Today that Gateway Center has become symbolic of the new, progressive Pitts- burgh. Likewise in 1911, streams of boys and girls met for a common purpose at a school not far from that Gateway Center--Peabody High School. Just as the thousands of young people of yesterday entered the stately portals of Peabody, so did we in l950p and as they went forth through those same portals to take their places with confidence in the world, so shall we go forth to help in the progress of our community, our city, our nation, our world. This Yearbook gives the pictures of our life together at Peabody, with its work and its play. Those pictures, however, cannot measure fully our thoughts, Thoughts hardly to be packed into a narrow act, for only God, alone, can know the depths of our souls and What we aspired to be. 5 9-',r-'lit-sn' 1'--'gr es-:3.3---5,-:'----1Q..-..-a,-- -v .b-. At Peabody, student leaders have proved themselves extremely capable of carrying out a variety of academic and extra-curricular projects. We hope they will continue to lend this active support to the progressive programs of their com- munity after graduation. 5,14-'Ziff Q,-A41 6 AN institution progresses by reason of the individual achievement of its members. To insure progress, each suc- cessive graduating class must lift a little the previous level of accomplishment. It is our sincere hope and belief that the Peabody graduates of 1954 have learned a little better than their predecessors the lessons of all: cooperation, tolerance, good will, and self-discipline. I A Z we I 0 NE of the memolrable events for the January class of 1954 was the presentation of I Remember Mama by John Van Druten.,Directed by Miss Helen S. DeFrance, the cast put on an outstanding performance On D.6C6mbeI' 4, l953, before a large, appreciative audience. Much crecjlit :must also go to Mr. Wesley Mills and to his fine stage crew who t . . ma e e rea :strc scenery and without whom the play could never have been presented . 642, v-' I Remember Mama ORTRAYING the simple every day life of a Norwegian mother and her family in San Francisco, the play held much human interest. The actors handled the dialect very naturally for amateurs and gave a most sympathetic interpretation of the characters. The cast will always hold in their memories the close friendships they made while the play was in rehearsal. Throughout the many long hours of hard work, no one lost his good humor, and there was always a ioke whenever the tension became too great. Certainly everyone will remember the time when it took the whole cast, the stage crew, and a football player twenty minutes to locate Dag- mar's Gwendolyn. But, perhaps, the most valuable experience they had was their working together as a team to accomplish a common goal. I8 enior Prom 1954 .Q XM Y J ON Friday night, January 29, the February graduating class held their Senior Prom at the Edgewood Country Club, with the music being furnished by Brad Hunt and his Orchestra. The success of the dance can be attri- buted to the good planning of the Senior Class Officers and the Prom Committee, all under the direction of Mr. J. P. Kennedy. Although the weather conditionswere bad, everyone had a lot of fun and the evening proved to be well worth remembering. 19 JUNE CLASS 1954 ff0f3,fQ ,eff ,Iggy-ffkq STRONG group of young men and women stand on the threshold of life, looking out over a world in which the powers of freedom and slavery are locked in mortal combat. Whether or not the whole world may be made Free or even whether the free world may keep its freedom depends upon the wisdom of tomorrow's leaders. Some of these leaders will be from Peabody. 21 ANN ABELSON CLAIRE ANDERSON JAMES ANDERSON LEONARD APPLEBAUM CLARK ARMSTRONG CAROL ARNESON BETTY BAKER SCOTT BALDWIN WAN DA BASKIN RAY BARO NE MARILYN BASS RONALD BEAN J, Tse- 1 . The Meyersmen downed Wilkinsburg 7-O then went on to romp over Altoona 28-6 and to tie powerful New Castle 0-0. The wel l-coached Maroon and Gray breezecl through its five game City League sched- ule with victories over South 26-7, Westing- house l4-6, South Hills 20-0, Allderdice 35-7, and Schenley 20-O. For the second straight year Peabody won the Section l title and for the fourth year in a row remained unbeaten on the Highland Avenue gridiron. Friday, November T3, was not unluckyfor Peabody. Before an estimated crowd of 10,000 fans at South Stadium, Coach Dick Meyers brought his charges onto the field to face Coach Bruce Allen's Allegheny Sparklers for the City Championship. When the final whistle had blown, the scoreboard showed the Highlanders on top 2l-0. The determining factor was the stout defensive play turned in by Peabody which limited Allegheny to a net gain of nine yards. ,,.,,, , X 'f1 f2f'2ff-447y'i lZ'l'f?.f'f' f f t 'fin ' ??f'??Sf. f wal, '13-f1'1 f 43,4 f , f f9E3l'izffs WQJQ, f f I :fm-,f-.,,,f , .Aff ,V,! 7A TL 4 f VW.
