70 r A ' 1770 YfARBOOK SWF MODERN DAY DISCOVERIES AND CONFLICT! SIMULTANEOUSLY PLACE We ' ve overstepped the pitfalls of Adolescent life, We ' ve tumbled with the tides We ' ve journeyed to Mt. Everest and finally, oh yes. We ' ve conquered the moon. We stand now free: Free in mind, moved on by incalculable energy; Prepared to overcome our next obstacle . With winter gone, can spring be far behind? UNLIMITED AVENUES OF SUCCESS AND CHALLENGES WITHIN THE REACH OF PEABODIANS Foreword Today ' s Peabodians have come to the top of the mountain. They are a part of the Now Generation, They have seen man capulted to the moon (A feat heretofore unheard of.) They have witnessed the transplantation of one human heart to another. They have empathized with the Hippies and Yippies, marched in opposition to the war and survived the countless protests and demon- strations. There is no amazement when one finds a Peabodian pondering. For today ' s Peabodians find themselves in a precarious situation in this modern world. They stand at the crossroads of change and challenge -- changes in customs and social mores, educational concepts, perspectives and technology. Anyone or all of these changes could mean the fulfillment of one of their once impossible dreams. What are their challenges? Their challenges are that with all the many oppor- tunities that this growing world can afford them, that they will not become nonentities a mere voice and a mere cry in the wilderness, swallowed up by the foolishness of their own vanity and conceit, that they will give to each man his due respect, that they will use today’s accomplishments to foster tomorrow ' s innovations and that they will continually strive to reach the pinnacle of the mountain of life. 5 We introduce you to Mrs. L. Mayfield, one of the faith-, ful and dependable people who keep us well fed. Into every individual ' s life comes a time when he must leave the folds of his parents ' pro- tective arms and venture out on his own, find a new home, new ideas, and friends, and to formulate aims and goals . There is doubt, as this individual goes along his he wonders what his new home will be like Will it be warm and friendly?” Will he a part of it?” Will it be a part of him and who will be those new friends whom he is destined to meet?” Some five odd years ago, we, the class of 1970, left the quiet hours and days of grade school to come to our new home, Peabody. Timidly, we entered the hallowed walls of this great institution. However, we discov- ered our fears were unwarranted, for here we found friendly people and a warm place, where the individual mattered, and organi- zations and clubs that made an individual feel a part of this great school. For those who are unfamiliar with Peabody and for those who have known its security and its warmth, we the class of 1970, intro- duce you to Peabody and to those who helpe to make Peabody, The Starting Place of our Pilgrimage ,” The dimensions of the welcome mat are spread even wider by those loyal individuals who listei 6 ITH A FEELING OF WARMTH, lur gripes, juggle our schedules ind, and advise us on matters ond our knowledge. Nurse ' s Office -- Contrary to what one would expect this room, because of the service offered, the warmth given, and the equip- ment provided is one of the most visited rooms in Peabody. Any- thing from a Johnson and Johnson Band A id to a tooth pick and lotion can be secured from here. Cafeteria -- This is the room from which none regress. The time spent here is a time to talk over with friends, to get away from it all, and alas, to eat. I SECURITY AND AN ATMOSPHERE Mr. Piirry, cadet teacher, gives us new ideas and con- cepts. 8 Delmar Studios representative preserves Peabodians. CONDUCIVE TO LEARNING AS The initial stage of Peabody ' s growth shows only a bare frame work with a solitary figure aloft it. Peabody and its recent growth foretell of progress. The completed structure boasts of a front which is beautiful because of its sim- plicity, numerous classroom equipped with the most modern facilities, alas, even air conditioning and ample space for teaching and learning. Better and more modern facilities will inevitably lead to unlimited opportunities for students . 9 THEY HELP THEMSELVES IN THEIR LONG AND DIFFICULT Belinda Cox assists secretaries in Peabody ' s main office. Mm The Upward Bound Students spotlighted are Francine Williams and James Pegram. In the cities of Virginia Free Schools were established prior to the advent of the state system of public education which was instituted in 1870 . In this particular, Petersburg in 1868, through a grant from the city, and a contribution from the Peabody Fund, iyas the second city to establish free schools for all, irrespective of race, colbr, or social stratification. Six years later, a twelve -room brick Structure, named Peabody, because much of the funds donated for its cPnStruction was given by the late George Peabody, a wealthy philanthropist noted for his contribution of huge sums of money for edu- cational purposes in the South, was erected on the corner of Harrison and Fillmore Streets. This building housed the high school and grammar grades, with a curriculum offering only one or two courses. In 1925 Peabody, after having been moved from its original site to the present day location, Wesley and Federal Streets, was organized into a high school with a curriculum devoted entirely to secondary instructions. An observer of the history of Peabody will readily recognize the many changes it has undergone. In all there have been three principals; the late A. M, Walker, the late C. S. Scott and the present principal, E. E. Rainey. The curriculum of Peabody High School has undergone enrichment and standardization. This change has been brought about through the institution of counselors for each grade level and the installation of new equipment. The present day Peabodian can proudly boast of a faculty in which many not only have acquired a Bachelor Degree, but a few also hold the Master Degree . The occupants of the building of Peabody, likewise have contributed their share to the progress of Peabody. Recognition has been won- not only in sports, but numerous awards have been captured in the areas of scholarship, citizenship, science, math, drama, music, etc. The preceding paragraphs have given a brief, but factual report of the history of Peabody. It is a history devoid of the emotions of the people who matriculated at this great institution. This history cannot depict accurately the struggle in- volved in the creation of the present day Peabody. It cannot tell what, dreams our forefathers visualized when they first set out to build Peabody. It cannot record the happiness, warmth and yes, even the tears shared here by Peabodians at the losing of a game, the winning of a championship, the passing of a class, the receiving of a scolding, the purchasing of a ring or the plain -- old every day joy of seeing one ' s classmates. These are not facts. Thus they cannot be recorded. To insure present day and former Peabodians that references toward these mo- ments and these cherished memories will be recorded, we, the senior class of ' 70 dedicate the 1970 Lion to Peabody High. It is the profound pleasure of the class of nineteen hundred and seventy to dedicate our annual year book to Peabody High School. 13 The eighth graders produce varied emotions in the pep rally. Some are wildly enthusiastic, while others enjoy personal conversations. Our lunch breaks will always be remembers, say the ninth graders. Even times of scolding will linger in the minds of the Peabodians Senior activities climax five meaningful years. CHERISHED MOMENTS OF PEABODY To each Peabodian, Peabody has its own special mem- ories. But there are a few cherished moments shared by all Peabodians -- the loud and lively pep rallies in which we gave full vent to our emotions, the daily ex- changing of gossip in the cafeteria in which only the most timely topics were discussed, the awaited day -- Senior Talent Day, in which we displayed our talents because we had finally reached that greatly anticipated time -- Senior Time, our inflated thoughts which were brought about by the mere purchase of a class ring, those dreaded but necessary hours which were spent in the ' ■ library getting out an assignment, those feelings of horror and anxiety which were produced from repeated excur- sions by the Aimex Office, the feeling of exhiliration experienced by Latin student when they have finally crossed the Rubicon with Caesar and have gone across the last set of Alps with Hannibal and lastly, the pleasant sound of the ding-dong at three-fifteen, indicating another day had ended. 14 Filling out forms for class rings are just one of the climaxes in high school Tardy Peabodians aren ' t likely to forget this short TREK to get an excuse or a long vacation at home. Happy moments are also ones that are cherished. Senior students (Linwood Robinson, Carlton Pratt, and James Washington) show their appreciation of Latin. r j 5hi Lre sal I i The Faculty And Administration Assist Us In Our Efforts To Reach The Pinnacle Of The Mountain Their nethods of teaching are not always easy to comprehend, their moods are some- times not easy to accept, their mode of thinking may be quite different from ours, their harsh words of reprimand may not be digested readily, their goals of attainment for us may appear unnecessarily high and their motives for learning are not always discernible . Yet, we know, in the deeper most part of our beings, that our dreams are theirs . That each one, in his own way is attempting to move us one step further in the realization of our dreams. That, each one in his own way, be it by scolding, by filling our notebook to its capacity with assignments, by lecturing incessantly about the good old days or by making his class- room work a series of riddles is attempting to show us and to prepare us for the reali- ties of life -- the multifarious and perilous precipes of this demanding and challenging Atomic Age . Who are these helpful people? Why, of course, our faculty and administra- tion. f PEABODY’S ADMINISTRATION Mr. Rainey, the principal, prepares schedules for the daily activities of the school. We, further believe that these organi- zations not only are instrumental in char- acter building and in giving an individual a sense of belonging, but that they also help to improve those innate abilities an individual may possess. We have watched with pride band members who have, at an early age, gone out and formed their own band or who have pursued higher learning in music; science club members who have won recog- nition and awards, because of experiments begun in a science club meeting or debaters who have become great speakers as a result of participation on a debating team. The enumeration of examples could go on and on -- all of which give validity to our statement that clubs and organizations are a necessary part of a student ' s life. The typical Peabodian is sports conscious, sports oriented and a sportsman. It is not unusual to see the scrawniest individual try- ing out for the wrestling team or the short- est fellow attempting to make the line up for the basketball team. We do not ridicule these persons, rather we admire them . For we feel that only through participation in these activities that they can readily ascer- tain what qualities are necessary for one to compete. That it is then they realize the deep hurt of a loss and the swelling of emo- tions from a win. Features — A Showcase Of Past Experiences Here at Peabody it is not all work, neither is it all play. Peabody has its serious sides as well as its moments of joy. There are also times of pageantry and splendor, times of quiet obser- vation and mere devotion. Then, too, there are moments of accomplishments and rewards. The feature section provides a showcase for these trophies” One of the most exciting events at Peabody is the Miss Peabody Pageant. After a week of fashion shows and voting, the new Miss Peabody is crowned the night before Homecoming. Closely following the pageantry are the Christ- mas activities. These yuletide activities help make Christmas a memorable and greatly an- ticipated season at P.H.S. The colorful and highly decorated doors and baskets inject a bit of Christmas spirit into the faculty and student body. With the season of merry making gone, Peabodians are most receptive to the moments of accomplishments and rewards. There are as many possible feature stories as there are students at Peabody. However, the feature section can cover only some of them . n MEET THE CONTESTANTS I Mrs. Dickens orientates contestants for Miss Peabody on what is expected of them. (Above) Contestants share a moment of laughter before the exciting event. (Below) Contestants share moments of tension as they wait for the announcement of the winner. In the long struggle upward, we ' ve sung our songs, cheered our cheers and cried our tears. We ' ve had our moments of glory and our hours of quiet seriousness. We ' ve confronted numerous pitfalls whose pres- ence only served to make us stronger and to make us more determined to reach our goal, -- the top of the mountain. And now we stand at the summit of the mountain and we survey all that we have conquered. We look below and we see the once impending cliffs as well as the smooth route of our pilgrimage -- the past. We reflect for a while and we look beyond to find that the apex of this mountain only suffice to point out higher and more peri- lous mountains which we must now over- come . 126 MORAL LEADERSHIP SIGNIFIES OUR SPONSORS Wearing the same cheerful expressions that have comforted us and inspired us in our more difficult days, the Senior sponsors pose for the Lion. These pages repre- sent local support for a school publication. They prove that the public recognizes the importance of the high school yearbook and the many activities which are represented in it. The firms or individuals who have supported the Lion are of varied interest, yet they resemble each other in their com- mon desire for progress. Thus, we, the 1970 Lion Staff, express our gratitude to the many patrons and the sym- pathetic members of the Retail Merchant Association for placing their trust in us and lending support to our cause . 168 BLAND’S FLORIST Wou Idn ' t Y ou Real I ' Rather Have A Buick SPAIN BUICK Free Delivery — Air Conditioned Potted Plants, Cut Flowers Funeral Designs Bridal Bouquets Wilbur Bland — Owner 7 Hal ifax Street Petersburg, Virginia 109 N. You can be thankful for these schools in a country where you are free to worship and work and think and talk as you please. This is your heritage from the people who built America . The FUTURE is pretty largely in your hands — you must be vigilant and active to combat the evils of socialism, government domination of private industry, and all the ism that destroy democracy. We depend upon you to do a good job.
