WELCH Dear Members of the Class of 1982, You are indeed a fortunate class, for the majority of you have developed self-confidence and a vision of your future. You have been mature enough to see some less fortunate and have offered them a helping hand. Some in this world still beg for the night to last a little longer and pray that morning will not come. Those with vision know that with personal commitment and reason there is a sunrise and it can be sunny and beautiful. Let us strive together, as a class, and fulfill that vision. The future is not a gift, it is an achievement. I extend my sincere congratulations to you upon your graduation from Peabody Veterans Memorial High School. Good Luck and Best Wishes, William A. Welch 18 Dear Graduates: My warmest congratulations to the Class of 1982 and, in particu- lar, to those that have been participating in voacational programs. I sincerely hope that these past years that you have spent in your respective classrooms and shops have given you the knowledge and the skills necessary to find happiness in this ever-changing world. This phase of formal training has come to an end, but learning will continue the rest of your lives. May what you accomplished in the past twelve years be a building block to success in individual endeavors. On behalf of the faculty and staff, I wish you much happiness and hope that you will visit us from time to time. RICHARD J. WHITE Sincerely, Richard J. Glenda Rittershaus was always a pillar of inspiration for the 1982 META yearbook staff while working with us. Without her guidance the META never would have had the chance for its first single step. GLENDA RITTERSHAUS DEDICATION The moral test of government is how it treats those who are in the dawn of life-the children; those who are in the twilight of life-the aged; and those who are in the shadows of life-the sick, the needy and the handicapped.” Hubert H. Humphrey, U.S. Senate 1977 Jack Wilson has supplied the 1982 META yearbook staff with the support and the confidence to do our best. We would like to thank Jack Wilson for coming to our aid when it was needed. His unselfish- ness in giving of time and ideas is most appreciated. The friendship we have gained will be close to our hearts always. The staff would like to make xeroxed copies of him, but unfortunately, we can ' t. For these reasons we would also like to dedicate the 1982 META to Jack Wilson. JACK WILSON 28 Row 1, left to right: S. Senese, W. Macone, J. Leavitt, D. Powers, T. McGinn, P. Barrows. Row 2: J. Upon graduation, the full meaning to META will now be a part of the students. After receiving their diplomas, along with entering their chosen fields of endeavor, what lies beyond them will be more than they can ever expect. I would now like to take this time to express my appreciation to the members of the META Staff who worked so well this year. 1 have gained many special friendships and much satisfaction. I can never begin to thank them for all the work they put into this yearbook. They are a super group of people and each has something special to give. I would especially like to thank one person who, in addition to his obligations as Senior Class Advisor, took it upon himself to guide us as the last moment. You are a true and great friend, Mr. Wilson; you did a fantastic job! Where were you, Phil? 61 Entering Peabody Veterans Memorial High School in September 1979, we were welcomed in the Field House by our Principal, Mr Welch who introduced our Unit Directors, Mr Faria, Mr Eagar and Mr Codair-some of us would get to know them very well. As our names were called, we joined together — former Kennedy and Higgins students — to meet our homeroom teachers and begin to learn about our new school. Everyone managed to get lost at least a few times as we adjusted to the building’s miles of corridors. Our high school careers had begun ' We soon began to feel at home under the experienced eye of our Sophomore Class Advisor, Mr. Terlizzi. Class elections were soon held as we chose Peachy Dullea to lead us as our President, We also chose Michele Irzyk for Vice President, Sandy Burns as Secretary and Mamie Halper as Treasurer. Our first task was to raise money. The efforts of our Homeroom Reps in selling magazine subscriptions met with great success as we earned over $1500.00 to begin our treasury 1 Super-salesman Glen Schuster won an am, Im recorder for selling the most subscriptions. Our first December as PVMHS students was truly unique 1 Who will ever forget the little red pails we carried around to help sell candy canes 9 A car wash at the Lowell Street Mobil Station soon followed as we continued our efforts to raise funds for future activities. The football season began on a hopeful note with the 43-0 defeat of Somerville at the opening game. That was followed by victories in four consecutive games. Then the tide of fortune ebbed, however. The varsity, plagued with injuries, recruited many promising sophomores. The loss of the last three games was a ‘downer but we kept a positive attitude. Brian Dubin, Ron Rizzo, Bob Daly. Dave Allen, Ron Williams and Dan Pimenta as well as Leo Connors received some valuable experience while playing in the G.B.L. The 1979-1980 varsity Hockey Team was young and inexperienced with only two senior skaters returning. The Class of 1982 was proud of the sophomore members of the squad: Rick Russell. Karl Antunes, Jim Bonia. Dave McCarthy. Ken Norman. Greg Rose and Ron Williams who helped the team to Third Place in the G.B.L with an 11-8-1 record. The 1980-1981 team would furnish us with some truly great hockey based on the experience these team members gained in their sophomore year. Stage One offered us a new outlet for our creative abilities. The musical South Pacific was a great success ' Rick Medina, Sharon O’Neil. Beth McGeney, Sandy Burns Debbie MacGilvray and Paula Costa were joined in the cast by Judy Buckley, Chris Pelley, Toniann Rougier, Cheryl Sternberg, Betsy Vigor. Gelnn Schuster, llene Garber, Sandi Bresnick, Susan Dulong, Lori Gershaw, Kim Kennison, Beth Ring, Maryann Salerno and Kelley Wayman Room Service was Stage One’s second production and included many of the veterans of South Pacific. Our thespians entered the State Drama Festival with their production of Twelve Angry People ’ Paula Costa was recognized at the Regionals for excellence in acting, as the play became a finalist in the State Competition We ended our Sophomore Year with a field trip to Crane s Beach for our hard-working homeroom reps and officers. We were anxious to leave our first PVMHS year behind so that we could join the ranks of upper classmen at high school. The class of 82 s Junior Year truly showed everyone just which way this group of diverse and devious students were headed. Our new president Charlie Abizaid was joined by Vice President Jim Burns, Treasurer Sandi Young and Secretary Stacey Scott to work with Junior Class Advisor Mrs. Yost ;n selecting Class Rings and the Class Photographer We began the year by selling monogrammed sweat shirts with a profit in excess of $200. We were on our way ' The first social event of the year was at the Prince House of Pizza in Saugus for a Holiday Pizza Party. Over 150 of our classmates attended and while the night wasn’t exactly a financial success, everyone seemed to have a good time. Meanwhile, our hockey team returned to the arena with a tremendous desire to win The team breezed through their regular season schedule and then entered the Eastern Massachusetts Schoolboy Tournament with an impressive 15-2-1 record. The first round of the tournament saw the Tanner veterans travel to Merrimack College on a cold March afternoon to play the talented Walpole team. Once again, the Tanners rose to the occasion and stopped the Walpole challenge in a heart-warming 2- 1 game. The next stop was the Boston Garden for a battle with cross-town rivals Danvers. No one will iorget the March 5th game between Peabody and Danvers at the Garden The game seemed completely out of reach after the Tanners fell behind 4- 1 after a period and a half. But by late in the third period, the boys in blue and white had come-back to a one goal deficit (5-4). Incredibly, with )ust three seconds remaining of the Garden clock, the score was tied ' Overtime ' The crowd was absolutely wild ' But after accomplishing one of the greatest come-backs of this - or any - season, the Tanners couldn ' t reach down for the last goal as the Danvers Falcons won the game by a heart-breaking score of 6-5. Stage One. meanwhile, was back to thrill us. In Lysistrata, we were justly proud as Paula Costa and Christine Pelley won honors in the Regional Drama Festival in February. The semi-finals in March saw special honors going to Paula Costa. As members of the women ' s chorus, Sharon O ' Neill, Janet Edmands, Beth McGeney, Chris Pelley, Deb MacGilvray, and Paula Costa won honors for our young troup of actors. We were further thrilled by Wait Umtl Dark — Stage One ' s second effort. The Class of ' 82 continued on its history-making course in January when the class officers, plus chaperone Mr. Robert Hamilton headed for the mountains with 44 other ambitious juniors At 5:30 that historic morning, the group boarded a bus aimea straight tor Cannon Mountain and some very bizarre happenings that would set the precedent for later Class of ' 82 Ski Trips. March happens to be the longest month of the school year But it was also one of the busiest for Peabody ' s greatest Junior Class ever ' On March 6th, the PVMHS Auditorium was the site lor a concert featuring the explosive sounds of Brian Derrivan, Steve Geary, Mark Rahilly and the other members of OBSESSION. It was a night which will long be remembered. It also netted a profit for ' 82 of over $300.00 Yet only two days after our stunningly successful concert, the Class again took to the mountains for our second ski trip. Once again the citizens of Cannon were very hospitable. And once again, the students requested more trips of this very nature. Dedicating themselves to serving their constituents, the Junior Class officers offered a third ski trip before the month was up. In a spacious McGinn Bus, members of the Class of ' 82 cruised north with the well -respected driver Mike the Englishman St. Patrick ' s Day was another memorable occasion as the Class sold Shamrock and Pipe novelty lollipops. Another profit for the Class treasury ' In April, the Class held its first and (probably) last dance at PVMHS Then and there the Class found out why school dances weren ' t held so often. Our Junior Year began to wind down But not before the highlight of the year — our Junior Prom. Our prom was held on May 15th at the Chateau deVille Over 200 couples made this one of the best-attended Junior Proms ever held. The $36.00 tickets included a full-course roast beef dinner, dancing to the music of MAIN STREET and a prom favor. Our Prom Queen Sandi Bresnick was joined by her court of Stacey Scott, Nadine Berger, Sue MacLean, Joanie Mulhenn, Maura Marrs, Suzanne St. Pierre. Mary Terra and Sue Youngstead. It seems as though our Senior Year began before our Junior Year even ended. Within a few weeks after we elected the officers who would lead us during our Senior Year, they were selling tickets to a Back-to-School Luau. President Charlie Abizaid, Vice President Jim Burns, Secretary Mern Ruddock and Treasurer Sandi Young began planning in May for our September 7th Luau at Kowloon ' s in Saugus. We responded by selling-out the tickets and looking forward all summer to the Chinese feast and dancing to the music of PACE. The night was everything we looked forward to — everyone had a great time 1 Senior Class Calendars were sold during September (and October and November and December) with pictures from our Junior Prom high -lighting the design of the calendars This fund-raiser was followed by a Senior Class Drawing (winner- A1 Strauss) and a very successful Parents ' Night Bake Sale chaired by Homeroom Representative Beverley Zipper We spent Columbus Day at Cy Tenney having baseball and football games as well as an unforgettable egg toss ' Kerry Boudreau and Cindy Hunt were the egg toss champs after defeating the teams of Dave Salvo and A1 Strauss and Ken O ' Brien and Amy Waldox in a special toss-off Who will forget our night at Crane ' s Castle in Ipswich as we celebrated Halloween ' Certainly not Homeroom Rep Scott MacAskill who, as Chairperson of the Ticket Committee, sold more tickets to this event than to any other in Senior Class History ' It was hard to recognize the people we had left in school Friday afternoon as they arrived at the Castle dressed as various witches, Draculas, cannibals, peacocks and even the unforgettable toilet 1 The faculty had a very difficult time selecting Best Costume Winners but finally the choice was made. First Prize went to Robyn Brown (the peacock) with Death winning second prize for Tim Muscato. Runners-up were Jill Myerow and Dan Pimenta ( Half and Hall ), Andy Diskes (the toilet), cannibals Ron Williams and Brian McHugh, Tin Man Marni Halper, Bob Daly and Dave Oliver (as bottles of Molsons and Heinekan) and Pinocchio Karen Eagar with Gepetto Helder Braz. Through the football season, Sandi, Merri, Jimmy and Charlie with Big Al Strauss ably continued our fund-raising by operating the Senior Class Concession Stand. Other Homeroom Reps and volunteers aided us in this annual endeavor. Jim Burns demonstrated his carpentry skills in reassembling the stand after its untimely collapse. Western Day was another memorable occasion for it gave all our Western duds a real work- out. We enjoyed clowning for the yearbook photographer in our cowboy outfits. Our Homeroom Reps made a wise decision in selecting football shirts as a spirit-builder. In one short week, Rep. Becky Quigley took orders for over three hundred shirts. We eagerly anticipated a February delivery of our shirts with the names of all the class members printed front and back. ld-November saw Stage One ' s production Sweet Chanty play to enthusiastic and receptive audiences. With a Homecoming Pizza Party planned for Prince House of Pizza for Thanksgiving eve, we nominated our choices for Class of ' 82 Homecoming Queen and participated in the elections. We watched happily that night as Class Advisor Mr Wilson crowned the Queen while the tunes of Big Daddy provided our dance music. Our Snowball — the Seventh Annual Snowball — was held at Joe Binnette ' s Chalet in Middleton. A turkey dinner with all the trimmin ' s was enjoyed by all Dancing to the music of FEEDBACK put us in a holiday mood for the arrival of Santa Claus ' We waited patiently for an opportunity to sit on his lap (or have him sit on our laps) as he visited each table and gave us an early gift of an ' 82 pin. Before we knew it, the Year 1982 had arrived — our graduation year On Friday, January 8th we went to the Auditorium to be measured for our Graduation Caps and Gowns. This brought home to each of us the fact that graduation was scarcely five months away. Our officers and Homeroom Reps continued to plan lor activities to keep us busy for the remainder of our high school year. A Valentine ' s Semi-Formal, a Toga Party, the annual Senior Class Blood Day, and, of course, the many activities of Senior Week were all in the works as our Yearbook went to press. But each of the events of our Senior Year at PVMHS will always carry a special meaning for each of us. Good luck to all the Graduates of 1982 93 class. The fans had come to see rings dis- tributed, another flag raised and simply to participate in a local sort of semi-religious rite. But the game wasn ' t bad, not bad at all. It was, in fact, entirely appropri- ate. The NBA couldn ' t have guar- anteed the success of the occasion any better, providing the defending world chamnions with a weak as he ' s ever been, doing a monster Imitation underneath that was nearly frightening. The rest of the cast performed admirably, espe- cially Bird (20), Maxwell (17) and Kevin McHale. But this evening be- longed to Parish. Duerod (would you believe a retreating rejection right onto Causeway Street of a Don Collins fast break shot?) and to the Ghost of Championships Past, who clearly presided over the occasion from the time the doors were opened. LANGUAGE CLUBS CAPTAIN END8LI With Best Wishes To The Class Of 1982. From Peabody Police Benevolent Association.” Hiiiiiiiij “Thanks For The Memories,” Class Of 1982 . . . J.W. When we are really honest with ourselves, we must admit that our lives are all that really belong to us. So it is how we use our lives that determines what kind of men we are. It is my deepest belief that only by giving our lives do we find life. I am convinced that the truest acts of courage, the strongest act of manliness, is to sacrifice ourselves for others in a totally nonviolent struggle for justice. To be a man is to suffer for others. God help us to be men. — Caesar Chavez 210 Peabody Veterans Memorial High School Lowell Street, Peabody, Massachusetts 01960 531-1600 Ext. 150 hr : U 3 d p- 3c D= □i 1 n 3- JT PC □ =a £1 President: Charlie Abizaid Vice President: Jim Burns Secretary: Merri Ruddock Treasurer-. Sandi Young Fellow Members of the Class of 1982, No one can deny that our Class has left a truly outstanding record as Seniors at Peabody High School. Beginning with our Luau at Kowloon Restaurant — two days before school started — everyone knew that we would leave a mark unequaled. Our Senior Year was a year of successes because of the kind of people that make up our class. It has been a privilege tor Jim, Sandi, Merri and me to serve as Class Officers during your Senior Year. We hope that we have lived up to the expectations that you had when you elected us. For us, this year has been special. We hope that it was been special for you as well. The 1982 META is the record of our Senior Year. We would like to thank the META Staff for their hard work and effort in making this book an outstanding remembrance of this very special year in our lives. The future is here and we wish all of you the very best at whatever you strive to accomplish! Good luck and see you at our Reunions!!
