Summer days Been and gone Winter days Forever long. End of an era Youth has passed Golden memories Eternally last. Ellen Stein There is no doubt that I have had a special interest in the class of 1973. This is the first class that I had contact with when I came to Peabody at the Seeglitz Junior High School. It was also the first class that I was advisor to at the âoldâ high school. This class has been together as one intact group for the past five years and I have had the opportunity to see you mature both physically and emotionally in that time. During that period you have built up a cohesiveness that has enabled you to accomplish together while enjoy- ing each otherâs company. Now the class is leaving in different directions, and you will each become members of a new group. If you can help that new group work together as well as I have seen you work together over the years, then you are on your way to happiness. And so, become yourself. Because the past is just a good- bye. Teach your children well, their fathers hell will slowly go by . . And feed, them on your dreams, the one they picks the one youâll know by. Donât you ever ask them why if they told you, you would cry so just look at them and sigh . . . and know they love you. And you, of tender years, canât know the fears that your elders grew by. So please, help them with your youth, they seek the truth before they can die. Teach your parents well. Their childrens hell will slowly go by And feed them on your dreams, the one they picks the one youâll know by. Donât you ever ask them why if they told you, you would cry so just look at them and sigh . . . and know they love you. Graham Nash 54 Morning has broken like the first morning. Blackbird has spoken like the first bird. Praise for the singing. Praise for the morning. Praise for them springing fresh from the word. Sweet the rains new fall sunlit from heaven. Like the first dewfall on the first grass. Praise for the sweetness of the wet garden, sprung in completeness where his feet pass. Mine is the sunlight. Mine is the morning. This is when the boys became men in jackets and ties and the girls became ladies in nylons, fishnets, and skirts to the knees. This was the first time for travelling to classes â what did it matter that you were with your own home room all day? We still were travelling. And of course there was the underground cafeteria, where the boys couldnât see the girls eat or vice-versa . Remember Tag-Day, yo-yos, and squirt guns? By the end of the year the strange faces became familiar and with a sense of excitement mixed with a bit of fear, we entered the J.F.K. The big things at Kennedy were a library you could really go to as long as you didnât chew gum, study halls with all your friends, and our own sports teams. Braver and bolder we all had different schedules, took showers in gym and on nice days sat out on the courts. At the end of our Kennedy Era we celebrat- ed with a barbecue, Lincoln Park, and Casual Day. We made it! One year at the old Peabody High, but an important one. We were now in high school. However, not quite the big shots we were at Kennedy. This was the first time we had to suffer as under- classmen. Things were different here. Girls and boys werenât separated at lunch and we could buy ice cream. Remember worrying which gym you were supposed to be in and wondering if youâd miss your whole gym class if you went to the wrong one? Because of the size of the building, you could get away with things you once thought to be impossible, and it was twice the fun. Friday night dances were a common thing and life was beautiful if you had a friend with a car. We were grown up now and for mid- terms and finals we could come and go. Junior year started late and in mild horror. Why was our school up in the woods, look like a factory, have a long tunnel as an entrance and have no windows? It made us wonder a little. By then most of us had licenses and MacDonaldâs became the place to go. This year the library was swamped â thanks to American Pie and Carol King. Is there anyone who didn ' t get spoken to by Mr. Espindle at least once for disturbing others? Mr. Cronin became the most important teacher to most of us, despite the traumatic experiences he offered! Open Campus went into effect and those with seventh period study hall were the envy of all. Then it was College Board time and we decided that maybe college wasnât so important anyway. Our Senior Year came and we finally became the envy of the lower classmen. By this time we had fig- ured out which door was really the front entrance to the school. This year almost all of us majored in whist and Senior Lounge, while listening to whatever was making music over the intercom. Our drama club put on a fantastic âBecketâ and brought us the Propositionâ. Many waited anxiously to hear from their colleges and we all made big decisions in our lives. Now weâve graduated and itâs bittersweet, an end of an era, and a beginning 137 dHHBfifc Congratulations and best wishes to the Class of 1973 From the Staff of Gainsboro Studio Gainsboro Studio Official Class Photographers For the Class of 1973 317 Essex St. Salem, Mass. 744-1055 142 COmp met s gasman qelahn C6. peoJbody mass. 148 ses? uiswer meRCHANTS LOAflfteN NATIONAL SANK OF ÂŁfii-en ssRviwfi m wfirmom A SHAUJiMur AssoctariorH brnk fdxc MeMeEK A.C. Lend a tune to another day. Bring your wings and choose a roof Sing a song of love and truth Weâll soon remember if you do . . . Cat Stevens Hk Hello my friend So happy to see you again. Iâm so alone all by myself just couldnât make it. Have you heard what the winds blowinâ down? Have you heard a lot of peoples corninâ right on down? Communication is coming on strong, It donât give a damn if your hair is short or long. I said get out of your grave, everybody is dancinâ in the street. Do what you know, donât be slow you gotta practice what you preach. Itâs time for you and me come to face reality. Forget about the past things ainât what they use to be . Keep on straight ahead. We got to stand side by side. We got to stand together and organize. They say power to the people That what theyâre screaminâ freedom of the soul Pass it on, pass it on to the young and old. You got to tell the children the truth they donât need a whole lot of lies. Cause one of these days theyâll be running things. So when you give them love you better give it right. Woman â child â man and wife, the best love to have is love of life. We know the birthday of our body. Yet we can never know the moment of birth of our character. It has no date. The birth of our character has many beginnings and is without end in the days and years of our life. At every moment we face an infinite number of opportunities to create a greater meaning in our life. Always, we find ourselves before another beginning. In this we discover the most creative power of Man the power and delight of the self-creation of our character. We create our character when we are alone with ourselves and in the relationships we also evolve with others. And most of all our values will be determined by the direction in which we choose to grow with others and within ourselves. On the preceding pages we have tried to express our understanding of some of the opportunities given to all of us to find the direction and meaning of our lives. But we know it is only when words move a man to act that they reveal their strength. In what we do we find the continuing birth of our character. In what we do . . We are always before another beginning. Moshe Davis Victor Ratner When you âre down and troubled and you need a helping hand And nothing, nothing is going right Close your eyes and think of me and soon I will be there To brighten up even your darkest nights You just call out my name and you know wherever you are Iâll come running to see you again Winter, Spring, Summer, or Fall, all youâve got to do is call And Iâli be there you âve got a friend If the sky above you should grow dark and full of clouds And that old North Wind should begin to blow Keep your head together and call my name out loud Soon Iâll be knocking upon your door Ain ât it good to know that you âve got a friend When people can be so cold They âll hurt you and desert you They âll take your soul if you let them But don ât you let them, you âve got a friend, Ain ât it good to know you ' ve got a friend!
