Behind these old wooden doors that open each day admitting us to learn ..... we discover that we are individuals-and above all, we learn to work and live together. Peabody and our teachers guide us into adulthood and attempt to prepare us for life. As we walk through the halls and glance into the rooms ..... we see the many wonderful opportunities that we are offered. Science and Art ..... Music and Math ..... Literature and Language ..... Shops and Social Studies ..... History and Home Economics. VVhatever we choose to study is here for us. From our class will come tomorrow's leaders, engineers, nuclear scientists, artists, and the home makers. From our class will come the rich man, poor man, baker man, thief, doctor, lawyer, and the fire chief. From our class and from yours, as in the past and in the future, will come the ever Howing strength and continued growth of our Democracy. As our Pittsburgh High Schools look at the beginning of a second century of turn- ing out to the world the people of tomorrow, we hope that the Peabody's record of success may be one of continuing progress. Although many new problems will arise, these problems will be dealt with democratically and thoughtfully, just as they have been in the hundred years gone by. The Public High School, we are sure, will do its part academically and socially in bringing into the light the students who are the backbone and government of the world of tomorrow. You now have the first requirement for success-a high school diploma. Use it wisely to further your ambition in what- ever field you choose to enter. But re- member, it is only the beginning. Don't be satisfied, but strive for better training to fortify you in this very competitive world in which we live. An education, unlike wealth or even a reputation, is one of the few possessions that you cannot lose or have taken away. Therefore, I say again, use it wisely. WAYNE H. MONG Goodby, MR. BRACKMAN As students of Peabody, we felt that we were able to come to Mr. Brackman as our friend, with our problems. Through his advice, Mr. Brackman has helped us to mold our characters and further develop our minds, thus laying the founda- tion for our future security. As it is impossible for us to ap- preciate fully the advice he gave, we can thank him only through our constant use of the wisdom he offered us. To fhe 1956 Gmczluizfer of Peabody High School: Hopefully, you will discover, as you complete your high school years, that your education is only beginning, that what you have learned is but the prelude to further growth in wisdom and understanding. You need con- tinually to become more skilled in identifying and eval- uating sources of information, in understanding human reactions to various kinds of influences, in compre- hending the need for intelligent analysis before making decisions, in sorting fact from slant, distortion and opinion, reasoning from emotion. Those of you who continue your formal education will have opportunities to learn these things through the varied and interesting experiences of college and university life. But the great- er number who begin at once to participate in the work of the world, at home, in factory, mill, business or shop, must also continue to learn these important lessons through daily contacts with practical situations, through reading and study of the issues of the day. May each one of you successfully meet your individual chal- lenge. HOMER BOWER, Principal Cur Facult Q K eff KEYS?- S if? fi It .. Fin! Row: Kennedy, Howard, H. Soles, G. Fletcher, E. Uebele, W. Just driving up is Edna Scott in her powder blue Olds convertible, parking next to a pink Ford owned by Louise Menn. Look out! Here comes Diane Lenherr in her baby blue Cadillac. Inside the hall looks simply lovely. It must have been decorated by Eddie Linder Inc. Interior Decorators. I understand that we are to have a program consisting of Peabodians of '56 that made good. The orchestra, under the direction of Gary Elpern, is tuning up so let's sit back and enjoy the show. Nota bene: The programs were printed by James Dayton. The Master of Ceremonies for this evening is that prominent come- dian Larry Ober. He has just completed a world wide tour with Syl- via Ardolino as his co-worker. They have entertained the troops in- cluding Thomas Bellotti in the Air Force and James McBriar of the U. S. Navy. With that as an introduction, on with the show. Our first guest of the evening is a stylish fashion model, Lillian Green, who is wearing the latest Dior creations. Next is Shirley Davis a professional ballet dancer. Our third act is that famous quartet which has made such a success at Allen Chodock's Night Club. The Three W's and an S, Robert Weiner, Robert Wigton, Donald Wenner- sten and Robert Synan. With us also we have Adele Glickman, noted singer. And last but by no means least, we have Diane Falvo, a fa- mous concert pianist. As in all shows, credit must be given to those behind the scenes. To these people then go our thanks, Peggy Murison for the adver- tising, Joe Balkunowa for the lights, Gladys Browne for the cos- tumes, and Mary Donofrio for the hair styling. Now let's meet a few of our guests. Over there is Andrea Jones who has just finished her sixth best seller. It was on the life of a well known sculptress, Elizabeth Bogus. With her is Marsha Mallinger who is holding her own in the literary field. James Ellstrom, who is covering this reunion for the press, could almost turn it into a convention of secretaries. Just a few of them are LaGene Wilson, Beverly Wilson, Patricia Spinello, Zelda Schatz, Marjorie Parke and Janet Norman. He could also write a review on the court case which is about to come up concerning teacher's sala- ries. Jackie Cuttler, Leda Rothman and Judy Taylor have hired Burton Tansky as their lawyer to try to gain more money. It seems that they want to get into the higher income bracket with Barbara Deniziuk, Carole Rosenbloom and Phil Musick, who lights his cig- arettes with Srooo bills. Let's continue our trip around the hall to see some of our other old grads. Well, here's a famous team, Paul Magee and Renee Kleiman. Both of these are notable chemists. In collaboration with Dr. Ronald Gaudelli and Dr. Burton Gummer, they have been working in a cure PRUPHECY for air sickness. It seems that airline hostess Nancy Reed is not quite used to flying, although air transportation has picked up considerably. They now have dial phones in all planes with operators Beverly Beatty and Myrna Collins as supervisors in the Pittsburgh office. There the famous group of engineers, Richard Fiorucci, Zola Levitt, Gary Ruderman and Albert Olbeter, who have just completed a new multi-million dollar building to house business tycoon Sam Rubin, Art Rosenfeld and Sanford Bell. These men also have their secre- taries with them. Just to mention a few there is Gisela Mueller, Jo- anne Meyers, Rosemarie Lampenfield, Donna Ketley and Patricia Jones. Also in this building is a business machine operator Doris Boltman. Here is a happy group of people who I hear have to go to a college reunion today. Oh yes, a few of the Highlanders did make it through that institution of higher learning. Here are Charles Creed, Pat Mul- len, Mattie Herring, Constantine Contis, Gertrude Buehler, Dorene Stein and Sandy Zeman. We'll meet some others later but now here comes Connie Ackerman and Francis Goldman both wheeling baby carriages. From what I have heard Alice Cromie just had twins and Virda Gordon is boasting her sixth set of quads. Marion Woomer, Delores Smeach and Priscilla Pascarell are also happily married. A few of the '56 senior class were unable to attend this reunion as they were out of town. Gordon Bingham is attending a convention of Salvation Army Oflicers in New York and Molly Burkholder has gone to Alaska. Ella Simmers had a date this evening with Mr. Evans and Nancy Schreiner is at Yale University. Dr. Peter Cohen and Dr. Bernadette Wolf along with nurses Doris Crabb, Betty Evans, An- nette Hiller, Carol Morris and Maxine Vandervort have gone to the war front to aid the armed forces. Maryanne Stites, Patricia Spencer, Eleanor Mazer, Nancy Kentor and Esther Izenson have also left Pittsburgh to join their husbands. Earl Eckhardt and Robert Perry are now very successful foresters. They are just two of the men who cut down your Christmas trees each year. Ken Robson, Vic Prestegiacomo, Fred Presser, Marshall Pase- koff, Edwin Long and Ernie Larson, who have also succeeded in life, just left for the stock car races where they hope to see Morry Frankel, fifty time winner of the Memorial Day classic, take the purse. With them are their secretaries Patricia Hallums, Marie Gwin, Rosemarie Gigante, Becky Cohen and Greta Cleban. I do hope this race doesn't end up in a trip to Karl Sunday's Funeral Home. As we leave this happy reunion for another 2 5 years we see Virginia Clark, Carol Dean, Elinor DeMarco and Dorothy Hamilton waiting for their respective husbands. And Phyllis Ball and Annabelle Cine- fra taking off in a cab for the new play at the Nixon. I wonder, as we bid each other good-by, what will the next 25 years bring? Your guess is as good as mine. 17 THE STRAWHATTER'S CASE FEBRUARY CLASS PLAY What really happened to Magda Swanson? Did her ex-husband kill her? Where did she put that notebook? These and many other questions were answered this year in the class presented by the February graduating class. This play, The Stmwhattfrxi Care, was a mystery drama in which the lights went off, screams were heard, and a successful New York actress disappeared. After this and many other exciting events had occurred the mystery was solved, justice was done. This excellent mystery was directed by Miss Kath- erine V. Owen and had a fine cast including: Sanford Bell Dorene Stein Virginia Hays Leda Rothman Judy Taylor Alice Cromie Marshall Pasekoff Barbara Dinizuik Elizabeth Bogus Jacqueline Cuttler Peggy Murison Robert Wigton Peter Cohen Allen Chodock Bernadette Wolf Nancy Kentor Arthur Rosenfeld Victor Prestegiacomo Robert Weiner The FEBRUARY SENIOR PROM -we will have these moments to remember. On January 27, 1956, the February class held their Senior Prom at Hotel Roose- velt Ballroom with the music furnished by Billy LeRoy. The success ofthe dance can be attributed to the wise planning of the class ofhcers and the Prom Commit- tee, under the direction of Mr. J. P. Ken- edy. , ' '11 ww 9 fb ..,,' ,1 ', , ,, .. To accomplish this we shall travel to the moon for the first reunion of the class. The date, June 19, 1976, just twenty years since graduation. VVhen we arrived at the airport we learned that our pilot was Carl St. Philip. We flew in a new space ship created by physicist, Pete Cooper and engineered by Marshall Foster and George Konesky. Draftsman Vince Leonette drew the plans for the ventilation system which contains the new air for interplanetary travel, discovered by Carole Denick. Stewardesses Sara Pietragallo and Deanna Zelf served hot chocolate. 39 Such successful people as Edith Needham and Alice Goodman were quite surprised to learn that people on the moon don't require any sleep. I guess we forgot to mention that most of the class has by now moved to the moon except those on the ship who found it impossible because of family ties. Well here we are-the moon- After going to the hotel, we met on the beach where morning ac- tivities were held. Physical education teacher, Pat Armstrong led us in setting up exercises to relieve the stiffness from such a long trip. Mel Abramovitz and Wayne Shomaker, Olympic diving and swim- ming champs showed us a few tricks. When this was completed disc jockey Fred Franklin introduced Terrie Angelelli, Hervey Friss, and Billie Lesser as they sang Dave Stock's latest hit, You Haven't Changed, Ha! Photographer Ken Boden took homeroom and club pictures for the alumni Highlander. Barbara DeStefano sketched business tycoon, Warren Bassett with Robert Reid. We discovered later that Robert is a conductor of one of Warren's railroads-the last one in existence. Next we went to the auditorium where a fashion show had just be- gun. That famous radio and T. V. commentator, Rachel Siviter in- troduced the models. As Barbara Kurtz was modeling Jean Rosen- bloom's latest creation she fell, cutting her leg on a piece of sharp green cheese. Dr. Tom Cimino assisted by nurse Doreen Parry treated her and prescribed a medication from the Stuart Miller Pharmacy. Mortician Larry Kuhn stopped by to see if there was any business as his establishment is next to the hospital. During a gossip session we learned that Esther Cohen, Dorothy Cline, Eva Brauner, Jean Dailey, Ginger Hamilton, and Mary Milli- gan finally graduated from college as they hoped. After lunch we went for a walk. As we passed the sports arena we noticed several familiar faces-Jim Jackson was playing baseball and Barbara Riesmeyer and Sarah Jones did some fancy skating for us. We then left the arena and moved towards the health clinic, engi- neered by Ray Edwards, Len Ortenberg, and Harvey Bain, where Judy Brahm, Marion Brown and Ervel Rosenson have become suc- cessful as Physical Therapists. At the same clinic Psychologists Doris Kopsofsky and Nancy Bollenbacher have their oH:1ces. We then went next door to the hospital where we saw Doctor's Jim Allison and Steve Gordon talking with Nurses Phyllis Butler, Ginny Kerr, and May Herscovitch about the coming marriage of Judy Snyder to the famed surgeon, Elliott Fredland. We wanted the chance to see Nick Fiore, famed engineer, and head of the Platonnic Research Commis- sion but his private nurse, Sylvia Chinque informed us that he was too ill. Stepping outside we met salesman Alvin Goldstein selling news papers. We discovered that Wolf Lowenthal is editor of The Star Gazer and that Sid Beshkin is editing the sports page. We also saw 40 i lf 9 , f . N -:ag . , ' ,B it a 0 s g fs rl ct Q In s 'Y r fx fa fr if WE V H ill bv U g-f Z ' if 9 ec. an article by that famous author and Pulitzer prize winner, Phil Klein. The article was dedicated to his private secretaries Alene Fowl- er, Dorothy Hannon, Haryan Racusin, and Charlotte Wills. Sal Vizzini, Cadillac dealer, Hguring that we must be tired walking by now, sent enough Cadillacs for all. While we drove through town we weren't surprised to see that the many skyscrapers were designed by Dave DeMann, Bob Dingle, Art DePofi, and Quentin Robb. We tried to call on physicists Ray Turn- er and Andy Nemeth but they were too busy working on the Z bomb to see us. Our appetites again got the best of us so we went to dinner. Minis- sters Richard Grance and Paul Plamann said grace. The moon, too, has a Broadway and as we arrived at the glittering milky way we saw a long line waiting to get into the theater. Whose names should we see flashing in lights but those of the famous actress Ilene Rubin, and of that exotic dancer, Nancy Sloan. Someone re- marked that they have come a long way since their days in Masque and Wig and the Dance Club. On a poster outside we saw that next week, Marty Napolitano, Dino DePaolis and Marilyn Zitelli will combine their musical talents in a concert. Helene Barofsky, adver- tising agency head, along with Wilma Bobre, Nancy Cline, and Becky Dordas, famous artists designed the poster. Incidentally the theater was decorated by Marylin Aronovitz. We left the theater to go for another drive. Ann Blumenthal whizzed by in her new Lightning Fowl accompanied by her poodle's private veterinarian, Jack Nelson. In the park we saw Louis Silverman, Public Park Plumber, fixin the fountain and forestry major, Harry Siegman supervising the planting of and upside down tree, that has its roots in the air, and branches in the ground. Botanist Ray Dengel was cutting flowers. On the other side of the park we saw a sign that said No Tres- passing so naturally we entered and were immediately surrounded by soldiers. Fortunately they were Art Banze, Bob Clunan, Robert Simon, Frank Parker, and their commander, Janet Goodman. They let us go with a warning. Oh! Here comes that famous celebrity, Frank Coghe accompanied by world traveler, Ed Weatherby. Harold Cooper world renown linguist traveled with Ed. Alberta Balsamico, Renee Berman, Joann Nicotero, and Donna Stern, are a few of the happily married ones. I almost forgot Donna Schofield's six children who have their teeth cleaned by Dr. James Robinson. Acsa Evans, Amy Markus, Pat Simpson, Janet Mustin, and Iris Schneider are teaching at Moon High. The reunion is over and it is time to go back to earth. So, there it is, the success story of the class of June 1956. We hope that your dreams will come true. 41 Home room 3 . 44 Kyiv' 42Q,5'9f?gm f f 'VW hw v 8-117 First mtv: A. Cromie, A. Hiller, E. Mazer, P. Ball, A. Burn, L. Menn D. Hamilton, C. Ackerman, P.
