have grown in knowledge and the friendships we have made we dedicate this yearbook, that in years to come we can always look back with pride at our yearbook and remember our four wonderful years at Peabody l-ligh School. The Senior Class l Hail Alma Mater, Peabody High. Our thoughts are with you They will never die. We'll stand beside you. We will never stray From our Alma Mater, Maroon and Gray. 2 Table of Contents f 5 A65 f gy Faculty 4-7 W Seniors 3-47 4 Homerooms 48-61 , , Clubs 62-79 x Sports 30-85 P-X Y G You have arrived at that milestone in your life where you wonder why the last event in your high school life is called Commencement ln a few short months, through experience, a realization that you are just beginning will come to you. May the knowledge and the training you have received at Peabody fit you adequately to go, after Commencement, into a competitive adult world and to win a degree of security and success. A recent survey states that seventy- one of the most wanted jobs in the United States require a high school diploma. You are fortunate, therefore, that you have this Open, Sesame, that you have met the first require- ment. l hope you will not be content to stop there, that you will seek further training so that your family, your friends, and your high school may be proud of you always. Wayne H. Mong Nearly all the members of the i957 graduating classes will live at least the year 2000, and your education must prepare you to live in a world which is radically different from the one in which your parents and teachers were reared. The greatest task of the latter half of the twentieth century is to create out of our confused, chaotic world community a world neighbor- hood based on peace, freedom, justice, and better living standards for the family of man. Today the world is your community and the two and a half billion men, women, and children on the globe are your neighbors. It is our sincere hope that at Peabody High School you have begun an education which, continued, will fit you to be effective members of communities, families, the nation, and the world. l-lomer C. This agency is advert.ising for the music program to be presented here tonight. But now l see our radio car is approaching the Oriental Theatre which was designed by Richard Fiddleman and is owned by Sam Leff, who seems to be seeking a monopoly in theatres, The walk is congested with the usual crowd of music fans. From their limousine, Barbara Sheck and her husband, a wealthy San Francisco broker pass into the theatre with their guest, Marion Hess, recently made an heiress by the death of a distant relative. A celebrity from the sports world is arriving now. Here he is, Jack Creed, a well known professional baseball star who has been making sensational records for the Boston Red Sox. Also approaching is Bob Zenk, daring young aviator who recently smashed the trans- oceanic speed record and his co-pilot George Boyd. Following them are Bob Buckley, their air craft mechanic and Harvey Zion the well-known rocket ship designer. l see that Mal Stauff, the brilliant doctor who is waging war against cancer, has taken a night off from the laboratory to attend this opening with his nurse-assistant Carolyn Rees. With them are Karen Black, head nurse at the New York hospital and her husband, a promising chemist. They are followed by Barbara Young, a famous hair stylist, Aundra Swope, vice-presi- dent of the New York Stock Exchange and Yvonne Thierry, the new nuclear physicist every- one has heard about during the year. As I enter the lobby, I notice the very beautiful murals painted by the noted artists, Richard Tissue and Laura Reight. There I met my old friend, Wilma Gindler who is now a successful lawyer. She tells me that Alvin Catz is teaching psychology at Princeton and that Berkley Benson is singing with a popular dance band. As she leaves me, I stop to speak with Florence Bender, New York columnist who speaks of Donna Ains- man, who is enjoying her honeymoon in Ber- muda, of Mary Oburg who is traveling about the country, of Louise Riedmaier and Gail Noden who are doing interpretive work for the govern- ment and of Reggie Johnson who is engineering the building of a new highway into Canada. As I seat myself, I see in the chairs opposite me Joanne Studt and her husband, a wealthy oil baron, chatting with Joyce Grudzinsky and her fiance, a successful automobile manufacturer. Before me are seated Melvin Labovitz and Wayne Tarshis eminent pharmacists and Phillip Kuber, professor of physics at the University of Iowa. Waving to me from their loge seats are Beverly Manning, who operates a secretarial school and her instructors in that school, Judy Allman, Ruth Berks, Marion Washington and Ruth Pacella. Seated next to them are Carl Gentile and Jim Fleishauer president and vice president respectively, of an international print- ing firm. The Armed Forces are represented by Czerna Neal, a major in the Women's Armed Forces. Furloughs were given to Joseph Killian, Norm Westwood, Russell Jackson and Jerry Weisbeker, the crew on the airplane that made a record run around the world, and Bob Dudt who just re- turned from a skirmish on the high seas. But now the warning lights are flashing and I must end by wishing everyone in the program good luck. To one and all, this is Marcia Caplan and Joanne Emery, representatives for the National Broadcasting Station, saying, Good-Night. DeFronce - Many weeks of long re- hearsals, hard work, wor- rying, and memorizing were compiled into one evenings performance which was held in the 3 4 L , Peabody High Auditor- ium. It was the open- ing night of Good News on Broadway, pro- duced by the class of way back in '57 from Peabody High School. Since it was such a smash, there was quite a celebration rolling at MICHAEL KAY'S supper club. I stepped in for a few minutes to see what was going on. I .recognized a group of fellows in uniforms sitting around one table, So l went over NATHANIAL JONES, l cried, Don't tell me you're a captain in the Marinesl Sure enough, there he was. And there beside him, their buttons shined, were three naval admirals, JOHN INDOVINA, JIM GREER, and JOHN TIBBITS. In town on leave for the opening night were FRED VAN RYN, HARRY SCHOELLER, ERIC SABOLSICE, and JIM SEAGER, all from the Ar- my, along with their Army psychiatrist, NATHANIAL JOHNSON. While we were talking, the wealthy business man, EUGENE GRUMER, came dashing in ifol- lowed by his harem of secretaries, JUDY MA- LONE, PAT MARCHITELLO, JANE MAINIERO, ELIZABETH McNEIL, and VIRGINIA MOODY. He must have been in trouble again as usual because he was looking madly around for his lawyer, JIM VAUGHN. He finally found this great man in conference with people from all over the world discussing international law, NEENA NORRIS, from France, SONG DON LEE, from Korea, BARBARA SHEPMAN, a Spanish expert, SUZZANNE LEONE of ltaly, OLIVER JONES from Germany, and SHIRLEY PASEKOFF, the world traveler, I hope Eugene straightened out his difficulties because I lost interest when the menus were passed, Two big trucks from MIKE ROSSMAN'S Spaghetti Factory pulled up, driven by MARVIN MORRIS and MAC TRUCK, to deliver the food, The meal, planned by CAROL EMMEL and FRANCES STEIN, was served elegantly by sing- ing waiters ARNIE MALLINGER, ALVIN MOSES, and ED SHAPIRO. While we ate MC. BOB DAVIES introduced the entertainment for the evening. JANICE MILLER and LARRY BERGER danced to the strains of ANN KENNEDY'S newest arrange- ment, aided by BARBARA GRAFIDAS, OLIVIA HALLUMS, SANDY GERON, PEGGY FARRELL, DOROTHY LOVEJOY, and MARGARET HUBER in the corps de ballet. STEVE TANNENBAUM and his All Stars, DAVE TANNENBAUM, JERRY KURTZ, and GEORGE DAILY carried a cool Calypso tune, while muscles DICKIE KLECKNER performed his exceptional weight-lifting feats, The entire show was broadcast by disc jockey ESTELLE McCAINE over JOEL KATZ'S radio network, The dance band, conducted by ALAN REZNICK, struck up a jazz tune. Among others in the combo l noticed VIVIENNE NUSSER at the harp, and PAULIE SHISSLER, PAT ROBERTS, MARGARET PAYTON, and BILLY WEBER. Through the window l saw a big black Con- tinental draw up to the door chaufferred by RICHARD ERNST. As doorman, BOB HUNTER, swung open the green door, in stepped the fam- ous actress SHEILA COHEN with her producer DON MULLEN. Immediately, over rushed news- paper calumnists Louella Parsnips, MARY LOU HUEMRICH, and IONA ELOVITZ to interview this leading personality, Their reviews stated that She looked stunning in her new hairdo by ZIGARELLI of Paris, her jewels by SORALI LU- BARSKY, and her gown by AUDREY CODDING- TON. The green orchids she wore were from PAUL LIPKIND'S florist shop and her basket purse was woven by MORRY BOURD. She had just flown in from visiting CHARLES MEADE in Missouri. She flew in a TOM VIVIRITO Con- stellation plane piloted by TOM LININGER and HARRY BRASH, and co-piloted by ANNA MARIE BANKOWSKI, MURRAY GOLDSTEIN, and JOE HENRY. As soon as she was helped off the plane by stewardess ELEANOR KELLY, she hurried down to BOB WALIKI and BURT STEIN'S auto showroom where she picked up o car and hurried to meet us. Suddenly there was a scream from across the room. As Army's star football player DICK SLIFE was demonstrating a new football tackle for PETE PETERS, he accidentally tripped pretty waitress DOROTHY FELLER. Her tray landed unfortunately on JIM SlLVESTROS'S head. Doc- tors ANITA SAGONE, CHARLES WACKEN- HUTH, TONY VALETTA, CAROL SHAPIRO, and PAUL ORTH came rushing to the scene, as- sisted by nurses NANCY MILLER, LEE WIL- LIAMS, CAROL O'CONNOR, and ELEANOR FURACH. While SUSIE FULTON and CAROL WIGTON administered hot water bottles, FLOR- ENCE WILSTEIN and JOANNE WILSON ran for an ice bag. Ambulance driver SHELLY SLONE and policeman BILL WILSON and DON NICHOL appeared on the scene. When the excitement died down I started to move around to talk to some other old buddies. I found BARRY HELFAND, star basketball play- er from Yale with his manager WALTER BANZI. They were discussing swimmer CAROL REIN- HARD'S latest channel crossing with Pirates GEORGE SIFORD, BILL McADAMS, JOE HEN- DRICKS, and CHARLES FARRAH. I found WAKEFIELD HEXON hard at work dictating his second great book to secretaries MARY LOU HONS, VIRGINIA CATULLO, FRAI- DA CAPLAN, PHIL CHICHIRICHI, ROSALIE CALCAGNO, and JOSEPHINE DENTICI. His book is to be about GARY GRENDEL BRIGGS' Nobel Prize winning experiment in chemistry. Then in walked the three runners-up for the Mrs. America Contest, ROBERTA HUGHS, FRIE- DA ADELMAN, and PEGGY BRODERICK. They all wore dresses designed by CAROL BROWN. I had been talking to DOROTHY LUCAS and MARILYN AINIS, when I bumped into cartoon- ist STANLEY MARKS, who draws Peanuts We were glad to be informed that CHARLIE BROWN finally did receive some Christmas cards, even though it was the l9th of June, from MARIAN DUGAN, HOWARD EISEMAN, ROSE POFI, and MARTIN CHILDS. KEN HOFFMAN came in rather tired from fighting a forest fire caused by picnickers SUE SMITH and REGINA PROVANZANO. I was surprised to See the famous engineer JACK WRIGHT, who has just rebuilt the Golden Gate Bridge, along with his very private secretary NANCY SWANSON. They reported having seen recently in IVAN CAPLAN'S pawn shop in California, JACKIE FLETCHER, LINDA JACO- BY, and JAMES H WILLIAMS. I noticed MARY ANTLOGER, ROBERTA PERRY, JANICE STE- VENSON, and JUDY SMITH, all a little sun- burned from watching RICHARD PEASE that afternoon win his first million driving his stock car at ED ROBSON'S racetrack. Lucky STUART TURK was photographing beautiful models for next years calendar. Pos- ing were LORRAINE SCHMIDT, ESTHER SMOZ- SKI, JOAN KRIZAN, JACKIE MEYERS, DORO- THY CAMMINS, ANGELA PARILLO, ROBERTA QUINLAN, ANNA MACHETA, LORRAINE GET- TLEMAN, NANCY RESEIGH, and URSULA HEROLD. IBRAHEEN GHAFOOR is now rich due to his prosperous real estate business, He has recently sold homes built by BILL PETERS to mortician McKINLY FARRIS and business women LOUISE PROVIANO, DONNA TARR, MARIE FAZIO, and PATTY PITTORE. Poets BASIL VERGATTO and STEVE BARKO- VICH showed me samples of their latest works: To be a mechanic is my ideal To make the cars really peal I am going to attend mechanics school To make the cars sound really cool. -Steve B This little boy with the pompador on top ls going to Michigan State to study floral crops Once he is there two years or more He will know floraculture and many fields galore. -Basil V. Secretary GALE WRIGHT, called to say that ARLENE SACHS, BETSY SMELTZER, EVELYN RABNER, EILA FOSTER, SANDY HILLER, MAR- LENE MURMAN, NAOMI COHEN, JUNE MEYERS, and DAVID LEHMAN, would be de- layed because of a teachers meeting they were attending. STANLEY AKSELROD got a new job holding back the lunch line in RONNIE CAPLAN'S Cafe- teria. He was practicing singing his television commercial, written by BEVERLY SHERRY, MARLENE ROSENBLUM, and LUCY THIESSEN, while his secretary PHYLLIS FISCHER looked over the new billboard posters designed by NANCY MELLODY and RONALD DROWN, and printed by JOEL ARONSON. Electronics expert CHARLES STARZ was con- versing with dentist JOHN SHOOP and his re- ceptionist MARGIE MORRIS. At the some table I discovered agriculture professor WILLIAM H. SMITH, mechanic STANLEY PLIZZA, Duquesne graduate PAT ALDER, and accountant ROBERT PEARLMAN, Missionaries BILL MITCHELL and VIRGINIA LLOYD told us all about the wonder- ful roads CHARLES BOARDMAN, JERRY GOR- DON, ELAINE HUEMMRICH, and WALTER HORN built into the African Congo. It was growing late, and since JOAN CLARK, SHIRLEY ANTAL, NANCY McMASTER, BEV- ERLY KELLER, and DONNA HERBSTER had to be up early the next morning to begin taking shorthand, they began to get their coats, along with fellow secretaries MARLENE JERPE, CAR- OL GRIMES, JOAN HANNON, and DOROTHY HOWE. They stopped on their way out to say goodbye to a group of friends talking over old times in their former homeroom 243, beautician JANICE VAN BRIGGLE, bookkeepers JANET ZORAWICKI and JOHN McDONOUGH, psy- chologist CAROL SHULMAN and mechanical engineer, STAN BECKER. Cheerleader MARGIE HILL was leading DOR- OTHY BRUSCOE, SANDFORD GOLDSTEIN, WILFRED HERRUP, and HELENA BUTGAJE- SKI in a cheer for their college alma mater, the University of Pittsburgh. Private Secretary MARGARET BURNEY was there with all her rich and famous bosses MICHAEL MCKNIGHT, JOE PALUMBO, STEVE BEEMAN, ED WEIHRAUCH, ANDREW POSLUSNY and RICHARD GOLD- STEIN. I heard FELIX PRINZO is now the pres- ident of a large corporation. He has hired artists WAYNE HOLT, GEORGE ROTUNDA-, DAVID BURRELL, and JOYCE MATTER to dec- orate his Park Avenue apartment and also offices for his receptionists JOANNE GODDY, HENRI- ETTA TISSUE, AURELIA WRIGHT, and PATRI- CIA CARTER. Journalists PAULA GILBERT, JANE NET- TING, and CONNIE LOWENTHAL were writing a newspaper column about the important jobs of X-ray technicians FRANCIS BAKER, EVELYN LeDONNE, and WILLIAM SMITH, and lab tech- nicians MARLENE ROSENTHAL and NANCY YOUNGMAN. The party was aying down and the people leaving, As the green doors closed behind me I waved goodbye to college grads ARNIE DICK- TER, JUDY COHEN, GINA GIONTA and BON- NIE TRAGER. As I drove past the marquee advertising the Peabody class of '57's Broadway opening in Good News I wondered if any other class would ever be as successful as ours. fm June Class Vlaq Good News is the story ot Tom Marlowe who is in danger of being dropped from the football team because he has flunked his Astronomy examina- tion. Patricia, his sweetheart up to now, induces her demure little cousin, Connie to tutor Tom and a new love interest starts. Tom, assisted by Bobby, succeeds in winning the big game, and also the hand and heart of Connie, although up to the very end the odds were on Patricia., ' 46 ll Tom Marlowe Beet Saunders Bobby Randall Bill Johnson Pooch Kearney Ctharles Kenyon Patricia Bingham Constance Lane Babe O'Day Sylvester Windy Slats Millie Flo Jim Ben Goo cl ews CAST SINGING ENSEMBLE Steve Tannenbaum Pete Peters Stanley Becker Mike Kay Richard Kleckner David Tannenbaum Paula Gilbert Carol Shulman Eleanor Kelly Anthony Valetta Ed Shapiro Larry Berger Paulie Shissler Barbara Shepman Alvin Moses Arnie Mallinger Helena Butgajeski Sheila Cohen Carol Emmel Susan Fulton Elaine Huemmrich Connie Lowenthal Jackie Meyers Marlene Murman Shirley Pasekoff Marlene Rosenthal Lee Audrey Williams Alvin Moses Mike Rassman James Vaughn Florence Wilstein Harry Brash Bob Davies Howard Eiseman Wilfred Herrup Wayne Holt Sang Don Lee Thomas Lininger Arnie Malinger D ANCING ENSEMBLE Janice Miller Marjorie Hill Carol Reinhard lona Elovitz Evelyn Rabner Larry Berger Nathaniel Johnson Stanley Becker Ed Shapiro Anthony Valetta lr I s.. , ff 47 'M-Mm? , N-if ' fc f V-.'..,, ,, ., ., 9 f, f, y 'K' 'ffm , V iflv ,, ' f .3VQ14Qi:zWL5, 1'-i3.wlQ, ! ,'5',-5715 1 5 :ff-f f 151.1 1: ,515 i .L ,. , , W , V f'-ff 'z ?1,, :'.T .Jgf 3.
