Peabody Institute Library, Peabody 3 1253 00300 7877 3013. ST. ( For Reference Mot to be taken from this library V Let me introduce myself: I am Peabody Veterans Memorial High School — A large public high school Just this side of reality. What follows is an autobiography of myself — Just a small sampling of my life To let you know who 1 am and What makes me tick — Mom VI mtl. W uk 9 Mb A jta i As each new school year begins 1 welcome a new group of students into my corridors. Just so, I welcomed the class of 1977, and I can still recall Their confused yet expectant faces, when, as sophomores. They roamed my halls. I watched them learn; I watched them grow. I rejoiced in their happy days, I reached out to them in their sadness. 6 And, as I see yet another inevitable cycle Draw to a close, I prepare to bid them A fond farewell — As each glorious graduation signals the end of One of my many eras. And the beginning of one of theirs. I::- t 7 The times we shared together — Myself and my students — Are remembered only in my mind I am a brief but important part of Shaping today’s world With yesterday’s memories. Each graduating class Is yet another chapter In the unwritten biography of my Never to be experienced again Remembered only in my mind. IMLId If h { W lk i i liny ’ £:ftf ■ . i I have often experienced with you the explosion of an original thought, The excitement of sudden understanding. I have grown with you. Your knowledge is now my knowledge. You have left an indelible footprint in my halls of learning. fb L « 0 Vl ' s.t A u fj V- J hi V M, i f ft A It will be a memory-filled day for me As I watch you, with diplomas in hand. Pass through my halls for the last time. I have given you All that I am capable of giving. I have taught you all that I know. In return, you have shared with me A small part of your lives. And I now have this too. To pass on to those who will follow you. 14 And if there is any last piece of advice That I can pass on to you. It is this — Always cherish what you have learned here. But never be limited by it. Growth and change are life-long processes — You’ve only just begun. 15 liJLy,- KiL- mBm ■ ' H I 1 1 iwT ■ WE’RE For his ability to turn any class into an enjoyable experience And for his untiring dedication in the role of advisor to the Senior Class we The graduating class gratefully dedicate The 1977 META to JACK WILSON 18 My dear Graduates, My sincere congratulations to the members of the Class of 1977 on your grad- uation from Peabody Veterans Memorial High School. Today’s world is a complex one. The challenges are overwhelming, but some- one has wisely observed that we cannot change yesterday, nor begin tomorrow until it is here. What is left for you and me is to make every today the best that can be. When we can do this, we will be on the highway to success, because we will be using our todays in the best way we know how and our tomorrows will be rich with promise. May your lives be rewarding and blessed with health and happiness. Sincerely, Principal 19 ADMINISTRATION ROBERT IRELAND WILLIAM A. William JPenn In Memory of THEODORE PAVENSKI ooo Dear Graduates: Congratulations to the “Class of 1977.” I hope that the twelve years of train- ing that you have just completed will be a springboard towards your future goals and that those goals provide a better way of life for all. The theme of vocational education is “learning to do by doing,” and the learn- ing and the doing do not stop with your high school diploma. It has been said “he who has a trade has a legacy,” and this legacy can be improved and passed on from generation to generation. Value your aquired skills and natural abilities, use them to bring happiness to yourselves and to those who are close to you. Best wishes, and please visit the Vocational School from time to time as we will always be interested in you and your progress. Faced with the loss of the first three games, the team responded under the expert handling of Jr. Varsity Coach A1 Nunes and finished the season with five wins, seven losses, and two ties in a tough Greater Boston League. Ken Kocher lead the team with sixteen goals, second best in the league and as a result made All Scholastic in several newspapers. He was also selected to represent the Greater Boston League in the All East team being one of three finalists. Injuries to key players at certain periods during the season no doubt cost this years team possibly two or three more victories. Bob Zak, broken cheek-bone; Gary Hayward, a Co-Captain missed the last three games due to an ankle injury; these were just a few of the more serious injuries that curtailed a more successful year. Despite this, the team under the leadership of Ken Kocher and Gary Hayward, the Co-Captains, finished the season exhibiting the spirit and desire that great teams have. Next year with the nucleus returning a better season is in the making. This is the feeling of Coach Nunes and the returning veterans. 124 RECORD 5-7-2 Peabody 0 Medford 2 Peabody 2 Somerville 5 Peabody 2 Haverhill 3 Peabody 6 Everett 0 Peabody 1 Malden % 1 Peabody 2 Revere 1 Peabody 1 Arlington 2 Peabody 3 Haverhill 0 Peabody 0 Somerville 4 Peabody 3 Medford 3 Peabody 2 Everett 0 Peabody 0 Malden 2 Peabody 2 Arlington 5 Peabody 5 Revere 1 FOOTBALL FRONT ROW (LEFT TO RIGHT): R. The 1976 edition of the “TANNERS” football team was one of the finest in the history of athletics at the school. The “TANNERS” not only won the Greater Boston League Championship, they were undefeated and its defensive unit shut out all opponents. This year’s record was 8-0-1; the only blemish was a 6-6 tie with Lowell; an interception of a pass late in the fourth period permitted Lowell to score the lone touchdown, thereby erasing a perfect season and a chance for a Super Bowl bid. It has been an unusual year, for the team’s outstanding performers were the defensive unit. Usually the glamour boys are on the offensive team, dominating the headlines. To a certain degree this was the case as the running of Dave Panopoulos, Ron Supino, John Sullivan, John Goulos and Keith Wooley excited the fans with 147 points scored in 9 games. There have been long runs: excellent passing interceptions that would satisfy any coach. However, it has been the plays of the defense that have completely destroyed the concerted effort of the opponents. The fantastic pride and united effort of Richie LeBlanc, Ed Arsenault, Rick Bianco, Buddy Yeo and the entire defensive unit always managed to save the day. We salute this year’s football team for its dedicated and spirited work. The honor it brought to our school and city, the vast recognition throughout the Greater Boston area and the state of Massachusetts is a great credit to the harmonious intelligent way it tackled its assignments this year. 126 SEASON SCORES Peabody 22 Sommerville 0 Peabody 6 Lowell 6 Peabody 13 Arlington 0 Peabody 12 Malden 0 Peabody 12 Everett 0 Peabody 16 St. John’s Prep 0 Peabody 18 Medford 0 Peabody 27 Revere 0 Peabody 21 Haverhill 0 Peabody 62 Saugus 6 ,V £ k HOCKEY CHEERLEADERS Linda, Linda; Nancy, Maureen, Patti, Karla, Mary, Lori, Iola, Kathy; Kerry, Cathy, Dawn. Relying on depth and intelligence, the Tanners have compiled a record of 19-1 and 16-0 in the Greater Boston League. The 12th win vs. Somerville qualified the Tanners for a post season berth in the State Tournament. Peabody finished as a finalist for the Division I North Championship and a final overall slate of 22-2, a new school record. Peabody has been led by seniors Rich Gatti, Nick Smyrnios, Ken Kocher, Jim McMahon, Paul Kilimonis, Bill Ventola, Joe Carangelo, Ed Surman, and Kyle Leavitt. Coach Weitzman anticipates the re- turn next year of underclassman Kevin Murphy, Brian Murphy, Frank Walker, Bruce Toby, Tim Leary, Andy An- dricopoulos, and Larry Kravetz. 130 CROSS COUNTRY TRACK Row 1; (left to right): Bill Wignall, Mark Melanson, Scott O ' Brien (captain), Jim Holleran, Andy Estabrooks, Allan Brennan. Row 2: (left to right): Coach George Smyrnios, Mike Louzeau, Mike Fallon, Frank Keating, Dave Moody, Gary Leavitt, Elvin Perez, Assistant Coach Dan Trainor. With only one returning veteran, Scott O ' Brien, the CROSS COUNTRY TEAM started off slowly but by mid-season was at full stride and produced a record of 5-3. To add woes to the season, O ' Brien was injured in pre-season practice and missed the first month of competi- tion. Scott made a great comeback and ended up placing an excellent seventh in the state meet. Also playing an important role in the winning season were: Seniors Jim Holleran and Andy Estabrooks; and underclassmen Frank Keating, Mike Louzeau, Alan Brennan, and Gary Leavitt. O ' Brien and Holleran were also honored by being selected to the Greater Boston League All Star Team. The Junior Varsity Team was champion of the GBL, with a 7-1 record. Included on that team were: Ron Howard, Elvin Perez, Neil Kisten, Bill Wignall, Dave Moody, Mike Fallon, and Mark Melanson. 132 WINTER TRACK Row 1: (left to right) R. Leblanc, A. LaPrise, S. Powers, C. Rocker, F. Tomaz, A. McCarthy, B. Wignall, A. Fuflis. The winter track team did very well this season, finishing with an outstanding 7-1 record which gave them a second place berth in the Greater Boston League. Senior Scott O ' Brien, an outstanding runner, broke two school records, running 4:30.0 in the mile, and 9:45.9 in the two mile. The first team consisted of Clayton Rocker, Jim Pruss, and Ferando Tomaz — 45 High Hurdles; Trevor Pigott, Gary Suave, and John Tomaz — 50; Gary Hayward, Scott Zunick, and Sean Corners — 300; Rick Jean; Craig Olsoang, Tom Holleran, and Scott Wlasuk — 600; Peter Schubert, Doug Quintal, and Elvis Perez — 1000; Jay Holleran, Ron Harwood, and Allan Brennan — mile, Scott O’Brien, Mike Lozeau, and Bill Wignall — two mile; Scott Zunick, Mark Doria, Bill Curry, and Rick Disler — Shot Put; and Gary Suave, Darren Oliver, Trevor Pigott, Sean Connors, and Dave Fabrizio — High Jump. The team is looking forward to a successful season next year with many returning members. 134 HOCKEY Row 1 (left to right): Mgr. D. Sheehan, W. Hyde, M. Nalesnik, M. Rudduck, B. Marks, T. Bums, G. Grayton, P. Clifford, K. Wooley. Row 2 (left to right): Coach G. Kinnaly, T. LeBlanc, H. Garavanian, P. Gallagher, G. Wasson, D. Walsh, P. O ' Leary, T. Zeuli, K. Ledbury, B. Maguire, T. Rougier, S. Burns, J. Gill, Asst. Coach Denny Eagan. With only two games remaining on their schedule, the 1976-1977 Peabody High School hockey team had compiled a 4-7-7 mark in the tough Greater Boston League. Inexperience and a lack of a consistent offense combined to deny the Tanners the league championship which they had held for the past two seasons. However the Blue and White were in every contest and late in the season showed signs that they may very well recapture the title next year. The youthfulness of the club was evidenced by the fact that only six seniors skated on this year’s club. In addition to goaltender and captain Tom Bums were forwards Gordie Wasson, Harry Garavanian and Tom Rougier, defenseman Pat O’Leary and goalie Bruce Marks. Also playing important roles in the 1976-1977 season were junior forwards Keith Woolley, Mark Nalesnik, Frank Keating and Ken Ledbury and junior defensemen Tom LeBlanc and Bob Maguire. 136 GIRL’S BASKETBALL Row 1: E. Nager, C. Carnes, M. Hallinan, M. Zaha, S. Smith, S. Brown. Row 2: L. McCarthy, J. Sheehan, S. Flynn, P. Murphy, J. Splaine, M. Marengi, K. Noonan. Row 3: Coach Jan Briggs, M. Cunningham, W. Weiner, S. Romei, D. Holden, D. Magner, A. Spector. The lack of a top scorer for the season no doubt kept the girls basketball team from vying for top honors in the Greater Boston League. Although the team had its second losing season in a row, Coach Jane Briggs was pleased with her squad’s versatility and the ability to stay and fight it out every game. Seniors Joanne Sheehan and Sue Flynn captained the team and both were instrumental in the team’s limited success. Diane Magner at forward and Paula Murphy had fine seasons for the Tanners in the scoring column. Juniors Sue Romei, Robin Zuckerman and Mary Marengi and sophomores Cathy Carnes and Jeanne Hallinan give the team much to look forward to for next year. Defensively, Sue Flynn was outstanding on the boards this year while Mary Cunningham averaged over ten points per game. Ann Spector, a sophomore, was most versatile as a center and forward. We are really looking forward to next year. 138 mam FIELD HOCKEY Row 1 (left to right): B. Carnes, J. Sheehan, B. Maguire, E. Duff (Co-Capt.), M. Rizzone (Co-Capt.), N. Barrett, S. Flynn. Row 2 (left to right): Coach Benoit, S. Kravchuk, E. Splaine, S. O Malley, R. Zuckerman, E. Goldman, S. Romei, C. Bird. Absent was Terry Delaney. The field hockey team was excellent this year with an exceptional defensive unit. We played the most experi- enced teams in the league, losing by only a goal in most instances. The only way to become a good team is to play tough competition, which is what we did. Shauna O’Malley was an important defensive player, as well as co-captain Mary Rizzone, who was the most valuable player and also voted to the North Shore Allstar Team by the Salem News. Other key defensive players included co-captain Eileen Duff, with eight shutouts, Joanne Sheehan, who could drive a hockey ball like no other, Chris Bird and Beth Maguire, who not only added skill to the team but humor, spirit, and enthusiasm. Eileen Spaline and Nancy Barrett played aggressively in the forward line as did Sue Flynn, our two-year veteran of varsity. This year’s gymnastics season has been one of great accomplishment. The girls have worked very hard on both achieving team and individual goals. We are a young and small team consisting of girls who wish to work, learn, and strengthen themselves both physically and mentally. Jennifer Chandler and Debbie Bowman, both seniors and co-captains, have helped our over-all scores greatly. Jennifer, our all-around com- petitor, has shown great strength in her routines and has scored many points for the team. Debbie Bowman has performed on beam, vaulting, and floor exercises, along with senior Lori Gordon. Gymnastics today is a highly competitive sport that demands a lot of discipline and hard work. 142 ART CLUB The Art Club has a two-fold purpose. First the member is provided with the opportunity to work in various aspects of the Arts, developing greater skills and breadth of knowledge. Secondly, the Art Heritage of this country and New England specifically is presented through field trips and an on going cal- endar of cultural events. MARCHING BAND This years Tanners” Marching Band has been the largest in the history of the school. In addition to the ten football games, the band participated in the Pea- body and Beverly Bi-Centennial Parades and Santa Parades in both Haverhill and Beverly. In addition to a busy concert schedule, the Band is planning a tour to New York City and New Jersey in the spring. CHORUS Selected members of the Chorus au- ditioned among others from other cities, throughout the state, with the hopes that someone from Peabody would be cho- sen for district chorus. Gloria Covar- rubias scored acceptionally high and was chosen for this honor. The chorus, already has two offers for exchange concerts with students from Maine, and Rhode Island. GREEK CLUB The Greek Club was formed to intro- duce and increase cultural awareness through various programs. Activities in- clude field trips to Greek restaurants, at- tend Greek movies. International Cafe, and Dance instruction. HEBREW CLUB The Hebrew Club is an active group of students interested in studying the Hebrew culture and language. The club schedules annual events dealing with Is- raeli culture and language. Club mem- bers plan successful festivities for their Chanukah celebration and work very hard in preparation for the PVMHS International Cafe. Everybody eagerly awaits the closing banquet. MEDIA COMMUNICATIONS CLUB The Media Communications Club is a student activity that provides services to the school in the form of daily an- nouncements, video tape playbacks, audio-visual equipment assistance, PVMH-TV production and Dial Access coordination. The clubs second purpose is an out growth of the above activities. PEP SQUAD The Pep Squad is open to all students who enjoy football and enjoy cheering the Tanners on to victory, at both home and away games, the Pep Squad can be found assisting the cheerleaders from pre-game festivities until the final whistle. 146 PORTUGUESE CLUB The Portuguese Club began its first full year as a club in 1975 under the di- rection of Mrs. Codeiro. The club began as a result of Por- tuguese students who were interested in learning about and promoting their cul- ture. This year the club has grown in mem- bership due to the fact that more stu- dents are taking Portuguese and are in- terested in the culture. DUTIES OF SENIOR HOMEROOM REPRESENTATIVES 1. To collect dues from classmates. 2. To serve on committees such as Snowball, Ads for the Yearbook, and cake sales. 3. To sell tickets for events. 4. To inform their homeroom members of meetings and activities and to ask their opinions on such matters. SOPHOMORE CLASS OFFICERS AND HOMEROOM REPRESENTATIVES The sophomore class officers and homeroom representatives were elected in September to raise funds for activities for the class of 1979 and to establish and efficient method of communication be- tween the Student Council and every member of the Sophomore Class. Vari- ous fund-raising activities included a candy sale, a dance, and a car wash. SPANISH CLUB The Spanish Club has four officers and a faculty advisor. The club enjoys having bake sales, experimenting in “foreign cuisine,” visiting Spanish res- taurants, attending the Whole World Celebration in Boston each year, prepar- ing for and participating in the annual International Cafe held at PVMHS, and other activities. STAGE ONE Stage One offers every student the opportunity to participate in some form of theatre. Acting, lighting, sound, sce- nery design and construction, make-up, costuming and publicity are but a few of the areas available to interested students and alumni. All members of Stage One are enrol- led in the New England Theatre Confer- ence and the International Thespian Honor Society. STUDENT COUNCIL The Student Council sponsored many activities this year including a Donkey Basketball game and a 50 ' s Dance. In December the council sponsored a toy drive for the Salvation Army as well as a party for the children at Hogan Re- gional Center. These activities, plus other fund raising events allow the Student Council to award two $250 scholarships at the graduation exercises in June. THE TANNER “The Tanner,” the Peabody High School newspaper, seeks to inform the students and faculty of news and topics of interest pertinent to PVMHS. The eight page tabloid published quarterly attempts to cover all areas within the academic, social, and athletic environ- ment. Staff writers constantly re- search stories of interest. “The Tanner” is a student publication. M ia| FRENCH CLUB M. LeBoulluec, B. O ' Neill, S. O ' Neill, E. Bernasky, M. Goldberg, M. Fallman, B. The 1977 Yearbook Staff had more than its share of complications that seemed to hinder production. But throughout times of crisis the one main goal of creating a yearbook could not be overlooked. Without the help of our staff there would not have been a 1977 yearbook. We are deeply indebted to them for their outstanding performance and dedication. The staff would like to give added thanks to Donna Silverman, our layout editor who moved in January, to John Whippen for his photographic contribution and to Mr. Henry Morris, our financial advisor. Also, a special thanks to Mrs. Elizabeth Sheehan whose sense of humor, untiring dedication, and guidance made this yearbook possible. Sincerely, Stephanie Cayon and Kathy Mamatas 159 162 CAREER DAY 164 168 H Congratulations to the Class of 1977 NICHOLAS MAVROULES, MAYOR OF PEABODY 174 “BONA FORTUNO” to the Senior Class from All the Members of THE ITALIAN AMERICAN CITIZENS CLUB OF PEABODY 175 BENJAMIN I. It’s your world (and .yours and yours-and yours) and What you see. If was not meant for hie It’s your world, but you don’t have to be lonely Cause in your world, you are truly free! The thoughts that fill my mind Are a very special kind Because they’re home to me And me alone‘ And then I realize We all have a home inside That’s meant to be whatever we want it to be. Music of life fills my soul Music of love makes me feel whole As human history unfolds Before my eyes Says our spirits are made to be free and soon now everyone’s will be — It’s our right for us to be what we want to be.
