Through all of this his fortitude has been strengthenedland with Divine Guidance will continue to develop with the passing of time. In the dawning Atomic Age, we, the youth of America, will be offered greater opportunities than ever before-opportunities for the exercise of talent, creative ability and sheer willingness to solve the problems of life. Perseverance, self-reliance and initiative, depend- ability, thrift, honesty, and an understanding of human nature-those are the ingredients of success in any era, Whether it be the Atomic Age or the horse and buggy period. But more than anything else the road to success is paved with hard work. Real achievement rarely comes easily, and this is a lesson that youth learns early. No matter what profession or business is our eventual goal, we will find these opportunities mounting on the horizon and if we apply the basic principles of success to our life we will find the gates to achievement wide open. The world we live in-and the tools We use-may change in many dramatic ways, but, the rules of success are the same as they were in the days of Abraham Lincoln and Thomas A. Edison, of Andrew Carnegie and Henry Ford, and of Mark Twain and Richard Harding Davis, of Benjamin Franklin and Robert Fulton. Let no one tell us that opportunity is a thing of the past in this land of ours. America abounds in richer opportunities than ever before. Opportunities waiting for ambitious young men and women. With these thoughts in mind we, the graduating class, give to Peabody High School, The Post-war World. 19 Om' Clem Of fieers who were chosen to lead us in our activities 20 Ou r Senior Ofjqeers PRESIDENT NAT I .AN DIERM.-XN Yin: l'RI1:s1m:N'1' DIOHN STURGIEON SECRETARY MARY LOU MYERS bovml. BASKETBALL TEAM Coach--Mr. Meyers Finallyfwhat the school's been waiting for-and in Om' .S'r'1zim' Year tool 'l'hrough the careful, patient effort of coach Meyers and by the sweat and blood of the boys themselves tand don't think they clidn't worlel Peabody proudly flaunts a first rate. on the ball, City Championship Basketball Team! l'aced in the first half by Cliff Sinewe and in the later games by co-captain Nat l.ZlllflCl'lllZlll, these boys set an enviable record of eighteen wins and two losses to cop the City Title and advance in the state semi-finals to one of the first eight teams. Not only were these boys good hall handlers and sharp-shooters but they had a certain will to win and spirit which will not soon be forgotten by those who watched them fight their way out of an early ten-point hole to final victory over a much taller and better practiced 'liitusville quintet. The school can only show its appreciation by saying l'hauks to these boys: and we, the students, by upholding the good name they have helped to bring our school. MORE CHAMPS Some of the most valuable of Our CflLIlllf'S have received too little credit- these are the undergraduate members, those who have yet a few seasons left to play for our school. Among the outstanding lettermen of this year's team are Jack I'ViIner, PoIIy llflllllllflll, and Russel 1X'l'Illl1It'I'0l 721ll forwards. These 'boys have all participated in sports other than basketball and are very active members of the school life. XVe are sure they will continue to represent l'eabody in the future and will bring additional honor to our school. Under the steady hand of eoach Blair. the nucleus of a crack city contender for tfhis season was formed, and one off such merit that in mid-season captain Red Arm- strong of quarter mile fame and Jack VN'ilner, discus hurler, had already received bids to enter state competition. One of the main things that induced our boys to greater achievement was an impelling team spirit and optimism. f EDWARD RED ARMSTRONG Co-captain '40--mile . . , captain '47 4-ill dash, half mile relay . , . a consistent point-winner . , . two letters. track . . . Varsity Club. COACH BLAIR Peabody is fortunate in having one of the eity's outstanding track and swimming coaches to turn our soft, flabby boys into tough, hard- ened athletes. Mr, Blair has formerly eoaehed at Fifth Avenue and Schenley High Schools in this city and, though a new face among us, has not only revived a drooping interest in track and swimming events, but has also trained teams in these sports which he expects will make good showings in this, their second year. Go to it, Mr. Blair-we're w'th you! 86- TRACK TEAM First Row-S. Ferrainola, B, Vitarelli, E. Armstrong, A. Snitzer, S. Miller, R. George. Second Row-A. Hazeme, M. Flom, L Brush, F. Angelo, G. SWIMMING TEAM Another sport, new to Peabody, which has been sponsored hy coach Blair, is Sxvimniing. A large group of iwilling workers turned out for practice in the middle of football season and kept plugging' and training for a number of months. Though they did not make an outstanding showing, the coach was very pleased that they were able to stand any com- petition at all in their first year. One meet they won by forfeit and another from llfest- inghouse by a score of 3-1-25. Outstanding seniors were John Hinke, Larry Cohen, and Jack Harman. i RALPH GEORGE Co-captain '47-mile , . . steady and dependable . . . guard in foot- ball . . . letters in track and foot- ball . . .
