Comniencenient Hall was hushed and still The night orf graduation. Proud parents drank in every word Of ev'ry dissertation. A speaker's voice was droning on, Awaken, Youth! his theme, And in the rear of that great hall A youth began to dream. He dreamed a quite fantastic dream About a steeplechase. He found his classmates at his side And they were all to race. A warning bugle sounded shrill Ten minutes for the start! And with an effort of his will He calmed his fluttering heart. He tried to gaze far up the track Then fear stabbed like a knife! For it was then he realized The race track was his life! The track was covered with a haze, And he -was filled with dread For he could only di1n1y guess The barriers ahead. He tore his burning eyes away And looked upon the crowds, He saw that they were leering Fates, That they were clothed in shrouds. Then as he watched, a Fate stepped out And climbed upon his shoulder. The added weight upon his back Caused him to feel much older. The Fate leaned forward on his mount And whispered in his ear. He told the youth that he, in truth, Wlas only there to steer. cuzfasy He told the boy to look about. Upon his running mates, The worried boy then saw with joy That they too had their Fates. His wond'ring eyes then fell upon A girl that he'd once dated. Clasping her chin was his Fate's twin! He knew then, they'd be mated. His roving glance then lit by chance Upon his classes' brightest And it was bared that boy was scared For his Fate was the slightest. He saw a Fate clothed as a priest Astride a thoughtful boy, A Jester Fate winked from atop A youth whose love was Joy. A Foolscap Fate was clutching hard Holding with all his might Upon the shoulders of a lad Who dearly loved to write. But one determined fellow there VVas Master of his Fate Instead of being ridden, rode Straight through Dame Fortune's gate. There were Doctor Fates and Lawyer Fates And Fates of all description But ev'ry boy there had two Fates, The second one, Conscription. The boy then wakened with a start And roused from out his coma To see 'his classmates filing up And each get his diploma. The youth then took his place in line And raised his eyes aloftg Witli head held high, he breathed a sigh And slowly said. VVe,re off! joseph N. Worsley
